Ongota is a story about an Italian linguist who goes to Ethiopia with a purely scientific mission: to document a dying language. With time passing by, he personally gets more and more involved with the 12 remaining speakers of Ongota. It is a struggle to alter the course of a possibly irrevocable destiny.

We chose this video because of the beautiful camera work Weijs Films brought to the screen. The clear shots capture the Ethiopian tribe in their daily life and the way they interact with the Italian linguist. Good color used as well.

This was an experimental video shot by Leonardo Dalessandri. Using tight frames and amazing color, he captures what’s going on around him in the summertime.

We chose this video because of the amazing use of color in the video. Dalessandri has fantastic grade and good exposure of texture and colors.

This video by Samu Ainesmaa was shot on Canon 5DmarkII and is a cinematography montage of unused footage shot during May, June and July for pure enjoyment and practice on his new camera.

We chose this clip because of the way the videographer took simple shots and raw footage and transformed it into something that has depth and perspective. What makes this video unique is the footage used in this video was “unused” footage from some of his other videos. As the artist put it, he didn’t want to “trash some gems”.

Philip Bloom has captured the human essence in this short clip shot over a couple of nights. He took his 5dmk2 out on the streets and got shots of the inhabitants and visitors, then put together this clip which celebrates human life.

We chose this video because of the celebration of human life. The camera shots are simple but the lighting is beautiful. All it is, are people just smiling and going about their nighttime activities but it brings a smile to the viewers face just seeing their fellow human beings out and about on a beautiful night.

The extreme sport takes on another dimension.

Shot by Torbjørn Fjellestad at the Ekstremsportveko 2009 (Extreme sport week), we see a whole new realm of surfing possiblities. These pioneers leave the ocean shores and surf the current of a frigid Norwegian river.

We choose this video for its excellent slow motion cinematography, wonderful action footage, and for the humanizing emotion it brings to all riders involved.

Dan Blank presents a 15-minute stop motion short story on the horrors of “soldier games.” Blank’s take on a post-atomic bomb Hiroshima is a jaw-dropping combination of a stellar script, superb stop-motion film, and raw emotion.

David Fry profiles one precocious skateboarder as he rolls down the road to stardom. Only 13 at the time of production, Sky Siljeg is one of the best skateboarders in the world. Fry includes some great amateur footage of Siljeg’s earlier days and revealing interviews with his friends, family and the kid himself.

This short documentary by Nick Fogarty was shot with a 16mm camera. Fogarty tells a short story very well using short clips and multiple characters.

We chose this video because of the good use of both still photos and camera footage. Done with a gritty-type of storytelling, this video captures the unusual photography of several individuals.

The filmmaker Sébastien Montaz-Rosset has captured the subtle beauty and intimate moments of his wife’s relationship with her young daughters while on their family vacation in Finale Ligure, Italy. The precise camera work along with a relaxing soundtrack demonstrates to the viewer the beauty of a mother-daughter relationship.

We chose this video because of the nuances in it. The black and white camera work along with a soothing piano underlay pulls the viewer into the intimate moments between the mother and her young daughters. With the tight shots and clear angles the viewer can see the closeness between the girls and their mother.
