Run to recognize mom this year during the Virtual Mother's Day Run

For something different on Mother’s Day, consider taking part in the Virtual Mother’s Day Run. Whether you live in Timbuktu or beautiful Savannah, GA, these events let you join a community of runners around the country honoring Mom and getting healthy.Visit the official Virtual Mother’s Day Run site and register.  Then choose your own running route and hit the road!

In Savannah GA, running events are plentiful and there are lots of routes to choose from. Head out to Forsyth Park and run laps around this nice park or explore the surrounding streets lined by trees and historical homes. This site has a good map to review for your convenience.

One of the more unique options you might want to consider would be to run the Savannah Bridge to Daffin Park, around 12 miles roundtrip.  It’s best to run early in the morning to avoid traffic on the bridge.

If you are willing to leave the city, there’s a nice rails to trails path along on Tybee Island that has a nice view of the water. This site can get you there.

The Historic Savannah Theatre hosts everything from concerts to theatrical performances

Some of the finest entertainment in Savannah, GA, can be found at the Historic Savannah Theatre, which has been a part of the city since 1818. During its near two-hundred years of existence the theater has suffered destruction and reconstructions and today stands as a gorgeous sample of the 1940s Art Deco style.

“The Beat Goes On” is being showcased at the theater during May and June. The musical is a tribute to the hits of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the years that changed attitudes in the world and that produced some of the best tunes ever written.

An evening at the Savannah Theatre can take you back to those decades of bright colors, hair spray, and fun, and even further back in time as you explore the history of the structure itself through the exhibit placed in the theater’s lobby.

Grab the family and create something beautiful.

Playing an integral role in Savannah’s cultural history for more than a century, Telfair Museums continues to support the arts by educating the youngsters in Savannah.  You can take advantage of this fantastic institution and bring along the whole family from your apartment at Preston Grove.

Every week the museums provide art instruction where families can learn about what goes into creating a beautiful piece and then get their hands dirty actually doing. Classes are forming for youth, toddlers and families.

So why do they call it museums?

Telfair Museums actually consists of three separate buildings — two National Historic Landmarks and a contemporary Moshe Safdie-designed building. They are located within walking distance of each other in Savannah’s vibrant historic district.

A single admission fee lets you visit all three buildings at your leisure for one week. Once inside you can take in the original works of contemporary masters such as Jasper Johns, Richard Avedon and Frank Stella at the Jepson Center; be transported back to the 19th-century as you tour authentic period rooms at the Owens-Thomas House; or view stunning examples of American Impressionism at the Telfair Academy.

It’s time to take action.

Actually Autism Awareness isn’t enough anymore. That’s the message being sent by the Autism Science Foundation, and they are standing behind their words with a full schedule of actions and events you can get involved with from Savannah or anywhere.

The full schedule of Autism Awareness Month “to dos” is available on their site. Activities include reading books such as Autism’s False Prophets, participating in local autism advocacy events and attending a live chat with a scientist.

Everything associated with Autism Awareness Month is about educating yourself and then finding a way to take action. And it’s time.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently estimated that about 1 in 88 children have been identified with autism. With 1 in 54 boys identified, the largest increases were found among African American and Hispanic children.

The Autism Science Foundation can help you get moving by providing information and tips for hosting our own event. Living in a apartment community such as Preston Grove gives you the opportunity to recruit your neighbors and friends to join your effort and multiply the impact.

The goal: Keeping Savannah beautiful.

“Keeping America Beautiful Month” is all about the obligation we all share to protect and preserve our environment. Preston Grove residents in Savannah, GA are no different.

Led by the City of Savannah and a group of dedicated citizens, “Keep Savannah Beautiful” is the local affiliate of the “Keep America Beautiful” program. These organizations are dedicated to improving waste handling practices.

This is the perfect organization for anyone interested in, well, keeping Savannah beautiful and at the same time educating the public on waste management issues.

Both organizations follow  a practical approach that unites citizens, businesses and government to find solutions that advance the core issues of preventing litter, reducing waste, and beautifying communities.

National Day of Action, April 28

The “Keep America Beautiful” campaign set a lofty goal of 4 million citizens all volunteering on one day for the Great American Cleanup.

Sorry dads, this one’s for the ladies of the house! For the 3rd year, the folks over at Coastal Mommies and Savannah News have started and ran this contest where moms and their mini-me daughters, ‘snap & snap‘ until they’ve found the right picture to enter in the contest. Some have themes, some have costumes, and some just plain old get to the point—pictures are voted on based on looks and resemblance (a little creativity won’t hurt either)!
