On June 6, a local journalist, Lala Israfeel,  was fatally shot in a drive-by incident in the Musakhail area of Balochistan, according to the police. Israfeel, who worked for Public News, was targeted by gunmen on a motorcycle outside his shop in the town of Musakhail, resulting in his death at the scene.

Officials at a local hospital where his body was shifted confirmed that Israfeel sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Following necessary legal procedures, authorities handed his body over to his grieving family and registered a murder case.

The Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ), in a joint statement, strongly condemned the killing and demanded an investigation into the incident. President Rind, General Secretary Shah Hussain Tareen, and other members of the cabinet expressed profound grief and  urged Balochistan’s Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove to ensure that the investigation considers all potential motives and leads to the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible.

The reasons behind the attack remain uncertain; police indicated that Israfeel had not reported any recent threats. No group has claimed responsibility for this violent act. Speaking to PPF, BUJ President Rind stated that the incident stemmed from a personal dispute as Israfeel’s family had nominated the accused in the First Information Report (FIR).

A journalist from a private TV channel, GNN, was reported to have gone missing in Islamabad, leading to the channel administration approaching the police to aid in his recovery. Yasir Ayaz, the reporter, has not been seen since the evening of June 05, sparking concerns over his whereabouts.

According to the formal complaint lodged at Aabpara Police Station by the channel’s administration, Ayaz disappeared after 5 pm from the vicinity of G-7 Sitara Market. The report highlights that since his disappearance, both his mobile phone and WhatsApp have been inactive, and his family has been unable to contact him.

They urged the police to take swift action to locate and retrieve Ayaz. In response, the police confirmed that an investigation has been launched following the receipt of the missing person’s application.

In recent meetings in Muzaffarabad, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government reiterated its pledge to continue supporting state newspapers and addressing the challenges faced by journalists in the region. Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore and Director General Public Relations Tariq Jameel Durani both held significant discussions this week with representatives from the local journalist community.

Prime Minister Rathore met with a delegation from the All Kashmir Newspapers Society led by Secretary Finance Ajaz Khan. During the meeting, he assured them of the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing press freedom and resolving the financial and professional issues that journalists encounter. Chief Editor Nazir of daily Jannat and Secretary Information Ali Hasnain Naqvi of the Kashmir Journalists Forum were also present.

Simultaneously, Tariq Jameel Durani, the newly appointed Director General Public Relations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, hosted a delegation from the Azad Kashmir Newspaper Society (AKNS). The meeting was attended by AKNS President Sardar Zahid Tabassum, Secretary General Zulfiqar Butt, and several key journalists.

Durani expressed gratitude for the delegation’s visit and underscored the complementarity of the Information and the  media to promote state development and public awareness. The discussions also covered enhancing the effectiveness of both traditional and digital media in the region.

The AKNS delegation, including Secretary General Zulfiqar Butt, Sardar Hameed, Javed Iqbal and other members met with Muhammad Rashid Hanif, Secretary Information and IT, Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The discussions focused on promoting journalism in AJK, the expanding role of digital media, and enhancing public access to timely information. The dialogue also covered the challenges the media industry faces and the potential for stronger cooperation between the Information Department and media organisations.

Muhammad Rashid Hanif emphasised the crucial role of both traditional and digital media in state development and promoting a positive national narrative. He outlined the government’s commitment to freedom of expression and highlighted ongoing efforts to develop modern digital communication systems, bolster professional training for media personnel, and strengthen media-government engagement.

In addition to government dialogues, the AKNS delegation visited various news agencies in Muzaffarabad, including Habib News Agency, Chaudhry News Agency, and Sardar Safaid Abbasi News Agency. They also met with representatives of the Newspaper Sellers Union and engaged with key figures such as Liaqat Bashir Farooqi, Secretary General of the International Union of Writers Azad Kashmir, and Muhammad Bashir Raja, Vice Chairman of the National Unity Party Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

These meetings highlighted the financial strains, distribution challenges, and resource limitations currently plaguing the newspaper industry in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The discussions underscored the industry’s essential role in fostering public awareness and providing information.

Sardar Zahid Tabassum reassured participants that their concerns would be conveyed not only to newspaper owners but also with relevant governmental authorities to seek permanent solutions. He called for unity and collaborative effort among all stakeholders to ensure the stability and growth of the media sector in the region.

Content creators and influencers across various digital platforms made a plea to the government to avoid imposing new taxes on their earnings in the upcoming budget. They argue that the sector not only earns valuable foreign exchange for Pakistan but also provides educational and informative content for local and global audiences.

The appeal comes in response to reports of the government’s consideration of introducing taxation measures targeting content creators and influencers who generate significant income through social media platforms and corporate partnerships. According to the latest data from the State Bank of Pakistan, the country’s freelancers, digital workers, and content creators have contributed nearly $1 billion in foreign exchange so far during the fiscal year 2025-26.

Stakeholders proposed a classification framework for creators based on their content nature and income levels, suggesting tax relief and other supportive policies for those producing responsible, educational and ethical content. n.

Mehreen Iftikhar, a senior investigative journalist and YouTube creator, highlighted the struggles faced by many journalists who are inadequately paid and often experience salary delays as a result of which they have set up their own YouTube channels and other platforms. She noted that additional taxation could discourage them from continuing to produce informative videos, independent news analysis and educational content. Iftikhar stressed that content creators are important to Pakistan’s digital economy, generating foreign exchange and creating job opportunities in various related sectors.

Furthermore, Fahad Kehar, a senior researcher and content producer, pointed out that income from digital platforms is already taxed when it flows into bank accounts. He noted the complexity of payment structures for social media platforms and argued that any new tax based on subscriber counts or views would be absurd and discouraging. Kehar also mentioned that Pakistani creators earn considerably less than their international counterparts and receive insufficient support from local authorities.

Ibrahim Amin, Chairman of the Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), urged the government to consider the negative impact additional taxes could have on creators who produce skills-based and educational content. He emphasized that PAFLA supports digital workers who respect cultural values and abide by laws and regulations, contributing positively to the national economy.

Atif Mateen, known for his roles at The News International, Daily Times, and The Nation, was remembered for his editorial expertise and his ability to nurture young talent.

Veteran journalist Hussain Naqi, former editor of The News, reminisced about launching The News in Lahore and including new young staff with half being women. He recalled that Mateen was amongst the young people hired.

Senior journalist Mayed Ali Syed, reflecting on the loss of Mateen and other colleagues, praised Mateen’s skill in producing polished news under tight deadlines, a testament to his professionalism and dedication to the field.

Mubasher Bukhari, a close friend from college, spoke about their early days in journalism and Mateen’s passion for participation in press club politics and interest in Lahori food.

Arshad Ansari, President of the Lahore Press Club, noted that Mateen remained an active member despite relocating to Islamabad, highlighting his yearly visits to Lahore just to participate in club elections, underscoring his dedication to the journalistic community.

The event also featured a documentary by Ahmer Rehman, which included video messages from notable figures such as Hamid Mir, Amir Mateen, and others.

Speakers like Shafique Awan and Sadia Maqbool shared personal anecdotes, emphasising Mateen’s kindness, and ability to maintain strong relationships across the media fraternity.

His brother, Amir Mateen, expressed the family’s gratitude towards the community for their affection and remembrance.

The gathering concluded with a consensus on Atif Mateen’s lasting legacy in Pakistani journalism, marked by his mentorship of young journalists and his unwavering adherence to the highest professional standards.

The meeting’s primary agenda was to address the healthcare challenges faced by club members and the broader journalists’ community. Both Aslam Khan and Tufail Ahmed briefed Dr Bukhari on the specific health-related issues journalists encounter.

On this occasion, Khan highlighted the vital role journalists play as society’s eyes and ears, emphasising the need for adequate healthcare support for them and their families. He commended Civil Hospital Karachi’s ongoing support and expressed gratitude to Dr Bukhari for his commitment to enhancing medical services for journalists.

In response, Dr Bukhari reassured the attendees of the hospital’s continued support and announced the appointment of two focal persons at Civil Hospital Karachi. These individuals will maintain a direct line of communication with the press club and assist with any medical issues journalists face.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, visited the residence of senior journalist Tanzil Gilani on June 7 , expressing condolences following the death of Gilani’s mother. During his visit, the minister conveyed deep sorrow and sympathy to the family, acknowledging the irreplaceable loss they are experiencing.

Tarar offered Fateha for the deceased, praying for her soul to be granted the highest place in Jannah and for the family to find strength and courage during this challenging time.

In his remarks, Tarar noted: “There is no substitute for a mother, and the void created by her loss is impossible to fill.”

The convention, organised by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) and attended by over 600 journalists and media workers including women, resulted in the issuance of the “Islamabad Declaration.” This declaration criticised the government for purportedly violating its promise not to weaponise these laws against the press.

The declaration said that an escalating campaign of judicial harassment against journalists and incidents of arbitrary travel restrictions had been observed, which they said created an environment of fear and intimidation. The declaration called for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all cases against journalists under PECA and said that a “transparent review” of the legal framework should be conducted to ensure that it isn’t used for political victimisation.

The convention also expressed concern over the issue of retrenchments in the media sector, particularly in electronic media. The declaration accused media owners of bypassing wage board and national labour law obligations through third-party hiring.

Additionally, the gathering criticised the government’s use of public advertising as a means of financial pressure to influence editorial content, highlighting Daily Dawn as a victim of such practices.

Further demands included initiating the 9th Wage Board Award to cover all media including print, electronic and digital media. They demanded media houses provide health insurance and employment benefits for media workers without “discrimination or delay.” The convention urged media owners to prioritise the rights of their lowest-paid staff and to cease mass retrenchments.

In a resolution, they called on provincial assemblies to enact journalist protection legislation similar to existing frameworks in other regions of the country. The resolution expressed “deep concern” that journalists continue to face attacks despite the enactment of the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021.

Imran Ghaznavi joined the Privatisation Commission as Chief Media Officer and Principal Spokesperson,  a key role in the organisation’s strategic communication and external relations team. According to a recent press release, his appointment aims to  focus on shaping public narrative, reinforce stakeholder confidence, and promote the country’s reform agenda through targeted communication strategies.

With a robust background spanning over two decades, Ghaznavi’s professional journey includes notable stints in both the public and private sectors. He holds an MS in Mass Communication and an MBA in Marketing, both with distinction, alongside specialized training from the United States.

Throughout his career, Ghaznavi has held high-ranking positions at several key institutions including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), and the Planning Commission. He has also been involved with leading media organizations.

Prior to his current appointment, Ghaznavi served at the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) as the Spokesperson and Senior Executive Director of Corporate and Media Affairs.

On June 1, a Senate sub-committee, chaired by Senator Sadia Abbasi, convened to address the burgeoning issues of internet service degradation and rampant diesel theft undermining telecommunications infrastructure across Pakistan. Senators Kamran Murtaza and Afnan Ullah Khan attended the session, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

The committee deliberated on the main threats to the telecom sector’s infrastructure and service continuity. It highlighted concerns regarding the extensive impact of theft and vandalism, which affected nearly 16 percent of the country’s cellular infrastructure over an eleven-month period, with over 9,200 incidents reported nationwide.

A regional breakdown showed Sindh experiencing the highest number with 3,938 cases across 31 districts. Punjab was next with 2,827 incidents in 38 districts, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 1,668 incidents across 25 districts, and Balochistan with 716 cases across 26 districts.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) outlined the challenges posed by prolonged power outages, which exacerbate service disruptions by depleting backup batteries and overloading generator systems. To counteract these issues, PTA has collaborated with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and the Power Division to secure dedicated electricity feeders and hasten the installation of smart transformers at critical telecom sites.

Further discussions covered the Universal Service Fund’s (USF) efforts in enhancing connectivity projects in Balochistan. According to USF representatives, despite identifying 80 percent of targeted areas through competitive bidding, progress is impeded by security concerns and recurrent diesel theft, which hampers infrastructure development.

The committee issued directives to relevant departments to pinpoint high-risk theft locations. It mandated district administrations and provincial authorities to address these issues legally and implement robust preventive measures to safeguard telecom installations.

Updates on network modernization were also reviewed, including recent spectrum auctions that introduced an additional 480 MHz of bandwidth and the planned issuance of commercial 5G licenses in March 2026. These upgrades aim to elevate average 4G speeds from 4 Mbps to 20 Mbps, support the establishment of 1,000 new sites annually, and introduce advanced services such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi).

The committee emphasised that internet access should be considered an essential service and urged all telecom operators to adopt immediate and effective measures to curb fuel theft and maintain uninterrupted connectivity throughout the nation.

On May 25, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang witnessed the signing and exchange of several agreements, memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and cooperation documents in Beijing as part of the premier’s visit to China to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Among the agreements, two MoUs focused on media cooperation. China’s Xinhua News Agency and the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) signed an agreement. Another MoU was signed between China Media Group and Pakistan Television (PTV), focusing on cooperation in joint documentary production.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the agreements are intended to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including in trade, investment, agriculture, education, science and technology, media and people-to-people exchanges.

A separate series of agreements was signed in Hangzhou, where Pakistani and Chinese institutions formalised 20 memorandums of understanding on education, vocational training and digital skills development.

The agreements were signed during the China-Pakistan International TVET-Industrial Cooperation and Exchange Seminar, attended by government representatives, academic institutions, industry leaders and technical education experts from both countries.

In a joint communiqué issued after the dialogue, Pakistan and the EU reaffirmed the importance of promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in line with international obligations. Both sides agreed to continue working together on a range of political, economic and security issues.

According to the EU, issues where institutional gaps exist include freedom of expression amongst others.

According to the communique, Pakistan and the EU agreed to continue working to fulfill the conditions of the new GSP+.

Mian Hassan Ahmed has been appointed as the Chairman of the Punjab Committee, with Ayaz Khan serving as the Deputy Chairman. The committee comprises several key figures in the media industry including Kazim Khan, Irshad Ahmed Arif, and Babar Nizami among others. Their responsibilities include organizing media-related activities like workshops and seminars to enhance professional standards in journalism. Additionally, they will assist in organizing CPNE meetings and events across Punjab and handle assignments from the Secretary General and the Standing Committee.

Earlier on May 19, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Committee was formed. It will be chaired by Tahir Farooq with Masood Khan as the Deputy Chairman. This committee also includes others such as Adnan Zafar and Rahatullah Khan. Their duties mirror those of the Punjab Committee, focusing on the enhancement of print media standards through various events, workshops and seminars. They will also support the Standing Committee in implementing tasks and organizing CPNE-related events within the province.

The committee is tasked with reviewing press-related matters and presenting them to the Standing Committee. They will also arrange various programs to underscore the significance of the press in society.

A significant number of journalists, relatives, and acquaintances, including notable sports personalities, attended the funeral services to pay their respects. High-profile figures such as Shah Nawaz Farooqui, Chief Editor of Jasarat, and CEO Syed Tahir Akbar, along with Irfan Ahmad and others, expressed their sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

The attendees prayed for the departed soul and requested divine forgiveness and patience for the family during this difficult time.

On June 01, Radio Pakistan Sargodha commemorated its anniversary with a special broadcast titled “Eid Milan Nasal-e-Nau Mushaira,” aimed at fostering literary activities among the youth.

Hosted by Munazza Anwar Guwindi and produced by Fareeha Kanwal, the programme featured a mix of well-known literary figures and emerging poets from the Sargodha region. Renowned poet Mumtaz Arif, praised the station’s literary programme “Adab Nama.” Arif commended the initiative for creating a distinguished place in the history of radio broadcasts by introducing the concept of “Tarahi Mushaira,” a creative poetic gathering.

Mumtaz Arif also noted that “Adab Nama” played a crucial role in both promoting new literary talents and honouring established literary icons from Sargodha through the “Yad-e-Raftgan” series, which pays homage to past poets and writers.

The event saw young poets such as Anees-ur-Rehman, Abdullah Hashmi, Kashif Ali, and Khalid Chishti recite their ghazals and poems, which the audience received well. These sessions provided a platform for these emerging poets to showcase their work and gain recognition in the literary community.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to continue promoting the cultural and social heritage of the Sargodha region through future broadcasts, ensuring ongoing support for local artists and the literary community.

Perwaiz Iqbal was a notable figure in Pakistan’s advertising industry.

The APNS leadership also shared their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, praying for the departed soul to be granted eternal peace and for the family to find the courage and strength to cope with this irreplaceable loss.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) arrested 11 social media activists across various cities in Punjab on accusations of allegedly disseminating anti-state propaganda and inciting unrest. The NCCIA Punjab spokesperson confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects had been under surveillance and were allegedly  involved in online campaigns against state institutions, particularly targeting the army.

Raids resulted in the apprehension of two suspects in Lahore, three in Faisalabad, four in Multan, and one in Gujranwala. These individuals face charges related to anti-state propaganda and creating public unrest. The NCCIA is currently gathering digital evidence and examining social media records to uncover potential networks and further online activities linked to the suspects.

The detained individuals have been charged under various sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), 2016. NCCIA Punjab Director, Muhammad Ali Waseem, emphasised the agency’s commitment to showing no leniency towards those engaged in such activities. He affirmed that the crackdown on such elements would persist, with stringent legal actions enforced as per the law.

Earlier this month, the NCCIA Punjab arrested 13 individuals for their involvement in anti-state campaigns on social media platforms. Some of those arrested were also accused of posting content that targeted Gulf countries.

On May 18, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Shafi Jan met with a delegation led by Kashif-ud-din Syed, President of the Khyber Union of Journalists, and M Riaz, President of the Peshawar Press Club, at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to address the ongoing nationwide protest movement concerning the challenges faced by media workers.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted several pressing issues, including forced dismissals of journalists from media organisations, non-payment of salaries, pending dues, and job insecurity. They presented a list of demands on behalf of media employees and engaged in detailed discussions regarding the concerns raised.

Provincial Minister Shafi Jan expressed the need to consider the legitimate demands of journalists and assured them that the provincial government is working to address these issues. He emphasised that the government has taken serious steps in this regard.

Shafi Jan described the dismissal of media workers without prior notice as unfortunate and stated that the government has linked the clearance of newspaper dues to the payment of salaries and outstanding arrears to media workers. He suggested that journalists form a committee to compile data on pending payments and outstanding liabilities to create a comprehensive record of dues owed by media organisations and so that employees’ details could be collected.

The minister also disclosed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated a phased payment of advertisement dues from 2021 to 2025, and has requested lists of employees and their salaries from media organisations. He further clarified that media institutions that do not provide employment opportunities and minimum wages to journalists in the province would not receive government advertisements.

Shafi Jan underscored the importance of resolving the issues faced by the journalist community through dialogue, mutual understanding, and consultation. He announced the introduction of an interest-free loan scheme for journalists in the next fiscal year and emphasised that protecting media workers’ rights requires collective efforts from the government, journalist organisations, and media owners.

Following the assurances given by the provincial minister, the Presidents of the Peshawar Press Club and the Khyber Union of Journalists declared the end of their symbolic protest.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Member of the National Assembly, Raja Qamar-ul-Islam, Managing Director of the National Book Foundation, Dr Kamran Jahangir, NBF Secretary Khan Farhan Rifat, Director Headquarters Murad Ali Mohmand, and other officials from the foundation.

Dr Siddiqui praised the National Book Foundation for setting up the museum to a high standard and emphasised its significance in illustrating the relevance of books from their historical origins to the modern era.

Dr Siddiqui highlighted that the museum’s rare and valuable book-related exhibits are an asset for the National Book Foundation and a national treasure for Pakistan. He noted that these exhibits would serve as a guide for future generations. The minister also commended the museum’s various sections, including the Holy Qur’an Corner, Sufi Corner, and statues of renowned poets and writers, which aim to create intellectual awareness among youth and provide learning opportunities for visitors.

Member of the National Assembly Qamar-ul-Islam also expressed his admiration for the museum, noting that recent additions have made it more engaging for literature enthusiasts and readers. During a briefing, Dr Kamran Jahangir described the museum as a symbol of wisdom, featuring rare Qur’anic manuscripts, remarkable calligraphy, and dedicated corners for prominent personalities.

The museum showcases book displays, sections on Pakistani languages, and golden statues of literary icons such as Allama Iqbal, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Hafeez Jalandhari, Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, and Saadat Hasan Manto. Creative installations like book-laden miniature trucks and trains, framed Qur’anic pages, and the “Pillar of Autographs” were designed to enrich the visitor experience, promoting learning and intellectual curiosity.

During the assembly held at the Lahore Press Club, Shahid Shaikh, a renowned senior sports journalist, was appointed Chairman of SWAP. Veteran sports reporter Sohail Ali was named President for the four-year tenure. Joining them are Shahzad Malik as Secretary and Asher Butt as Treasurer. Qayyum Zahid oversaw the election  proceedings; he also serves as an advisor to the newly elected body.

Chairman Shahid Shaikh stated that the Association would focus on protecting journalists’ professional rights, initiating capacity-building programmes, and promoting ethical sports reporting in Punjab. He stressed the importance of unity among sports journalists and the need to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

President Sohail Ali highlighted the newly formed body’s aim to strengthen relationships between sports organisations and media professionals. He emphasised creating opportunities for young and emerging sports journalists and announced plans for seminars, workshops, media engagement programmes, and recognition events to enhance professional standards in sports journalism.

Secretary Shahzad Malik expressed gratitude to the members for their confidence and assured that the Association would work transparently and collaboratively for the sports media fraternity’s betterment. He mentioned the Association’s intention to play a constructive role in promoting sports development, athlete achievements, and grassroots sporting activities throughout Punjab.

Treasurer Asher Butt emphasised that financial transparency, institutional stability, and member welfare would be top priorities during the 2026–2030 term. He outlined plans to strengthen the Association’s financial framework to effectively organise professional activities, support programmes, and training initiatives for sports reporters in Punjab.

The Executive Council for the 2026–2030 term includes Sarfraz Ahmed, Rafiq Khan, Ms Muna Rana, Rana Azar Noor, Taqweem e Millat, Akhlaq Aslam, Fawad Asghar, Rana Zahid, and Mohammad Waqas. President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment, alongside provincial administrations, to advancing policies aimed at expanding digital access and improving connectivity throughout Pakistan. In a message delivered on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, the president highlighted the vital role of telecommunications in the nation’s development and infrastructure enhancement.

President Zardari extended greetings to Pakistan’s telecommunications community, acknowledging their contributions to fortifying the country’s digital framework. He noted this year’s observance theme, “Digital Lifelines: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World,” emphasising the growing necessity of dependable and accessible connectivity in daily life. Digital networks, he asserted, now form the backbone of education, healthcare, commerce, banking, and public services, particularly for those in remote and underserved regions.

During the fiscal year 2024-25, Pakistan’s telecommunications sector attracted $838 million in investment and generated Rs1,075 billion in revenue. The president reported that the country has over 205 million telecom subscribers and more than 161 million broadband users, supported by an expanding fibre optic network, submarine cable systems, and nationwide mobile coverage.

Highlighting a significant milestone, President Zardari referred to the completion of Pakistan’s IMT/5G Spectrum Auction in March 2026. This development brought USD 509.6 million to the national treasury and increased spectrum availability for mobile operators, setting the stage for enhanced next-generation services.

The president also mentioned the Universal Service Fund’s role in extending broadband and voice services to millions in previously unserved areas. Efforts are ongoing to enhance fibre deployment, encourage investment, and finalise satellite communications regulations for remote regions.

In conclusion, President Zardari commended the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, cellular mobile operators, and other stakeholders for their pivotal roles in strengthening the digital ecosystem. He emphasised that reliable and affordable connectivity remains crucial for economic growth, public service delivery, and equitable access to opportunities across Pakistan.

On May 18, The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) apprehended a 15-member gang involved in defrauding citizens through mobile phone and WhatsApp account hacking. The arrests followed a series of coordinated raids across various locations in the Punjab province.

According to Muhammad Ali Wasim, Director of NCCIA Punjab, the gang contacted individuals via WhatsApp, impersonating senior government officials to establish rapport with potential victims. Once trust was gained, they demanded money under false pretences, such as fake taxes and processing fees. Additionally, the suspects enticed victims with fraudulent prize schemes and gift offers.

Preliminary investigations show the gang gained unauthorised access to victims’ mobile phones and WhatsApp accounts. Following the hacking, they used the victims’ contact lists and phone numbers to propagate their fraudulent activities, expanding their network of potential targets.

During the crackdown, the NCCIA seized 16 mobile phones, several fake WhatsApp accounts, suspicious voice messages, and forged JazzCash accounts believed to be used in the fraudulent operations. The arrested individuals were identified as Tehseen Saeed, Muhammad Sadaam, Muhammad Ahsan, Muhammad Sohail, Muhammad Shaan, Muhammad Rehan, Muhammad Muzammil, Zain Abbas, Umair Bashir, Ijaz Ahmed, Ali Hassan, Bahadur Ali, Muhammad Tariq, Muhammad Asif, and Mohsin Ishtiaq. These suspects were apprehended during raids conducted in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, and Bahawalpur.

The NCCIA indicated that efforts are ongoing to locate additional facilitators linked to the network, with further arrests anticipated.

In his address, Barrister Danyal emphasised the pivotal role of media in society, describing it as a “sacred national trust” and not just a routine profession. He asserted that nations thriving on truth are those that shape history. He highlighted the challenges posed by misinformation and negative narratives prevalent today, making a case for responsible and conscientious journalism as crucial in this era.

The parliamentary secretary pointed out the importance of integrating youth into the media sector, stating that such initiatives are a government priority. He noted that Media Fest provides a significant platform for students to engage in creative thinking and gain exposure to new ideas, which are essential for their development into future media professionals.

Barrister Danyal also acknowledged the successful careers of several Bahria University alumni who now hold prominent positions in major television channels and public media organisations. He encouraged current students to focus on creating impactful journalism that promotes positive social change rather than pursuing mere ratings and viral trends.

Additionally, he mentioned existing internship programs at Pakistan Television Corporation and disclosed plans to expand such opportunities to nurture more aspiring media professionals across the country. He underscored the role of media in strengthening Pakistan’s national narrative, particularly during critical times, alongside the role of the nation’s armed forces.

On May 19, the Karachi Press Club (KPC) condemned alleged police misconduct involving journalists during the court appearance of Anmol, alias Pinky. The KPC warned that any attempts to suppress press freedom would not be tolerated, calling for action against those responsible.

In a statement, KPC President Fazil Jamili, Secretary Aslam Khan, and members of its governing body expressed regret over the treatment of journalists during Anmol’s court appearance. They described the actions as deeply regrettable, unlawful and condemnable, highlighting that journalists were pushed, obstructed from coverage, and threatened with serious consequences. Allegedly, police told journalists that if the news got out, they would face repercussions, asserting authority over the premises.

Such remarks were labelled by the KPC as an abuse of authority and a direct attack on freedom of expression. The club emphasised the role of the police to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights, rather than harass journalists or obstruct their professional duties. Concerns were also raised regarding threats by Inspector Sajida Nazir to register cases against journalists, with the KPC warning that any denial of journalists’ rights to report freely would lead to protests by media bodies.

The KPC urged the Sindh and Karachi police chiefs and other senior authorities to take notice of the incident, conduct a transparent inquiry into the incident and take strict departmental action against the officials involved. The KPC reaffirmed its commitment to the dignity, safety, and freedom of journalists, pledging to continue advocating for media rights at all forums.

On May 19, police barred journalists from entering the premises of the Jail Complex during the hearing of Anmol Pinky, citing strict instructions from senior officers. Anmol, who was arrested earlier this month from her Garden apartment, faces charges related to narcotics possession and an unlicensed weapon. Police at the venue stated that no journalists were to be allowed entry, denying permission for media coverage of the case.

The workshop gathered education reporters from diverse regions including Karachi, Sukkur, Badin, Sanghar, Larkana, and Tharparkar, representing media outlets in Sindhi, Urdu, and English. The training sessions addressed the critical need for informed journalism that can hold authorities accountable and enhance the representation of underserved communities, especially when numerous girls in Sindh face educational barriers due to poverty, distance, early marriage, and inadequate facilities.

Participants delved into various topics, including analyzing education financing, identifying gender disparities in budget allocation, and interpreting budget documents. The workshop emphasised the media’s role in shaping discussions on fair access to education and tasked journalists with producing impactful stories that could influence education governance positively.

The training agenda was meticulously designed to provide the journalists with a nuanced understanding of public finance, the specifics of Sindh’s education budget cycle, and the practices involved in gender-responsive budgeting. The sessions were intensive, focusing on scrutinising budget documents, monitoring funds earmarked for girls’ education, and exploring departmental priorities through a gender perspective. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on crafting investigative stories that could effectively address issues in education financing.

Another related workshop, held on April 12 and titled ‘Education Budget Understanding, Analysis, Tracking and Reporting,’ was organized by Blue Veins in collaboration with the Malala Fund. This training, aimed at journalists covering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stressed the importance of adopting a gender-sensitive perspective when reporting on the fiscal year 2026-27 budget. Yumna Aftab, Project Manager at Blue Veins, highlighted the workshop’s role in enabling journalists to hold the government accountable concerning education budgeting.

On May 20, an Islamabad local court sentenced Umar Hayat to two years in prison in an arms case, following a previous day’s ruling where he received a death sentence for the murder of 17-year-old social media influencer Sana Yousaf. Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka, presiding over the case, also imposed a Rs100,000 fine on Hayat, with an additional month of imprisonment for non-payment.

This latest ruling under Section 13 of the Pakistan Arms Ordinance brings Hayat’s total prison time to 23 years, with cumulative fines reaching Rs2.6 million. In a two-page short order the court handed down sentences and fines to Hayat for various offenses.

On May 19, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka sentenced Hayat to death for the murder of Yousaf, who was shot at close range in her home in Islamabad’s G-13 sector on June 2, 2025. A fine of Rs 2 million was also imposed. The court also handed down a 10-year jail term and a Rs200,000 fine for robbery, another 10-year term and the same fine under defamation-related provisions, alongside a one-year term and Rs100,000 fine for a recovery-related charge.

Throughout the trial, Hayat maintained his innocence, denying his confessional statement and alleging police misconduct. He claimed that the police tortured him into signing a blank document and falsely implicated him under the influence of the victim’s social media following. Hayat also stated that he had not visited the location of the murder on the day it occurred.

Yousaf, who amassed over a million followers across her social media platforms, including 800,000 on TikTok, was known for her lip-sync videos, skincare tips, and promotional content for beauty products. Her untimely death a week after her 17th birthday shocked her extensive online community, leading to intense scrutiny and pressure on local authorities to swiftly resolve the case.

The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) announced that its member publications will observe a two-day closure on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. The holidays are scheduled for Wednesday, 27th May, and Thursday, 28th May.

As per the statement from APNS, there will be no morning newspapers published on Thursday, 28th May, and Friday, 29th May. Member publications are set to resume their normal editions on Saturday, 30th May. In addition, the announcement noted that evening newspapers would not be appearing on 27th and 28th May. However, these publications have the option to issue their editions on Friday, 29th May, should they choose to do so.

Dr. Tanvir A. Tahir, the Executive Director of APNS, confirmed that the schedule was finalised in connection with the Eid-ul-Azha holidays for member publications.

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) has called for the inclusion of strong and explicit protections for freedom of expression, media freedom, and journalists’ safety in the National Action Plan for Human Rights (NAP-HR) 2026, urging that these be recognized as core pillars of Pakistan’s human rights framework.

The Ministry of Human Rights has issued the draft NAP-HR 2026 outlining the country’s broader human rights priorities; however, PPF noted with concern that the draft does not contain a dedicated and measurable framework for the protection of journalists and media professionals, despite clear constitutional guarantees under Article 19 and Article 19-A and Pakistan’s international obligations under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

PPF also referenced protections available under the Federal Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021, and the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021.

In its submission, PPF urged the Ministry to formally introduce a thematic section titled “Freedom of Expression, Media Freedom, and Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals”, backed by clear monitoring tools and accountability mechanisms to ensure effective implementation rather than symbolic commitments.

Highlighting the escalating risks faced by women journalists, PPF emphasized the urgent need for gender-sensitive safeguards, including protection from coordinated online harassment campaigns, stronger workplace safety measures, and targeted digital security training to address emerging online threats.

The submission further stressed the importance of clear and enforceable commitments on digital rights and access to information, warning that internet shutdowns and digital restrictions continue to undermine press freedom, emergency reporting, and citizens’ right to know.

PPF highlighted its monitoring of threats to press freedom, with at least 233 incidents involving journalists and media professionals were recorded between January 2025 and April 2026. These include 67 assaults, 67 criminal complaints, 31 cases of threats and harassment, 11 arrests, 11 detentions, seven censorship incidents, and 10 connectivity disruptions.

The government restored advertisements to Suno News after assurances from its management regarding the payment of dues, while maintaining a ban on advertisements to another private TV channel over the dismissal of 170 workers.

Speaking during meetings with media representatives in Islamabad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said the government remained committed to safeguarding journalists and media workers, stressing that media organisations must ensure timely payment of salaries and avoid unjustified dismissals.

A delegation from Suno News informed the minister that outstanding dues of recently laid-off employees would be cleared and that no further salary cuts or dismissals would take place. The channel’s management also agreed to reinstate lower-level staff, including drivers and technical workers.

Tarar said that Suno New had started to implement the agreed upon points which had led to lifting of the ad suspension, adding that “every possible effort” was going to be made to provide alternative employment for those who had been laid off.

Tarar said address administrative and financial issues in coordination with media organisations.

The minister further revealed that the management of AAJ News had contacted the ministry, with a meeting scheduled for the following day.

The developments follow a protest by the Parliamentary Reporters Association, whose members staged a walkout from the National Assembly press gallery on May 11 against layoffs and non-payment of salaries in private media houses.

Addressing the National Assembly after the protest, Tarar announced the suspension of all government advertisements to another private TV channel until its management presented a satisfactory explanation and plan regarding the termination of 170 employees.

Responding to concerns raised over the suspension of advertisements to DawnNewsTV and the associated newspaper, the minister had confirmed that government advertisements had now been restored after progress towards a settlement.

Tarar also referred to another television channel accused of withholding salaries for three months, saying its management had been summoned to Islamabad for discussions aimed at resolving the matter.

The minister urged media owners to engage with employees to reach settlements and said the government was prepared to facilitate arbitration where necessary. He reiterated that protecting journalists’ job security and ensuring payment of dues remained a priority for the government in consultation with coalition partners and the opposition.

Officials of the Sindh Information Department, led by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, reviewed matters related to support for media houses and journalists.

The meeting was attended by Acting Secretary Information Moiz Pirzada, Director Advertisements Muhammad Yousuf Kaburo, Director Films Hizbullah Memon, and Deputy Director Information Sarang Latif Chandio.

Discussions focused on the existing support mechanisms provided by the Sindh government to media organisations and journalists, along with future planning and publicity matters.

Memon said the government was committed to strengthening cooperation with media houses and journalists. He said positive and responsible journalism plays an important role in societal development.

In a gathering at the Islamabad Newspaper Market, the All Pakistan Newspaper Vendors Federation (APNVF) convened to address pressing issues plaguing newspaper vendors across the nation. Key figures attended the meeting, including APNS President Senator Sarmad Ali and Joint Secretary Mohsin Bilal Abbasi, alongside numerous federation officials from various cities.

The primary focus of the discussion was the current petrol crisis and its impact on the newspaper distribution industry, which has significantly hampered operations and heightened vendor concerns. Tika Khan, the lifelong Secretary-General of the APNVF, highlighted the severe repercussions of the ongoing inflation storm on newspaper vendors. He urged APNS to contemplate serious measures to aid the vendors who are critical to sustaining the newspaper industry.

Proposals included government intervention via subsidies, allocation of housing scheme quotas for newspaper vendors, financial assistance to manage the crisis, and the introduction of electric bikes to facilitate daily operations. These measures are seen as crucial for maintaining the momentum of the newspaper distribution network and preventing a potential industry collapse due to current economic hardships.

The officials have vowed to strive for a better support package for the vendors amid these challenging times. During the meeting, Senator Awan highlighted concerns that the notice infringes upon the fundamental right to information and access as protected by the Constitution of Pakistan. The committee expressed the necessity for the Railways Ministry to uphold transparency, especially in light of strategic projects like the ML-I project and the Railways Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) and Weight in Motion (WIM) systems.

On May 12, the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared the implementation of a new system to address online harassment and digital bullying, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for harassing women in the province. The announcement was made during her address at the 21st convocation of Lahore College for Women University.

The Chief Minister outlined specific measures to improve safety for women, including installing panic buttons and creating virtual support centres.

“I want no one to look at women with a dirty eye in Punjab,” she said, stating that she would not sit idle until those who harass women were arrested and brought to justice.

The new system to combat online harassment will maintain the confidentiality of complainants, aiming to provide a secure and supportive environment for women to report issues. Chief Minister Nawaz called on parents to support their daughters by taking their harassment concerns seriously and actively addressing them.

On May 14, multiple members of the National Assembly voiced concerns over the slow internet speeds in the House and across the country, which hinder the shift to a paperless working environment aimed at boosting efficiency and reducing costs.

The Deputy Speaker, Ghulam Mustafa Shah, emphasised the move toward automating parliamentary proceedings and gradually phasing out physical document distribution. Despite these efforts and the provision of tablets to members, adherence to the new digital system has been lacklustre.

JUI-F MNA Naeema Kishwer reported difficulties downloading documents due to poor internet connectivity, prompting her to request that the NA Secretariat address the issue to ensure uninterrupted access to official materials. In response, the Deputy Speaker directed relevant authorities to resolve the internet connectivity problems within the House.

PPP lawmaker Dr Nafisa Shah noted a general reluctance among members to use the provided tablets, possibly due to unfamiliarity with the technology. This led to calls for establishing a dedicated support desk for members encountering issues with the digital systems.

Amidst these internal challenges, concerns about nationwide internet speed were also raised. Sharmila Faruqi questioned the potential benefits of the recent spectrum auction on consumer internet services. In response, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, explained that the auction was part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s telecommunications infrastructure. She acknowledged that the telecom sector faced setbacks in 2022 when operators paused the opening of letters of credit, which impacted equipment imports and network expansion. However, she noted improvements following the dollar’s stabilisation.

In written replies, Minister Khawaja also addressed the broader issues affecting internet quality, such as prolonged power outages, reliance on inadequate solar backups during winter, and various logistical challenges including harsh weather and security concerns. She highlighted the recent installation of three submarine cables and significant expansion in fibre-optic connectivity as positive developments. According to the minister, the Quality of Service (QoS) auction is expected to significantly improve internet speeds, with 4G speeds projected to rise and initial 5G speeds reaching up to 50 Mbps in provincial capitals.

In addition to telecom improvements, Minister Khawaja provided updates on the growth of Pakistan’s IT sector, noting a substantial increase in IT exports and the ongoing implementation of the National AI Policy. She also detailed government initiatives aimed at boosting the digital economy, including establishing technology parks and e-Rozgar centres, with special emphasis on increasing female participation in technology sectors.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry contributed to the discussion by outlining how the NDMA utilizes advanced technology and satellite systems to enhance disaster response capabilities, despite technological disparities at the provincial level.

On May 11, the Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced the immediate suspension of government advertisements to a private TV channel over the termination of 170 employees. This followed a walkout by members of the Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) from the press gallery during the May 11 sitting of the National Assembly, protesting layoffs and non-payment of dues by a couple of private TV channels.

Addressing the National Assembly later, Tarar said all government advertisements to the channel had been halted until its management explained the dismissals and proposed what could be done to arbitrate the issue.

During the discussion with journalists, the issue of the advertisement ban on Dawn was also raised. Responding to concerns, the minister announced that advertisements for Dawn were being resumed. He said advertisements had already been released to DawnNewsTV and added that a settlement with the newspaper would also be reached soon.

Tarar further said that the management of another TV channel, which had not paid salaries for the past three months, had been summoned to Islamabad for talks aimed at resolving the issue.

The minister urged media owners to sit down with their employees to reach a settlement, adding that overburdening junior employees was “not acceptable.” He said the federal government could arbitrate if both parties desired.

“Our biggest responsibility is dues,” Tarar said, adding that the government had paid all dues in a timely manner, with employees remaining its priority.

The PRA ended its walkout after the minister assured journalists that he would take up the matter with the relevant parties.

Earlier, speaking on the floor of the house, Tarar said the protection of media workers was a top priority and that matters related to journalists’ job security and benefits would be resolved in consultation with coalition partners and the opposition.

On May 06, the Sub-Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Information & Broadcasting convened in Islamabad, led by Senator Sarmad Ali. The meeting included Senators Syed Waqar Mehdi and Jan Muhammad, and representatives from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), provincial and federal police forces (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad), and legal experts.

During the session, it was disclosed that 13 FIRs had been filed against journalists, with 11 cancelled after preliminary investigations. The committee also learned about the registration of 689 FIRs concerning cybercrimes involving the general public.

In response to a query about filing FIRs in cybercrime cases, attendees were informed that recent amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2025, now prohibit police stations from registering cybercrime FIRs. Such cases are forwarded to the NCCIA for investigation. However, when online activities lead to physical crimes, dual FIRs may be lodged: one for the cyber aspect with the NCCIA and another for the conventional crime with the relevant provincial police.

Further discussions touched upon the rapid advancements in digital and cyber spaces. This includes a proposal under consideration to establish a provincial body similar to the NCCIA in Punjab to alleviate workload pressures; Sindh Police is also contemplating a similar setup.

The meeting revealed that approximately 140 million individuals in Pakistan are active in cyberspace, with around 20 percent of social media accounts being fake and frequently used for malicious purposes like fraud, harassment, and blackmail. The complexity of identifying individuals behind these fake accounts often necessitates international cooperation with social media platforms.

A representative from the NCCIA briefed that the agency is coordinating closely with Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police to bolster cybercrime fighting measures. The representative highlighted the agency’s success in engaging with global platform providers, noting an 83 percent response rate to Pakistan’s requests compared to 74.7 percent for India.

The committee was informed that in the past year, the NCCIA received approximately 154,000 complaints, and has developed its rules, which have been submitted to the Ministry of Interior for approval.

The session concluded with Senator Sarmad Ali emphasizing the necessity to strengthen the NCCIA for more effective performance. The Sub-Committee recommended that all relevant cases should be transferred to the NCCIA on a priority basis and called for detailed reports on transferred and pending cases to be presented in the next meeting.

Jail sources discovered the prisoner missing during a routine headcount following an internal event. The escapee, identified as Syed Tahir Naveed, also known by the alias “Polka,” was recently arrested by Joharabad police. His apprehension led to the discovery of a deceased kidnapped trader.

Despite upgraded security measures at the facility following previous escapes in 2025, including a comprehensive CCTV network, Naveed managed to flee undetected.

Internet users across Pakistan could experience reduced connectivity speeds from May 11 to May 18 due to scheduled maintenance on a submarine cable, announced by the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). The state-owned telecommunications provider indicated this might lead to internet service degradation, particularly during the evening hours.

The maintenance, as detailed by PTCL in a post on X, is to address a fault in one of the submarine cables managed by the International Cable Consortium.

PTCL is responsible for managing three undersea optical fibre cable networks that are vital for international internet connectivity to Pakistan. These networks provide the essential infrastructure for the country’s digital communications.

It is not uncommon for internet users in Pakistan to face disruptions due to issues with submarine cables. According to a study by Top10VPN.com, Pakistan has experienced significant financial losses due to internet and social media outages, leading the world in this unfortunate metric in 2023.

On May 05, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) reserved its decision on a petition by the National Assembly Secretariat against a directive from the Pakistan Information Commission. The directive demanded the disclosure of details pertaining to the parliamentary standing committees. The case was presided over by Justice Muhammad Azam Khan.

During the proceedings, Advocate Hafiz Arafat, representing the National Assembly Secretariat, argued that details about the sessions or the standing committees couldn’t be provided. He supported his claim by referencing a ruling made by the Speaker, which asserts that information from any session’s proceedings cannot be disclosed.

This stance was challenged by Advocate Qasim Bhatti, representing petitioner Sadia Mazhar, who highlighted a timing issue in the Speaker’s ruling, which was issued significantly after the filing of their case i.e. six to eight months after their case was filed. He argued that the Speaker lacks the authority under the Act to issue a ruling.

The contention also arose over the method of the information request, which was done via email. The counsel for the National Assembly Secretariat pointed out that information requested via email can’t be responded to unless the identity of the requester is disclosed. The counsel added that the petitioner did not appear before the Pakistan Information Commission.

With both sides’ arguments presented, the court reserved the verdict.

Professor Rehman leaves behind his wife, three sons, and a daughter. His son, Javaid-ur-Rehman, is known for his role as a senior parliamentary reporter at daily The Nation.

The passing of Professor Rehman has drawn condolences from various high-profile figures and institutions. Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Deputy Senate Chairman Syedal Khan Nasr, among others, have expressed their sorrow and extended condoled with his son.

In a statement, NA Speaker Sadiq, noted the invaluable role of parents, describing a father’s presence as great support and underscoring the irreparable loss felt by the family.

Furthermore, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Masood Malik, also paid his respects, describing Professor Rehman as a man of integrity known for his dedication to education and knowledge. Dr. Malik emphasised the late professor’s intellectual contributions and dignified character would always be remembered with honour and respect. He extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and highlighted the personal tragedy of losing a father.

In a recent crackdown on cybercrime, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) arrested a man from Multan for allegedly sharing content on social media that was deemed anti-army and anti-state. The suspect, identified as Azhar Ali, is accused of using digital platforms to disseminate material against state institutions.

An official said the arrest was made under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, and relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code. Punjab NCCIA Director Muhammad Ali Wasim, who affirmed that the agency would persist in its efforts to curb the misuse of social media against the state.

In a court session held at the Judicial Complex inside Central Jail Karachi, Atif Zaman, the prime suspect in the Mureed Abbas murder case, recorded his statement, denying all allegations in the murders of TV anchorperson Mureed Abbas and Khizar Hayat.

The statement came during a hearing under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The court adjourned the proceedings, seeking final arguments from the defence and prosecution on May 14. Prior to this, the case included statements from witnesses, the investigating officer, and the submission of pivotal evidence including forensic analysis of the murder weapon and CCTV footage capturing the incident.

The prosecution alleged that Atif, aided by his brother Adil Zaman, lured Abbas and Hayat to an office where the fatal shootings occurred. Following the incident, Adil, whose bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court, absconded and has been declared a proclaimed offender.

On July 9, 2019, Abbas and his friend, Hayat, had been gunned down in Karachi.

The gathering included Commission members such as Mazhar Abbas of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and representative Maqsood Yousufi from the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors and Qazi Asad Abid from the All Pakistan Newspapers Society, among others.

The meeting conducted a review of the Commission’s performance report for 2025, which the Commission decided to publish in book form. Discussions also included a detailed examination of a report concerning the murder of journalist Tufail Rind in Mirpur Mathelo in October of the previous year. The report by the President of the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club was supplemented by insights from the Commission’s focal person in District Ghotki.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sukkur’s report found that the primary motive for Rind’s murder was a land dispute and a longstanding personal enmity with his relatives. It was noted that four suspects have been arrested and are currently undergoing trial in a local court. The Commission emphasised the need for a comprehensive review, including a report from Rind’s family to fully understand the motives behind his murder.

Further, the Commission plans to invite the lawyer of late journalist Nasrullah Gadani to the next meeting to provide an update on his case.

Memon shared that directives had been issued to all media houses in the province for mandatory safety training and life insurance for journalists. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to gather data on journalists working in the region to enhance policy-making and added that media owners are responsible to ensure compliance with the provincial government’s minimum wage policy.

The CERT advisory highlighted the need to protect government digital platforms from malicious attacks and spread of fake information which could affect public trust. To counter these threats, the advisory recommended several urgent security protocols including disabling website forms and login capabilities, limiting website modifications, and enhancing database security.

According to the CERT, the primary concerns include the potential exploitation of website features such as contact forms, search bars, and file upload options. These vulnerabilities could allow hackers to access sensitive citizen information or establish persistent threats through the deployment of malicious web shells. Additionally, the advisory warned of sophisticated denial-of-service attacks that could be launched through complex queries affecting government services.

The threats are believed to originate from state-sponsored groups engaged in advanced persistent threats (APT) and ideologically motivated hacktivists. These actors may aim to gain long-term access to systems or deface and disrupt public websites as a means to challenge governmental authority and destabilize public confidence. 

The CERT has stressed the need for immediate action to implement these security measures.
