A Horsey Affair: Join Event Participants in Downtown Newnan for a Day to Remember!

A Horsey Affair is coming to Newnan in June

For an equine adventure check out the “We’re Having A Horsey Affair” in Newnan, Georgia near Preston Mill.Fiberglass horses have been let loose in downtown Newnan and local artists have put their own flare on them with colorful, creative details. Other towns have done similar events with cows, turtles or even bulldogs, but Newnan is the first city in Georgia to feature horses. This event, sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, raises money for a children’s interactive museum planned to be put in a portion of the old Newnan Hospital.

The horses first began galloping through in April and they will be in town near Preston Mill until mid-July. On June 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the artists will be stationed at their equine muse to talk about their individual inspirations and decorating processes. If you can’t get to see the horses in person, there is also a soft-bound book available that details all 25 horses. You can get it from several businesses in town and all proceeds go to the museum project.

Having a kitty around can be the difference between a lonely apartment and one that is filled with love and joy. One of the good things about these pets is that they are pretty low-maintenance and self-sufficient. They are around to cuddle but can also go off on their own when you aren’t around or are doing something around the apartment. He definitely had a hard life before, but we have faith that Reese will find an amazing forever home. Reese is up-to-date on all his vaccines and tested negative for FIV/FeLV. Sam is Chloe’s brother and was bottle fed as well from the age of 2 weeks . Sam is so unique! His undercoat is completely white but when you look at him, you think he is a soft black cat…almost gray. When you brush the fur back, you can see all the white roots. It is almost like he was a white cat that became a chimney sweep! He is gorgeous and SO laidback. He loves to be held, brushed and petted. He is 100% trusting and gives the love right back. Chloe and Sam are a great pair, and it would be nice to keep them together. However, they should do fine in separate homes if needed. Sam is housebroken and very much non-destructive. He enjoys the company of another cat. So, if the adoptive family does not want to take the brother and sister pair together, we are hopeful there is another animal in the home to join him. Sam is neutered, tested negative for Feline Aids and Leukemia and is completely vaccinated. Marge is a big girl at 11 lbs. but she is sweet and loving. She would really like to have a person of her own to sit with and be brushed. She is quiet, gets along with other cats, and for the most part, isn’t bothered by dogs if they leave her alone. She is quiet and not destructive. She can use either a regular litterbox or one of the electric ones (Cat Genie). Marge has been declawed and cannot be allowed outside.

Room Tours: Jenna’s Rental Bedroom Redo

When we moved into our rent house, the master bedroom was incredibly dark and depressing. After we painted I wanted to keep it as bright and fresh as possible. I was hoping for a completely different look than our previous bedroom, but I couldn’t justify buying all new curtain fabric and bedding.

I love the bold toiles by Manuel Canovas so I attempted a similar look with teal RIT dye using our traditional blue and white toile. I played around with scraps to find the right shade and used about 1 bottle of dye per curtain panel in the washing machine. Luckily there was enough fabric leftover to sew a bedskirt, so I was able to pull off a whole new color scheme for our bedroom for next to nothing!

This was our bedroom before we moved in. We replaced the mini-blinds with inexpensive roman shades from the hardware store and hung our own curtain rods. I couldn’t find curtain hardware I liked so I bought the ‘antique brass’ finish and spray painted the rods, clips, and rings with metallic gold Valspar. To prevent scratching, I used 2 coats of Polyurethane Gloss. So far so good!

Above the bed I hung an oil painting I found at Salvation Army a few years ago. Since there was so much color on the walls I decided on all-white bedding. I made the throw pillow out of silk ikat and the white duvet cover is an inexpensive one from Bed Bath & Beyond. I replaced the basic pillow cases with monogrammed shams from Pottery Barn and the ones behind them are from Target.

Most of our bedroom furniture was (very graciously) handed down to us but it was a mismatched mess. I wanted everything to coordinate so I painted everything myself to save money. The wicker chest (that doubles as my accessory closet) was a traditional white one that I spray painted. I replaced the wicker knobs with beaded ones from Anthropologie but eventually all the embellished parts popped off.

The gold backs stayed on the dresser and I reused the beaded pieces as lamp finials for our bedside lamps. (They remind me of the ones by Hillary Thomas Designs.)

The antique ginger jar lamps are from one of my favorite stores in San Antonio, Pagoda. The other bedside table used to be dark mahogany and I just painted around the existing handles.

Since our bathroom doesn’t have any counter space or wall outlets, I made a ‘vanity’ for myself between the windows. A mirror, desk, and chair is really all you need!

The desk came from a hotel salvage store and I repainted it to match the bedside tables. Soon after, I came across a similar desk so I added detailing with gold leaf paint. The antique chair was a hand-me-down that I also painted and recovered.

For jewelry storage I used my pineapple sconces for bangles and brooches and a few vintage bowls on my desk to hold necklaces. The pink and gold sugar dish is from a vintage serving set and it’s the perfect size for earrings.

My makeup is scattered on a tray where I can easily find it since I’m usually running out the door! I keep a notepad on my desk to jot down sewing ideas and notes.

I love this tiny milk glass lamp that was my grandparents. I keep my favorite L’Objet candle and perfume beside it.

I made the lips print on a whim while I was trying to find the perfect shade of red lipstick. It reminded me of Andy Warhol’s Lips Print so I blotted, outlined, and framed it!

Our dresser across from the bed was my first piece of furniture to paint. It was a typical French Provincial piece that was light brown with dark brass handles. Whenever they start looking dingy I take them off and glob on some Brasso to keep them shiny.

Since I’m especially prone to making piles, I like to have bowls around to conceal them. Dry cleaning tags and safety pins live in this one.

Trays are also ideal for easy cleaning and containing clutter. The one on my bedside table forces me to keep it tidy. Otherwise I’d have months of magazines piled up!!

New Bergere Chairs

Now that we’re probably moving to a bigger space this summer (I’ll share news as soon I can – don’t want to jinx it!), I’m having a hard time passing up furniture deals. How could I not get these cute little chairs last weekend? They were only $175 for the pair and are surprisingly comfortable for their petite size. Wouldn’t these be perfect bedroom chairs?

The green fabric is super old and all snagged, so the chairs need new upholstery STAT. I’m thinking I’d like to do a more neutral fabric so I can go with something fun for our windows (maybe yellow drapes like these?).

I’m not usually into using a different fabric on chair backs, but I might like it here.

The first row below shows some paint options I’m considering for the frames. Links are listed below the round up. There’s a mix of high and low fabrics here. For the pricier Kelly Wearstler fabrics, always try checking eBay or etsy for yardages before paying the huge mark up online. These fabrics also often turn up at fabric outlets and in upholsterer’s remnant bins.

Star 94 Presents Upcoming Atlanta Concerts

I’ve had the Star 94 jingle in my head for days, so that prompted me to take a look at their upcoming events. Taste of Newnan Returns for 20th Bi-Annual Event

Backpack Buddies Program Backed by Coweta-Fayette Rotary

The food collected will help economically-disadvantaged youth in Coweta County

Many more children who wouldn’t otherwise have been able to get in good meals will not go hungry thanks to the Backpack Buddies program, which covers economically disadvantaged youth in the Coweta County school system. While there are many kids who are on the “Free and Reduced” lunch program at school, this program wanted to make sure that they were fed on the weekends as well. Backpack Buddies solves that problem by providing them with nutritious and child-friendly foods that kids can open and serve themselves without the help of an adult. There are currently 115 children in 8 schools that are benefiting from the program.

In order to help Backpack Buddies out, the Coweta-Fayette Rotary has organized 3 food drives to benefit the program. Members of the Rotary recently brought more than 400 food items for the children, which were picked up from their meeting, to be used during spring break. Overall, in the history of the program, the club has gathered more than 1,500 foods for Backpack Buddies.

Latest Coweta County Schools News

John Woody is one of the finalists on flute

We already know that schools in Coweta County are highly regarded in the local area, but did you know that we’ve got 11 students recently named as finalists in the Governor’s Honors Program? Even better, 6 of them are from schools here in Newnan! Nominated students are among 700 finalists eligible to participate. The program runs for 4 weeks during the summer at Valdosta State University – an institution that will challenge some of the most promising students in Georgia in their strongest subjects.

In order to participate, students have to have been nominated by officials at their schools, with a series of interviews to follow. Here are the 6 students from Newnan schools that are among the finalists:

- Grant NeSmith (communicative arts) from The Heritage School

- Nathan Hoffman (social studies) from Northgate HS

- Rees Horton (communicative arts) from Northgate HS

- Joshua Vorderlandwehr (architectural design) from Northgate HS
