Third year industrial design student from Stuttgart’s Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Kunste has created the unusual LED-powered desk lamp. He used iconic Anglepoise lamp and flipped it upside down, using what is traditionally considered the lampshade as a stand.

Court Circuit Lamps by Matali Crasset

French designer Matali Crasset have created a collection of LED powered lamps called ‘Court Circuit’ for Italian company Danese Milano. Court Circuit lamps do some uncommon interpretation of the materiality connected with LED. The Court Circuit lamps are available in a pendant suspension light and a wall light versions.

“Designing LED light fixtures requires a different approach: it is not like designing fittings with incandescent sources and mechanic compo- nents as a do-it-yourself project. It is not a matter of adding components but interpreting and expanding new materials’ potentialities. The printed circuit boards are designed and implemented intelligently if you consi- der their complexity. Their integrated technology can be compared to the sophistication of human body where all parts and functionalities are interconnected.”

Inhale and Press Lamps by Nendo for Lasvit

Japanese design studio Nendo has created two hand-blown glass lamps called ‘Inhale’ and ‘Press’. Both lamp are made in collaboration with Czech glassmakers Lasvit.

“The Inhale lamp was formed by blowing glass into the form of an air bubble then sucking the air away. Ordinarily, glass is made by blowing air into the molten material. The inhale lamp, on the other hand, comes from the act of exhaling. It’s a form created by negative air pressure.

The glass tubes in the Press pendant and floor lamp are pressed as though they have been pinched, and the light source wedged into the narrowed space that results. The lack of metal and the soft form created naturally as the glass is compressed are the unique points of the lamp.”

Korean designer Seung Yong Song has created the collection of furniture and lighting called ‘Dami’ (Korean verb that means ‘put in’).

“Dami series are consist of basket forms and covers and available for different and various usage depending on form and size. It shows visual beauty as well as the structure of Korean traditional grille which has light and sturdy durability, and the combination of new eco-friendly materials called Valchromat and CNC processing technique make it possible to materialize modern objet with traditional beauty.”

XZ Deck Chair by Numen

Croatian-Austrian design collective Numen has created the XZ – a traditional deck-chair that is extended with a removable sunshade.

“The construction of the sunshade is a wooden frame similar to the frame of back legs, resulting in a strong X form when the sunshade is open. The weight of the wooden cylinder is pulling the fabric of the sun-shade to the ground when the user pushes the sunshade frame backwards. Two “pockets” are stitched on the fabric stripe at the position of the rest of the user’s head and under the seat. The wooden construction is made of Acacia wood treated with natural oils and the fabric stripe is made of heavy duty impregnated cotton textile.”

Lace Metal Lamp by Form Us With Love for Cappellini

Stockholm-based design studio Form Us With Love has created the Lace Metal floor lamp with gradient sized holes for Italian brand Cappellini.

“The idea behind the Lace Metal lamp came while visiting one of the oldest metal working factory in Sweden. When Fuwl visited them, they had just came up with a new technique of manufacturing steel mesh with gradient sized holes. This struck them as very poetic, resembling textile or lace. They immediately felt the desire to make a lamp with this material, since it has great characteristics as a lampshade as small holes that cover the light source, gradually get bigger to diffuse the light in a beautiful way. The result is a lamp made out of metal that has a look of lightness and fragility, a very nice contrast: the gradient holes add to this feeling diffusing the light in an atmospheric way.”
