I don’t know if the recruitment of Las Vegas athletes has changed over the years! I have a hard time believing it has because of the poor state of the Local UNLV football program. I’m not saying they don’t recruit in their own back yard, I’m just saying with all the talent in Las Vegas they should be able to put together a team that can compete every saturday night! I have seen enough talent in our City alone that can contribute right now to the success of their program. Lets look at a quick glance of just a few to mention:

Eddie Wide III (Utah) Cimmirron,

George Morales (Michigan) Mojave ,

Reggie Powers (Feather River JC) Mojave ,

Justin Armstrong (Michigan Tech) Mojave,

Rashaun Greer (Colorado St) Mojave, (Now with the Chicago Bears)

Quinton Carter (Oklahoma) Cheyenne,

Reggie Bullock (Arizona Western)Western,

Lawrence Guy (Arizona St) Western,

Korey Toomer (Idaho) Shadow Ridge,

Those were a few of the athletes who are playing or have played out of state that could have put UNLV back on the map. Why aren’t they here?, and how do we let that kind of talent get out of the state year after year?. Las Vegas has a wealth of talent, so when are we going to do something to keep that talent in Las Vegas and build Our college program! Let me know. I would definitely like to be a part of the recruiting process!

The myth about athletes of today attending junior college is that you are somehow taking a step back in your career. The truth is that route takes longer, but sometimes that’s the best decision to help you attain your goal of playing for a division one school! The athletes of today are so caught up in the flashy plays of the game and their performance, that they forget about their academic requirements. They seem to think the success they have in their junior and senior year on the field, overshadows their GPA from the freshman and sophomore years. I see it all too many times where a kid finally gets his academics together by his senior year, but he has the track record from the past three years holding him back. However, all is not lost, enrolling into a JC can help you get back on track and get the exposure and make up for the poor grades before your senior year. After playing at a JC you will have earned an associate degree, and pretty much know if football is in your future. If you decide not to play anymore, you have the degree to use as a stepping stone to your next level of education. I am a firm believer whom you can become a better player, student, and overall person with the junior college experience under your belt. My motto is using your god given talent to get an education. Without the education, you will become another statistic, and always talk about what you could have done. I know players that have gone to junior colleges, and then on to division one school and end up living their dream of playing in the NFL. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but if you don’t make it, you have your education to fall back on. So in a nut shell, yes, JC can be the answer for some kids. We as coaches have to educate our athletes on the alternative routes to college, and dispel the notions that going to a JC is a step backwards!

Wow! I have watched the games so far this year I have noticed a changing of the guard.. I remember when, Shadow Ridge , liberty, Legacy, Arbor View just a few to mention were brand new schools.. The school played easier schedules to acclimate to the rough tough, and down right bigger tougher and traditionally dominant schools. However a few of these “dominate schools” got waxed this past weekend by those young and inexperience schools. I think change is coming, and it’s a breath of fresh air to see Las Vegas football on the rise. Stay tuned.

It’s a boy (or girl), there you are smiling taking photos, calling grandparents, family and friends making announcements. That right, you are a parent, you are so proud, your baby! FLASHFORWARD! Senior year is here, questions are coming in faster than you can answer, most of them, you are asking yourself! Did you prepare him for the next level? Yeah, AAU, Pop Warner, NYFL, out of town tournaments, high school sports, etc… , you dream of watching your baby during the BCS season, and your child is plastered all over the television. Then you hear a loud ringing noise! It’s the alarm, you wake up to another hot summer day in Las Vegas, you get out of the bed, you leave your room on a repeated trip down the hallway to your baby’s room. As you walk past all the awards and trophies that your baby accumulated through the years. You get to his door, you just walk in frustration to find your baby sleeping, you wake him, and you ask him the same question you asked him yesterday, last week, last month, last year, ” did you enroll in college, or hear anything from the school today….. “ Did you fail?

Lets review, did you know that more than 50% of the programs (AAU, Pop Warner, NYFL, etc…) aren’t really teaching your child anything, other than giving you that warm and fuzzy feeling on the weekend when you get to watch your child play his 5 minutes or 5 plays as required by some of the leagues. Let’s not forget the monthly dues, the tournament fees and the cost of the beautiful uniforms and team attire. Yeah, you have all those dreams in your head that your child is the next Micheal Jordan or Adrian Peterson. Parents its okay to dream, it’s even okay to let your child explore his passion for sports, in his desired sport. Your child may not want to go any further than high school with it. Understand that this article is directed specifically at the parent that has discussed this topic with the child and you both have agreed to pursue an athletic scholarship.

Let me get to the point, in these modern times of the information highway, Mom and Dad you have the ultimate responsibility to prepare your baby, so get on the Internet or ask the coach about training programs and camps and combines within the state and outside. Preparation is the key to your child’s success, you don’t just get ready to play football or any sport 3 weeks before the season starts and expect to be among the elite players in the country. Go to your child’s practice, stay and watch, see what’s going on, ask the coach about your child’s progress, has your baby become a student of the game? Mom and Dad you study the position that your child is playing, so you can know what he is supposed to do, or if he is mentally and physically fit to play that position. Find out the coach’s experience, is just filling the position, or is he just the guy that needed the extra money to supplement his income. Does the coach have a relationship with the local university coach or any others? Is your coach committed to your child’s success or just his own? Does your child have professional high light video that he can send out to the different Universities upon request or are you relying on the coach or the school? Meet and establish a relationship with your child’s academic advisers, make sure your child is on track to graduate, make sure he has taken all the entry exams.

Mom and Dad, again its your responsibility to monitor their academic levels and athletic opportunities, there are dates and deadlines, find out what they are. This is a never ending topic, and I will return to it throughout the year in my “Quest” to get Las Vegas athletics on the next level, with the idea and concept of PremierBall-Football, “no player left behind.”

As I view the footage of Liberty High School football spring training and after school workouts, It is hard to believe that one school could have wall to wall talent as this school. I am talking on both sides of the ball, these kids are big strong and fast. Family and Dedication are the words that come to my head when I see them prepare for the up coming season. I will have to do several parts to this article because to highlight only one player from this team would be a disservice to the football fan. Today Sam Tai is our Player of the Week, 6’3, 230 TE/DE/OLB. Sam has national attention and is one of Nevada’s Top High School Prospects! Congrats Sam! and I look forward to watching you grow this year as you move forward toward you goals… this team has many more stay tuned!

I spoke with him during spring training and he spoke with confidence, stating that this would be a great year for him, since then he has continued to get national attention. Standing 6’2 (and growing) 270 pounds, Big hands, long arms and quick feet he has colleges across the country fighting to get their hands on him. Stay tuned as we will follow his progress this year as the Football season begins..
