The Stradivarius of the Bassoon

PRO REEDS is a partner in the "Le Basson Savary" research project of the Bern Academy of Art and the Swiss National Fund. The instruments produced by the Paris bassoon maker, Jean-Nicolas Savary le jeune (1786-1853) were highly regarded and were even called "the Stradivarius of the Bassoon".
An excerpt from the research project description describes the project: "In conjunction with instrument makers, musicians and specialists, a range of well-maintained original instruments will be located and then studied and measured for their playing qualities. From the Instruments, which were created over a 30 year period, a bassoon that is suitable for performances today will be looked for, selected and replicated to original specifications and reeds using historical models will be developed.

Things worth knowing about reeds

Since July the German language music magazine, Clarino Print, has carried a series about reed making with Ricardo Döringer. The articles to date have included: "A Life-long Search", "Everything Used To Be Better" and "Cultivated Weeds". Others will follow and are available in subscription or as PDF files at Clarino Print.

Reed and Acoustic Design

In January of 2008, we transfered the sales operation of our reeds to KREEDO and since February 2009 KREEDO is also an official licensee and produces the complete range of bassoon reeds according to our proven Pro Reeds System at their Frankfurt location. PRO REEDS will be concentrating on Reed & Acoustic Design from here on in. The focus will be relating to licensees as well as consulting instrument makers and music companies around the world.

PRO REEDS was invited as reed supplier to be the guest of Guntram Wolf at Exempla 2009 (a special exhibition during the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich). Wolf was awarded the Bavarian State Award and a Design Award for his "Lupophon". The reed recommendation of the manufacturer: the PRO REEDS model Ho2. Impressions in the gallery.

At 48 pages, it's become 13 pages thicker than our first edition, which we brought out for the music trade fair this year, and contains new items and proven favourites for oboes and bassoons. We would be more than happy to mail you a free catalogue or download the PDF version.

Ordering with the code

Ordering online made easy. Yet another new possibility are the increasingly popular "QR-Codes". They are a further development of the well-known bar codes and can contain numbers as well as letters, including web links.

You only need a recognition software (available as freeware) for a webcam or a camera phone and by photographing the article code you're able to reach the desired reed model in our online shop -- at home or on the go.

We have expanded our websites for mobile devices. Most internet capable cell phones, PDAs, Blackberrys and now also iPhones are included. You can call up our contact data, route planning, tips and tricks, news and events and depending on device even videos or catalogs -- of course also through QR-Code.
