2017 Quilts

This blog is collecting dust (like many blogs in the days of Instagram and Facebook). I find that I'm missing having my crafty pictures all in one place, though. Here are some of my quilt finishes from 2017:

Insane Christmas Forest:

I loved this one in Cotton + Steel. It's so loud and fun. I'm sad to put it away but it will be great to pull out for Christmas 2018!

Sea Star:

I made this simple quilt with some hoarded Tula Pink fabric for a dear friend. I hope it's well-loved!

Cartwheels:

I put this one of for auction at our school fundraiser. It was so hard to let this one go! The paper piecing took a lot of time but was worth it in the end!

Hipster Fox:

I mean, look at those curled-up foxes in the quilting! This is the Fancy Fox pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. I sent this off a friend from high school for her first baby. I love the glasses!

Finished Drunkard's Medallion and a Giveaway Winner

Thank you to everyone who entered the Gypsy Wife giveaway. The winner is Christina who blogs at WIPS and TUTS. Christina, I will get in touch with you about your prizes!

My Drunkard's Medallion is finished and I. Am. In. Love.

It's the perfect size (about 62" square), scrappy but cohesive, and reminds me of some really fun ladies who helped it come together! What could be better?

In new project news, I'm knitting (I know… I haven't blogged about knitting in a while) and should have a few WIP pictures up soon!

Gypsy Wife QAL - June Giveaway!

Welcome! Who is ready for a Gypsy Wife QAL giveaway?

I'm participating in this quiltalong with The Intrepid Thread's Calm colorway. This month's main block is Crazy Anne:

My Crazy Anne isn't quite as crazy as it was supposed to be. This quilt is already wild enough for me so I kept the components that make it up all the same.

It's no secret that this pattern has been troubling for many of us. I will save the griping for another post and just be grateful that this block came together at the correct size and with minimal seam ripping!

I think it fits in well with my other blocks. What do you think?

And now for the giveaway! This month the winner will receive three books: The Modern Applique Workbook, A Quilters Mixology, and Quilt Color Workshop!

So, link up and show us those Gypsy Wife blocks! I need some more motivation to keep plugging away on these! Entry will close at 11pm on June 30 and I'll choose the winner randomly.

So Many Babies

Yes. I'm experiencing another wave of babies in my life. Not me, of course. ;) First up is a baby due in just a couple of weeks for a coworker of mine. I used a single Swoon block to make a 40" baby quilt.

These colors will do very well in her nursery.

I also have a brand new niece, Sadie. I went out to meet her when she was five days old and oh. my. goodness. What is it about holding a brand new baby?

This Briar Rose quilt is actually perfectly rectangular but Mr. Starfish is pulling at the top a bit. Love those strawberries.

I have a little knitted sweater started for Sadie too. Might need to get some pictures of that up.

Quilting for a Cause!

Check out my latest quilt finish "Downtown":

I made this as a piece to be auctioned at my school's annual event to raise money for our artist in residence program. It's called Community Creates. I was paired with a community leader from whom I could get some inspiration and a few blocks were generously given by three guild-mates to help me stick to the "community" theme.

The quilt is 60" square which I find to be the perfect throw size. I am proud to say it raised $525 last night!

Worth the Wait!

Long time readers of this blog may remember that about a year ago, I started in a traveling quilt project called Drunkard's Medallion. You can read about it HERE. Well, my little top has made the rounds across international waters and back home to me. And. It. Is. Amazing.

The ladies in this group went above and beyond to keep to my vague theme and wishes while still making their borders their own. I am in love with it. I added the last little border myself so it would come full circle and I can't wait for quilting and binding.

Not everyone in this little group is a blogger but they are all on Instagram at @instaamy, @stitchingandbacon, @lovebyhand, @sewlux, @susannahkate_sews, and @robynie and you should definitely look them all up! I'm on Instagram too at @paperstarfish. I can't thank these ladies enough for being such a fun and talented group!

Penny Sampler Finished

This was such a stretch yourself/be open to new ideas process for me.

I go back and forth between being head over heels in love with it and just sort of being proud of myself for being adventurous. I do love the Nordika fabrics that I used throughout.

Here are a few of my favorite parts. The dala horse (where I finally felt like I knew what I was doing with paper piecing):

The spruce forest:

I'm linking this up to Show and Tell Tuesday!

After a surprise 6 day stretch of no school/work, it's back to our regular schedule tomorrow! The snow is almost gone and we're supposed to be into the 60s this week. What?!?!

This is the upper right corner of my Penny Sampler. My first work with sketch applique. It's not my favorite look but was a good thing to try and is featured more than once in the Penny Sampler.

A lot of good snow here over the last few days so we're getting a surprise snowcation from school. Wake Forest University even closed for two days which never happens!

Back In Time

We got 2" of snow last week and were out of school for 3 and a half days. The boys went out to play that first morning and I snapped some pictures. Check this out:

On the left is Bigger Kid Starfish in 2009. On the right is Littler Kid Starfish last week. My husband remembered the older picture and the similarities. Same hat, position, style of shoes! Almost the exact same ages!

I'm still working on binding my Penny Sampler but that didn't stop me from picking another big project to begin. This is happening:

I'm going to work on Gypsy Wife throughout 2014. There are at least two QALs happening for this pattern right now. It's a riot of color and once again, juuuust outside my comfort zone.

I'm using fabrics pulled by The Intrepid Thread.

I can't wait to post my progress of this as we go along!

Prism Quilt

I finished and gifted my altered version of the Prism Quilt by Fresh Lemons Quilts.

I am certainly getting the hang of paper piecing. I altered the pattern to include lots of negative space that shows off the quilting.

It measures 53"x63" and is a great size for throwing over yourself on the couch. I gifted it to my principal as an internship thank you and she loved it. I love the back as much as the front.

Pasta and Quilting

Two good things.

I tried a new recipe that Mr. Starfish and I really loved. 30 Minute Caramelized Shallot, Spinach and Goat Cheese Garlic Butter Pasta:

Easy to follow recipe and yummy, yummy results. I used slightly less goat cheese and didn't miss the rest at all. You can find the recipe HERE.

I'm attaching the binding to this quilt:

It's a present for my principal who was so fantastic while I was interning under her. I hope to give it to her on Tuesday when I head back to work.

I'm on the hunt for some Malabrigo Rasta to make these MITTENS. What are you working on?

Updates on everything!

Whew. No blogging. Let's talk about that. I have been crafting. Quilting. Baking. Knitting. We've had fun stuff going on. Christmas. Trips to museums. Vacations. Why no blogging?

I think partly I'm relying on Instagram. I really love the format of quick and easy and many of my crafty friends and using it a lot, too. On the downside....You can't explain your photo as much and the photos are small. I definitely get more feedback on Instagram than I get here.

So, I'm going to try something new. I'm going to set a short-term goal to post here once a week. Maybe a routine and habit will keep me posting here (which I enjoy when I do it) more often. I am also cutting back on the time I spend on Facebook. It has become a time filler for no real reason. I considered getting rid of my account but that seems kind of extreme especially since a lot of my college friends keep up with each other that way.

On to crafty-ness: My Penny Sampler is quilted and ready for binding! Here is a sneak peek before quilting:

This quilt is very busy and crazy and I love it. It is such a departure from my usual style. I really got the hang of paper piecing through this class - check out that dala horse! I love the Scandinavian motifs and the cheerful colors and that little village. I hope to bind it this week.

I also finished a Taffy Quilt top.

I have eyed this pattern since I saw a shop sample many months ago. Then I saw a few made by Lee and I was smitten. I wanted the circular pattern to pop in mine so I chose my fabrics carefully. I think it works. I will post a picture of the whole things once it's quilted and bound.

Okay, if you're still here thank you! I will plan to post again on Sunday and plan to have at least one finished quilt by then!

Penny Sampler

I really enjoy Rachel's work over at Stitched in Color. The Color Wheel quilt that I made was from one of Rachel's pattern. Oh boy. I fell in love with her Penny Sampler and had to dive in! It is so different from my usual style but I am really smitten with it. I joined the party late so I'm in catch-up mode but I've already gotten several blocks finished:

I'm using the Nordika stack that I showed a few posts ago. Stay tuned!

Just Keep Swimming!

We've been watching a lot of Finding Nemo at Casa Starfish lately. I think it helped inspire this baby quilt for a sweet little guy born one month ago.

I cut into my Heather Ross for this quilt that measures about 39" square.

There is a lot of great texture in this one and the back is a simple navy chevron.

The baby (Grayson) is the first baby for Kid Starfish's 1st grade teacher. We went over to see him yesterday and delivered the quilt then. What is it about holding those brand new babies? So sweet.

Rib-A-Roni Hat

I love fall weather. This is not fall weather. I knit a hat for Kid Starfsh and made him model it in very warm temperatures:

This was an easy and well-written pattern called Rib-A-Roni. The red is Malabrigo in Ravelry Red and the blue is Dream in Color Classy. I used leftovers from my stash and barely had enough red to finish!

The color is off in this next and last photo but look at my sweet guy. He is getting so old!
