I had put pockets in but decided to take them out when the skirt hung a bit awkwardly. I used a length of vintage polished cotton that I had pre-washed but I thought it was still a little too stiff to keep the pockets in - next time I’ll use a softer fabric that drapes a bit better and add pockets into that one.</span></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br /></span></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">I’ve been back at work for the last two weeks now and unfortunately my sewing machine has languished (along with a muslin of the top of a dress I’ve been meaning to make since late last year). I've not had a chance to show you. </span><br style="font-family:arial;"><br style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">This weekend I'm off back home to NZ for a friends wedding in Christchurch. It will be a strange thing to go back after the major earthquakes that have been hitting the city since 2010. We were there briefly for our honeymoon in 2010 after the first major quake and at that stage it seemed like every second house was missing a chimney, had a crack up the wall and was covered in tarpoulin and scaffolding. Since then they have had several more major earthquakes including the one that destroyed the cathedral and many buildings in the CBD causing it to be shut off (it's still shut off now) and where lives were lost. It was nice to spend some lazy days doing everything slowly - gently ironing out my vintage patterns, carefully tracing them and making adjustments as I went, washing and hanging fabric out to dry, cutting and sewing slowly and knowing there is absolutely no reason to rush and that I could take my time.</span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;font-size:85%;" >I've also enjoyed talking to people I haven't for a while, volunteering at the dog rescue and taking wee pups out for walks, having friends over for new years eve and eating too much (and maybe drinking too much) and talking and laughing and watching the fireworks off the Sydney harbour bridge.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Next week I plan on putting the finishing touches on something I've been working on for over a year and then I'll tell you all about it. I eventually got round to buying some navy blue dye because I really wanted to wear it. I didn't leave the dress in the dye bath for too long though because I was worred about the flowers dyeing out, but it turned out a beautiful blue-grey colour and the flowers look perfectly pretty I didn't really convey how much of a culture shock it was when we got out of the airport though. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">David and I landed in Vancouver later on Saturday night and had booked a night in a hotel before we jumped on the ferry over to Victoria (and boy oh boy was a shower and a comfy bed welcome!).</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">We spent a week on the island and while David had a conference to attend during the week, I was free to amuse myself as I saw fit. And I must say, I really really loved the time we spent in Victoria. It was such a pretty little place and I would love to go back there and explore up the coast line. As it was we spent the bulk of our time in Downtown where we were staying, except when we spent a Sunday afternoon exploring the Butchardt Gardens (which I've decided needs it's own post). I've found it a bit hard to get back into the swing of things after a three week break, and catching up on three weeks of work at the job that pays me has been a bit exhausting, especially considering I'm still relatively new (my inbox was a little bit scary!! But I have tamed the beast thank goodness!). I was also dreading editing photos just a little too...</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Now, I know how boring other people's holiday snaps can be so I'll try to keep it short, I'm also going to break the trip up into three bits - Beijing, Victoria and Vancouver to try and not lose too many of you to 'boring holiday snap-itis'.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">David and I had a rather large stop over in Beijing on our way to Vancouver, we got in around 7.30am and our flight wouldn't leave until 11.30pm that night so we decided to get out of the airport and explore. We had the foresight to book a private tour to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutianyu">Mutianyu section</a> of the Great Wall which was such a beautiful area. It is high in the hills away from the smog and traffic of the city and surrounded by chestnut trees (if you go there, make sure you toboggan back down the hill). I ended up taking off the little cap sleeves and added pleats to the skirt. I do have plans to make a bow belt to match the dress but that will have to wait.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Overall, I liked the pattern though wouldn't recommend it for a novice sewer - the instructions are a bit vague. Though that makes it a fantastic pattern for the moderate sewer who is looking to start modifying patterns by themselves.<br /><br />It's a great basic dress that really does have endless variations and can be made for winter or summer depending on the fabric you use.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">It has a lovely vintage silhoette for those looking for that style, but as a warning (and one that I have to thank those who left comments mentioning it) the neckline is V-E-R-Y low. But ever since I got around to doing them, it has been in constant roation - at the moment I love pairing it with with the belt I'm wearing, black tights and a dark grey cardigan. I love the contrast of the sweet springy floral print of the dress with the dark wintery black of the other items - it fits perfectly with the wintery cold mornings. And I have no photos either (but on a side note: my gorgeous new camera lens arrived on Monday and I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces in Vancouver and at the Great Wall in China. Oh, did I not mention I was visiting the Great Wall on the way to Vancouver? Well, more news on that exciting development soon!! But, I digress...).<br /><br />This week we were supposed to be talking about fitting the dress and I am so thankful I took heed of everyones advice, (including the girls doing the challenge) to make sure the neckline wasn't too plunging. I've also taken off the slight cap sleeve on the dress and made it a straight strap across the shoulder instead. And, Casey has a tutorial up on making a<a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2011/05/blueberry-fields-dress/"> piped neckline</a> and I'll admit, I'm tempted. Well, this was also supposed to be a post about inspiration for the dress, but as I'm on a budget, my inspiration is coming from the depths of my fabric stash and the fact that it's certainly cooling down around here! Is it just me or would you agree that I seem to be having bad luck with my sewing machines...? This means I won't have it back for a week and won't be able to put up a post on wednesday with any actual 'sewing'.
