For those who are thinking of selling web space or having multiple domains or subdomains hosted in your account, you should look to see if they provide this, and the amount extra that they charge for this (whether it is a one-time or monthly charge, etc).

Is the type of operating system and server important? Whether you think so or not on the theoretical level, there are a few practical reasons for looking out for the type of server.
In general, if you want to use things like ASP, you have no choice but to look for a Windows NT/2000/XP machine for your server.
Otherwise my preference is to sign up for accounts using the often cheaper, more stable and feature-laden Unix systems running the Apache server. In fact, if dynamically generated pages that can access databases (etc) is what you want, you can always use the more portable (and popular) PHP instead of tying yourself down to ASP. Another reason to prefer Unix-based web hosts (which include web hosts using systems like Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, etc) using the Apache web server is that these servers allow you to configure a lot of facilities that you typically need on your site (error pages, protecting your images, blocking email harvesters, blocking IP addresses, etc) without having to ask your web host to implement them. Knowledge about configuring Apache servers is also widely available, and can be found on thesitewizard.com's Configuring Apache and .htaccess pages as well.
11. Price
I was actually hesitant to list this, but I guess it's futile not to. However, I would caution that while price is always a factor, you should realise that you often get what you pay for, although it's not necessarily true that the most expensive hosts are the best.
12. Monthly/Quarterly/Annual Payment Plans
Most web hosts allow you to select an annual payment plan that gives you a cheaper rate than if you were to pay monthly. My current personal preference is to pay monthly with all new web hosts until I'm assured of their reliability and honesty. Paying monthly allows me to switch web hosts quickly when I find that the current host does not meet my requirements: this way, I'm not tied down to a bad web host because I have prepaid for an entire year. I do this even if the new web host guarantees that they will refund the balance if I'm dissatisfied, since at the point I sign up, I have no assurance that they will honour their guarantee. Later (usually after many months or even more than a year), when I'm satisfied with the host, I often change payment plans to the discounted annual plans.

Not all hosting companies own or lease their own web servers. Some of them are actually resellers for some other hosting company. If you don't stay in the USA, you have the option of hosting your site with some local provider. AMD vs Intel

There are two main competitors in the processor market. AMD and Intel. AMD makes the Athlon and Duron processors, while Intel makes the Celeron and Pentium series of processors. Both these chips can run the same operating systems same software, same peripherals although they will require different motherboards and possibly different memory. It is not very easy to compare the performance of the two either. A 2 GHz Athlon processor from AMD will not run at the same speed as a 2 GHz processor from Intel. In fact the latest AMD models run at 2.2GHz and the latest Intel P4s run at 3.2GHz and give a similar performance. One thing that may help guide you though is AMDs model naming convention. For example the Athlon XP 2000+ will be roughly equivalent to the 2000MHz (2 GHz) Pentium 4. The AMD Athlon XP 1700+ is roughly equivalent to the 1.7Ghz Pentium 4. In both these cases the AMD is we believe slightly faster. It also tends to be slightly cheaper.

Processor Rating

Intel intend to introduce a new processor rating system from mid 2004. This will probably involve giving a processor rating in the form: name, model no. and other info on other performance related data like clock speeds, bus speeds and cache size etc. This Intel processor rating we believe will most likely not make performance comparisons with AMDs processor rating any easier.

Which model should I buy?

The problem with the microprocessor market is that is is one of the fastest evolving technologies in the world. The 2 year old processor I have in my machine is unlikely to be able to cope with the latest games. So in theory you should buy the latest processor to avoid having to upgrade for as long as possible. However, the latest processor is likely to be far more expensive than one that has been on the market for 6-12 months. eg The latest 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processor is more than twice the price of the slightly older 2.8GHz Pentium 4 devices. My recommendation would be to go for the 8-12 month old processor. It's only going to be obsolete 8-12 months before the top of the range model and will save you a couple of hundred dollars.

Your motherboard will dictate which processor you can buy. Remember, you are limited in several ways by your motherboard. It will determine, whether the CPU will be AMD,Intel or another manufacturer. It will also determine the maximum speed of your processor and the maximum system bus speed or Frontside bus (FSB) speed as it is also known.

What is the maximum processor your motherboard will support? Check your motherboard documentation, if you do not have any motherboard documentation, all is not lost. Firstly have a look for your motherboard manufacturer and model normally written on the upper side of the motherboard. Common manufacturers are ABIT, ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte, although there are several dozen motherboard makers. Most online shops like TigerDirect will give you the full breakdown for current models. For older or obsolete models have a look on Google for your particular manufacturer/model, you are almost certain to find the data sheet for it on the internet. Today's benchmark day for AMD's fastest desktop processor -- the Phenom X4 9850. Free of the nasty TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) bug, the stage is now set for a head-to-head with Intel's best. While it's a significant step forward for AMD, the 9850 proc hardly compares with Intel's best quad-core desktop CPUs. Nevertheless, as PCPer says, "any enthusiast or gamer looking for a ~$240 processor is going to have a fantastic experience with the 9850." We're just happy to see AMD back on track and ready to compete. Now get to it AMD, faster clock speeds and 45-nm processes please? Intel needs someone banging at the door to keep Moore's Law from becoming Moore's Recommendation.

AMD to build fastest supercomputer for... games

The chipmaker is teaming up with content developer OTOY to develop and deploy applications, high-definition (HD) content and even games in the cloud using a massively-parallel supercomputer.

Details of the AMD Fusion Render Cloud were unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during a keynote by AMD president and chief executive Dirk Meyer, along with OTOY chief executive Jules Urbach and spokespeople from Lucasfilm, Dell, HP and Electronic Arts.

"AMD has a long track record in the supercomputing world. Seven out of 10 of the world's fastest machines, including the fastest two computers on the planet, are powered by AMD hardware," said Meyer.

"Today, AMD is pleased to announce a new kind of supercomputer unlike any other ever built. It is being designed to break the one petaflop barrier, and to process a million compute threads across more than 1,000 graphics processors."

Meyer claimed that the AMD Fusion Render Cloud will be the fastest graphics supercomputer ever built, and will be ready in the latter half of 2009.

"It will be powered by OTOY's software for a singular purpose: to make HD cloud computing a reality," he added.

The system aims to use server-side rendering to allow content providers to deliver PC applications, video games and other graphics-intensive applications to virtually any type of mobile device with a web browser, without killing battery life and alleviating the need for powerful client-side processors.

Once rendered and stored in this cloud environment, the data can be compressed and streamed in real time over a wireless or broadband connection to devices such as smartphones, set-top boxes and ultra-thin notebooks.

"By fusing industry leading CPU technology with computationally dense, massively parallel graphics processors, the AMD Fusion Render Cloud can rival the world's most powerful industrial computing devices, but requires just a fraction of the floor space, power envelope and cost associated with many of today's leading supercomputers," said Urbach.

The AMD Fusion Render Cloud will be powered by AMD-optimised hardware including the newly announced AMD Phenom II processors, AMD 790 chipsets and ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics processors, while OTOY will provide technical software development and a middleware layer.

"The AMD Fusion Render Cloud will allow directors like Robert Rodriguez of Troublemaker Studios to break through existing CPU-only and graphics processor-only render bottlenecks which have imposed limitations on the creation of true HD assets," said Charlie Boswell, director of digital media and entertainment at AMD.

"Imagine watching a movie halfway through on your cellphone while on the bus home, then switching over to your HD TV and continuing to watch the same movie from exactly where you left off, seamlessly and at full-screen resolution.

"Imagine playing the most visually intensive first-person shooter game at the highest image quality settings on your cellphone without ever having to download and install the software, or use up valuable storage space or battery life with compute-intensive tasks.
