Anywhere/Everywhere you have to give your status. A call from home and you give the status whether you reached or not. A call from office and you give your work status. A call from friend after a long time and you give your "Whats happening now a days?" status. Every task/activity you give your status.
At workplace you have daily/weekly/fortnightly/monthly/quarterly/yearly statuses. Timely statuses are very important as slippages to that leads to communication failure and that further leads to bigger issues :-)

So keep giving timely statuses.

Enjoy!!!

Vision.

What is obvious in hindsight may be invisible in foresight

Get it Right!!!

Read this quote today

"Two wrongs dont make a right, but three lefts do."

:)

Survive

"Surviving is a full time activity in India".

Except a handful of Indians, everyone and everyday they have to cope with hardships and trauma. I have seen kids with dreams in their that they wish to pursue, but as they mature in their life, the question of survival keeps haunting them. An individual is stereotyped in the kind of work he had opted for at the start of the career, whether it was by choice or not.

Even the surrounding events doesn't affect his activity. For e.g. "Recent twin terrorist bomb blast at Hyderabad", the media portraits it as brave spirit, similar to the series of train bomb blasts in Bombay last year. But actually its the fear of survival that keeps an Indian moving. There is no other activity he has to do except Survival.

So keep moving for survival !!!!

Problems vs Solutions

Every one has problems, and we spend our lives finding solutions to those problems. But are we actually looking at the problem when we are dealing with it?, or we are more focused on the solutions that addresses those problems.
I have seen most of us try to work on the solution instead on a problem. And the solutions lead to another problem. It's an infinite loop and I think that makes the world go on....

"I find a solution to the problem and the problem is changed" leads to the humorous quote "Whenever I get the key to success, someone changes the lock"

So next time rather than finding the key, break the lock!!!!.

Where is your BOSS?

How far is your superior's workspace from your workplace?

If (s)he is located under the circumferential watchable area of your workplace, healthy work environment is not established. If you want to be heard, start crying (not literally) and people will attend to you. And if you are quiet (not reacting) then you are the person in the outrage chain who will be tossed left, right and center. While a smiling face can get you a look, but that doesn't convey that you want be heard.

So if you want to get heard.. CRY. :)

Price of freedom.

The cubicle animal with whom I share my den, posted a good thought on occupants of corner cabins. The post is available here. This reminded me of a quote I had read "Responsibility is the price of freedom".
As the animal has mentioned "that these guys have lots of meetings just to win a piece of some social interaction with real human beings." gave food for thought for this post.

Usually the corner cabins are occupied by people who shoulder more responsibilities amongst their peers, and it comes to them with a price of freedom.
The price for it could be as simple as they cannot enjoy a daily lunch with colleagues/peers/teams. They resort to occasional team lunch to make for the price they have paid.

As mentioned in Spiderman "With great power comes great responsibility", but "Responsibility comes with the price of freedom".

Excel.

What comes to your mind first, when you hear the word "Excel'. For those who use computer for computing or calculations must be thinking of Microsoft's version of spreadsheet "Excel".
Apart from the dictionary meaning, Excel is chewing gum to a name of a band.
Microsoft's Excel software has now become an inevitable part of financial information (Calculations/Computing/Reporting/Charts). Various application softwares are developed for different industries. These softwares provide with detailed and varied reports, but a common requirement I have seen it "Looks good. Can I get this report in Excel?". Even the data provided to these software is in form of MS Excel. "The tool needs to read the data from Daily Sales Report which is there in Excel Sheet3"

No matter how big or small is the software is, but does it link to MS Excel?

"Excel is the key to Excel"

*Not endorsing any Microsoft products. Just a blog since Excel has been so inevitable in our lives.

Closing your eyes!!!!

"Closing your eyes doesn't put the world to sleep."
I have seen people around me trying to avoid a situation or fact that causes discomfort to them. But shying away from surroundings does not put things to rest, the facts still remain the same.

I guess such people are like cats. Cats close their eyes while having milk(my guess: To relish the food). It thinks that nobody is watching while they are having the food.

But remember even when you close your eyes to sleep, the other half of the world is wide awake.

Pragnesh.

Multiple Boss = Exponential problems

In a normal scenario, a person has only one BOSS (is also applicable to WIFE). But the moment you start reporting to multiple bosses, your problems grow not in multiples but in exponential.
You are suppose to keep your boss(es) happy. But trying to keep many people happy leads to you(yourself) being unhappy. You always wonder what/why/how/when did I said this to one of the boss, and didn't divulge the same info to another one. Your boss(es) always points you by telling that the statuses of the work are not updated to him/her.

This makes sure that your work is never done/completed since you spent your time in reporting to all the bosses.
Even if you manage to complete your work, you would be never receive an appreciation/award/reward since there are many bosses who are just waiting for their share of credit.

Have you ever reported to multiple bosses? Has your problems(if any) grown multi fold or has increased by raise to the power of 'n'.?

Pragnesh.

Comfortable Forgotten.

Last post I blogged about "convenient ignorance". On the same thought, people also forget things comfortably. How often do we hear a husband saying his wife that "He forgot to pick up the laundry on his way home." or "I forgot about the meeting we scheduled this noon." I guess just because we do not intend to execute things, we excuse it by comfortably(deliberately) forgetting it.
Temporary memory losses is one thing, and shying away from things with forgetting things comfortably is another.
I guess "comfortable forgotten" is used by people just like "convenient ignorance" to escape unpleasant consequences.

This kind of forgetting does not erase memory, it lays the emotion surrounding the memory to rest. :)

Pragnesh

Convenient Ignorance

Convenience is personal comfort or advantage or saves work.
There is a saying "Ignorance is a bliss".
But can this bliss be a used for your convenience.
We always strive to gain/enhance our knowledge or try to be more informed about the things that happen around us. But can this continuous learning be mutated for our convenience.
How many people around you use the lack of knowledge for their convenience?

I have seen people getting away from/with things saying that they are unaware(ignorant) about it. Getting an undue advantage or escaping from a situation by conveniently showing themselves as they are uninformed.

Here is a another question "Does constant convenient ignorance help in a long run of life?"

Bob Dylan once said "People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent."

Pragnesh.

Cyber Coolies or Sivakasi Rocket Scientist

I have seen numerous software (programmers/engineers/developers/Professionals/Designers/executives etc. and all the synonyms that software people like to address themselves) around me with high level of enthusiasm to change the face of the industry. They wish to be someone in the industry but mostly land up being an insignificant part of a multi million software firm which operates on onsite/offshore model.
There was a term that was coined during the dotcom bust a few years back, "Cyber Coolies". People just use to code for websites, dotcoms and slog for the entire day and night, and hence the term.
But the term still holds its value. I still see people burning the midnight oil (in this case the CPU power) for a piece of software or support or maintenance that they themselves are not clear for. Neither about its application or its usability forget about what miracles can it create or not.

I have also did my small contribution to the software industry by introducing new fresh talent of amateurs (Engineering grads). A fresh pass out of college has too many expectations based on the picture/image given by the peers, newspapers, seniors etc. They aspire to work like a "Rocket Scientist" in the industry but often end up doing a job of a "Sivakasi Rocket Scientist".
For those who don't know about Sivakasi, its a town in India which is famous for its fireworks factories.

I think that "Cyber Coolies" is a vintage term(looking at pace, the industry is running) and should make its way for "Sivakasi Rocket Scientists" :).
What say?

Pragnesh.
