There’s a Pest in the Garden by Jan Thomas is a funny story about a pest that keeps eating the vegetables in the garden. With silly humor and lots of repetition, Duck tries to come up with a plan to stop the problem.

How a Seed Grows by Helene Jordan

This book explains how a tiny seed grows into a plant or tree. With clear illustrations and simple explanations, the book helps children learn about the stages of plant growth and what seeds need in order to grow.

Rhyming is one of the best ways to boost phonological awareness. In this activity, children listen for pairs of rhyming words and match them. With this cow spinner alphabet game, children will spin the spinner, say the letter, and find the letter on their mat. Free Printable: Position Word Mats

These Fall Position Word Mats are easy to prepare and fun for kids. Just print the mat, give children pom poms, and read the sentences to the group. Children will move the pom pom to the correct spot on the mat.

For example:

• Put a pumpkin under a haystack.
• Put a pumpkin beside the mouse.
• Put a pumpkin between two wheels.

The children love moving their pom poms around the scene while they practice spatial concepts. It also sneaks in some fine motor practice while they pinch and move the pom poms – you can have them use tweezers with them, or just fingers for the pincer grasp.

Why Position Words Matter

Position words aren’t just a vocabulary lesson—they’re a big part of everyday life. Think about how often children need to understand directions like “Line up behind your friend” or “Put your paper on the table.” Practicing these words now helps children follow directions, build comprehension, and develop important spatial awareness. Summer Alphabet Game

The Summer Alphabet game is a hands-on learning activity with letters on a beach scene! Each card shows four letters on sand buckets, and children are challenged to spot the two matching letters on each card.

Some of the letters used are similar in shape, such as h, n, r, so that children are practicing their visual discrimination skills to determine which letters are the same and which are different. This is a foundational skill for reading.

How to Play the Summer Alphabet Game

To play the game, place the cards in a stack or in a container. Children will choose a card and decide which two letters on the card are the same. For example, on a card with the letters “R B D B” (as shown in the image below), children will determine that the letter B’s are the same. For self-checking, you can write the answer on the back of the card, if you choose.

You can have children mark the two letters that match with clothespins, transparent colored chips, mini erasers, seasonal table scatter pieces, the possibilities are endless!

Differentiating the Game

The Summer Alphabet Game includes both uppercase and lowercase letters. You can use the two sets for differentiation: Use one set or both sets depending on your students’ needs. Some children may find it easier to recognize uppercase letters, while others may be ready for lowercase.

Optional Recording Sheet: An optional recording sheet is included, but the game can be played with or without the sheet. To use the recording sheet, children will take a card, find the matching letter, and mark that letter on the sheet. They will continue with the set of cards until they have found all of the letters A-Z. There are recording sheets for both uppercase and lowercase.

When to Use the Summer Alphabet Game

This game is perfect for Small Group, Center Time, or Arrival Time. It also works well as a group or independent activity.

Easy Prep & Ink Saving!

The game is easy prep, and in black-and-white to save ink. All you’ll need to do is print and cut! The black-and-white also helps if you use transparent colored chips as a manipulative — it’s easier to see the chips marking the letter. You can also print these on brightly colored card stock paper, if you choose.

You can do Float and Sink activities inside or outside as a small group, or inside in the Sensory Table.

Materials Needed:
Tubs of water (one for every pair of children)
Small items that will float
Small items that will sink
Towels

Set Up:
Fill tubs with water. Gather float and sink items, and sort them into bowls or containers.

Procedure:
Give each pair of children a tub of water, and tell them they are going to test several things to see if they will float or sink. Pass each child a bottle cap, and ask them to make a prediction whether they think the cap will float or sink.  Ask them to place the bottle cap in the water to see what happens. Have children test each of the items in the same manner, making a prediction first, then testing them. Do not pass out all of the items at once; instead, pass them out one at a time, randomly. Each child gets their own item to test in the water, but each pair of children shares a tub of water.

Pebble
Penny
Marble
Metal spoon
Key
Seashell
Paperclip
Button
Toy fish (like a math manipulative fish)

Bottle Cap or Lid
