In the aftermath of the most significant financial crisis for decades this conference considers how audit and financial management can add public value. The value of audit and scrutiny are in the spotlight unlike never before. Auditors in the public sector are operating in financially constrained environments which bring new pressures and risks, as well as having to take account of the environment and climate change. Similarly, at the same time the demand for efficient and effective public finances and financial reporting are growing around the globe. This conference will draw out lessons learnt and key challenges from a range of high profile international speakers and focus on new developments, such as strengthening the role of audit and whole of government accounts.

This message is to inform you that a new open call for proposals was published in the framework of the Preparatory Action on development of prevention activities to halt desertification in Europe on 20 of July 2011.

The Commission invites public or private bodies, actors and institutions, non-governmental organisations, universities and/or research institutes in the EU (who may associate with bodies and organisations of candidate countries, potential candidates and European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) countries) to submit proposals for pilot initiatives.

The pilot initiatives should supplement the ongoing projects on tackling water scarcity, droughts and desertification by complementing EU water resource balances with local data, as well as identifying management, technological and economic measures allowing the setting up of optimal water management in the pilot river basins. The results of the pilot initiatives could provide useful of information for the water Blueprint.

The deadline for applications is 30 September 2011.

The report emphasises that a healthy workforce is key to a sustainable economic recovery and presents the ways in which the Agency has continued to work to protect the safety and health of European workers, in spite of the current difficult economic conditions. Main projects in 2010 included the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on Safe Maintenance, the publications of the results of the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER) and Agency’s piloting of the Online interactive Risk Assessment tool (OiRA), which will help many thousands of small companies across the EU to carry out risk assessments in a simple and cost-effective way.

In light of the EU emerging from an economic and financial crisis, this conference will tackle the question of “The Public Services’ contribution to Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth” and will be an opportunity for policy-makers and leaders of public services providers to engage in open discussions with stakeholders on the questions of financing of public services, contribution to growth, climate change, etc.
