Ariana Washington said she wasn't fazed by Sweden's Irene Ekelund running a wind-legal 23.02 seconds in the 200-meter heats Friday at the eighth IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships, the fastest time by a 17-under athlete this year, a distinction that had previously belonged to the Poly standout.

But it was the start of American teammate Ky Westbrook that wound up being too much for Poly standout Washington, and the rest of the challengers, to overcome in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Northern California had no answer for Peninsula's Ena Shibahara and Oasis High's Monica Robinson at the 40th annual Maze Cup tennis tournament. Thanks to its efforts in boys singles competition, however, Northern California was finally able to solve the bigger puzzle Saturday against Southern California at Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield.

During a junior season that encountered few obstacles and little difficulty, there were several anxious moments experienced Wednesday by Poly standout Ariana Washington. But despite narrow setbacks in both the 100- and 200-meter finals at Southern Illinois University, Washington -- the reigning state champion in both events -- still met her goal of achieving a spot on the U.S. roster to compete at the eighth IAAF World Youth track and field championships.
