Recently there has been growing concern over nano particulate Titanium Dioxide in sunscreens and mineral make up. Nanoparticle ingredients are super small compounds measured in nanometers or billionths of a meter. As a comparison, a typical nanoparticle is approximately 10,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The size of nanoparticles is their greatest asset and their greatest health risk. The human body is equipped with defenses designed to keep toxic substances out as they come into contact with our skin, lungs, and intestinal tract, but nanoparticles are so small they can acutally move between the cells our body, entering the skin, and giving the toxins free access to our entire system.

Even non-toxic nanoparticles can cause problems, getting into our systems where they aren’t meant to be. For example they can get into our lungs but are so small they are not easily cleared by normal mechanisms. They get caught!

Two common sources of nanoparticles today are sunscreens and mineral make up.

Ironically, nanoparticles used in sunscreen came about because of an effort to avoid toxic materials. Reports of the dangerous effects of benzophenone, homosalate and octyl-methoxycinnamate that some sunscreens use caused many consumers to return to the old-school products containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

However, many people didn’t like how these white-tinted sunscreens looked and wanted something transparent. Manufacturers discovered that by dispersing the titanium dioxide as nanoparticles, it went on clear while still providing sun protection.

The use of nanoparticles in mineral make up was also an attempt to improve the appearance of the product. Pulverizing the minerals to nano-size gave the cosmetics a smoother, more glowing appearance. Consumers liked the change but didn’t realize there were associated possible health risks.

How Do You Avoid Nanoparticles?

Numerous research studies have showed the dangerous effects of nanoparticles and there is little doubt that they pose a significant health threat. A movement is underway to have the FDA regulate engineered nanoparticles much more rigorously. Until that time, consumers have to be smart shoppers.

When buying sunscreens that uses metal oxides or mineral make up, look for products that don’t use nanoparticles or “micronized” particles. “Non-Micronized” particles are larger than nanoparticles so are safer. Titanium dioxide particles can also be coated with stearic acid to further prevent interaction of the mineral with the body.

To Be on the safe side, stick with mineral make up that uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in a liquid or cream base, rather than powder form.

Like a liquid or cream to powder foundation instead of a loose powder form and mineral makeup in a base like cream blush and concealer.

This prevents the particles from being absorbed through the skin or becoming airborne and getting into the lungs. If you are concerned about the health risks of nanoparticles, consider using one of the many great choices in natural and organic cosmetics that allow you to look great without risking your health.

______________________________________________________________________________

Progress In Health will never use nano-particles in it’s formulations. All of our minerals are incorporated in a base of liquid or cream and are a safe and effective way of using mineral makeup. We use titanium dioxide that is coated with stearic acid, to further insure your safety and piece of mind. Your health and safety is a priority to us and we will continue to produce products that have the safest ingredients possible.

Millions of Americans are adversely affected each year by a silent from of chemical warfare that’s taking place every day within the comforts of our own homes.
Millions of Americans are adversely affected each year by a silent from of chemical warfare that’s taking place every day within the comforts of our own homes. While we worry about the chemical weaponry of terrorists and lead-contaminated imported toys, we are literally poisoning our immune systems with thousands of toxic chemicals that are known carcinogens, hormone disrupters, and cancer-causing agents.

It starts with your morning routine. If you are a man, you will probably use shampoo, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, hair gel or styling products, shaving cream, and aftershave or cologne. A typical day for a woman starts much the same, with the added possibilities of shower gel, body and face cream, lotion, moisturizer, make-up, hair spray, perfume, and nail polish. By the time you have made it to the door, you have swallowed, inhaled and absorbed through your skin hundreds of toxic chemicals, some of which have been proven to be deadly to laboratory animals and many of which are known to be carcinogens.

If you are suffering from dry flaky skin, persistent skin irritations, rashes, sinus problems, allergies, asthma, respiratory ailments and other health problems that never seem to get cured, it may be time for you to examine the negative effects your personal care products are having on your health. It’s great to exercise and watch what you eat, but you must also watch what you put on your body and even what you use to clean your house if you want to achieve optimal health.

Any substance you put on your skin, or inhale will enter your bloodstream just as surely as if you had swallowed it. Once these chemicals enter your bloodstream, they are perceived by your immune system as foreign and not recognizable, and they are perceived by your liver as toxins. When your immune system and liver are dealing with toxic chemical overload they aren’t available to do the jobs they were intended to do. That’s why people who insist on putting toxic chemicals into their bodies suffer from frequent bacterial and viral infections, other mysterious maladies, and even cancer.

Have you ever taken a close look at the ingredients in your personal care products? Whatever you are seeing probably includes water. Is there anything else on that label that you recognize as a naturally occurring substance you might actually want to put inside your body? If it doesn’t occur in nature, it shouldn’t be inside of you, because you are a natural being.

Kiss My Face Corporation makes a wonderful soap bar that lathers up and cleans just fine. The only ingredients on its label are olive oil, water and salt. There are no toxic chemicals or fragrance. That’s what a label should look like. How does the label on your soap look?

No matter what the advertisements try to make you think, fragrance does not come from flowers or anything else natural. More than 4,000 chemicals are used in fragrances, many of which are waste products from the petroleum industry. Several of them are known to cause cancer, birth defects, infertility, and brain and central nervous system damage including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s.

Since so many products are now scented, the number of people who are made ill by fragrances is steadily increasing. Babies and children are especially vulnerable along with those recovering from illness or disease. Chemical fragrances are everywhere: laundry detergent, fabric softeners, dish washing liquids, suntan products, sunscreen, incense, lotions, moisturizers, lip balms, almost every personal care product, and more. It’s even found in many products labeled as unscented because it is contained within a compound when that compound is added to the product.

Exposure to scented products can cause the persistent symptoms that mystify people, such as chronic aches and pains, headaches, allergies, swollen glands and lymph tenderness, heart palpitations, memory, fatigue, asthma, nausea, and neural-motor functioning including dizziness, and fainting. Exposure in children and even adults can cause learning and behavioral problems, attention deficit and hyperactivity in addition to any of the other symptoms. Continued exposure to chemical fragrances along with other toxic chemicals can cause development of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Disease. When you have this disease, the slightest whiff of a toxic chemical makes you so ill you cannot function. Your ability to interact with the rest of the world is seriously compromised.

It’s tempting to say to your self that these products must be alright or the ‘government’ wouldn’t let them be sold, but this isn’t true. The personal care products industry is not supervised. The FDA does not require manufacturers to register their products or to file safety data on the ingredients they use in them. They are free to put in as many toxic chemicals as they want. The only thing that stops them is reaction from the public. A few years ago, magazines came with scented strips advertising the latest perfumes. So many people were sickened and complained that the strips were discontinued. If enough people refuse to buy toxic products, manufacturers would stop making them.

Products you use while taking a shower are particularly dangerous since you are using them at a time when your pores are opened by hot water, allowing quick and easy access to your bloodstream. A look at the ingredients in your shampoo may be shocking. There are more than 100 toxic chemicals traditionally used in shampoo, and most brands contain 20 to 30 of them in addition to chemical fragrance and dyes.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a dominant ingredient in almost all shampoos. In addition to its toxic effects on your immune and detoxification systems, SLS has been shown to corrode the hair follicles and impede hair growth. It has been blamed for premature hair loss. The Material Safety Data Sheet provided by the U.S. government says exposure to SLS can lead to burning, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. The American College of Toxicology says that SLS stays in the body for up to five days and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.

While there are many natural alternative substances available that will clean and beautify you far better than these toxic concoctions, the large corporations that produce personal care products won’t use them because it would cost too much money and interfere with their profits. They even try to disguise their cheap chemicals with tiny amounts of natural ingredients that are prominently featured on the front of the bottle. This is done to deceive you into buying what you think is an item that promotes health. But turn the bottle over and you will see a mind boggling list of toxic ingredients.

If you have decided that you don’t want to pay your hard earned money to a corporation that strives to deceive you and tell you lies, you will find that discovering how to replace your toxic products with products that promote good health is a very difficult task. No matter what it says on the label, there are virtuallyNoproducts in any of the discount stores, traditional supermarkets, or drugstores that are not filled with health compromising chemicals.

You will have a better chance of finding products that promote health at a health food market. But even there, you can’t just walk in and buy what appeals to you on sight. Many products marketed as ‘natural’ contain high levels of toxic ingredients. Whole Foods Market publishes a list of ingredients not allowed in the foods they sell, but many of these ingredients are contained in their personal care items. Apparently it is alright with them if the toxins enter you body through your skin instead of your mouth.

When you try to replace your personal care products with ones that promote health, you will find that almost every item you pick lists ingredients that sounds like chemicals. The only way to be sure of what you are buying is to research these ingredients. Here is a website where you can easily research many of these ingredients using their search box: (http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/) .

Many people have found that the easiest and most cost effective way to shop for health promoting products is online using one of the large supplement companies such as Lucky Vitamin or Vitacost. Each of these carries an amazing array of the personal care and cosmetic products typically found in health food stores.

Cosmetics made entirely from minerals are gaining in popularity as witnessed by the astounding growth in Bare Essential shops. Mineral cosmetics provide the affects of traditional cosmetics and don’t contain toxic chemicals. There are several other companies that sell cosmetics made from minerals. Their products are available at health food stores and online.

It’s not easy to make the change from disease promoting personal care products to those promoting health. It seems to require some trial and error, a lot of time to do research, patience, and a commitment to paying higher prices for the products you use. But once the change is made and these products become as familiar to you as the ones you used to buy, it will be easy from that point on. You will realize that you have made a significant investment in your future health and freedom from disease, and you will feel proud of yourself. You will know that it’s all a matter of priorities.

After you have found products in every category that you really like and seen how good you feel using them, you probably won’t even consider returning to the old brands. You will feel good about spending your money on products made by a company who knows its future rests in producing products that keep you healthy, rather that a corporation that sees you only as someone to be exploited. And you may realize that looking your best can be achieved only with the vibrant glow of good health shining from your insides out.

A new report published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) highlights some of the worst cosmetic products that cause harmful side effects. Among the most damaging are permanent hair dyes, facial and body moisturizers, cleansers, and even sunscreens, all of which are used by a significant portion of the overall population. And cases of severe reactions from such everyday-use products are widespread, say researchers.

Among the most damaging are permanent hair dyes, facial and body moisturizers, cleansers, and even sunscreens, all of which are used by a significant portion of the overall population. And cases of severe reactions from such everyday-use products are widespread, say researchers.

Cosmetics, of course, imply much more than just make-up for women. Hair gels, toothpastes, mouthwashes, skincreams, body sprays, moisturizers, deodorants, and pretty much anything else a person applies to skin orhairis considered a cosmetic product. In other words, virtually every human being uses some kind of cosmetic product every single day.

According to the report, entitledNational Register of Adverse Effects from Cosmetic Products 2008-2010, roughly 12 percent of survey respondents indicated that they experienced “very unpleasant adverse effects” as a result of applying common, conventionalcosmetic productsto their skin and hair. Some of these effects were so severe that respondents indicated that they had to be hospitalized.

The overall worst offender was moisturizers, which represented nearly 58 percent of all adverse events reported. Sunscreens and tanningproductsranked second worse at 12.5 percent, and both cleansing products and hair dye products placed third and fourth at 9.2 percent and 6.6 percent respectively. Further down on the list were general hair care products, dental care products, and make-up.

The number one reported adverseeventfrom using cosmetic products included eczema and oedema, as well as blistering and/or stinging pain. Other negative effects included dermatitis, urticaria, acne, itching, and even anaphylactic shock. Swelling and allergic reactions were also common, likely due to the presence of harmful toxins in the cosmetic formulas.

“The Register gives us a better overview of the products that cause adverse effects, the type of adverse effect and who experiences them. Then we can make an assessment and even warn against the use of certain products,” said Berit Granum from the Division of Environmental Medicine at NIPH, concerning the report.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has also established a Cosmetics Database through which the public can freely access information about the ingredients used in cosmetic products. It is important to always be aware of what you are putting on your skin or ingesting in yourbody, and you can learn more about that here:

An analysis commissioned by the FDA of 400 popular lipstick products has alarmingly found at least some lead in every single product. The amount of lead found in 380 of the lipstick products tested was greater than the maximum 0.1 parts per million (ppm) allowed in candy bars – in some instances as much as 70 times greater. However, the FDA stated that it did not consider the lead content to represent any danger because lipstick is not intended to be ingested.
Apparently, the FDA chose to ignore the obvious fact that eating, kissing or drinking with lipstick can lead to ingestion of some of the lipstick.

Likewise, the FDA also chose to overlook the fact of how easily items are absorbed into the skin – which is why so many medications are applied transdermally in skin patches, creams and oils. One obvious example is the nicotine patch used to help wean smokers from cigarettes.

In recent years, health destroying toxins have been increasingly identified in beauty and body care products and reports of lead in lipstick date back to the 1990s. The recent FDA analysis is an expansion of a previous analysis performed in 2007 which was spurred on by testing performed by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics on 33 shades of red lipstick. The campaign found that 20 of the tested shades contained lead in excess of the maximum amount allowed in candy bars.

95percent of lipstick products tested had more lead content than is allowed in candy bars

In the initial 2007 analysis, the FDA tested the same 20 red shades of lipstick that the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found had lead in greater amounts than were allowed for candy bars. The FDA analysis found that 19 of the 20 exceeded the 0.1 ppm maximum limit for candy bars and the average lead content was found to be 1.07 ppm. The new expanded analysis confirmed the previous results, finding lead content in all 400 products tested with 380 of the products exceeding the limit for candy bars.

To put the two sets of analyses in perspective, both found lead in 100 percent of the products tested and 95 percent of the lipstick products lead content exceeded the maximum safe amount of lead allowed in candy bars.

The latest analysis reviewed top lipstick brands sold to children and adults alike and was performed by Frontier Global Sciences, Inc., a private laboratory based in Seattle, WA. The new analysis is due to be published in the May/June, 2012, issue of theJournal of Cosmetic Science. The 400 lipstick products were all purchased at retail stores between February and July 2010.

Of the 400 lipsticks tested, the top five offenders were:

1. Maybelline’s “Color Sensational 125 Pink Petal” at 7.19 ppm of lead.
2. L’Oreal’s “Colour Riche 410 Volcanic” at 7.00 ppm.
3. NARS’ “Semi-Matte 1005 Red Lizard” at 4.93 ppm.
4. Cover Girl Queen Collection’s “Vibrant Hues Color Q580 Ruby Remix” at 4.92 ppm.
5. NARS’ “Semi-Matte 1009 Funny Face” at 4.89 ppm.

The full list of lipsticks tested and manufacturers can be viewed at:

http://www.fda.gov

Though the FDA maintains that the amounts of lead found are not dangerous, their site does note “Although we do not believe that the lead content found in our recent lipstick analyses poses a safety concern, we are evaluating whether there may be a need to recommend an upper limit for lead in lipstick in order to further protect the health and welfare of consumers.”

Hello Everyone,

The following new products are being added to:

ERZULIE® ALL NATURAL COSMETICS

1. Organic Facial Serum: Repair, Replenish and Restore with Argan Oil and Beneficial Organic Oils Dry, Mature, Sensitive and Normal Skin

This is a replenishing serum that’s light and absorbs instantly. It’s formulated with all natural and organic ingredients that are designed to yield results and your face will love it! The results will leave you will soft, healthy and glowing skin.
No need to spend a ton of your hard earned cash to get your skin looking great.
Those of you who have tried my skin care know that my products are results orientated.

This Facial Serum is great to use am and pm and can also be used for dry hands and feet.
That’s right it’s a multitasker. Add a few pumps to your daily moisturizer and you will have hydrated skin that is noursihed instantly. It’s liquid Gold!

Apply a small amount to face daily/nightly
Perfect for damaged, normal, sensitive, dry and mature skin types.
Non-comedogenic Vegan and paraben Free

*Argan Oil from a women’s Moroccan co-op, is a wrinkle reducer and antioxidant. Great for acne, rosacea, ecxema and psoriasis.Argan Oil is a rich source of nourishing skin food with an amazingly diverse range of benefits to the skin. With a wide-range of anti-aging properties shown to decrease wrinkles, and tighten skin. Rich in antioxidants, and ultra-hydrating it penetrates quickly, restoring skin almost immediately.
•Reduces wrinkles, tightens, and softens skin
•Possesses a sebum-regulating action for oily skin
•Significantly hydrates by restoring a natural barrier & neutralizing free-radicals

*Grapeseed Oil contains palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, as well as alpha linolenic, icosanoic, icosenoic and docosanoic fatty acids. Linoleic acid is very important for the health of the skin as well as cell membranes.
Grape seed contains proanthocyanidins, which are very potent antioxidants; helpful for diminishing the sun’s damaging effects and lessening free radical damage. Proanthocyanidins are also helpful in wound healing. Loaded with anti-oxidants and great for all skin types. It leaves skin feeling moisturized while protecting it. Penetrates deep into layers of dermis.

*Olive oil is high in antioxidants, including vitamin E. Antioxidants are nutritional powerhouses that protect against age-accelerating free radicals. The oil of this miraculous fruit will guard your body and your skin.
•Help maintain elasticity of skin
•Heal dry, brittle nails and soften cuticles

*Jojoba Oil is the oil that is most chemically similar to our own moisturizing sebum, it penetrates the skin well and leaves no oily residue. Because of its antioxidant activity, vitamin e is vital in protecting skin cells from ultra violet light, pollution, drugs, and other elements that produce cell damaging free radicals. It is believed that vitamin e is most effective in its natural alcohol form rather than its acetate form where it is a less effective antioxidant. Watch for this in the labelling of skin care products.
•vitamin e products help reduce the appearance of stretch marks
•vitamin e can help prevent the appearance of age spots
•it helps maintain the skin’s oil balance during the cleansing process
•it reduces transepidermal water loss from skin and strengthens the skin’s barrier function

*Sunflower oil has been used as an ingredient in cosmetic products for years. One of its main benefits as a skin care solution is its ability to help the skin retain moisture. Millions of people either apply it directly onto their skin, or use cosmetic products that contain sunflower oil, to avoid excess dryness. Of the 3 types, only high oleic oil can be used effectively in cosmetic formulations that sit on store shelves. Linoleic oil and NuSun lack the necessary shelf life to be used in most skin care products.

* Lavender Essential Oil The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is used to treat various skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles, psoriasis, and other inflammations. It heals wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns rapidly as it aids in the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil is added to chamomile to treat eczema.

Companies don’t have to disclose the actual components of each fragrance, under the guise that their fragrances are trade secrets. Fragrance has been known to cause many side effects, including headaches and allergic reactions. Why put an unknown synthetic chemical on your skin when you don’t have to? 2. Methylparaben, or anything ending in “paraben.” These preservatives act like estrogen in the body, throwing off hormonal balance. Parabens have been shown to accumulate in cancerous breast tumors.

3. Tetrasodium EDTA is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning it breaks down the skin’s protective barrier, going right into your bloodstream. Many companies trying to be “natural” will use Tetrasodium EDTA instead of parabens to preserve their products. Tetrasodium EDTA is just as bad as parabens.

4. Diazolidinyl Urea readily breaks down in the product or on the skin and releases formaldehyde. It’s an endocrine disruptor, a possible neurotoxin, a known immune system toxicant, and has a possible link to cancer. Even supposedly natural companies such as Shikai and Blue Lizard use this ingredient. I have seen some store on Etsy claim their products are organic and have this ingredient in them.

5. Propelyne Glycol, Found in your car, that green substance better known as anti-freeze, among other things, is a penetration enhancer, meaning it’s a carrier for other chemicals, bringing them into your skin and your bloodstream. It’s a known skin irritant, it has been shown to cause cancer in lab tests, a possible endocrine disruptor, and a possible neurotoxin. You can find it in over 3000 products, including lotions, deodorants, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner and body washes.

6. Phenoxyethanol in also a glycol, Phenoxyethanol breaks down to phenol and acetaldehyde, acetaldehyde converts to acetate. Phenol can disable the immune system’s primary response mechanism. Given that, it is at best ironic, that phenoxyethanol is used as an anti-bacterial in vaccines. It only recently came to public attention in the US when the FDA issued a warning about its use in a cream, called Mommy Bliss, for nursing mothers. The FDA warned that phenoxyethanol can cause shut down of the central nervous system, vomiting and contact dermatitis. In baby lotions and so called natural cosmetics.

I have seen many things written regarding the concerns and information being shared about Emulsifying Wax or Ewax as we formulators like to call it. Let me begin by saying that they’re not derived and processed all the same. As a company based on good will with it’s customers and innovative by necessity, Progress In Health, Inc. only uses Vegetable Emulsifying wax derived from plant leaves and shrubs (organic when possible) and minimally processed with Cetearyl alcohol, a blend of fatty acids made from vegetable sources as well, like palm and coconut oils . Not to be confused with it’s synthetic counterpart.
There are several cheaper versions that are available, and although they rank low to medium on the toxicity list, we have opted to use the most natural one available as of date.
Our Vegetable Emulsifying Wax never contains these ingredients:

PEG-150 Stearate
Steareth-20
