Furniture for a New Design School

What simplicity is this? This set of furniture, seats and tables, is made by students of the school of art and design Saint-étienne in France. What’s fun? It’s made for a new construction of the school of Arts and design of Saint-étienne in the Cité du design. In and beyond that, this is a set of seats and tables with designers in mind.

Take a look in particular at the sawhorse-looking constructs there that are made to hold the tabletops up. Imagine how versatile. Imagine how compact these tables and chairs could get. Ease in carrying, moving. Stackability and simplicity.

Now if you’ll take a moment to listen here about a design school I was at. I wont name it but you could discover it pretty easily if you try. We had “classrooms of the future” in which there were plugs and switches and projectors and curved tables and nice chairs and everything. -but they didn’t really work any better than the classrooms that had basic tables and basic chairs, outlets around the rim of the room and wireless capability. Point is – the devices we use in design school are built to be versatile in and of themselves, the furniture’s best to be as simple as what you see right here!

I think they nailed it.

Matt Hoyle recently received first place in the PDN PIX Digital Imaging Awards category of Portraits/Celebs/Music. Matt won the judges over with both his humorous portrait of the “Godfather of Web-based comedy” Eugene Mirman (above), and his ability to composite his photograph of Mirman with a self created CGI background in order to deliver the final image.

Jenny Dubanu is a realist portrait painter who’s work totally threw me for a loop. She works from photographs as reference, recreating them I would say fairly faithfully. She enjoys painting people in those in-between moments that only a camera can capture. When you look at the paintings you know that it came from a photograph, but her mastery of oil painting truly makes these stunning works of art. I wish I could do this!

Anish Kapoor at the Royal Academy

We nipped along to the Royal Academy over the weekend to check out the Anish Kapoor show that opened there recently.

The show collects together a few of Kapoor's early pieces, including some of the pigment works from the 80s; as well as two of his amorphous works: When I Am Pregnant (1992), and Yellow (1999).

The rest of the exhibition is made up of work from the past three years. Of these, there are a range of mirror pieces, the Non-Object series, which are like a hall of mirrors for grown-ups; and three large site-specific installations. The largest of these, Svayambh (2007), takes up five rooms in the gallery, and is an immense thirty-ton block of wax that inches its way on tracks through a series of the Academy's arched doorways.

The companion to this is Shooting into the Corner (2008-2009), in which a canon is fired at twenty minute intervals, shooting twenty pound shells of red wax from one room into another, in the process splattering the walls, floor and ceiling of the gallery with wax shrapnel.

All in all it's an intriguingly visceral show, with the installations working particularly well in the classical spaces of the Royal Academy. Unfortunately, our experience of it was hampered by a rather rigidly enforced no-photography policy, with gallery attendants actually shouting at anyone they saw trying to take a picture. We just don't get why galleries do this. We emailed the Academy to ask about it, and Vistitor Services Manager Natasha Bennett replied:

"Photography is not permitted in the Anish Kapoor exhibition owing to copyright issues. I am sorry if this affected your enjoyment of the exhibition but this is standard in loan exhibitions, as the Royal Academy of Arts does not own the works."

To our mind it's a damn shame, preventing visitors from interacting with the work in a creative way. And since you can photograph one of the works in the gallery's courtyard, surely it can't hurt to let people photograph all of the works. After all, people are going to take pictures anyway, as this Flickr search happily reveals.

Crazy Cutlery With Identity Crisis

Does the Chopork have an identity crisis? Like would you classify it as a fork or a chopstick or both? Nah! I wouldn’t bother much about the functionality of two sticks turning from a fork to chopsticks. I’d be worried about branding it as Chopork; sounds more like chop-the-pork! Got any better name suggestions?

Beat IV: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' is a fully illustrated edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridgeâs epic poem published by the Heart Agency to showcase the work of their roster of illustrators. Pentagram based their design concept around the idea that Heart wanted to produce a contemporary rendition of a classic, creating a design inspired by the graphic language of old books. Heartâs edition of Coleridgeâs supernatural tale spans 82 pages, with each of Heartâs 36 illustrators producing a double-page spread to accompany sections of the text. The illustrators were provided with classically inspired page layouts involving empty picture frames to incorporate into their artwork. The dust jacket has the appearance of an old book that has been defaced by Jimmy Turrell, the cover artist.
