As I sat down to write, logged in and dusted off the old blog, I stumbled upon a post with this title sitting unfinished in my drafts folder. Its original intent was to be a round up fo random things I wanted to share with you, inspired by why I got started (and stuck with) blogging in the first place: a love for discovery and sharing. Yesterday I painted a wall in our entryway with a paint color with this exact name, Current Mood — besides being a color I liked, it felt fitting for a project to be tackling during this time, this current state of the world, these current mood(s) we’re all feeling each day as we try and navigate just what the fuck is happening.

While I’m not here to try and sell you any pricey loungewear to make all this extra at home time more comfy, I am here to say that it’s okay to not feel okay right now. What we’re dealing with is not normal, nor is it something that has ever happened like this before — there is no textbook here! Nobody knows how to feel!

I had really rough time settling into this; there was this energy buzzing through me, a combination of anxiety, restlessness and uncertainty. I’m someone who thrives with structure, plans and busyness, all of which came screeching to a halt when I found myself forced to work from home, in a 700 square foot apartment, with another person and a dog, and no idea what was really happening or how long things would be like this for. And that was a lot for me. And I didn’t do well processing it all that first week — I didn’t know how to feel or what to do or how to make myself feel better.

I have no big secrets or life changing advice coming out of that first week, but I can tell you that I’ve managed to feel a lot better by focusing on taking things (including my own feelings) day by day. So many “who knows?” questions remain but I’ve been working on creating my own structure where I can and creating space to seize this opportunity of extra time and space for myself, both as a chance to feel productive and a means to unwind and slow down.

When I was in the thick of a negative spiral, Josh suggested I spend some time brainstorming things I could do during this time — from projects around our apartment to ways to sit around and kill time — and as silly (or maybe neurotic) as it sounds, it’s helped. A lot. The list I’ve titled ‘things to do to avoid going insane ’ has helped me feel more normal, more grounded, more productive. It has inspired me to actually sit down and do those one day things that feel impossible when we’re dealing with the grind of everyday life, it’s made me more intentional about putting the work in to stay connected to important people in my life, it’s given me an excuse to sit down and do nothing without an ounce of guilt, and it’s created my own unique path through this, one checked off to do list item at a time in the Notes folder on my iPhone.

I sat down to write this post with one goal in mind really — to let you know that you’re okay, wherever you are, however you’re feeling. You’re okay in the moments where things feel scary and bad. You’re okay whether you’re up to date on every news headline, or have tuned things out completely. You’re okay whether you’re getting through this thing solo or hunkering down with others. We’re all okay and every day is a new opportunity to pause for a moment to acknowledge that while we’re all going through this together we’re still figuring things out as individuals, and that the impact and experience we each have remains unique. Be patient with yourself and others, and remember that the only way through this is together.

And to wrap this up and bring this thing full circle I figured I might as well share a few random things I’d recommend at the moment:

A template for your very own ‘things to do to avoid going insane’ list

Forget hand cream, this works way better — I’ve been slathering it on my hands + feet before bed!

One of us started humming this tune during our first day at home together and we’ve had the live album on repeat ever since

Highly satisfying project around the house: add more stuffing to your saggy sofa cushions

Some bodyweight exercises I’ve been doing in our front hallway (just set a timer for how long you want to work out for, and pick and choose from the list!)

Have you watched Tiger King yet?! Even better when binged after several glasses of wine

I have no idea how this stuff works but it’s magic and my hair has never been happier

Highly recommend either The Sims or Rollercoaster Tycoon as a very satisfying time suck

And a very happy story — our first Muddy Paws Rescue foster pup was just adopted by one of my followers and Hank is officially in an amazing new home in PA!

Busy? Me too. Who isn’t these days? It seems like we’re all in a constant state of running from one thing to the next while we’re on our own personal missions to have it all, do it all, and be it all. Everyone’s all about that #hustle life so it’s time to take control of our calendars and still have a little fun while we get shit done.

Life seems to have picked up speed ever since I moved to New York – blame it on the city that never sleeps nickname or maybe just the endless list of things to do, eat and see all around the city. The energy here is palpable – you can feel it the second you step outside and hit the sidewalk – and with all that go go go, I’ve somehow also managed to feel more balanced than ever before. Some little ways I’ve found helpful for saving time, staying organized and crushing my to do list:

1. Find a morning routine you love: I’m a total morning person and over the years I’ve figured out that embracing my early riser status could make my day way better. To help set the tone for my day (especially a busy one), I’ve found my groove with a morning routine that I love: waking up at 6 AM on weekdays, immediately making myself a latte and turning on some tunes, then catching up on the day’s news with NPR while I take a quick shower. The balance of doing both things I really love (coffee and music) with something I know will benefit me and my brain (listening to the news) makes me feel great and I love having a few small consistent details within my morning routine that I can stick with while traveling to help avoid feeling out of whack while I’m on the go.

2. Streamline your steps to get out the door: I’ve found that the faster I can get myself up and out the door, the better to avoid any lounging around temptations that I know I’ll regret later. Over the past few months I’ve made a big effort to overhaul my beauty routine to make myself more efficient and less reliant on a million products to get me looking and feeling good in the morning. Recently, I upgraded my razor game to a new razor, joy – the design is super sleek and simple with 5-blades and a protective lubrastrip that glides smoothly over your skin for a really smooth shave, especially when paired with their glee shave gel (the cucumber aloe smells so good!). joy comes in pink and teal with a non-slip grip that is designed for total control even when wet. joy and glee products are only available at Walmart!

Instead of stressing about the state of my legs while planning my outfit in the morning, I’ve been making shaving a regular part of my Monday morning routine so I can wear all the cropped denim and dresses I want while knowing my legs are lookin’ good.

3. Stress less about packing for trips: Everyone loves travel, yet packing always seems to stress us all out. To make it easier to travel often without adding any stress to my schedule I’ve done two things that have made a major difference: 1. I always make a packing list using a template I created in Google Docs, starting with planning outfits to keep myself from overpacking while eliminating any what am I going to wear? stress, and 2. I have all of my go to beauty products always ready to go in a travel beauty kit, which includes things like an extra joy razor, my favorite cleanser and moisturizer, and even some wrinkle release spray in case my clothes end up a little disheveled after being in a suitcase.

4. Schedule everything, especially fun: Google Calendar and TeuxDeux are basically my ride or dies. Everything that goes on in my life is accounted for in some sort of list or calendar format, but a big shift I’ve made recently is blocking out specific times for myself. Whether it’s a workout, grabbing drinks with friends or even a planned night of staying in, I’ve been keeping myself in check by looking ahead at the week and setting aside time for the things I WANT to do, not just the things I HAVE to do to keep myself from getting burnt out.

5. Don’t forget to unplug and unwind: Smartphones have made us connected 24/7 and while I don’t think I could survive without one, it’s important to remember to put the phone down and unplug, often. Try putting your phone on silent and in your bedroom for the first hour after you get home from work to savor some offline time as you transition from a busy work day into your own time and space back at home. Feel free to check in if needed later on in the night, but avoid too much screen-time before bed to set yourself up for success with a good night’s sleep.

What are some of the ways you find joy, even during your busiest days?

Callie turned ten years old a few weeks ago and I still can’t believe it – it feels like just yesterday I was innocently browsing PetFinder.com and froze upon seeing the cutest 8-week old corgi mix puppy. While I had no real plans of adopting a dog (and probably wasn’t in the best position to do so given I was about to enter my senior year of college), something in me just instantly knew there was something special about her. She’s been by my side through so much over the past ten years – from my first apartment and moves to Chicago, San Francisco and New York, to plenty of beach days and hiking adventures.

Over the past few years I’ve become more focused on Callie’s health and the preventative measures I can be taking to ensure she remains healthy and happy for as long as possible. In addition to staying up to date on her veterinary care, we’ve begun adding some supplements to her diet for her skin and joints, as well as really thinking about her diet to ensure she’s getting everything she needs from her food.

Recently we begun feeding Callie Freshpet refrigerated dog food and honestly, I’ve never seen her so excited for mealtime! It’s healthy, natural pet food made with fresh, whole ingredients like chicken and veggies so your dog’s meals are packed with protein and essential vitamins and nutrients. Since making the switch to Freshpet, Callie’s coat is shinier than ever and she has so much energy to run around and play (especially fetch – her all time favorite) – there’s nothing better than seeing her happy and she’s even learned to sit in front of the refrigerator at dinner time to ask for her Freshpet food #genius.

I had a work trip to Paris scheduled for last week and recently asked you for some of your favorite recommendations of things to do, see and eat in the city of lights, and received several messages asking me to share what was submitted. Given this week’s tragic fire at Notre Dame it was truly bittersweet that my meeting ended up being postponed and trip canceled – Paris was part of my first international trip and will always hold a very special place in my heart as it helped introduce me to the wonders of travel and the benefits of stepping outside of your comfort zone and seeing somewhere new.

Life in New York City has been so good to me. It’s crazy to think that less than a year ago I was fully settled in San Francisco, toying with the idea of moving to New York but with no concrete plans. Things can change so quickly and once the move was confirmed I only had a few weeks to find a new apartment and organize my cross country move (#chaos) but once the dust settled and the boxes were unpacked, New York immediately felt like home and I couldn’t be happier.

But let’s rewind for a second and talk moving. As someone who is a serial mover (this is my 9th apartment in less than 9 years with 3 cross country moves in the mix!), I’ve got the logistics of moving down to a science. I’m all about the pre-move purge, I can pack up a full apartment in a weekend, and know that every moving crew appreciates a cold beer, especially after lugging all of my belongings up multiple flights of stairs. But the part that still always manages to stress me out? Finding a new apartment.

I’m a bit of a homebody so my space matters really matters to me. I love nothing more than the fresh start of having a new apartment to decorate and can immediately tell when an apartment is the one when I can visualize an exact furniture layout and picture myself spending a lazy Sunday morning in the space. My search criteria is usually pretty simple: great natural light, decent closet space, dog friendly, with bonus points for having a dishwasher and washer/dryer in-unit, but I tend to go for spaces with some character to ’em, which can be much harder to find. Luckily one of my favorite hobbies is browsing rentals online, and Zumper has become my new BFF as I start planning my next move in New York and thinking about trading my West Village apartment for more space across the river in Brooklyn.

Zumper makes it really easy to find an apartment, with the ability to apply your standard filters (location, price, number of bedrooms) PLUS layer on amenities filters, like washer/dryer or outdoor space, so you’re able to save time combing through a million listings that aren’t quite right.
I still have to pinch myself sometimes that my very first New York apartment has truly everything I was looking for – from being in my favorite neighborhood, the West Village, to having pre-war charm and exposed brick – it’s truly been a dream living here since July. Before moving from San Francisco I sold the majority of my furniture and did a major purge of my belongings and it’s been really fun to start fresh and design this space to be a true reflection of this chapter of my life.

My living room is my favorite space in the apartment thanks to amazing natural light, the fireplace and exposed brick. It’s where I spend the majority of my time, either relaxing on my own or entertaining friends – I’ve never hosted more often than in this space, the apartment’s central location makes it the perfect gathering spot for impromptu stop by’s when a friend happens to be walking through the neighborhood, or getting everyone together for drinks before a night out. I love how perfectly the bookshelves work on either side of the fireplace to add some much needed storage space for my book collection and random other small treasures I’ve collected over the years, and how the arched mirror makes the room feel bigger and even brighter on a sunny day.

Moving into this apartment I knew the bedroom was going to be a bit of a design challenge due to it’s limited square footage and natural light thanks to an interior-facing window, so I decided to embrace it and paint the walls a dark navy/grey to accentuate the high ceilings and beautiful vintage moulding. The dramatic dark paint instantly made the space feel more intentionally cozy, and I brightened things up with light colored fabric on the headboard and a small gallery wall of favorite art pieces in bright white frames. I love crawling into bed every night – it feels like my own little oasis within the massiveness that is Manhattan, and it’s so dark and quiet with the door shut, aka best sleeping conditions around!

The entire apartment packs a lot of personality into a small space tucked within one of the best neighborhoods in Manhattan. It’s been so much fun to have incredible bars and restaurants within walking distance, as well as be close to the Hudson River for evening runs or trips to the dog park with Callie. While my days in Manhattan are likely numbered (Brooklyn, here I come!), this apartment will always be a very special place for me, reflective of an exciting move back to the east coast and the pinch me moment of coming home to my very own charming West Village apartment every day.

Anyone else thinking about moving soon?

Turning 31 this year felt more significant to me than the previous year’s milestone. It was the shift from the novelty of a new decade to really being in it with my thirties which I could not be more excited about. While we often hear about plenty of complaints about turning 30 or getting another year older, I’m a big believer that it truly only gets better as you age so I started jotting down a running list of reasons your 30’s are better than your 20’s and took to Instagram to hear from you guys as well and you DELIVERED (seriously I don’t think I have ever gotten so many replies to a question!).

So without further ado, let’s take a moment to give it up for your 30’s:

You’re established in your career and out of the grind and stress of the early years

Mo’ money less problems

You’re more secure in who you are, what you want, and what you don’t need to deal with

Less likely to have to deal with roommates (unless that’s your thing)

Greater appreciation for the feeling of having no plans

You’ve made a lot of dumb mistakes already and have learned some lessons along the way

More comfortable asking for what you want, less likely to expect anyone to just hand it to you

Saying no thank you, with no guilt about it

Giving zero fucks

Being able and open to say yes to more spontaneous experiences

Recognizing the value of travel and experiences over material possessions

You’ve escaped the comparison trap and have recognized that we’re all on our own paths

Faster to forgive yourself and move forward

Value of sleep, especially on good quality sheets

Hold both others and yourself to higher, yet more realistic standards

More forgiving with your body, at this point you know what to expect, what to work on and what’s basically impossible

You’ve identified your danger drinks and are smart enough to avoid them at all costs

A little convenience can go a long way, and you recognize the value of your time and/or energy

You probably have a go to karaoke song (or have a firm stance on never ever doing karaoke)

The dynamic with your parents has changed and you’ve realized they’re normal people too, and they’re actually pretty cool sometimes

You know who your real deal friends are, what kind of work is needed to put into them to maintain them

Finding your signature style and building out a wardrobe you love (and lasts)

The confidence and new perspective that comes with age and experience

Feeling 0% guilty about staying in on a Friday and/or Saturday night

You’re now wise enough to throw timelines out the window and ditch the social pressures surrounding when you’re “supposed to” do things.

Recognizing that most of what’s shared by others is just a highlight reel and not at all representative of the reality behind the scenes

“Busy” isn’t a status symbol. It’s an excuse.

The power of a leap of faith and the incredible things that can happen when you step into the unknown

Gotten serious about your skincare routine and the importance of SPF every damn day

You’ve put your fair share of effort, stress, confusion and uncertainty in to establish yourself as you and now you’re free to channel that energy in other directions

Bring it on, 30’s!

While I haven’t actually read Marie Kondo’s book or watched a single episode of her Netflix series, I’ve done some serious purging over the past year with a cross-country move and settling into an apartment with petite storage space (to put it nicely). So basically, if it’s not sparking joy, there’s no room for it in my life.

This has majorly come into play with my wardrobe – I’ve felt all around much more inspired on the fashion front since moving to New York, but also realized the beauty of simplicity and routine when it comes to looking and feeling good. I dabbled with Rent The Runway Unlimted for a few months and had a lot of fun playing dress up but ultimately paused my account for a bit to see if I could instead focus on adding a few wardrobe of workhorses to my closet that I enjoy wearing and can get a lot of wear out of.

So alas, here are 11 things I wear all the damn time and best of all… are currently on sale during Shopbop’s Buy More, Save More sale.

If you’ve never shopped at Shopbop before, they’ve really become my go to thanks to a well curated, but not overwhelming selection that mixes more affordable brands like Madewell and BB Dakota with higher end investment brands, super fast free shipping (they’re owned by Amazon!) and easy returns, plus the ability to save items to your own favorites list to keep tabs on what you love most on their site. Their Buy More, Save More sale is an awesome time to stock up on pieces you know you’re going to get a ton of wear out of, as it’s one of the rare chances to grab designer stuff at a great discount. The sale starts at 15% off everything, going up to 25% off orders over $800 AND can be used on sale items too!

Stuart Weitzman Lowland Boots: Yes, these boots are fucking expensive. I’ll admit that they’re the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought as far as shoes/clothing/bags go but I wear them all the time and love them every. single. time. I put them on. I have them in black and wear them a ton with dresses and can even get away with winter bare legs because they’re really thic
k/warm.

Madewell Everything: There is no exaggeration when I say that at least 50% of my wardrobe is from Madewell. Unlike their sister J. Crew, Madewell rarely has decent sales so I always grab a new pair of denim or outerwear whenever a sale opportunity arises. Their leather moto jacket has been one of my most worn items EVER and is a great mid-weight buttery leather that you can wear year round.

Cocobelle Leather Sandals: Simple, well-made leather sandals are something you’ll be able to get several years worth of wear out of and I just recently discovered Cocobelle and they became instant favorites. I have this pair and have been able to pack them as my only pair of sandals for vacations, wearing them with everything from my swimsuit coverup for beach days, to dresses for dinner at a nice restaurant.

AGOLDE Denim Shorts: I’ve never been a big fan of shorts (who really is?) and have always struggled to find a pair of denim shorts that was a reasonable length plus wasn’t skin tight on my thighs and butt, and ordered these shorts while getting ready for some warm weather travels, and they’re as perfect as can be. They fit really well and are somehow able to be both trendy and age appropriate and I already am planning on buying another pair of two to finally end my shorts search.

Le Specs & Ray-Ban Sunglasses: After years of resisting I finally gave into buying “nice” sunglasses instead of the $10 cheapies I was grabbing in mass quantities and always bending/snapping the arms off of. Le Specs is a favorite for more affordable plastic frames that aren’t embarrassingly large (I have the Bandwagon and No Smirking silhouettes) while the Ray-Ban aviator is such a classic that you’ll want to wear forever.

Nudwear Pasties: Immediately upon arriving in New York last summer I declared that I wanted to not wear a bra as often as possible, which was all well and good until I first sweat off a pasty during a night out (embarrassing). I ordered a new pair, claiming to be “waterproof” and damn, they did the trick – they’re super sticky and stay on, plus come in a great zip case for traveling.

Hat Attack Cashmere Beanie: I went a bit psycho preparing for my first winter since living in California and ordered about a million beanies online to try and find one that looked decent on me (I’m not a hat person) and this one did the trick. It has just the right amount of slouch to look cool, but not enough to look sloppy or hipstery, plus it’s very cozy and warm.

Levis Wedgie Jeans: While I’m mostly fiercely loyal to my Madewell denim, these jeans never fail to make me look cool, and get me about a million compliments. They don’t have any stretch to ’em, so I’d recommend sizing up, and you can just use scissors to trim the hem to get your perfect length.

Loeffler Randall Isla Booties: These are previously the most expensive shoes I’ve ever own, until they lost their title to the Lowland boots. They’re comfortable as far as heels go, and have a unique silhouette with the pointed toe and angular, blocky heel. I wear them pretty much all year round, paired with cropped denim or dresses, either with bare legs or tights, and they’ve held up great.

Dainty Everyday Gold Jewelry: I’m not very exciting when it comes to jewelry but wear my rotation of dainty gold pieces all day, every day (even in the shower or during workouts). Zoe Chicco, Adina Reyter and Chan Luu are some favorites for delicate rings and necklaces that you’ll never take off.

Eberjey Pajamas & Robe: You know you’re getting old when you take the time, effort and money to upgrade your loungewear wardrobe. Eberjey has the softest, most comfortable pajama sets and robes, which also make great gifts because everybody loves a fancy pair of pajamas!

Happy shopping!

It’s been awhile around here. At the beginning of the year I swapped my Instagram handle and shook off the “influencer” title I’ve carried for nearly eight years. While at surface level this was a rather insignificant change, it’s one that’s made a tremendous difference in my day to day life and honestly, it’s felt great.

Lately I’ve been making an effort to be more present – to slow down, to relax and to reconnect. I’ve been catching up with old friends, making new travel plans and choosing to pick up a book instead of aimlessly scrolling through Instagram – after the go go go pace I’d gotten so used to, I’ve been learning how to have more choice in my actions beyond the obligation of a to do list and an always present feeling of never having enough time each day.

Taking the pressure off of writing and creating content has been rather restorative for me – while I’ve always loved writing, it became disheartening to have it feel like a chore, and I decided to experiment with a simple rule: I’d only write if I wanted to. And I haven’t wanted to (no offense).

There have been several blog posts I’ve began writing in my head – from an Australia travel guide, to wanting to rave about how much I love my air purifier – but when I’ve gone to actually sit down at my laptop and make it happen, it was no longer appealing. Yet here we are and I’m on an early morning flight to Mexico, writing this post in the Notes app on my phone and the words are flowing just like they used to.

So what’s new around here?

With all of my newly found chill time, I’ve been reading a ton and just finished The Great Alone, Rabbit, Bitter Orange, There There, All These Beautiful Strangers, If You See Me Don’t Say Hi and Small Fry. If you’ve read anything recently you’ve really loved, or have some all-time favorites, I’d love to hear about ’em!

I turned 31 a little over a week ago. While 30 didn’t feel like much of a big deal, turning 31 really feels like I’m in it with my thirties with the novelty factor gone, but I love it. I asked my fellow thirty-somethings on Instagram last week to weigh in on why your thirties are better than your twenties and got SO MANY amazing responses, stay tuned for more there in a coming post. Every year has just gotten better and better and I have a really good feeling about this one.

Callie had a bit of a health scare that freaked me out (I probably cried more in that two week span than I have in the past two years) but she’s now almost fully healed from her two surgeries (6 teeth + a tumor removed!) and back to her usual self with great follow up test results.

I’m about ten years too late here but I signed up for Classpass and have been using it to mix up my workout routine and get myself off the plateau I was feeling from just doing Soulcycle for awhile. It’s been a lot of fun to try new workouts with friends, and feels good to feel sore again and work out areas that need a little extra attention.

Travel has remained a top priority for me in 2019 and have been to Charleston, Florida, Lake Tahoe and Sayulita so far this year, with trips to Ecuador and Spain on the horizon. Scheming up a few more trips for this year (including at least one solo trip) and I’m excited to continue to explore new places and see where the year takes me.

I’ve been in New York for nearly 8 months now which has flown by but also been really incredible for me both personally and professionally. Very grateful that the move happened when it did and love being in a bigger city than San Francisco (but happy that I get to go back often for work!) and am really feeling like I’ve found my groove here.

On the blogging front I’m continuing with the write when you want to mentality and am starting to feel the itch creep back in, so expect a few more updates around here than you’ve seen in recent months. Thanks always for sticking with me, xx.

The holiday season is finally here and I could not be more excited! Inspired by Cait’s recent post, I made a list of everyone on my gifting list in an effort to get organized before I started shopping. As always, I’m trying to keep things budget-friendly, so I have my eye on this book for my dad, a perfume discovery set for my mom, the cookbook of the season for a family gift exchange, and these super cozy scarves for my girlfriends. I love giving a few small gifts to each person on my list and had so much fun rounding up some ideas for just about any price point or recipient. What gift are you most excited to give this year?
