So, I was wondering, who is on your Twitter White List?

All you have to is click through and leave a comment. And you will be able to give people the recognition they deserve for all the hard work they pour into their Twitter feed that you read every day.

Tweak one string, the left leg moves. Tweak another, the right leg. Use them together and you can make that puppet walk across your desk.

It’s that easy.

Now, what I’m about to tell you may strike you as strange but please keep an open mind.

Many people online are no different than puppets when it comes to their online behavior. All you have to do is know how to tweak the right string, in the right way, and you can influence people to do anything.

Introducing Social Triggers

What are Social Triggers? The short answer is, they are the invisible forces that influence people online.

And it’s also the title of my new blog where I’m going to show you how to use these invisible forces to get traffic and sell stuff.

In 2003, I dressed up as an AIM Buddy List for a college Halloween party. I dangled a piece of blank cardboard from my neck that said “I have no friends.”

When I walked into the party, people actually LINED UP to sign it. I didn’t know half of them, but they all wanted their name on my piece of cardboard.

What was going on? Why did people care so much about my Halloween costume? I had no idea. So I did something similar the following year.

In 2004, I dressed up as a Myspace Page and asked people if they would be in”My Top 8,” an area on Myspace where you highlight your top friends. All they had to do was allow me to take a quick Polaroid picture and let me post it on my piece of cardboard.

It was then that I realized I had stumbled into a gold mine. Just like the year before, people practically LINED UP to get their picture taken for “My Top 8.” I discovered the secret to getting attention on Halloween, and after much thought…

…I realized this “Halloween Costume Strategy” will work online too. All you have to do is grab attention and then ask for a specific action.

While this advice isn’t new or unique, I still see people who forget to incorporate these two important factors into their marketing strategy.

So let’s start a discussion. How do you grab attention? And when you have it, what do you ask people to do?

Your tweets are the only way for you to make an impression on your Twitter followers. With only 140 characters to make that impression, it may seem impossible.

However, crafting tweets that encourage people to visit your website is easy. And, I will provide you with sure-fire Twitter headline templates that help you do it.

How a 70 Year-Old Headline Template Helped Me Attract Around 30,000 Visits to My Website

You, my loyal readers, know “How I Went Viral On Twitter.” I used copywriting to create a high-impact Twitter headline and I was successful.

What I didn’t tell you was that I borrowed the headline from Dale Carnegie’s 70 year-old book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”

I knew that most people on Twitter — including me — want more followers. And I knew his headline would address this desire perfectly.

Here is the headline I ended up using: “How to Attract and Influence People on Twitter.” It is a carbon copy of Carnegie’s headline, but this is how the best magazine editors and direct marketers do it. They take a proven headline template and reuse it for additional success.

You’re about to learn the tactics I used to write a blog post that went viral on Twitter.

And, this was a VIRAL blog post. It was sent to around 300,000 Twitter Feeds.

Want to know the best part? This all happened when I had less than 300 followers on Twitter — my profile clearly didn’t do the work.

First, let me set the record straight. Of those 300,000 Twitter Feeds, only ~ 30,000 people clicked over to my website. But, who would turn down 30,000 unique visits?

Now, here’s how I did it.

1. Talk About Twitter

Did you know that more than 40% of the most retweeted URLs are about Twitter? Just head over to Retweetist and take a look at the top 100 retweeted links.

This won’t change in the near-term because Tweeters are vain (and who could blame us? this service rocks!). And, in the long-term, it won’t change either. Just take a look at Digg. The Digg community still loves articles about Digg. Fark? They love Fark.

Tip 1: So if you want to go viral on Twitter, write about Twitter. That’s what I did and it worked.

WARNING: You need great content. Learn more about this in Tip 5.

2. Promote Other Services

When your article starts to see some traffic, make sure you slap a Delicious or Digg button on the page.

Most people have been using the “Tweet This” button, but I’m not sold on its’ usefulness. Tweets are great, but I prefer links. And, when you hit the Digg or Delicious home page, you get links AND traffic for a lifetime.

For example, when my article started receiving some traffic from Twitter, I used a Delicious button — I got to the homepage within a few hours. This resulted in more tweets, 10-20 links, and thousands of visitors.

Tip 2: Don’t limit your options to just Twitter. Pick one other service to promote heavily. If you land on the Delicious home page, don’t be afraid to switch it up to Digg… This is how you leverage success.

3. Use Copywriting Templates

There is a reason why expert Copywriters make a ton of money. Their tactics persuade people. And, these same tactics work on Tweeple.

Copywriters pack a lot of punch in their short headlines. This premium on concise writing is perfect for Twitter because we only have 140 characters. So, when you title your articles, you should use the sure-fire copywriting templates that work. Here are three examples:

How to [Blank] on Twitter

[3, 5, 7, or 10] Ways Twitter Helps [Blank]

Little Known Ways to [Blank] on Twitter

If you want more examples, look at Brian Clark’s Magnetic Headlines series and add “on Twitter” to any of the templates.

Tip 3: Copywriters know how to make people act. Study and use their tactics.

4. Ask for Tweets

I started my snowball by asking people to Tweet my article — and they did. But, please don’t mistaken that for spam everyone. I asked people I had rapport with and they were happy to help.

Or, you could try another method for asking for tweets…

You could include (pls ReTweet) in your Twitter Headline. This call to action lets your opt-in followers know that you would like them to retweet your article (you may think this sounds like begging, but it is no different from a “Tweet This” button).

Tip 4: Twitter is a great community. They won’t mind helping you out if you ask.

5. Create Comprehensive Content

You have heard this before. But, when you’re writing for Twitter, the rules change. If you want people to Tweet your article, you need to create a complete resource — something people NEED to Tweet.

In my Twitter Tips article, I created a comprehensive list of resources that help people improve their Twitter game. And, please note how I divided the entire post into small sections (chapters).

Since comprehensive resources require time, sections allow your reader to divide that time up how they see fit. And, take a guess how they get back to the article? They favorite it for later reference.

Unfortunately, some people can’t create comprehensive resources. So, here are some other examples of content that works on Twitter:

Be Contrary - It’s easy to say what other people say, but as the saying goes… “only a dead fish swims with the stream all the time.” So, if you want to be comprehensive, ensure that you say something different.

Break News - This is a no-brainer. If you break news, your article will get credit for it. I won’t go into much detail here because this is not within all of our capabilities.

Borrow Influence - You may remember my Gary Vaynerchuk articles. They borrowed influence from Gary Vaynerchuk and since it was good content, people tweeted it (including Gary Himself).

Tip 5: Pick one of the above types of content and create it.

Is This The Real Deal?

That is the first question I would ask too.

But, I’m certain these tactics work because they worked for my good friend Gyutae Park of Winning the Web.

And, he just wrote a similar article where he talks about how he received 35,967 hits to his website in 14 days

I Challenge You…

…to use these five tips on your next blog post. Remember, this is exactly what I did and I received more than 30,000 unique visitors.

Want More Viral Twitter Tips?

If you found this article useful, I suggest you get these articles delivered straight to your email inbox. This will ensure that you don’t miss any great tips and tactics.

Please take a minute and imagine that everyone you spoke to remembered what your story.

If a new job opened up, you would be at top of mind. Or, if someone was looking for a business partner or a buyout, your company would be remembered.

Well, most people struggle with creating this magical, memorable idea,… but it isn’t their fault…

It’s a bandwidth problem. We are bombarded with marketing and information from the internet, the telephone, and every other form of media.

Yet, there are still messages and ideas that people remember and share. For example, what image pops into your mind when I say “this is your brain on drugs?” An egg in a frying pan. Or, what about “Where’s the Beef?” Wendy’s.

But what is their secret?

Don’t Make People Stutter

Take a second and say both of those messages aloud. “This is your brain on drugs,” and “Where’s the beef.” You may notice that it’s very easy to say – extremely easy in fact. You don’t have to think about pronunciation or anything like that. The words are familiar and easy to understand. The chances of you stuttering are almost zilch.

And, this brings me to my first rule. Whether you are writing for the written word or the spoken word, you need to ensure that people can say what you write because if they can’t say it, they won’t remember it and more importantly, they won’t say it.

Invade Your Audience’s Mind

“Where’s the Beef” and “This is Your Brain on Drugs” really gets people thinking. If they’re fast food eaters, they want to know why they’ve been cheated out of beef on their burger, whereas if they’re drug users, they want to know if their brain looks like the messed up egg. And, if you’re not in their target audience, these expressions still get you to think about the size of a burger and the look of a brain. It is almost like an invasion…

This leads me to my next rule. You need to invade your audience’s mind with your message and you do this by making it easy for them to picture. Just take a look at the opening sentence of this blog post… I invaded your mind and got you thinking about crafting successful messages.

Give People What They Want

If you’re hungry and in the mood for a burger, would you go to the fast food resturaunt with or without the beef? With ofcourse. Or, if you’re thinking about trying drugs as a teen, do you want a scrambled brain or a regular brain? A regular brain ofcourse. These two messages appeal to your audiences self interest and they remember it because knowing where the beef is can be extremely important when you’re hungry.

And this leads me to my final rule. Give people what they want. I know this sounds like common sense, but people and companies fail to do this regularly. They talk about their product features and their longevity, but at the end of the day, no one cares. As Seth Godin would say, the only radio station people listen to is WII-FM (What’s In It For Me).

What Do You Think?

Do you think there are any other rules of messages that people remember and share? Let’s have a conversation about it in the comments.

The problem is that people know what to do, but they don’t know how to do it. They don’t know how to create a message that people remember and share. Or, even worse, they don’t know how to create a message worth talking about.

These are messages that work and Prevential.com will talk about how to create messages just like that.

You may find this topic similar to “Made to Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath and it is, but their book was published in 2007. That might as well have been a life-time ago. Hell, Twitter wasn’t even popular 1 year ago and look at it now…
