Building Organizations report to Obama Administration on Energy-Efficiency Recommendations

BOMA (The Buildings Owners and Managers Association), USGBC, and 14 other organizations recently released a report to the Obama Administration advocating almost 36 measures that the administration can take across 23 agency programs to further the economic and environmental effects of green building without introducing new legislation.

According to an article on Eco-structure.com:

The report, “Better Buildings through Executive Action: Leveraging Existing Authorities to Promote Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Multifamily and Commercial Buildings,” further develops an April 2010 report that detailed nearly 100 legal authority opportunities across 30 federal programs to enhance energy efficiency in U.S. buildings. Many recommendations from that report are seen in the Obama Administration’s Better Buildings Initiative, such as improving the Energy Efficiency Commercial Building Tax Deduction, using Department of Energy loan guarantees, and using the Small Business Administration’s financing programs to fund the energy-efficient retrofits of commercial buildings.

In this new report, recommendations include helping building owners access aggregated data on tenant energy consumption in multitenant structures, revising guidance on the use of Section 179D, facilitating the use of widely recognized residential energy-efficiency labels and more. Colorado: The leading state for LEED Buildings

Precision Construction West came across some great news! Based on 2010 U.S. Census data, Colorado is the leading state for LEED buildings with 2.74 square feet per person. District of Colombia came in first overall with over 18 million square feet of LEED-certified space, and 31.50 square feet per person.

This is great information because according to Rick Fedrizzi, the president, CEO, and founding chair of the USGBC, “Looking past the bricks and mortar, people are at the heart of what buildings are all about. Examining the per capita value of LEED square footage in these states allows us to focus on what matters most—the human elements of green buildings.”

Other top states on the list are Illinois, Virginia, and Washington, with 2.69, 2.42, and 2.18 square feet of LEED-certified space per person, respectively.

Modern in the Mountains

Living amongst the Rocky Mountains, in Aspen’s historic West End, there is a beautiful family home with a modern edge. However, it did not always look the way it does now. After a nine month long renovation the home finally became a modern gem in the mountains.

The home’s original kitchen was set up for help, however, the home’s current owners wanted to cook, entertain and wanted it open so guests could come in.

The ceiling was the only part of the original home that was kept, everything else was gutted, replacing windows, floors and doors.

The master bathroom was renovated into a calm retreat where the owners could have a spa-like experience everyday.
