And while it's evolved over the years, Espoo's always taken upon itself to choose the next version of the iconic tune. For the next iteration, however, the company is leaving it up to you to be the creative genius, and is offering a reward of $10,000 for the best one. Five submissions will be chosen as runner-ups, each getting their entry offered in the Ovi store as well as a smaller cash prize for their efforts. So if you've always wanted to hear your own creation blasting out of millions of phones each and every day, now's your chance -- you have until October 2nd to get that spark of musical innovation.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Continue reading Nokia wants you to create its next iconic ringtone, if you have what it takes

Nokia wants you to create its next iconic ringtone, if you have what it takes originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 08:37:00 EDT. The latest bit of fantasy fodder comes from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where researchers have become the first to combine a quantum processor with memory mechanisms on a single chip. To do this, Matteo Mariantoni and his team of scientists connected two qubits with a quantum bus and linked each of them to a memory element, capable of storing their current values in the same way that RAM stores data on conventional computers. These qubit-memory links also contained arrays of resonators -- jagged, yet easily controlled circuits that can store values for shorter periods of time. The qubits, meanwhile, were constructed using superconducting circuits, allowing the UCSB team to nestle their qubits even closer together, in accordance with the von Neumann architecture that governs most commercial computers. Once everything was in place, the researchers used their system to run complex algorithms and operations that could be eventually used to decode data encryption. The next step, of course, is to scale up the design, though Mariantoni says that shouldn't be too much of a problem, thanks to his system's resonators -- which, according to him, "represent the future of quantum computing with integrated circuits."
Researchers wed quantum processor with quantum memory, quaziness ensues originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 22:57:00 EDT. If you’ve just bought a new Android take a look at our guide on how to setup your first Android. We will continue with one post a week until all tips and trick to be more productive with your Android handsets are covered.

So you have got your 1st android phone and wondering whats next ? If this is your first Android Smartphone or if you have just moved on to Android platform from Symbian , BB, iOS or Windows OS then article is for you. It will explain how you can forget about taking contacts backup , Gmail setup , SMS backup and few key things you should know about your Android phone.

Once you start your phone for the very first time, you need to login with your Gmail ID. This is key to everything in Android. So do it right now if not yet done and you are all set to receive PUSH email notifications for Gmail and Gtalk. Also you can now explore and download apps from Android market.

Mange your Contacts:

If you are a Symbian, BB, Windows or iPhone user, each one of them allows you to take contacts backup in CSV format. Import this CSV file into Gmail contacts . You can import CSV file from Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, Eudora. Even imoprting vCard of is supported by Gmail.

Once your Google account is linked to phone , all your Gmail Contacts will appear in phone book list. If you add any contact on phone , it will be synced back to Gmail contacts and you can see it by logging into your Gmail account > Contacts section. If you add any contact on web (Gmail>Contacts) same will appear on phone.

This is a huge plus point of Android. You dont have to worry about contact backup as you always have 2 copie of your phone book , one on phone and other on web (Gmail>Contacts) which are again 2 way synced.

Now you might notice that there are either dupliate contacts or contacts with no phone number in your phonebook. To solve duplicate issue head over to Gmail>Contacts on web and click “Merge duplicates” and to hide contacts with no phone number in your phonebook , simply open phonebook > hit menu button > Settings > Here you should find option “Display contacts with phone number” This option might vary and is device specific however every android phon has it.

Infact, i suggest you to clean your Gmail Contacts and edit all contacts with proper Name, Group, phone number and email address in Gmail. As you make changes on web (Gmail>Contacts) , same will refelected on phone. Remember its a 2 way sync to make your life easy.

Advantage of 2 way sync? If you lost your phone or if you happen to format phone for any reason, you dont have to worry about contacts backup. All your contacts will be back in phonebook after you login to Google account next time. Same is the case if you buy a new Android phone.

Manage SMS and its backup:

We all love SMS,except spam SMS J People tend to have huge collection over time. But what about its backup ? Its simple, you can backup your SMS inbox to Gmail. Install SMS Backup+ from Android market. Open app and follow onscreen instructions. It will create a label named “SMS” in Gmail and you can view all SMS from your inbox in Gmail. Not only it allows to take SMS backup but also to restore it back to your phone incase you format phone or buy a new Android phone.

Memory Management :

Its natural for every new Android user to install Task killer to kill back ground task which they think is eating battery , CPU resources or hogging memory. However you are likely doing more harm than good. Remember its not windows, its Linux. Memory management is very different on phones than on PC. On PC closing apps and ending process is natural and does not consumes more power. But when it comes to phone , equation changes.

Every Android app runs in its own process. Android operating system(version 2.3.3 and above) is very very efficient in closing app and freeing memory. On phone, starting app from state zero to usable mode consumes a lot of CPU power and hence battery life. When you hit back button and leave the app, Android OS restores state of app in memory in case you need/open same app later. Hence subsequent launch of same app is faster. In case the app is not used for longtime or if you happen to open a memory intensive app like games, OS will free up the memory from such unused apps.

Installing task killer has many disadvantages, 1. It has to run 24×7 in background to monitor other apps and 2., killing app consumes more CPU cycles as it has to force close it and hence more battery power is wasted. I suggest you to let Android OS handle this.

This is a very hot and debatable topic and instead of reading what others have to say , experiment yourself. Monitor your phone usage and battery life with and without Task killer.

Android “Share” menu :

Apart from awesome Gtalk and Gmail app, if anything I love the most in Android is its “Share menu”. Eg. Open any image, hit share menu and you will see all the apps capable of handling the image. Like gmail , twitter , facebook etc. You can instantly share almost anything to anywhere on Android. This “share” menu is always present in almost all apps on Android.

Here is one more eg. You can see twitter app displaying a tweet of my friend. I can hit share menu and can send this twitter text as mail to a friend, or have it in SMS inbox and send it to anyone i want or simply post it to my Facebook as status update :)

I hope you got the idea of what this “Share” option in Android is and how you can use it to have better user experience. Its indeed one of my most favorite, unique and powerful thing Android has. If you are a developer , you can hook your app in this share option. This is exactly why Andriod OS does not have to do anything to integrate social networking system in OS. Today Apple has deeply integrated twitter in iOS 5 and WP7 have deep integration of Facebook in WP7 OS. Imagine the case of twitter and FB going down in few years because someone has launchd a new fancy social network, iOS and WP7 users are still left in limbo and they cant have that deep integration of this new social network on phone unless Apple or MS provide OS update. However Android users just have to install the app of that new social network which will have its hook in “Share” option. Now you can instantly share anything to this social network.

In addition to that , Facebook and twitter for Android app syncs your contacts to phone without any Android OS update. On Samsung phones, you can view updates in phone book itself. On HTC phones, they have widgets for same.

Nokia has released a new Messaging app for all Symbian based devices, dubbed as IM for Nokia. As the name suggests, the app allows users to chat with their friends on popular IM (Instant Messaging) networks.
During the same time that the Apple's new IOs5 too coming with its own messaging app to counter Blackberry PIN based messenger. At the moment, the application supports popular IM networks like Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo Chat, MySpace IM, and the extinct Ovi Chat. Sadly, the app does not support the highly popular Facebook Chat. By default, users will need to enter their Ovi account username and password before they can use the app.

The application also comes with a handy widget for Nokia’s touch screen based Symbian handset. There is also a widget for S40 based handsets, but its functionality is quite limited.
The application is available for download from the Ovi Store for the Nokia X6, Nokia 5230, Nokia N8, Nokia E7, and other Symbian^3 based handsets, along with S40 based handsets. Nokia will also pre-install IM for Nokia in their future handsets.

Stevenson, M.D., now 97 and living in a retirement community in Laconia, N.H., served for 25 years as professor and chairman of Ob/Gyn at Detroit's Wayne State University School of Medicine. In 1972 he moved to Center Sandwich, N.H., to practice as a country doctor. He wrote this memoir for family members more than a decade ago. When it appeared for the first time in this magazine, 11 years ago, it became one of the most requested Annals Of Hopkins articles ever.

Since our country was in a deep depression, however, it was generally understood that quite a few students in the school were not able to keep their tuition payments up to date. Many were going around in threadbare clothes and had holes in the soles of their shoes. Some were getting only two meals a day. But we were all in this boat together, and it bred a real camaraderie among us. I don’t recall hearing any words of complaint.

For myself, I wasn’t any more uncomfortable with my debt than were the other students. Still, I felt sorry for Mr. Burgan, who, despite the responsibility of his job, was the soul of generosity and kindliness. He never put any pressure on the debtor students to hurry and “pay up.” But at the same time, by subtle innuendo, he let us know that our debt was real and that we should pay it as soon as we could. We students did not talk among ourselves about our financial obligations but it was understood that repayment was our No. 1 priority.

I had been born and raised in Baltimore and knew that I must scratch around and see if I could raise some money from my relatives and old family acquaintances. My aunts Margaret and Mary Stevenson at once suggested their lifelong friend, Miss Alice Owens, who had been private secretary to Dr. Howard A. Kelly for some years and worked every day with him in his private radium therapy hospital on Eutaw Place. My aunts knew from Miss Owens how generous Dr. Kelly was in helping young people who needed money for their education. After speaking with my aunts, Alice wrote me a note offering to talk to Dr. Kelly on my behalf. She said she would try to arrange an appointment for me to meet him and advised me to “come right out” with my story as he did not like “to beat around the bush” in such matters.

I could get out of class by 3 p.m. and would go over by streetcar, which would take about 45 minutes. (All of this seems like yesterday.) In a few days, a note arrived from Alice saying that my appointment was at 4:30 p.m. the next Friday. I was really excited about the prospects of this meeting and was well aware of the importance it might play in my life career. As a young man growing up in Baltimore, I had read in the Sunpapers about how Dr. Kelly had traveled to Europe to bring back radium for research at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. I had also read in a medical history text of his bringing modern gynecology and obstetrics to Baltimore when, as a young man, he came from Philadelphia in 1889 to become one of the first three clinical professors in the new medical school.

On the appointed Friday, I rode across the city on the streetcars, walked south for some blocks and finally came to the large, three-story building that was his home, office and hospital. I went up several stone steps and rang the bell next to the brass plate, “Howard A. Kelly, M.D.” The maid who opened the door directed me up the stairs to the second floor, ushered me into Dr. Kelly’s office and told me that he would be in when he had finished examining a patient.

The room was cozy, with a dark rug on the floor and light-colored walls. There was a large, stained oak, roll-top desk with a swivel oak chair in front of it. Several framed diplomas and awards were on the wall, and I noted that one of them was from the medical faculty of a German university. I was greatly excited that I was momentarily to meet so great a specialist in gynecology and cancer.

Then another door opened, and he came in. He had on a long white physician’s coat, stiffly starched and spotless, and was about medium height and build, with a round face and fair skin, sparkling eyes and a genial smile that made him appear younger than his years. Radiating good will and a “can-do” youthful enthusiasm, he stepped up to me briskly and put out his hand for me to shake, which I did warmly. Exchanging his white coat for his regular suit jacket, he motioned me to sit down. He then sat down in his desk chair, swiveled around and faced me directly.

“According to what Miss Owens told me, we have some personal business to attend to,” he said right away. “I understand that you are trying to work your way through Hopkins medical school the way you worked your way through Princeton, with the help of a scholarship. I regret to say that we never had any regular scholarships at the medical school. I’m sure that you, like so many, are having a difficult time of it, but don’t ever give up!”

Without further ado, he reached for his checkbook and turned to me again. “Exactly how much do you need to pay up your medical school bill for this year?”

“Three hundred and sixty-five dollars,” I answered quickly.
He proceeded to write out a check for that amount. “Now you go and hand this check to Mr. Burgan tomorrow,” he said. “He will have a rubber stamp with which he will endorse it over to the medical school. I’m counting on you to study hard to get good grades and to become a truly good physician. You might even want to become a woman’s specialist! We have a fine woman’s clinic here at the Hopkins, and I can’t think of a program anywhere in which you could get a better training.” I took the check from him, folded it and put it in my shirt pocket.

It all happened so quickly I was practically dumbfounded and deeply moved. Miss Owens had been incredibly effective in laying out the scenario for me. I had not had to ask him for the money, nor even speak one word about it! Finally I found my tongue and spoke up, “Thank you very much, Dr. Kelly.”

He replied at once: “Don’t thank me. Thank the Lord above.” He smiled at me in a happy way.

I said, “Sir, I want to discuss with you how and when I can repay this loan. I doubt I will be earning any money for the next six to seven years.”

He interrupted me. “You are not to repay the money to me. When you start earning and get ahead enough, you must search for another needy and worthy medical student—another Charlie Stevenson—and pass it on to him. In years to come, I am sure that you will do many gentle and kindly things in helping your patients. These will be more than adequate recompense for me.”

On hearing this expression of faith from such a great man, I resolved to carry out his instructions as best I could. He gave me a fatherly pat on the shoulder and said, “Now you get back to the medical school. You no longer have to carry the worry of that unpaid bill. Let me hear from you every June at the end of examinations as to how you made out. I will follow your career with great interest, and I want you to consider yourself my protege.” With that, he ushered me out of his office.
I went on through graduation from the medical school in 1934, was granted a gynecology internship and then was selected as the one to go on through the full five-year residency training [at Hopkins]. I was fully aware that I was being given this great opportunity in Dr. Kelly’s department, the one he founded in 1889.

I had seen him perform surgery briefly once before and knew that he made quick decisions and was a rapid operator, and so it was not without some temerity that I met him as he got off the elevator. I presented a brief history of the case while he was dressing and later as we were scrubbing.

The operation went very well. Dr. Kelly was amazingly spry and dexterous for someone 77 years of age, and his hand motions and use of the instruments were perfectly controlled and accurate. He did a rapid supracervical hysteromyomectomy and, stepping away from the table, directed me to draw the bladder fold of peritoneum posteriorly over the cervix stump, suture it there, then close the abdomen. He at once began to quiz the residents in the stand and gave some explanations of how to avoid pitfalls in difficult cases. He enjoyed the occasion immensely, as did we.

Later, when we were alone in the dressing room, he asked me, “Stevenson, what are you going to do with your fine training when you finish here at Hopkins?” I told him that I wanted to become a teacher and researcher. “Don’t stay in Baltimore,” he said, “Here you would just be another good Hopkins-trained gynecologist.”

At the end of August 1939, I started a residency in straight obstetrics at the Boston Lying-in Hospital of Harvard. But in June 1940, I still had so many debts from my medical school and my gynecology residency that I had to temporarily cease training and go into private practice in Pittsfield, Mass. My wife, Betsy, and our little son, Charlie Jr., soon joined me there, and we had a happy 32 months together before I left to go on active duty in the Navy in April 1943.

During the last week before I boarded my ship, I was busy paying off my debts and saying goodbye to my family. I called Hopkins and explained the instructions Dr. Kelly had given me 11 years before and asked them to line up a “needy and worthy” medical student for me to come to meet. On the agreed day, I traveled to Baltimore to pass on Dr. Kelly’s $365 with the same instructions he had given me.

Thus it was that on the last Thursday of the month, I went to the bursar’s office and there met Victor A. McKusick. I liked him at once, wrote him a check (at his request made payable directly to the medical school) and explained to him, word for word, as best I could recall, what Dr. Kelly had instructed me to say.

Sadly, I was in a great rush to get to my ship in Norfolk and just could not work in a call to Dr. Kelly. Ten months later, when I got home from the invasions of Sicily and Salerno Bay in Italy, I learned of his death.
I have since seen Victor McKusick, now an internationally recognized professor of medical genetics at Hopkins. He assured me that he, in his turn, had become able to pass along Dr. Kelly’s gift to a promising and worthy medical student and that he was sure the odyssey of this historic gift was continuing.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?"
You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."
He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."
As the poor boy (Howard Kelly) left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.
He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won.
Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...
"Paid in full with one glass of milk"
(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.
Nokia E7 comes with an 8MP camera with dual-LED flash,
it's got a tilting 4" AMOLED touchscreen with nHD resolution and a four row slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It's got high-end connectivity - 10.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS and Cell-ID positioning along with USB On The Go.720p video capture, and 16GB of built-in storage. There's HDMI port with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound support.

The Nokia E7 weighs a hefty 176 grams - but that's because it's made of anodized aluminum. E7 display uses the new ClearBlack technology, it promises darker blacks, better sunlight legibility and less power usage. The E7 is expected to cost around 495 euro. And since E7 has GPU, and QWERTY, free navigation & business facility like email & document editiors its worth every penny..

After long weeks of boring torturous classes, and college cricket match in which our dept lost having reached finals. Weekend Holiday seemed as Respite. Finally I got a day to wake up late, After a call from my friend around afternoon I remember having promised him for movie. Still in denial for having gone to watch 'Just Matu Mathalli' last time i was having second thoughts about going to this movie.

Anyways Ye Maaya Chesave is a tender love story woven around 'Karthik' who finishes his B.E in Mechanical and is aspiring to become a Film Director, falls for Jessie a beautiful girl appearing credibly cute in Saree,. The Reason I was telling myself why did i ever agree to watch was because it was a holiday, i had no other work, A/c would be a respite. Also it was Goutham Menon's direction - reminded me of Vettayadu Villayadu.

Coming to the Movie, initial starting was irritating., a light feel, but sluggish pace that tests patience, Unlike any typical Telugu films, this is different. Not that every movie has love story, but hero proposes heroine even before he knows he loves her., shocked girl takes a week off and travels to her native Allapuzzah, Kerala,. And he follows suit to say sorry but she introduces him to her other relatives and grandparents. He agrees to remain a friend, lust seeps into their 'feel-good relationship' in the train way back home. Then on its how how mixed feelings of both commitment to relationship and denial to continue it keeps playing its part is all through the film. She is torn between the love for her father and Karthik, it is an option one time and a bad choice another time.

And he finds her behaving Crazy and still loves her even more knowing they are from 2 different religious background and that her father wont let her marry him. Jessie's family gets to know of the affair soon, and the two families slug it out. The girl's father decides to marry her off in Kerala, and our hero goes on a trip there to see her off, one final time.

In the Second half its surprising that she walks out of wedding, and her brother having found Karthik at the location presumes he has a role in her sudden decision, so he thrashes him and his friend and puts him in police station. Then he is released and he meets her only to get proposed back by her! Side by side he goes on to become an assistant director and has to leave for Goa for 45 days. Here Jessie becomes restless and keeps calling him. SO he leaves the shooting and goes back only to be dumped by her!

3years pass by and our hero is now directing his own failed love story., Simbu is hero and Thrisha Heroine. When shooting at foreign locale he suddenly sees Jessie, they meet. And he expresses his ever lasting love for her even knowing she is married. And says ' First Love cant be Missed!' only to be surprised that she too did not marry and came to USA to be not compulsed by her parents to marry. Then and there itself both decide they cant run away from each other and decide to marry, his movie as a director is released at same time. And they come out from the theater with cool ending.

The film seems unclear and no reasons found for any action taken by both of them, puts us into tizzy, but Kerala and American scenery shots are really great and somehow the movie becomes bearable. His acting is not that good, but ok for starters as he shows no proper passion towards his deep love.

Technically, the film boasts of good music and background score (AR Rahman) and the cinematography is fantastic.

Though the slow pace and the colourless dialogue work against the film, Ye Maaya.. sinks in if you can patiently listen to its story. And then its the End. Finally I come out to decide. I must write an blog about this. And make it a point to write blogs whenever i watch a movie. For my day to day incidents I however shall depend on twitter. So see you then at http://www.twitter.com/prajnyan

Follow me on twitter: @prajnyan for updates, I tweet more than I ever blog..

Solar Eclipse Photos in Nairobi

Solar Eclipse Photos in Nairobi

Posted using ShareThis
Follow me on twitter: @prajnyan for updates, I tweet more than I ever blog..

Mr Harry Potter On facebook!!

Amazing ;)

On other note not so amazing news is after having studied system software for an entire day, as usual my exam paper sucked, they never gave any expected questions (point to remember unless they don't give the question each time how can it be called expected?). In VTU we cant expect anything, because they always are interested in screwing engineers life. This was a message that i received after the exam.

"What is 2+2=??

Ans: i. 4 ii.
[Source: Techtree.com] Mobile Phones Minus IMEI To Go Offline Today

If you are one amongst the 25 million subscribers using an IMEI-less handset (Chinese or not), this might just be the last day you use your mobile phone as one. Chances are that your phone might just be relegated to an overpriced media player as it can be taken "offline" by your trusted mobile operator.

The reason is a directive from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to disconnect all phones which do not have valid IMEIs from their networks. This move comes after a yearlong saga of many flip-flops and ideas some of which included things like "legalizing" an illegal handset by assigning it an IMEI number. However, after a year, nothing seems to have borne fruit and an exasperated DoT has come up with this directive.

What remains to be seen now is if the mobile companies really go ahead and "deliver" this time round. This is not the first time that such a directive has been issued by the DoT. Earlier this year, there was a huge outcry when a similar directive was issued. However, nothing much happened that time. Let us wait and watch if anything happens this time as well. Meanwhile, keep a tab on the network signal indicator on your Chinese phone!
Follow me on twitter: @prajnyan for updates, I tweet more than I ever blog..

Aaarya -2 was worth watchin

After pretty long time i got to go for a Telugu movie. Like Jab we met, there is an chemistry b/w the pairs..
Follow me on twitter: @prajnyan for updates, I tweet more than I ever blog..

Re Entry into Blog Sphere

Life's weird just like in the TV serial HEROES, u cant expect what u want even with powers. Because along with power you also get responsibilities that you must learn to handle.

Somewhere down the track i slipped and did not agree to the fact that i needed help. But today i confess "Man is indeed a social being" and he does need one another for support. I dont know why i would stop blogging in first place, may be i did not get sufficient time to express my views or i felt Orkut and Facebook a better alternative to writing stories on blog or copying fwd emails which no one would read anyways. I can however frame the word STUPID person, i can try to correct my mistakes but rather it would be better to learn from it and try not to do the same in future. Intelligent ones dont agree to it.

Any Case. I am back, not with a bang, but yeah i do stay in Bangalore !!

<<have>>

Follow to always choose the right lies solely in my hands, its when u get to decide where you really stand, life's pages always must keep re writing itself.."

I would want to brief what happened in my past few months of not having blogged..
One of my close cousin got wed, another of my relative had a baby, our college principal got changed, orkutting mania left me, had been on a big trip, and on social front everyone knows that our nations president changed, some more people died due to voilence, , and blah..
This just rings a bell in my mind.
"Remember you can shape ur present, because tomorrow isnt in ur hand, its only today that matters, and "today" really matters..." So, here it is, today's blog ressuruction post!<br
