Enabling Manual Exposure in Video on Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Canon has announced a firmware update for their EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR enabling manual exposure when shooting videos. With the updated version, users will be able to manually adjust the shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings in the video mode. The new firmware will be available for download on 2 June 2009 from Canon's website.

Canon’s Research and Development team has listened closely to customer feedback to develop additions to the camera’s movie recording functionality.
Allowing EOS 5D Mark II owners to achieve even more stunning video results with the camera, the firmware update will include the following manual controls when shooting video:

Full aperture selection
ISO speed: Auto, 100 – 6400 and H1
Shutter speed: 1/30th – 1/4000th second

[DIY] Hacking Beauty Dish for speedlight

Everyone loves smooth, creamy portraits that a Beauty Dish creates, but hates paying the ridiculous prices for the units, usually starting at around $200. So why not hack yourself one? David Tejada did!

The commercial photographer decided to make one himself for his Speedlight (although this can be used with pretty much any large flash unit) after looking at some available online, which just weren’t worth the cost, in his opinion. So after finding a little bit of inspiration from Flickr member Tyler Burk, adding his own special ingredient in the form of a convex mirror to help bounce light, and just a little bit of effort, David has himself a REALLY nice looking beauty dish for a tiny fraction of what even the cheapest units go for online.

Made out of a garden pot, an empty CD spindle, a drain gutter downspout, some velcro, and spraypaint, this beauty dish creates some silky lighting for your portraiture, with a reported loss of light of only about a stop and a half, not too shabby for a DIY hack at all. The top image here is the bare flash, the bottom is with the beauty dish.

Photograph without camera

You probably think I’m kidding. I’m not - I do this all the time. Whether I’m on a photo outing or just going about my regular life, I’m always looking at the landscape with compositions in mind. But when I am on a photo outing I still photograph without my camera. That is, I find my photographs first, without my camera in hand.
This is one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned. Most people will jump out of the car, grab their gear, and set up right away, extending the legs of their tripod and mounting their camera. It’s my guess that the very best spot for the shot is usually not right next to the car. I’d like to suggest that you first find your photograph without your camera in hand. Wander around to find what you’re looking for. You’ll be unencumbered by all your gear and you’ll be much more flexible and efficient in finding the optimum spot from which to photograph. Plus, because now you’re light and flexible, you’re likely to find many more interesting possibilities.

Once you think you’ve found a good place to shoot from be sure to mark it somehow. Leave a hat, a stick, or make a scuff mark in the dirt. Next, go get all your gear. Once you get back to your spot, set your tripod somewhere out of the way. Grab your camera and a lens and this time go find your shot in the viewfinder. By handholding the camera, you’ll easily be able to move around.

How to hold your camera more stable

We all know the value of using tripods: Regardless of the situation, they will keep your camera more still than any other standard photography tool. But sometimes you may not have your tripod handy. After all, if you're just out for an afternoon errand, you may carry a camera with you, but not a 10-pound tripod. Or maybe your tripod broke. Or perhaps you just can't access your tripod before a fleeting photographic moment is over. Whatever the situation, there are alternative methods for holding your camera more stable than you could with just your hands.

Use a monopod

They're more portable and quicker to set up than a tripod, but they'll still keep your camera relatively still. In fact, it will add about two stops to the 1/lens-focal-length rule for hand-holding a camera. For example, it you're using a 60mm lens, you may feel comfortable hand-holding your camera for a shutter speed as low as 1/60; in that case, figure a monopod will let you use as slow as a 1/15 shutter speed and give the same results.

You can make a monopod even more stable by leaning against an immobile object, such as a wall or a tree. This effectively gives you a pseudo-tripod: One leg is the monopod, the second leg is the wall, and the third leg is the friction between the wall and the camera body that will keep the camera from moving forward or backward. You can bolster that "third leg" friction by gently pushing the camera into the wall.

Rope support

Keep an 8- to 12-foot piece of rope with you. If you need a makeshift camera support, tie the ends of the rope together to form a loop. Hang the rope over your lens near where it mounts to the camera body, and let the rest of the rope fall. Next, place each foot along the rope on the ground, so that you can pull up with the camera to make the rope tight.The upward tension you apply to the rope should be enough so you can shoot with some stability.

Put your camera down

Find a firm surface that's at the same level you want to shoot at. You can use a table, a rock, the ground, etc. If the surface is dirty, put something on it to protect your camera, such as a jacket or a magazine. Now rest your camera on the surface and frame your shot. You'll almost always find that you need to adjust the height of the lens or the camera body; for that you can use almost anything, such as a wallet, or a small book.

Apply pressure

If you must hand-hold the camera, find something immobile that you can lean against. Again, a wall or a tree will do. Hold the camera against the wall to create some friction that will help the camera stay still.
Use your body

If none of the other options are available, position your body to give yourself a lower center of gravity, thereby making your stature more stable. If you need to stand, spread your legs to shoulder-width and shoot sideways; your stance will give you a wider base, and your shoulder joints are less vertically mobile in that position.

Final tricks

Whatever you do to give your camera more support, take other measures, too. Use a cable release to avoid the minor shake caused by pushing the shutter release. If you don't have a cable release, use the camera's self-timer set at a couple seconds; by the time the shutter opens, any shake caused by pushing the release will have stopped. Also, fire off a few frames at a time using continuous-frame mode; one of the frames is likely to show less motion than the others.

[REVIEW] Canon G9 - Back up For Professionals?

Canon G9 that seemed to have nice specs (12.1 megapixels, a 35-210mm image stabilized lens, and RAW capabilities) and an even nicer price (under $500).
The images on the big LCD looked great and the list of pro features on the camera was impressive.

I wondered if this camera had more potential than just being a “snapshot” camera. For example, not only does the camera have manual mode, exposure compensation, a great macro mode, RAW capability, and a live histogram, but it also has 3-frame auto bracketing in 1/3-stop increments up to 2 stops, over and under. I could easily do HDR (high dynamic range) images with the G9 if I wanted. The camera also has an optional filter adapter and I could use my polarizer and grads on the camera. I am lost without filters and the ability to use my arsenal of camera filters on a point-and-shoot is really important to me. This camera had the potential to produce photos I could use professionally with its pro-like controls and a big pixel count.
the images from the G9 made sharp, clean files that produced amazing 12x16 enlargements that easily rivaled that from 35mm film. Wow, a snapshot camera that could make big photos! The lower ISO settings made the best quality images (ISO 80-200) but I was still impressed by the higher ISO settings given the huge pixel count on the small sensor.

Is there anything missing from the camera? Sure, it would be nice if the lens was wider than 35mm. You can buy a wide angle adapter lens that gives you about 28mm, but that just means hauling more gear around which counters the reason for owning the camera. Also it would be great if Canon returned to a swiveling LCD for low-level, macro, and surreptitious photography. I also wish there was a cable release socket on the camera. I can work around all these issues, but overall, this little camera has ignited a renewed passion for photographing the world around me.

[TIPS] STUDIO LIGHTING #02 : Understanding Light - and shooting right!

In last couple of years,I’ve made several great friends who work in Photo Labs. When asked about the biggest mistake they see every day; the response is always the same. They usually answer after a long sigh, "These people just don't understand light."

Remember: all cameras average the existing light. What that means is, just because you can see it . . . doesn't mean the camera can. The human eye is far more sophisticated than the most expensive camera money can buy. If . . . for example, you stand someone in front of a bright window, your eye can still tell who that person is . . . but the camera can not, at least, not without help. Your eye will zoom into a person's face and ignore that bright light around them, but the camera will not.

The camera's whole purpose in life is to make an image that is 18% gray. Long ago, someone decided that 18% gray was as close to the human eye, as a camera can get. But if for example, 80% of the picture frame is filled with light that is brighter than 18% gray, what does the camera do? It tries to average out the given light. It will take your best friend and makes him or her, a silhouette. Don't get mad at the camera, it's only doing what it's told to do.

Remember, if you want a subject to actually be white (a wedding dress for example) you will have to give the shot more light than the camera suggest. If you want it to actually be black, (a black horse for example) you have to give the shot less light than what the camera is indicating.

Often, the bride will be covered in a new hairstyle and fashion beautiful dress. However, it is much more than a beautiful model to take pictures. It embodies the meaning of marriage and family happiness together. It is natural for her to be both thoughtful and pensive radiantly happy his wedding day. Its future is wrapped up in this one occasion. She will cry, laugh aloud, and show emotions unexpectedly. This is part of its history of marriage. You must seize the best possible

Before marriage, write a proposed list of plans. Wherever possible, a study of the wedding album to learn what shots are important. Include the wife of your suggestions on earlier discussions with her. Take all the shots on the list. Also, be ready to add new ones, or to change the order in which the list is actually taken. Such a list might include the following elements.

Bride Alone

At the church or facility / park / input structure and / or altar / gateway stages: full train (back, side and front), up close, does differ from its operations bouquet of flowers

Interior: near a window (daylight); closely, looking in the bouquet or research through the window

The exterior: nearly a photograph of property, an ornamental tree or flower garden, near a guardrail or stone / wood structure

Bride and Groom

Same as above

Add mood / Romance plans of their hands and rings and two of them in search of each other eyes, almost kissing, or in a relaxed atmosphere at or near a beautiful scene

Wife with other

With the maid of honor, flower girl, ring bearer, bridesmaids, all bridesmaids and flower girl (two plans pleasure, for example, showing her garter with everyone sitting and laughing), with his mother , Father, mother and father (add sisters, brothers, and close relatives), with sisters and / or a brother, grandparents and other family members

With the minister, friends and special guests / pers

12. Repeat sessions in your mind.

[TIPS] DPI how and what!

When I started on the Internet, I was a photographer. I started to surf the Web. After several months of research tutoriel photography and photo link, I realized that most of these sites used thumb tack tests format
(usually 1 "x 1 ¼ inch or less). This is back in the days that have a 28.8 modem is considered at high speed.

The reason for these inch nails were so small that it is has taken so long for pictures to come on the page. When you click on an individual thumbnail, a larger version of the image has been
(usually 4x6 or more), but it would take a very long time to do so.

Search all major images I could find, I saved the ones I liked, and brought them into Photoshop where I could be compressed. I made my own site with images that have measured a huge 2 inches x 2 ½ inches, which is better than the small thumb nails, I have seen anywhere else. I quickly found that over 90% of their images were recorded at 72dpi, so that what I did. For several years I have saved all my pictures to 2 inches x 2 ½ inches and 72dpi.

As my interest in photography continued to grow, I realized that the photograph of a portrait website could be cool, but it gave me no money. I needed to set up a site of my own photos. At the moment, I was using a 56k modem and decided my photos must be greater. When I scanned in my pictures I usually do 100% 72dpi, so that all my pictures online now where size 4x6.

After a few years, my laboratory has begun to offer images on CD. They were also 72dpi if I did not have to scan and more. Life was good, but they have used file sizes as 44 inches x 56 inches at that time, I can not really understand. I did not know anybody who ever printed something that big, again, I took these images compressed and reduced to 4x6 inches.

Finally, I started doing the same thing, but saving them as 5x7 inches. My new site www.prassprasetio.com actually looks impressive and very quickly loaded. Yes, I also finally strengthened at high speed real (1.5mbs a sec.) Life was good again, until I returned and began to pursue one of my great loves (writing). I am rather than using this site as a gigantic portfolio, why did I not offer something to sell as well. You know the old adage "write what you know best? For me, it makes perfect sense that I should start writing about photography "how to" advice. That's when things started to get complicated.

When I looked around self publishing and printing on demand publication, I found that they wanted all images at 300 dpi or more. It was a total shock to me. I had thousands of images ready to use, but they were all rescued in 72dpi. I thought Photoshop could save me again if I started to convert to 300dpi, but something is not right. My 300dpi images considered worse than my 72dpi images. I was at a loss. Then I returned and my research.

The reason why the images on a CD of the laboratory are so enormous (measure) is that you can use images in any format. 72dpi is exactly 25% of 300dpi. If you want your images 300dpi appearance razor sharp as the images on your 72dpi done online, printing must be 75% smaller. In other words, an image that measures 44 inches x 56 inches 72dpi would be the same quality as the image that measures 11 inches x 14 inches at 300dpi.

If you take a picture that was originally 5x7-inch 72dpi and try to convert directly to 300dpi, this is not a pretty picture. Similar to the equivalent of the right f-stop and shutter speed right, you should take two factors into account! Size of DPI and are always linked together. You can not change without affecting others. It is much easier to do something that looks good smaller, than trying to expand something after the fact and try to make it look even close to the original. However, the best photo tip I can give a new beginning today is: ALWAYS save your images bigger than you intend to use. Do not waste 15 years of your life and thousands and thousands of images that can be used in a way. Always save big!

[TIPS]How to Running Apple Mac OS X on Windows Standard PC!

Apple MacBook Air, iPhone and iPod May be fashionable, but the company desktops are still relatively rare: analysts although the figures vary, desktop computers Apple certainly less than 10 percent of the global market.

This low market share is often attributed to the relatively high prices of Apple computers. However, another reason could be the fact that users rarely have an opportunity to experience Mac OS before buying a computer. This would require a visit to one of Apple stores or Mac host a landlord friend. But there is another way: For some time, different images of Mac OS X have been available on the Internet that have been modified to circumvent the tight coupling the application equipment. These allow the operating system to be installed on a standard PC. So far, Apple has taken no action against such activities, indicating perhaps that the "buzz" around its OS is not entirely unwelcome.

Network, sound and graphics cards

A support network equipment, sound and graphics cards is generally good, although problems may still arise. After booting Mac OS X Leopard X1000 with a graphics card, drivers can be installed to ensure that the new GPU offers plenty of graphics acceleration. You can even use an ATI HD 3870 X2, although Mac OS X will not use the second in this high-end GPU card. Nevertheless, the second chip is recognized and you can use the (four) DVI outputs to connect other monitors - like a Mac Pro with two graphics cards. Almost all outstanding graphics drivers digital LCD connections, but it is possible that in certain configurations only analog VGA mode will be active. Multi-screen operation is not a problem: after connecting a second monitor, Mac OS extends the area office automatically.

Installation leopard on a standard PC

For our test installation leopard on a standard PC, we used the Gigabyte GA-X38T-DQ6 for the Intel platform, and the GA-MA790FX-DQ6 for AMD platform. The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 with a 750GB SATA interface and capacity, while the DVD player is a ASUS DRW1814BLT, also with a SATA interface. DVD System

Mac OS initially finds no partition on a new disc, Disk Utility and must be used to create one or more partitions. Light Studio for Photographers (Tabletop)

This instructable shows you the easy, inexpensive, and quick way to create a light box
that can get you the same photographic results as a 150 dollar light box.
The only difference is that this one can ultimately be built for under 10 dollars.
For those of you out there that don't mind spending a few extra bucks or for some reason hate recycling,
you can spend up to 30, but hey, its still cheap and way less than those "official" light box rip offs.

step 1
Get Materials
Refer to the image for materials.
Keep in mind what you may plan to shoot pictures of, for it will be a good factor in deciding
how big you want your box to be. Since were laying poster board in the box, I would recommend that you keep
the boxes' dimensions within the width of the poster board.
The two colors of poster board I would recommend getting are white and black, but of course its also good
to experiment and I find that blue and red also make good backgrounds.
But, use any colors you wish. The color of the poster board sets the "mood" for the picture i.e.
black background would be for like sleek watches or high dollar items, where as white may be for something
like a vase with flowers, or something "light" and "airy"

step 2
Prep the Box

The first thing you will need to do is get the box ready so you can apply the screen windows
(vinyl shower curtain in my case)
You only assemble the bottom of the box, leave the top of the box flaps open, but make sure the bottom is taped shut.
Try to tape the flaps together very closely to avoid a lot of light to get through.
Now lay the box on its side and assuming your box is square the side that is now facing up is your new top.
This is how the box will be oriented from now on, whenever you take photographs.
Make sure the open end is towards you and cut the top and bottom flaps off of the box, but make sure you leave
the left and right flaps.
Now (I used a carpenters square but I assume most people don't have a 3 foot square laying around, basically all you need is a straight edge.
Get your marker and trace straight lines parallel to all edges creating a square shape on each side of the box, left, right, top and bottom.
Make sure to leave about 2 inches of space between your lines and the edge of the box. If you have a larger box, I would go with 3 or more inches.
Use your judgment on this one. Now if it helps, keep using your straight edge (whatever you may have used) and use it
to aid you in using the utility knife to cut the squares out of each side of the box.
Be sure to leave the former bottom now currently the back of the box taped up.
Don't cut the back of the box that you taped up.

The picture should clear any questions you may have up.
Areas in gray are the sections of the box that are to be eliminated.

step 3
Cut and Apply Light Diffusing Material to Box Windows

This step involves cutting your material, in my case a vinyl shower curtain to fit the open spaces
on the sides of the box.
Get your measuring tape or w/e you have and measure the square spaces in the sides of your box to get an idea
of how big to cut your squares of material.
Going past the edge is key here, in case you may not have realized that.
So if your square space is 18 inches by 18 inches then you want your square piece of material to be 20 or 21 inches.
The look of the box isn't important, so going over the edge and doing a crappy tape job isn't the end of the world.
You can still make it look neat if you tape the material on from the inside of the box.
You could also glue it if that floats your boat.
The 2 or more inches of space you left at the edges is where you will attach the light diffusing material to, whether you do it from the inside of the box or outside of the box.
As you can see I just taped mine on the outside with duct tape. Look at the image notes.
The bottom of the box does not need covered with the light diffusing material, leave the hole..as a hole.
The poster board will be covering the bottom anyway.

Note: Try to keep your material tight or "stretched" so to speak so its not all saggy or droopy in effort not to cause serious shadows or detectable light distortion....
creases aren't a big deal as you can see my shower curtain has creases in it and I have found no effects in my photos.

step 4
Buying Poster Board and Lights
Now your box is basically done. All that we need now are light sources and backdrops.
You can use anything as a backdrop if you are one of those creative types and can make it work.
I find that poster board works very well. The thing to make sure is that the intersection of the bottom and back of box is underneath the curved portion of your backdrop.
This is crucial in order to create a photo without having a crease revealed, and rather makes an illusion of having an infinite nothingness behind your subject.
The more gradual the curve of the backdrop, the less immediate gradient of shadow.
It just takes some experimenting, but you will find that it works fine the first time you try it.
You can use lamps that you already have or buy new ones from Walmart or something.
step 5
Setting Up Lighting
Now that you have everything done you are ready to take some photos.
The only thing you may want to do now is learn more about lighting and still life photography.
Arranging the lights and angles can drastically change the effects or mood of your photos, along with other various factors.
There are other articles and tutorials that go in depth about still life photography and studio shooting that you can look into,
I figured you would get more professional advice by searching Google than me mushing a few things here and there in with this instructable.

Just unveiled: The new Nikon SB-900 speedlight. From what I can see, it is fairly similar to nothing like the '800, except that it will zoom out to a 200mm beam spread.

That would be will be so cool, as it basically will give you a built-in Better Beamer, which can concentrate the light for better reach (or higher f/stop) and/or to create a nice grid spot effect.

I will probably get one, but I will definitely still be based on SB-800's for a while.

In fact, this may well drive down the price of SB-800s. Not so much at retail -- Nikon has their price points distributed pretty well for the '600, '800 and '900. But there will be a lot of people who will unload '800's into the market when they get their new '900. (I mean, who needs more than one flash, right?)

And yes, this is probably the only photo site that cares more about the new strobe than the new D-700. If anyone gets hands-on time, please report in via the comments. Thanks!

6 Tips to Keep Your Camera Lens Clean!

Dirt on your DSLR lens is one of the main factors that reduces the image quality of your photos. Although some defects caused by small spots may be repairable in post processing, larger dirts most probably will probably make your photo useless. Even a tiny stain that you haven't noticed or ignored during the shoot out can ruin hours of hard work at the end of the day. The most important fact that you have to consider before cleaning your lens is to choose a proper method to make sure you don't scratch your lens surface.

Here we present 6 tips for you to effectively clean (and keep clean) your DSLR lens without giving any damage to it. Remember most of these methods presented here are also applicable to compact digicam and other kind of optical devices:

1 - Use a UV (Ultraviolet) Filter

This relatively cheap filter is a perfect protection for your valuable lens, both from dirt and other impacts. You will be cleaning the filter, thus minimizing the risk of scratching the actual lens surface. We recommend you to keep this filter attached all times, but remember to choose a high quality one otherwise it may degrade the quality of the output image. Since different lenses may have different filter diameters, you may have to purchase one for each of your lens.

2- Use lens hoods, and lens caps for both front and back end of your lens

The benefits are obvious, keep them attached all the time. Do not forget to keep the lens caps clean when they are not attached.

3- Don't let dust get in to your camera body

Dust inside your DSLR will attach to the back end element of your lens and also to the image sensor, double trouble. When you are changing lenses, try to find a place with minimum dust and wind, and aim your camera to the floor to minimize the chance of dust getting inside.

4- Use a Blower

Blowers can be used directly to the lens and also inside of your camera. This is a very secure way of cleaning your lens since there is no physical contact with the glass, but on the other hand not very effective as the others.

5- Get a Lens Cleaning Fluid

A small amount of alcohol based lens cleaning fluid makes it eaiser to wipe oil, fingerprints and contaminants off your lens. Lens cleaning fluids are applied to your lens by the help of a cleaning cloth or tissue, instead of directly pouring on the lens surface. Check the lens surface and cleaning clothes to make sure there is no big particles because these particles can stratch your lens easily while cleaning. An alternative to alcohol based cleaning fluids is to simply breathe on the glass then clean it with a cloth. If this doesn't get enough, you may choose to use the fluids.

6- Use a Lens Cleaning Pen

Lens Cleaning Pens are really useful tools with a cleaning pad on one side and a brush on the other. The retractable brush made of soft bristles is used to dust away the hard particles and contaminants. I would recommend you to buy a high quality one with very soft brush to avoid scratching the glass.

I would like to remind that the best protection solutions for your lens is the preventive methods: Stop contaminants before getting on your lens surface. Do not use the cleaning methods those requires physical contact until there is no other option left. And buy the highest quality tools which minimizes the risk of scratching your valuable lenses.
