Speaking is one of the things I enjoy. I love to share the things that I have learned before a group of people. I love the interaction and the look on faces when they really grasp what I am trying to clarify. Good and helpful books on speaking are rare. Largely this has to do with the fact that we are talking about speaking and not about writing. I have been willing to go to the SCORRE conference for quite some time. The problem is that I am in Europe and the conference is in the US. In fact going to the conference is on my Someday / Maybe list. Now that I have read the book I understand even more why people are so excited about this conference.

When I heard about this new book by Ken Davis about communication and more specific about the SCORRE method also thaught at the SCORRE conference I was reluctant to pick it up. Because I couldn’t imagine that presenting a complete method for crafting a speech, lecture or any talk would fit in a book. Wrong!

The acronym SCORRE stands for Subject Central Theme Objective Rationale Resources Evaluation. It is the basis for developing any talk. It all starts with a subject that you need to narrow to a central theme. In one simple sentence (objective) you write down the very purpose of your talk. To make the talk really powerful you need a logical framework (rationale) and resources to bring light, color and clarity to the talk. Evaluation means that throughout the proces you need to constantly evaluate to make sure you are on the right track.

Ken Davis has succeeded in writing a practical, fun to read book on communication. It provides clear steps from start to beginning for crafting and delivering talks. It has helped me take my public speaking to the next level.

This book provides you with:
– A solid methodological approach to prepare and deliver talks;
– Practical steps to take to enhance your public speaking;
– Tips and tricks to help in the various stages of public speaking;

This book will stay on my iPad as an ebook. In reading it once I gained a better insight in what is at stake when you try to communicate something. Over time I will refer back to it for concrete helpful ideas and tips when I am preparing my next talk.

When I started in this book I couldn’t help but think that it was primarily targeted towards older people. After I finished the book I came to the conclusion that from my perspective that is the case.

I choose to read the book because of a visit that is planned to Charlotte, the hometown of Billy Graham. Over the years I have read and heard a lot of his life and achievements. Even though the book is written from his own perspective that he is nearing Home everyone can benefit from what is on the pages of this book.

I could sense the experience, the wisdom and the profound grace his speaking and writing has always been full of. Thinking about the end of your life is not something a lot of people like to do. In picking up this book and reading it you are faced with some of the tough and deep questions of life. Billy Graham has chosen to be open, frank and direct in this book. It is as the subtitle says a book about life, faith and finishing well. What struck me most is the amount of practical tips and advice in this book. And most of his advice isn’t only for elderly people. There is a truth for everyone:

Well, not all elderly people can climb behind the wheel of a dream car or get face-lifts, but we do have the choice to be content with where we are in life.

I guess that is something to think about!

				Let me begin by quoting from the book Michael Sliwinski and Augusto Pinaud wrote about their journey using only their iPad.

“The goal is to inspire you to challenge your habits, question your workflows and take a look at how you work on your computer from a different perspective.”

In short: the authors have succeeded in this goal. They have challenged my habits, questioned my workflow and they have given me an insight in working with the iPad that has proven valuable. Within days I experienced new ways to use the iPad. I have used the iPad since the day it became available. I have been thinking about trying an iPad only approach but wasn’t sure it would work out. After reading this book I will definitely try it for the next month.

After two 4 hours of working #iPadOnly I already have found a couple of tasks that I cannot do on the iPad. In my GTD system I have created a new context, @Macbook, for those tasks I need my MacBook Pro for. But several other tasks I considered not doable have been working out smoothly with less distraction.

If you want to get more out of your iPad this book is definitely worth reading. If you really want to try out the iPadOnly approach this book is a very good start. But just at the authors say you will need to figure out how your workflows work on the iPad. I really like the honest approach Michael and Augusto have chosen in writing this book. For some it may be too far fetched but they are hitting a nerve. I sure hope they will update the book regularly because they will find more uses for the #iPadOnly way of using your iPad. I think I will.

The link in the title of this post is to the Amazon Kindle version. If you want to buy the iPad iBooks version you may use this link.

I have to admit that I was a little hesitant reading this book. From what I had read about it on the internet the central theme revolves around dying. Not exactly a subject most people are willing to think about much. Luckily the book is small in size, around a 100 pages.

The book is an honest report of an experience the author, Robert D. Smith, had at the time he realized he already had lived 20,000 days. Counting your days instead of the years makes you rethink a lot of things in live. The book describes a process the reader can implement to make your days really count. Don't let the number of pages confuse you. In these pages are some very inspiring and deep thoughts.

Here are some quotes from the book:

     “You only can decide yes or no. How simple is that? But not always easy.

     “Become your own problem.”

     “Life is not about finding yourself; it is about creating yourself.”

Those quotes alone are worth reading again and again. If you want to confront yourself with some very important subjects to think about, this book is for you. It is very well written. It is easy to read but you will need time to digest the contents. And apply it to your life.

John Maxwell already has witten a ton of books about leadership. I have read quite a few of them already so I was curious to see how this book would be different. In one way it is different than some of his other books on leadership but in another way it is the same. Let me explain that.

In this book you will find a lot of material already covered in some of his other books but in a different context and for a different audience. The book is full of wisdom but always pratical so you can apply it directly. This book will help you regardless of your position to take control of your life and be a leader from the place your are right now. Even if you’re not in a formal leadership position. Every person is a leader of his or her own life. And that is where I think the book will bring leadership as a subject to a new and broader audience.

In short this book describes myths about leadership, the challenges of leadership from a new perspective (360º) and the principles to bring this 360º leadership paradigm into practice.

I found it hard to read it in one go. Mostly because of the density of the material and also because the book encourages you to reflect on your own behavior in many areas. So for me I think the book is more suitable to be picked up every now and then. Read a chapter and reflect and implement the info in your life.

Here is just a quick tip for users of the Mac version of Evernote (version 5.0 and above): they added two shortcut keys that have been on my wishlist for years.

Control – Command + M = Move a note to a notebook of choice. Pressing this key combo will give you a list of notebooks to choose from. There is also a small search box. So if you want to move a note to the General Reference notebook just start typing “Ge” in the search box and the General Reference notebook will be selected. Hit enter and the note will be moved to that notebook.

Command + J = Go to notebook. Brilliant for quick navigation to your notebooks. Even shared notebooks are included in the popup that shows up when you press this key combination. In this case the search box is also available.

Especially processing all new notes in the Default Notebook (In GTD terminology the Inbox) is much easier this way.

Just try it out and let me know if it works for you!

Some people think of Evernote as your external brain and in a sense this is true. Over the course of the last 4 years I have learned to use Evernote in more ways. It is far more than my external brain.

Getting Things Done setup

I have written on this blog about setting up Evernote for GTD. I still use it the same way as I did four years ago. In the GTD and Evernote users group I am still advocating using notebooks over tags for the different list in GTD. Also contexts have separate notebooks in my setup.

Others like Ruud Hein and The Secret Weapon are using a tag based system. My initial reason not going for this approach was the buggy implementation of tags in earlier versions of Evernote. And allthough those times are behind us I still kept away from tags for my GTD setup. The new reason for this is that I use tags as a way of implementing a rock solid A-Z reference file system in Evernote.

Filing is a problem

In my home office I do have a reference file system that is setup as David Allen describes in his book Getting Things Done, The Art of Stress-Free Productivuty. For those of you that have the book at hand: check page 96 evv. Ever since I started using GTD I have experienced the many great benefits of having a filing system that just works. I have one simple A-Z indexed set of folders. I can add new folders in under one minute and adding papers to existing folders is even quicker. I have a labeler within arm reach and plenty of fresh folders. Administrative tasks are done in a fraction of the time because everything is in place and easy accessible. I cannot imagine that I have lived without this simple setup. Filing is a problem for a lot of people.

In my own experience and in coaching people I have found that handling the digital realm is even a bigger struggle for a lot of people. Digital information tends to spread around hard drives, email programs and cloud services. And even though computers have strong searching capabilities the stress factor of not knowing where everything is bothers people. It did bother me.

Evernote as your digital archiving system

And in comes Evernote. I use the tag system in Evernote as my A-Z reference file archive. I can easily add physical paper to Evernote with my ScanSnap scanner, add all kinds of documents, emails, tweets, basically all digital info that enters my life. And is worth keeping. I use a tag as a hard copy file folder. And I already have many, many tags.

My first encounter with Andy Stanley was through his Podcast series called “Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast“. I listen to podcasts a lot during my commute to and from work. In one of those podcasts he spoke about the Principle of the Path and it struck a chord with me. So reading the book was a logical next step.
In his book Andy leads the readers by painting some powerful and not all that common stories from the Bible right to the wisdom of the Principle of the Path.

The key idea that I got from the book: Direction – not intention – determines your destination. And it’s a big one if you dare to consider it serioulsy enough as I did. People are full of good intentions but they will bring you nowhere. Only steps in the direction will get you somewhere. I am full of good intentions both in my personal as work life. It takes courage to take steps towards your goals in stead of sticking to the intentions you have.

This principle affects your health, finances, carreer, literally all aspects of life are affected. One of the thought provoking quotes from the book: “Submission – not talent, information, or insight – is the key to good decisions“. Ultimately in the view of Andy Stanley this means submission to the will of God. And allthough I agree with him on this point I dare to say that even for people who don’t believe in God or aren’t religious there is truth in what he says about good decisions.

It is foolish for a person to seriously believe that all knowledge is already in his posession. Good decisions are made when you have tapped into as much knowledge and advice you can get, and submit to it. Or, to willingly go in the direction that is pointed out by the combined information and knowledge you have gathered.

This book is not a book to be read once. It is a book you may need to reread every time you need some advice and direction, because a big decision is to be made. I do read it every know and then, just to stay focused in times of big decisions.
