Cell Phones and Lightnings

There is a myth going round saying that lightnings travel along the radio waves emitted by a mobile phone. A news report appeared in the New Straits Times, Kuala Lumpur on 17 July 2011, on a death caused by lightning that struck a boy using a mobile phone. The explanation given by an "electronic and communications engineer" was completely wrong. Read the article here.

I gave a clarification on the effects of lightning on mobile phones. The article was published on 29 July, 2011.

To be safe, do not use mobile phone whether indoors or outdoors. The chance of getting struck by lightning is greater outdoors, especially if you have a metallic or conductive object in your wet hands and body. Using a land line phone is also not advisable as an electric current can flow along the wires if struck by lightning.

Welcome to the RF and Microwave Engineering Course for the new semester.

Class starts on 27th December, 2007. Please check with my secretary for class schedules. She can be contacted at (07)453-7902 from outside the campus or just dial 7902 within the campus.

As usual, Sabirin will assist me throughout the course. In fact, he will stand in for me on the first day of class. The first class assignment will be explained by him on that day. All students are expected to adhere strictly to assignment schedules. Any assignments turned in late will not be accepted and you will get a ZERO (0). Please take note.

Prepare for the quiz this coming thursday. It will be at 3:00 pm at DK8.

Read up on transmission line theory with emphasis on input impedance with different loads, SWR, reflection coefficients, input impedance due to different line length. Try out the exercises at the end of the respective chapters in any of the reference text.

Second Assignment

Each one of you must prepare a powerpoint presentation on Microwave Tubes (klystrons, magnetrons, TWT, etc). Your PPT must include, at least, the following:

1. Introduction
2. History and development of microwave tubes (include inventors, designers, type of tubes, etc)
3. Basic theory related to the tube operation
4. Applications and limitations
5. References

You must also prepare a technical report (in Word file) based on the presentation. In other words, a technical paper on the subject. The title of the paper is left to your creativity.

Plagiarism and copying among yourselves are strictly prohibited. If I discover that you do that, you will fail instantly. Be forewarned.

I expect the PPT and paper to be e-mailed to me at my usual email address by 24th July, 2007.

The class did a good job in implementing 9 projects. Two students were assigned to a group and they had a free choice of topic for the project. They have to lay down the specifications (or scope of work), do a simulation or theoretical analysis, and finally implementation and testing. Except for two or three groups, everyone did fine.

Next time, I will list down the projects.

Although we have finished our microwave device modules, make sure you review all that we have done.

I hoped you studied during the long Maal Hijrah and Chinese New Year break.

Just to remind you that there will be a mid-sem exam and i will set 2 questions. One will be on tubes and the other on semiconductors. Each question consists of 2 parts. THe first part tests your understanding of the subject matter. The second part will test your ability to analyse or design.
