The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar.

Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:
Eating mooncakes, traditionally consisting primarily of lotus bean paste.

Drinking tea.

Matchmaking. In some parts of China, dances are held for young men and women to find partners. "One by one, young women are encouraged to throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd. The young man who catches and returns the handkerchief has a chance of romance.

Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns.

Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'eFire Dragon Dances.

Solving riddles, or miyu in Mandarin Chinese, usually written on slips of paper and pasted on the lanterns.Moon rabbit is a traditional icon.
The Fallen

This was one of those serendipitous moments in photography where everything came together in perfect unison. We went to Hyde Park hoping to photograph the beginnings of winter but came across the lake literally filled with these leaves. The more recent had fallen on top and we could see the earlier ones were gradually turning black and sinking to the bottom. This had a magical effect where we could see layer upon layer of leaves going all the way to the bottom of the lake.
I took several exposures and merged these together to get this image. A week later when we returned, the leaves were gone. Truly a chance encounter.

The bonsai rock, a popular spot.
I spent a few days in the Lake Tahoe area this past week and took every advantage to collect some images. I spent much of my time collecting content for a time-lapse project you'll soon see, yet I managed to come away with some beautiful still images of the alpine scenery. There are a few famous spots for photography around this enormous glacial lake, one of which you see below. Amongst photographers, this place is commonly referred to as the "Bonsai Rock" for obvious reasons. Despite its popularity, there are no trails that lead to the spot. Instead you have to locate an unmarked, unpaved turnout a third of a mile south of Sand Harbor on the Nevada side along Route 28 and hike off the road to the shore down the steep western slope, picking your way along the winding path that the rain and snow runoff clears through the brush. I spent two mornings and two evenings photographing the skies and waters of Tahoe, but only here at Bonsai Rock did I ever see another photographer. In two visits here, I saw a total of three fellow photographers come and go to try their lens at capturing something splendid. Everyone was very quiet and we stayed out of each others' way - and I had a nice chat with a photographer named John during sunrise two mornings after these photographs were taken.
The sun slipped behind the blue wall of the gathering storm and the other photographers left. Each person is motivated by his own muse, and I won't pretend to dictate how another should make his images, but I chuckle to myself at times like this, when a photographer waits and waits in one spot to reproduce a popular photograph, tripod at eye level, not using his or her feet, and then flies when it becomes clear no direct rays of sunset will hit the quarry. I remain behind, however, committed to enjoying some time alone amongst the boulders in the gloaming of an October evening. When later I regain the road, there's a smirk on my face - I wonder if the other photographers would be jealous, knowing what I captured by spending another sublime 60 minutes on the waters of the high country as blue hour unfailingly comes whether rain or shine or snow or sleet?
The tempest.
Alone, quiet, I scrambled over one of the shoreline boulders and set up my tripod to take a four minute exposure. I was bored with the images taken from the more popular vantage points, where the footing was dry and easy and the composition cluttered. It can be a bit spooky all by yourself out in bear country when the sun sets and a moonless, cloudy night sets in. A few moments of peace amongst the stones while the clicking and clattering bats began to flit from their grottos and skim the blue glass of Tahoe are reward enough, however. Isolation, symmetry and asymmetry, a silhouette and the brushstrokes of the gathering tempest.

Contrast that sublime blue hour light with what was available prior to sunset, when the other photographers packed it in.

In the winter, large waves break in portions of Haena Beach that are not protected by the coral reef. This one is over 10 feet tall from its base. They can get even larger during large winter storms.

This was a rather tricky shot to get right because so many things were happening in a chaotic order. But I wanted to show all the best things happening at once. After every shot, I had to run, as I planted the tripod right in the path of the waves to get the closest view. Standing back on the dry part of the beach makes the action look distant, even if you zoom in. It is more dramatic to use a wide-angle and get close! These waves looked best just before the break, as the light penetrated through them. The sand glistened and moved for just a second before drying up, so timing was important. See my notes on the image.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I'm writing an app for apple and Android devices about photographing the California coast! I'll be done in a couple of months.

I have many new photos of Kauai to share. For this, I had to bail out several times when bigger waves would strike. This place could be extremely dangerous during the winter and I DO NOT suggest you try this during big surf!!!
---------------------------------------------------------
The Story:
---------------------------------------------------------

From a trail near the Princeville hotel, you gain access to some incredible coastal scenery including a large lava swimming pool called "Queen's Bath" but on this evening I wanted to capture these falls as they enter the ocean as they are lit by the last rays of the sun. The falls do not show up well in photographs unless the golden sun is striking them during the summer. I had to get into a small area under a lava ledge and stand on extramely slippery rounded rock at low tide to get this view. The best time to shoot this (because of the angle of the sun hittin gthe water) is probably the summer.

---------------------------------------------------------
Resources:
---------------------------------------------------------

Google Earth
earth.google.com/

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.
