5 apps that make you more productive

Smartphone apps generally tend to serve as a distraction, but what about using tech to get motivated and achieve your goals? These apps promise to help you become more productive, whether you want to read more books, lose weight or tackle a project -- some in rather unconventional ways. Want more? Check out our hands-on test of the Astrid To-Do List app.<fieldset><fieldset>

aherk_step1.png

Aherk
Free; online

Aherk describes itself as a "goal-oriented, self-blackmailing service." The process is simple: first, you define a goal and tell the app what your deadline is. Next, upload an embarrassing or unflattering photo of yourself. Once the deadline hits, your friends vote on Facebook and tell Aherk whether your goal was completed or not. And if not, the app will post the aforementioned photo (a Facebook account is mandatory to use Aherk).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

carrot.jpg

CARROT
$0.99; iPhone

Carrot is a little gentler. This app describes itself as a "to-do list with a personality." Your job is to keep Carrot happy by getting things done. Each time you complete a task, you can unlock app upgrades and games. But, if several hours have passed and you haven't done anything, Carrot warns you of a mood swing, though it's not clear what happens if you dare ignore that warning. PCMag.com offers a solid review of this app, warning that while it's entertaining, it may not really help you get things done.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

dietbet.jpg

DietBet
Charges vary; online

DietBet is a four-week social dieting game. You can either start your own game or join one that's about to begin. To start, each player puts a pre-determined amount of money into a pot. After four weeks, whoever has managed to lose 4 percent of his or her starting weight is considered a winner. Winners then split the pot. However, DietBet charges winners a fee between 5 and 15 percent of the payout to cover its expenses. Participants are asked to submit photos of themselves on a scale as well as a close-up of the number on the scale to prevent cheating.

</fieldset>

For example, The One wireless activity and sleep tracker is a clip-on device that monitors your activity around the clock (e.g. the number of steps you take in a day, how many calories you've burned, how long you've slept). You can sync Fitbit's devices with the iPhone and Android apps to see your progress and share with friends. Fitbit members get badges as they achieve their goals.

After downloading the app, you can select from over 300,000 activities, such as reading or exercising, or you can create your own. As you check off tasks, the app compiles a report so you can see how you are doing. Using the app to monitor your progress, you and your friends can see how active everyone is being and motivate one another. The company says it will soon release a web version of the app.

Three ways to recycle your used athletic shoes

If you exercise regularly, you probably wear through sneakers rather quickly. Rather than throw away those used shoes, recycle them. Your old shoes could help foster a microbusiness in Africa, protect the feet of a needy child in Haiti, become part of a new tennis court, or live on in the soles of an athlete's new shoes.

read more

CRT challenge looks for new ways to get rid of old picture tubes

The cathode-ray tube (CRT) is, for all intents and purposes, dead. Long the predominant technology for TVs, computer monitors, and more, CRTs have given way to beautiful flat-panel monitors, mostly LCDs.

But while the CRT is dead, it can't be forgotten -- not with somewhere around two billion pounds of obsolete TVs, computer monitors and other hardware that's reaching the end of its product lifecycle. What to do with all of that e-waste -- in particular, the lead-laden glass from old picture tubes -- has become a major headache that promises to only get bigger.

Stumped for answers, industry is turning to the public for help. If you think you have an innovative use for CRT glass, your idea can earn all or part of a $10,000 prize.
read more

How to build the perfect cookware set, one piece at a time

In researching our recent report on cookware, we identified several top-rated sets. However, we kept coming across the same complaint: The cookware sets many consumers bought don't contain the pieces they need most. The editors of Cook's Illustrated magazine agree, saying manufacturers usually include cookware that isn't the right size or shape, while omitting must-have pots and pans. We set out to determine which pieces should be included in the ideal cookware collection.
read more

Here's a secret: Many top home fitness celebrities post free workouts on YouTube. But of the more than 600,000 videos that come up when searching for "fitness workouts," which is the best?

I looked past the muscle and the rippling physiques of the most popular fitness channels to put together this guide of who to follow and who to forgo (without critiquing their methods or effectiveness), so you know what to expect and can choose the right workouts for your goals.
Buying a leftover TV

It's March Madness time again. No, I'm not talking about the big college basketball tournament that started this past weekend. Rather I'm referring to that time of year when TV makers are willing to do what it takes -- for the most part -- to clear store shelves of their 2012 models before the 2013 sets go on sale. In addition, some trends in TV retailing make picking up a leftover set an even better deal than in years past. And if you need another excuse to pull the trigger, there is the thrill of following the bouncing basketballs on a brand new HDTV.
read more

Last night, Samsung held a splashy event at Radio City Music Hall for its latest smartphone, the Galaxy S4. Emceed by Broadway actor Will Chase, who like every New York actor has appeared on an episode of Law & Order, the event featured a number of theatrical sketches that demonstrated some of the S4's new features. Understated, it was not. While the press filled the theater, thousands were watching the livestream of the event on jumbotrons in Times Square and on YouTube. After the presentation, we had the opportunity to try out pre-production units. Here's what you need to know.

read more

While virtually all parents know that weaning baby from the bottle is inevitable, many assume that the sippy stage can go on well past babyhood for their spill-prone toddlers. However, speech pathologists warn that the leak-proof spouts that parents and tots love so much may be just as problematic for a child's dental health as bottles.
read more

They give you rebates for buying everything from auto parts and groceries to clothes and appliances -- from your smartphone or computer -- or alert you to rebate deals as you shop so you can take advantage of the latest consumer incentive programs.

Bonus: You don't need to earn and redeem points. Your savings go right into your PayPal account or are sent to you in the form of cash or a pre-paid merchant or Visa gift card.

Want to get in on the action? Check out the latest rebate apps and websites.<fieldset><fieldset>

ibapprebate.png

ibotta (free, iOS, Android)

With the ibotta app, earning cash rebates is a multistep process. Use the app to pre-select featured products that you think you're going to buy on your next shopping trip. For each product, complete the app's required tasks, which may include taking a short poll or reading a recipe. There were 36 retailers and 38 groceries or personal care products to choose from as of this writing. Rebates accumulate in your ibotta account. You can send them to your PayPal account or donate them to any school in America. Age-old budgeting tip: Just like with couponing, select products you'd normally buy anyway.

Each affiliate "etailer" pays you 1 percent to 75 percent of a product's purchase price; rebates vary per etailer. Just register at the site with your e-mail address and password. Your account will immediately be credited with a $5 sign-up bonus. Then, begin shopping by store, product or category. If you shop by product, the site's comparison tool will display retailers with the best prices. After purchasing, rebates will be credited to your CashBackCat account. You can also search for deals by location, category or retailer. At your fingertips will be the rebate details: the reward, which is typically a prepaid Visa or merchant gift card or check; the purchase you need to make to earn the reward; the deal deadline and other specifics, such as whether you'll need to submit your sales receipt and UPC code from the product and when you can expect to receive your rebate. Bonus: GoRebate tracks the rebates you've submitted through the app so you can make sure to get what's due.

3D printing at home

Makerbot has gotten a lot of buzz for its Replicator 3D printers, which can interpret designs and then build (print) objects while you watch. They're not the only player in town anymore - there are lots of options for anyone to start doodling or printing in 3D. Staples has announced that it will soon offer a 3D printing service in its stores, starting in Europe. But those of us in the U.S. and elsewhere can check out the following tools to use at home, in the meantime. The list of things you can create with 3D printers is practically endless: napkin rings, iPhone stands, poker chips, jewelry -- even the Eiffel Tower.
<fieldset><fieldset>

3doodler.jpg

3Doodler

The 3Doodler is a 3D printing pen that's said to be as easy to use as it is to doodle on paper. When you start to draw, heated plastic oozes out of the pen, which is then cooled by an integrated fan so that it turns solid. It works on any surface, or even in the air. You can watch a video of how it works here. The only catch is that it's not yet for sale. The makers of the 3Doodler raised money on Kickstarter and are well above their goal. The 3Doodler should begin shipping next February to those who pledged at least $50.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

shapeways.jpg

Shapeways

Shapeways is a 3D printing marketplace and community that helps users create, share, sell and buy designs. On their website, you can create a design, upload a 3D file, select material, and order 3D prints. You can use numerous 3D apps to make the process simpler. Or you can hire a designer through the community. Once you have created your items, you can then set up shop and sell your wares in the Shapeways Marketplace.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

sculpteo.jpg

Sculpteo

Sculpteo is another 3D printing service that allows you to upload 3D files of your designs and order prints. To get a sense for what Sculpteo can create, you can order a 3D key ring free of charge. The site offers numerous workshops too. Like Shapeways, the site also allows you to sell and buy 3D printed objects.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

cubify_cube_lifestyle.jpg

Cube 3D printer

Want to print your creations in the comfort of your home? The Cube 3D printer ($1,569 and up) takes your designs and molds them out of plastic filament. Examples of what the Cube 3D printer can create include earrings, robots, planes, mugs, doorknobs, dog toys, dog tags, real shoes, phone cases, floating bath toys, napkin rings, linked bracelets and chess pieces.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

makerbotreplicator2.jpg

Makerbot

Makerbot sells three different 3D printers in its Replicator line (prices start at $1749). You can use your own design or download a model from the "Thingiverse," a collection of designs that have been created using Makerbot 3D printers, such as photo frames, smartphone cases and even camera lens filters. Makerbot also has a 3D scanner in the works, the Digitizer, that can take 3D objects and turn them into designs so you can recreate them.

How to block calls and texts on your smartphone

Whether it's a former boyfriend, girlfriend or a persistent telemarketer, unwanted calls and texts can be a pain, and depending on your cellphone plan, an added expense. Thankfully, there are ways to block these calls or at least find out who is pestering you. The following apps and services will help limit the ringing of your cellphone. Availability may vary according to your cellphone model and carrier. <fieldset><fieldset>

donotcall.jpg

National Do Not Call Registry

The first thing you should do is register your cellphone (and home phone if you have a landline) at donotcall.gov. Registration is simple: enter your phone numbers (up to three) and your email address. Once submitted, you will receive an email with a link to click on to complete your registration. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint on the website. And as of 2007, your registration will not expire, so you'll only have to do this once.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

trapcall.jpg

TrapCall (Android; BlackBerry, iPhone; pricing varies)

TrapCall doesn't block calls, but it unmasks blocked caller IDs. This way, at least will know the number behind the call. You can then add that number to your "blacklist" and every time you ignore a call from a blacklisted caller, they'll hear a message telling them your number has been disconnected. Additional features include call recording, voicemail transcriptions, and more. It's a pay-as-you-go service, with rates ranging from $3.71 to $24.95 per month. TrapCall currently supports AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, US Cellular, and MetroPCS in the US. Set-up varies depending on the carrier. There are apps for BlackBerry and Android, while iPhone users must sign up at TrapCall's website.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

call_control_android.jpg

Call Control (Android, BlackBerry; free)

Call Control allows you to block unwanted calls and text messages by creating black and white lists; there is a three number limit in the lite version of the app. The Pro version, which costs $7.99, gives you unlimited blacklist entries. In both versions you can access the Community Black List, which blocks calls reported by the Call Control user community. In addition to blocking calls, the app can also send blocked numbers to voicemail or disconnect the call.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

googlevoice.jpg

Google Voice (online; requires Google account)

Google Voice has numerous features, from voicemail transcription to conference calls to number porting. With respect to blocking calls, you can block certain callers directly from your Google Voice inbox by clicking on the "more" link underneath the number (you'll have to add the number to your contacts). The blocked caller will then hear a canned message saying that this number has been disconnected or is no longer in service. You can also create personalized greetings for certain numbers. Just go to the Contacts tab and choose an existing recorded message or record one right there and then.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

iblacklist.jpg

iBlacklist ($12; iPhone -- jailbroken only)

Despite the countless features of the iPhone, there is no way to block unwanted calls, out of the box. When you receive an incoming call with iOS 6, you will have four options: accept the call, decline it, hang up and reply with a text message or hang up and be reminded later of the caller. If you want to block unwanted calls on your iPhone, you will first need to jailbreak it. (Note: jailbreaking your phone breaks the warranty). Then, you can install apps such as iBlacklist, which allows you to block calls and texts, set up SMS auto replies, manage parental controls and more.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

att.jpg

Carrier-specific services

Last but not least, there are some carrier-specific services. AT&T, for example, has a Smart Limits for Wireless ($4.99 per month) program that allows you to block up to 30 numbers. Sprint users can go to Sprint.com to block calls under the My Sprint->My preferences->block voice tab. Verizon users can similarly use the Call Block option to reject calls from phone numbers on a list you establish. Depending on your region, this list may be limited to either 6 or 12 numbers. You can also always try calling your provider and asking them to block the number for you.

</fieldset>

Beauty face-off: 8 makeup remover wipes put to the test

A sexy smoky eye, luscious red lip stain and mascara laced-lashes are all necessary components for the perfect night out. But they're also pretty darn hard to take off at the end of the night. We've all been there before, it's 3am, you're tired and you don't want to have to scrub all your makeup off. It's not like your eyeliner or mascara is going to surrender and come off easily, so what's the point, right?

We put eight makeup remover wipes to the test to see if they really live up to claims like, "removes makeup all in one swipe;" "no greasy residue;" "dissolves all traces of makeup--even waterproof mascara." After lots of scrubbing, tingling and getting over seeing our makeup-less photos, we found the best makeup remover wipe. Read on for more.<fieldset><fieldset>

bracket1.jpg

Methodology. We looked at the top-selling makeup remover wipes on Amazon and Drugstore.com to come up with eight picks for our March Madness bracket-style competition. Each wipe was given a number that we pulled out of a hat to create the match-ups in this head to head competition. The makeup remover wipes were tested based on their ability to remove all makeup easily, the feel and smell of the wipe and whether or not a good face washing was needed after use. All of the wipes were tested in round one and winners were tested in round two. The final two winners from round two faced-off in the final round where the top performing wipe is named. Each wipe could get a maximum score of 14. Eight wipes, seven testers and only one winner! Click through to find out who comes out on top!

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

gina_full_makeup_round_1.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group A

Makeup: Foundation, blush, illuminator, eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes) and Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil-Free Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes (*Est 6.99 for 25 wipes).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

gina_both_sides_round_1.jpg

Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (right side)

Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3

Overall: 10/14

Verdict: This wipe scored high because of its cooling sensation, lack of tingling and decent ability to remove makeup. The tester was satisfied with the results although all of her eyeliner didn't come off and the wipe "smelled weird."

VS

Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil-Free Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes (left side)

Price: *Est 6.99 for 25 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 1 Residue: 3

Overall: 7/14

Verdict: If you like extreme tingling when wiping makeup off of your face, this wipe may be for you. However, the tester's skin felt irritated and quite frankly not so good after use. The wipe's performance also wasn't up to the testers standards. It took a lot of scrubbing to get her makeup off and even with that her waterproof eyeliner put up a fight...;and won.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

olay.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group A Winner

Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

malorie_full_makeup_round_1.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group B

Makeup: Eye shadow, eyeliner on bottom lash line and mascara.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes (*Est $5.79 for 30 wipes) and Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

malorie_both_sides_round_1.jpg

Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes (right side)

Price: *Est $5.79 for 30 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3

Overall: 9/14

Verdict: A word to the wise: Eyeliner and mascara-obsessed ladies stay clear of this wipe. After using this wipe the tester felt a "burning sensation" around her eyes - "it tingled for a bit then died down." Although the tester gave this wipe a good performance rating, she noted it took a lot of effort to get all of her makeup off and even with that extra effort there was eyeliner left over. She noted "I feel like I would need to use eye makeup remover before using this wipe."

VS

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (left side)

Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 5 Residue: 3

Overall: 12/14

Verdict: Aveeno's Ultra-calming makeup remover wipe is a shining star in the "feel and smell" category. The tester described the scent as being powerful, very strong, but not bad. The wipe felt soft and smooth to the touch and left her skin feeling softer after use. With this wipe leaving "just a little" residue she didn't have to wash her face after. Satisfied customer.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

aveeno.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group B Winner

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

sam_full_makeup_round_1.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group A

Makeup: Waterproof eyeliner (on top), waterproof mascara and blush.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Studio 35 Beauty Cleansing Towelettes (Walgreens Cleansing Towelettes) (*Est $5 for 30 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

sam_both_sides_round_1.jpg

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)

Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3

Overall: 10/14

Verdict: This tester wanted to see how well Noxzema stood up to waterproof eyeliner. The result? It faired just ok leaving some eyeliner even though she used firm pressure. A mediocre performance coupled with a good "feel and smell" rating left this tester somewhat satisfied.

VS

Studio 35 Beauty Cleansing Towelettes (Walgreens Cleansing Towelettes) (left side)

Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3

Overall: 10/14

Verdict: This Walgreens brand makeup remover wipe says "Compare to Pond's Original All Day Clean Wet Cleansing Towelettes," but compared to Noxzema the results were pretty much the same. The only complaint the tester had about this wipe was it left behind more makeup than the Noxzema and it was no match for waterproof eyeliner.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

noxema.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group A Winner

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

carey_full_makeup_round_1.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group B

Makeup: Mascara, blush, tinted CC cream and lipstick.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes) and Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (*Est $6.99 for 25 wipes).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

carey_both_sides_round_1.jpg

Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (right side)

Price: *Est $5.50 for 25 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 4

Overall: 12/14

Verdict: Tester-approved! Almay received high scores from this tester. It felt good on her skin, removed all of her makeup and didn't leave any residue. This wipe was even able to wipe her mascara off with ease leaving her "somewhat satisfied."

VS

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (left side)

Price: *Est $6.99 for 25 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3

Overall: 8/14

Verdict: This Neutrogena makeup remover wipe needed some assistance to get the job done. In a battle between mascara and this wipe mascara wins hands down. The tester said she had to use more wipes to fully remove her makeup. Besides a low performance score, the tester said the wipe made her skin sting for at least 5-10 minutes after use. To put it simply, she was not satisfied at all.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

almay.jpg

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group B Winner

Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes)

Round 2: Bracket 1, Semifinals

Makeup: Tinted CC cream and mascara.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes) and Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes).

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (right side)

Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3

Overall: 11/14

Verdict: Aveeno's fresh scented wipes were a big hit for this tester. She said they "smelled nice" and unlike other wipes she tested, they didn't burn her face. This wipe took off most of her mascara giving it a fairly high performance rating. The tester found removing her makeup required minimal effort and she was left with just a little residue.

VS

Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes-Sensitive (left side)

Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3

Overall: 8/14

Verdict: Olay's cleansing towelettes received a good rating for leaving only a little bit of residue after use. Other than that this wipe left the tester unsatisfied. She had to use a lot of effort to get her makeup off and the wipe made her mascara run. The low score on "feel and smell" was due to the burning sensation caused by the wipe.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

aveeno.jpg

Round 2: Bracket 1, Semifinals Winner

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

gina_full_makeup_round_2.jpg

Round 2: Bracket 2, Semifinals

Makeup: Foundation, blush, illuminator, eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

gina_both_sides_round_2.jpg

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)

Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 2

Overall: 10/14

Verdict: The Noxzema makeup remover wipe performed much better than the Almay in this tester's opinion. Its ability to get most of her eyeliner off left her "very satisfied." She felt she would only need to use a tissue to remove the remaining eyeliner.

VS

Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (left side)

Price: *Est $5.50 for 25 wipes

Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 3 Residue: 2

Overall: 8/14

Verdict: In two words this makeup remover was: Just ok. It removed most of the tester's makeup but when she tried to get the eyeliner off it just spread it out more. This made it harder for her to get the makeup out of the corner of her eye. Overall, the tester didn't find anything to be particularly special about the wipe because of its low performance, feel and smell and residue it left.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

noxema.jpg

Round 2: Bracket 2, Semifinals Winner

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

jillian_full_makeup.jpg

Final Round

Makeup: Water-resistant mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, foundation and bronzer.

Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

jillian_both_sides.jpg

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)

Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes

Performance: 5 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3

Overall: 12/14

Verdict: This tester gave the Noxzema wipe high scores because it took her loads of makeup off with little effort. "I had a ton of makeup on and the majority came off my eye in one swipe," she noted. Eyeliner was no match for this wipe--all gone, but mascara only came off half way.

VS

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (left side)

Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes

Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 3 Residue: 2

Overall: 9/14

Verdict: The Aveeno wipe scores high in the performance rating because of its fast results and minimal effort to rid the tester of most of her makeup (some eyeliner and mascara was left behind). The tester complained that the smell was strong and it made her skin red, eyes burn and left some residue behind.

And the winner is...;

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

noxema.jpg

Final Round Winner

An old school brand that's been taking care of women's skin for years prevails in this competition. Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) beat out the seven other makeup remover wipes because of its ability to remove the majority of the testers' makeup with ease; and its gentle formula which didn't cause any tingling or burning of the skin.

Strollers and theme parks: A common sense guide

Making a trip to a theme park or amusement park is not as simple as just packing your car and showing up at the gate with a high-limit credit card. If you're bringing along a baby or toddler, you need to be sure they're going to be comfortable for a long day -- or multiple days -- of walking many miles around a large park. The best way to handle that is to bring or rent a stroller, but it's important to understand that the stroller isn't allowed everywhere that people are; including ride lines, restaurants and (unfolded) on park transport.
read more

4 multitasking baby products that save you money

Those calming breaths you learned to do in childbirth class? They'll come in handy in the baby superstore aisle, too. That's because baby products are a $9.8 billion industry in the U.S. with hundreds of new products added to the line-up each year. To save money, it pays to buy products that do more than one thing or that can be converted to something non-baby-related later. Here are four baby products that can give you your money's worth.<fieldset><fieldset>

grassdryer.jpg

Boon Winter Grass Countertop Drying Rack, $17.99

This handy drying rack has flexible plastic (BPA, PVC and phthalate-free) grass-like blades that cradle hand-washed bottles, nipples, other bottle parts and baby spoons. Water drains into the lower tray. Multi-tasking bonus: The Boon Grass drying rack is a great way to dry delicate wine glasses. The plastic grass holds upside-down stemware in place so they're less likely to break, compared to the rough and tumble of a regular dish rack.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

babeecover.jpg

Babee Covee 6-in-1 Baby Blanket and Cover, $39.99 - $49.99

This mom-invented product functions six ways. It can be used as a car seat tent cover to shield a napping baby from the elements, a nursing cover, a high chair or shopping cart cover for protecting your baby from grimy restaurant or supermarket cart seating, a stroller blanket and a playtime blanket. The Babee Covee is reversible, featuring a printed cotton side and a "minky" plush side. The center Velcro pouch makes it all possible. Best of all: The Babee Covee is machine washable.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

diaperdekor.jpg

Diaper Dekor Plus, $39.95

The Diaper Dekor Plus is more than a diaper pail. Pop out the diaper insert, which is designed to seal in diaper odors, and it becomes a garbage can that you can use way past the diaper phase, in the bathroom, kitchen or garage. The wide opening and sleek design set the stage for the trash-can transformation. The pail is made from durable ABS plastic, which holds up over time and doesn't absorb odors. It comes in soft pink and soft blue for the nursery, but if you're thinking ahead, go with white, black or sage instead.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

packandplay.jpg

Graco Pack 'n Play Playard with Cuddle Cove, $199.99

This play yard comes fully loaded with a removable rocking seat for newborns, a bassinet insert for sleepy babies under 15 pounds, a changing table attachment for babies up to 25 pounds with parent organizer for diapers and supplies and a basic mesh-sided play yard that can function as a travel crib. An electronic module attaches to the Pack 'n Play's rails to add soothing vibration, sounds and songs to your baby's play yard experience (batteries not included). Although the play yard retails for around $200, that's not bad considering that it's four products in one.

</fieldset>

9 cool, strange and innovative mobile trends at #MWC13

Smartphones and tablets and phablets and apps; that's all that occupied my mind last week at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a tradeshow that attracted more than 72,000 visitors from over 200 countries. It was a busy several days, as multitudes of products were launched and myriad trends were spotted. We've already looked at what the Twitterverse took in; here's a sampling of what @MollyMobile saw. (At left are some cool cases and tablet keyboards from Belkin.)<fieldset><fieldset>

huaweiascendmate.jpg

You think the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is big? What about LG's 5.5 inch Optimus G Pro or the 5.7-inch ZTE Grand Memo? Or the Huawei Ascend Mate, which dwarfs them all, at 6.1 inches? "Phace" it, the phablet is here to stay. (See it next to the Galaxy Note 2 over on Digital Trends. "It's so big it makes the Galaxy Note 2 look small," says editor K. T. Bradford.)

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

samsunggalaxynote8.jpg

In an effort to give you options of every size, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 8. Like the Galaxy Note 2, it has a stylus, but the 8 in its name refers to its 8-inch size, not its version. The Note 8, which is due out in spring, is a bonified tablet, but, you can use it to make calls too (headset recommended).

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

asus_padfone.jpg

Every electronics trade show has something truly weird, and at MWC, the prize goes to Asus for its Padfone Infinity. It reminds me a bit of Motorola's Atrix device that launched at CES a few years ago, a smartphone that had an optional dock that turned it into a netbook. In this case, the Padfone Infinity is a 5-inch smartphone that can be docked into a 10-1-inch tablet and thus transformed.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

nokia301.jpg

Not everything at the show was huge in size. Nokia and Samsung each launched small, entry level phones, including the Nokia 105 and 301 (pictured) and the Galaxy Fame and Galaxy Young. Each are geared at newbies that don't need a huge screen or the latest and greatest features.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

firefoxos_screen.jpg

Move over Android, Apple, BlackBerry and Windows, there are some new mobile OS players in town, among them Firefox (pictured) and Ubuntu. Intel also jumped into the fray with its Tizen OS in partnership with Samsung. I'm looking forward to watching how this all shakes out.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

alcatelonetouch_sm.jpg

Believe it or not, there are already a few Firefox phones out there, the first of which is the Alcatel One Touch Fire, a 3.5 inch smartphone in Firefox orange (pictured). ZTE has also partnered with Firefox.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

trendmicro_app.jpg

You've probably heard about security concerns when it comes to Android apps, as the Google Play store isn't locked down like Apple's is. The same software security firms that protect your PC have jumped in to keep your smartphone safe too. I met with Trend Micro to discuss their mobile security app for Android smartphones and tablets, which warns you if download iffy apps or click on dubious website links. Norton/Symantec, Kaspersky and many others offer similar solutions.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

asthmapolis_sensor_photo.jpg

Mobile health was another big trend at MWC. Several mobile companies demonstrated health-related apps on the show floor. Bluetooth SIG (special-interest group) showcased winners and finalists of their Bluetooth Breakthrough Awards. One winner is a smart inhaler, the Asthamapolis, which can track the time and location that an inhaler is used, to give doctors detailed information about their patients with asthma or COPD.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

burtonapp_sequencer.png

Finally, Nokia and Burton Snowboards partnered to create a Windows Phone 8 app (exclusively for Nokia Lumia phones) that helps snowboarders get ready for the slopes with forecasts and equipment information as well as capture image sequences of their jumps and stunts. You can find more info about Burton's app in the Windows Phone store, but it can only be downloaded directly from a Nokia Lumia smartphone. Burton also created some neat-looking insulated cases to protect phones from cold weather.

Bread machine vs. loaf pan

A surprising number of websites and blogs are devoted to bread making -- and according to many, bread machines are the most wonderful invention since, well, sliced bread. Editors at Breadmachinedigest.com, maintain that unlike other small appliances that sit on a shelf collecting dust, bread machines are versatile and fun, will get lots of use, and can save you money over time.

Yet, Mason Currey reports a different sentiment for Slate.com. After testing five popular bread makers, he ultimately concluded that the loaves were not that good, and the effort was just not worth it.

Bread machines can be pricey, and users say there is a learning curve. So, we had to ask, could baking in a plain old loaf pan better "rise" to the occasion? The modern appliance and baking mainstay go head-to-head in this kitchen showdown. Here's what we found:
read more

A tale of two customer service departments

The day you bring home a shiny new food processor can be the best of times--or the worst of times.

Consider the case of two fictitious customers, Audrey and Brian. Both of them have decided to buy new food processors. After consulting our report, Audrey selects the top-rated Cuisinart Prep 11 Plus DLC-2011CHB (*Est. $200), while Brian settles on the Runner-Up KitchenAid KFP750PK (*Est. $160). At first, both of them are very happy with their new kitchen tools. There's no reason not to be; both machines get very good scores for performance in professional tests, run quietly, have dishwasher-safe parts and are generally well rated by owners for ease of use. Then unexpectedly, after about a month, both machines break down.
read more

9 must-see tweets from the Mobile World Congress

Our personal technology editor Molly McLaughlin was one of 72,000 attendees (from over 200 countries!) on the floor in Barcelona this week at the 2013 Mobile World Congress. The premier event in mobile technology, this year's MWC featured more than 1,700 companies exhibiting their latest and greatest in personal electronics. While Molly's Twitter account showcased many of the highlights of the event during the week, the Twitterverse was chock-full of #MWC13 tweets. These are the nine that mobile-conscious consumers must-see:<fieldset><fieldset>

screen_shot_2013-02-26_at_4.24.14_pm.png

If you use your smartphone or tablet everyday, you have probably wondered about the future of these mobile devices and the technology powering them. Intel tackled this question at MWC and explained its theories on the topic in this tweet. In their discussion they cover everything from LTE to cell phone prices.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

screen_shot_2013-02-26_at_4.25.42_pm.png

Slashgear tweeted about the latest streaming device from Huawei, the MediaQ M310. Originally unveiled at last month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, this box top is only 14 mm thick, but packs a powerful punch with its processing system. It is slated to sell for $80. Check out how it compares to its competitors in the Digital Media Player category.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

screen_shot_2013-02-26_at_4.23.56_pm.png

Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop tweeted about the arrival of the latest Nokia phones, including the Nokia 105, which will retail for less than $20. This candy bar phone and its low price point will make mobile more accessible to all consumers; a fact that Elop is thrilled to announced.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

screen_shot_2013-02-26_at_4.00.22_pm.png

A smartphone with two screens? Yep, it does exist. And Aloysius Low, a Senior Editor for CNET Asia, got to spend some time with the quirky device. He tweeted about his experience with the NEC Medias W N-05E.

</fieldset>
<fieldset>

screen_shot_2013-02-25_at_1.17.20_pm.png

As the online communications hub for the global mobile industry, Mobile World Live was one of the first to tweet about the new 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note tablet. But so did Molly.

</fieldset>

Most people have had food poisoning at some point in their lives. Maybe that hamburger you ate last night was a little too rare or you missed the note that your favorite peanut butter is being recalled. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that one in six people in the US get sick every year from some foodborne illness. Medscape and the CDC took a look at what foods these sneaky bacteria and viruses were lurking in last year. Some of the biggest offenders might surprise you!

read more

The stomach flu, norovirus and your weapons against it

Every year 20 million Americans spend at least one horrendous night on the bathroom floor battling nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Call it what you want--food poisoning or the stomach flu--but your sickness may have been caused by the norovirus. For 1 in every 15 Americans this is true. Knowing how norovirus spreads and how you can avoid it can prevent anymore lonely nights spent with your head in the toilet.

read more

Kids and energy drinks: a potentially deadly mix

The family of reality-TV star and child beauty pageant competitor Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson definitely take the trophy when it comes to an unhealthy lifestyle. But, while the family's aversion to exercise and love of cheese balls might eventually lead to long-term health issues, one particularly unhealthy habit might land Honey Boo Boo in the emergency room as quick as she can wag her little finger.

Honey likes to perk up before pageants by drinking a mixture of Mountain Dew and Red Bull -- a potentially dangerous high-sugar, high-caffeine cocktail for anyone, much less a 7-year-old. Honey Boo Boo isn't alone when it comes to kids getting jacked up on energy drinks, a beverage category that continues to enjoy skyrocketing popularity. Several of her Toddlers & Tiaras co-stars (the reality show where Honey Boo Boo was "discovered") also pop energy drinks before their stage walks.
read more
