Reino Unido presenta mapa con los efectos del calentamiento global en el planeta

El Gobierno británico ha presentado un mapa que ilustra las consecuencias que el cambio climático tendrá en la Tierra si no se cumple el objetivo de mantener el ascenso de las temperaturas por debajo de los dos grados centígrados. Los ministros de Asuntos Exteriores y de Energía y Cambio Climático, los hermanos David y Ed Miliband, presentaron el mapa en el Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Londres, junto a John Beddington, científico asesor del Gobierno.

El Reino Unido advierte de que una subida de las temperaturas de más de dos grados tendrá tremendas consecuencias para el planeta, como fuertes efectos en el abastecimiento de agua, la producción agrícola, temperaturas extremas, sequías, el peligro de incendios forestales y el aumento del nivel del mar. Advierte también de que puede disminuir la producción de cereales en todas las regiones productoras, mientras que la mitad de los glaciales del Himalaya pueden reducirse en el 2050. El mapa ha sido desarrollado usando la información y el análisis científico del Centro Hadley de la Oficina Meteorológica Británica. El titular de Asuntos Exteriores, David Miliband, dijo que no es posible "un mundo de cuatro grados".

"Este mapa ilustra claramente la escala del reto al que hoy nos enfrentamos, el cambio climático es un problema global que necesita una solución global y es una solución que tenemos a nuestro alcance", afirmó el jefe de la diplomacia británica. "Pero -añadió- para atajar el problema del cambio climático, todos nosotros, los ministros de Asuntos Exteriores, Medioambiente, Economía, Defensa y otras áreas del Gobierno y las sociedades deben trabajar juntas para mantener la subida de temperatura en dos grados. Sólo de esta manera podremos minimizar los enormes riesgos a la seguridad que representa una subida de 4 grados en el mundo".

Por su parte, el ministro de Energía y Cambio Climático, Ed Miliband, señaló que el mapa pone de manifiesto la importancia de las negociaciones de diciembre en Copenhague. "Los científicos del Reino Unido han ayudado a ilustrar los efectos catastróficos que resultarán si el mundo fracasa en establecer el límite del incremento de la temperatura en dos grados", puntualizó Ed Miliband.

Growing Cities: Vancouver’s Living Roof

Check out the first installment of new documentary series called Growing Cities, which takes a look at environmentally friendly architecture in cities. The first episode features the Vancouver Convention Center in British Columbia, who's 6 acre roof is covered in native grasslands. It's pretty interesting listening to landscape architect Bruce Hemstock talking about the project, you can definitely tell that he's a plant nerd (I mean that in only the nicest ways.)

It's really neat seeing the roof from above, how it almost melts into the surrounding scenery, but I wonder how many people actually get to see it?

I can't remember where I came across this guy, but Brandon Blommaert is a huge weirdo, and I mean that in the nicest way. The images above are from a series called eco_station, and feature handmade creatures placed into epic photos. The effect sort of reminds me of Wayne White's paintings, but with creatures instead of text. There's a behind-the-scenes look of him creating these creatures as well.

october 2009 marks the completiton of the office building 'steckelhörn 11'
by j. mayer h. architects, located in the old centre of hamburg (close to the prominent
new 'hafen city development). it replaces a ruinous building and fills the gap between
two historic premises. the triangular-shaped lot stretches across the city block, thus
allowing for a narrow façade of about 1.9 m width facing the harbor and a main elevation
of about 26.4 m oriented toward steckelhörn street. the vertical design and soft setbacks
of the latter pay tribute to the massing of the surrounding structures, as well as to local
building-height regulations. cantilevered elements in the main facade create a series
of specific spatial qualities on the inside and outside. the top floors provide additional
outside space, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the city of hamburg. the particular
geometry of the floor plan is the basis for the organization of the building, which architecturally
and programmatically presents itself openly to steckelhoern street while at the same time
forming a characteristic landmark when perceived from the historic 'speicherstadt' and new
'hafen city'. as the ground level is conceived either as a spacious lobby for the main tenant
or a public cafe, the upper floors provide for generous, flexible office space, most of it allowing
a view of the 'katharinenkirche' and/or the 'hafen city'. the top floors provide additional outside
space on balconies/loggias and a roof terrace, offering a spectacular panoramic view over
the old and new city of hamburg.

dutch based korean studio joon & jung has sent us images of their 'cloudmon'
sculptural paper toy. influenced by the shape of a cumulous cloud, the blue legs are
used as a metaphor for rain drops.

'cloudmon' was exhibited in gallery mu paper zoo group exhibition during the dutch
design week 09.

Here's an art installation from Synchronicity, an architecture/arts festival in Warsaw, Poland. Conceived by Jakub Szczęsny as a member of the design collective Centrala, it consists of a floating island fitted with exercise machines. When the machines are being used, water gets pumped from the polluted Vistula River to a filtration device located overhead at the center of the platform. The water is intended to be potable at the end of its purification cycle, ready for use by thirsty festivalgoers.

According to Szczęsny: "The whole installation is supposed to perform a role of a propaganda tool changing the consciousness of Warsawers by showing the efficiency of human action in the process of purifying the waters of their river. What's meaningful is the fact that many Poles, even after twenty years of liberalization, still don't believe in their own potential as individuals or members of communities, in positively changing their environment."

Could Szczęsny also be presenting us an alternative to the much maligned bottled water? One could set up a stringed necklace of these water islands on a river, say, the Thames, or along a waterfront, say, Chicago's Lakefront, besides trails frequented by joggers, bikers and marathoners in training who, as a communal activity (a civic responsibility, in fact), keep the tanks full for use by themselves and the marginally active.

hoy escuchaba en la radio un programa muy bueno sobre spanglish, lo cual me hizo recordar blade runner, [que por cierto ya tiene 28 años!!] una de mis peliculas favoritas. y pienso si alguna vez nos tocará vivir un mundo asi de globalizado, caotico y alienante, pero cuando veo estos videos me doy cuenta que tal vez si nos toque.

si quieren regalarme algo de cumpleaños un "zeno" no estaría mal.

estimados primalianos,

ahora que estamos reciclando y eliminando el concepto de "basura", me parece interesante que conozcamos los simbolos para reciclaje y su iconografia, en wikipedia hay buena informacion y encontre otro sitio donde viene incluso quien es el diseñador del logo.

a ver si alguien hace algunos logos "propios" de primal para reciclaje y rotular nuestros contenedores.

en esta etapa vamos a colocar todos los plasticos en un solo contenedor, pero mas adelante tendremos que separar cada plastico en su contenedor especifico, vayan fijandose en el simbolo que viene por lo regular debajo de cada botella o tapa.

big, evolución, mutaciones, nunca tirarar nada, las ideas se pueden reciclar, edificios como montañas, y ademas comics, una gran platica!

lo que mas me gusta de esta exposicion es la capacidad de mr. bjarke para contar historias, para empujar sus ideas, intensidad pura, seguramente contagia a sus clientes de la misma manera en la que contagia a su equipo.

today the official unveiling ceremony of ben van berkel / UNstudio's new amsterdam pavilion
will take place in battery park, new york. the new amsterdam plein and pavilion, commissioned
by the battery conservancy, is a gift from the netherlands to new york in honour of 400 years
of friendship. the pavilion will provide digital information points acquainting visitors with both
the surrounding neighborhood and new york city, as well as providing information about events
in the netherlands.

ben van berkel commented, 'the ideal site for a permanent commemoration of 400 years of dutch
history in new york because it is steeped in a sense of a shared past and looks directly toward the
harbor where henry hudson sailed. it is also focused on the future by virtue of its role as a modern
transportation hub within the constantly changing scene of lower manhattan. this is a site where
history meets the future.'

yesterday the conceptual masterplan for the milan world exposition 2015 was unveiled.
the challenging project is dedicated to the theme 'feeding the planet, energy for life'.
the five architects stefano boeri, richard burdett, mark rylander, jacques herzog
and william mcdonough illustrated the development, stylistic lines and creative principles
that will shape the area where the expo is to be held.

the expo they envisioned will be a planetary botanical garden open to the citizens of milan
and the world. a place for a fresh encounter between farming and the city that will feed
milan literally, spiritually and intellectually. a vast agrofood park built on an orthogonal
grid, surrounded by water ways and punctuated by striking landscape architecture.

the principle behind this new planetary garden is the urban plan of roman towns with
their twin axes, the cardo and the decumanus, that extraordinary paradigm consisting of
two perpendicular streets with a forum at the centre which has for centuries been the model
for thousands of cities across the world. the ﬁrst axis, 1.4 kilometres long, laid in the same
direction of the ancient sempione road, will be a broad boulevard where visitors can stroll
or cycle, comparable in size to the ramblas in barcelona or the champs elysées in paris.
it will become the symbol of expo 2015.

at the centre of the axis a large planetary table will allow people to rest, gaze at the pavilions
and sample the food produced and offered by the different countries represented.
a second perpendicular axis will reﬂect the geometries of the farmlands that surrounds milan.
it will serve as the basis for the subdivision into lots for the national pavilions which will
face onto the central axis, each with the same area of land regardless of their geopolitical
power. the two axes will create a vast open grid of spaces. some of these will be developed
by the expo organisation, others by the individual countries themselves.

in the same spirit of trying to valorise existing resources they focused on the question
of food and being cost concious, they wanted to extend the living energy of the expo
site to the whole metropolitan area. they therefore rethought the water ways project to
focus attention and resources on the reclamation and redevelopment of public and municipal
farmsteads which dot the milanese countryside and the network of canals that ﬂow through it.

Masakatsu Sashie's fantastic "orb" paintings depict large, city-like spheres that float gently above the remains of a failed civilization. The giant orbs, which seem to be self-contained worlds unto themselves, are pieced together from the scraps of old Showa-period buildings and bits of consumer culture, such as vending machines, pachinko parlors, fast food signs, and video game components. Part retro and part sci-fi, the orbs appear to hover gracefully between the worlds of a nostalgic past and a dystopian future.

encontre, gracias a un tweet de william gibson, a arthur ganson, escultor-ingeniero, su trabajo me recuerda un poco a las esculturas de jose luis rojas en cierto afan de capturar un instante, tal vez en puntos opuestos, uno replicando el movimiento una y otra vez y el otro congelando un momento para poderlo descifrar con calma; y por si fuera poco el tema de la silla es recurrente en los dos.

les dejo aqui el video, que pueden ver en su canal de youtube donde se recrea "machine with chair", les recomiendo primero este porque creo que se aprecia mejor que en la platica de ted, donde se puede ver "cory's little chair"

como buenos fans de google, aqui les dejo el nuevo desarrollo de google: google wave, creo que este va a ser el futuro de la comunicación via web.

y aun que se me hizo muy parecido a lo que hace basecamp para el manejo de proyectos, creo que google wave integra muchas mas cosas de manera mas inteligente y limpia. ademas de que seguramente integrara todos los productos de google como son maps, etc.

quedé muy impresionado al ver lo que hace ross lovegrove, es muy inspiracional el ver como alguien hablá con tanta pasion de lo que hace, considero que es la unica forma de hacer un verdadero cambio en el mundo, PASION.

de lo que mas me gusto de su platica es el hecho de trabajar con el instinto, el dejarte llevar por esa parte primitiva que te dice hacia donde ir; y el no saber como se va a resolver o fabricar eso que estas creando: faith leap

esa pasion es la que necesita el mundo para cambiar, creo que necesitamos horas extras para cambiar todo lo mal que hemos hecho en el mundo.

hay un monton de cliches y formas de simplificar el texto de seth godin que aqui comparto:

a. en el ejercicio: si no duele, no sirve

b. en los negocios: si cualquiera pudiera hacerlo, todo mundo lo haria

y algunos que no me acuerdo, y creo que aunque muchos ya suenan a cliches, mucha verdad se encuentra abajo de la simplificación.

el romper con la zona de comfort, el aceptar criticas, el tratar de hacer cosas de diferente manera, duele; el ego lo resiente, el cuerpo y mente se cansan y en algunos casos reaccionamos con las garras por delante, en autodefensa.

no nos han entrenado para recibir golpe tras golpe: y si alguien nos dice que nuestro trabajo esta mal, o que no le gusto al cliente, o que le hace falta empeño, o que no respondemos como esperaba la demas gente, nos enoja.

habria que entrenar para soportar los embates de la critica, sería un buen workout

Interesting business lesson learned on a bicycle: it's very difficult to improve your performance on the downhills.

I used to dread the uphill parts of my ride. On a recumbent bike, they're particularly difficult. So I'd slog through, barely surviving, looking forward to the superspeedy downhill parts.

Unfortunately, I had a serious accident a few years ago (saving the life of a clueless pedestrian by throwing myself onto the pavement). Downhill might be fast, but it's crazy.

Lesson learned. Now, I look forward to the uphill parts, because that's where the work is, the fun is, the improvement is. On the uphills, I have a reasonable shot at a gain over last time. The downhills are already maxed out by the laws of physics and safety.

The best time to do great customer service is when a customer is upset. The moment you earn your keep as a public speaker is when the room isn't just right or the plane is late or the projector doesn't work or the audience is tired or distracted. The best time to engage with an employee is when everything falls apart, not when you're hitting every milestone. And everyone now knows that the best time to start a project is when the economy is lousy.

Most of your competition spend their days looking forward to those rare moments when everything goes right. Imagine how much leverage you have if you spend your time maximizing those common moments when it doesn't.

Russian artist Victor Dubrovsky creates these amazing little felted animals and I'm obsessed with them. I don't know how exactly he does it, but they look like they're full of life and could start walking around at any moment. He charges about $100 each, which seems pretty reasonable, though I'm not sure how long it takes him to make one of these. I totally want him to make me a black fox, how cute would that be?!

In Stockholm a new hotel-in-hotel concept is opening at the Hotel Scandic Malmen called the Creators Inn. The idea was to design a room based on a creative type of person who was visiting Stockholm, catering to their needs through the concepts of function, products and services. The room is split up into three different sections, the local library, the dream study and the relaxing spa. You're basically given a ton of space in which you can hang out or work, depending upon what your mood is. The rooms even come with a bike which you can ride around town and clothes you can wear in case you don't have anything clean, how crazy is that?

This feels very in the spirit of Ace Hotel or The Standard, but there seems to be more of a personality to the project. The idea that you can call up a Creative Concierge and ask them to play video games with you is pretty astonishing. Now I'm just curious how much this room goes for…

Doing Things Differently Leads To Something Exceptional

Absolut Vodka has teamed up with director Rupert Sanders to create a series of advertisements that absolutely (ugh) make me smile. The ad features a number of different locales, the forest, city, snow and so on, and in each place there's a different word, which eventually creates the phrase, "Doing Things Differently Leads To Something Exceptional." The overall effect is pretty stunning, I mean the creative direction behind it is really top notch.

I think my favorite scene is with the bottles in the forest. They were somehow able to raise and lower the height of the bottles, so when you see it at first they look about waist high. But then later you can see them from below, spelling the word 'Things.' Over 2,000 bottles were used to create the effect.

I've put behind the scene videos for each of the words under the cut, so don't forget to take a peek at those as well. It's really rad being able to see how they created each of these shots.

Another New Where The Wild Things Are Trailer

When it comes to new Where The Wild Things Are movie, I'm of two minds. On one side, I want to know everything and see all there is to be seen. But the other half of me wants to know nothing, and be absolutely surprised when it finally comes out. But I had to post this trailer, which gives a little bit more information and shows a little more of what's to come. Honestly, I feel like I'm going to be smiling and crying the whole time. I think Max Records is going to do an amazing job as Max, which I think is so very important. Without him being believable, and feeling and seeming like a real kid, I think the movie would be cheapened.

This trailer yet again makes me believe that this is going to be the best movie of 2009.
