Manually backup and restore your selective data from iPhone or iPod using DiskAid

When you update your iPhone or iPod, you loose all of your data, You can backup all of your data which iTunes automatically creates fro you when you sync your iDevice with iTunes. But I recommend you to use your updated and jailbroken iPhone or iPod as new to have faster device, less battery drainage and many other benefits. But in this way you will loose your important data all messages, contacts, notes and calenders. So I'll tell you how to manually backup your contacts, calenders, notes, messages etc.

Download this utility DiskAid.

Connect your iDevice with PC.

Launch DiskAid. Select Root Folder as shown in this picture.

Now to back up your data do the following.

For Contacts:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook
Save both files (AddressBook.sqlitedb and AddressBookImages.sqlitedb)

To save a file on your computer, right click on that file and click on Copy to PC, then select where you want to save.

For Messages:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS
Save sms.db on you computer

For Notes:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Notes
Save notes.db on your computer

For Calendar:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Calendar
Save Calendar.db on your computer

For Call History:

Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/CallHistory
Save call_history.db to your computer

When you want to restore your data after updating and jailbraking, navigate to respective folders and replace those files you already saved earlier. To copy files on your iPhone Launch DiskAid and select the target directory then click on Copy Files to Device and select file you want to copy.

Now check your iPhone or iPod, yeah, you have manually back up your data.

Sync 2 or more folders using Horodruin

Sometimes you need to keep two folder synced. Horodruin is a small free utility which lets you keep 2 or more folders perfectly synced.

1- Launch Horodruin and select 2 or more folders which you want to be synced. Add new folders by clicking on the small + icon.

2- When you have added the folders you need to analyze sources, click on Analyze Sources button.

3- Now finally click on Syncronize Sources button,

and now will have perfectly synced folders.

View the contents of an archive before downloading

Many times when we download a compressed file (and most of the time the downloaded files are compressed) we didn't wanted that actually. Also you can download the indvidual files from the archive. Now no need to download the whole archive, just download the files you need from the whole archive.

Hide any File inside an Image file-Windows XP Vista and Windows 7

You might know some ways to hide your files and folders, but today I will show you a method by which you can hide you personal and secret files inside your image files. How cool is that? Now you can hide all kind of files (.exe, .mp3, .pdf, txt, literally any) inside any of your image file.

Follow these steps to hide your file in image files.

1- Make compressed file of your files which you want to hide.

To do that elect all files, right click on them and click on Add to archive

(RAR file is preferable). You need WinZip or WinRar or any other compression tool to do that. Name the archive whatever you want, and click OK

and your rar file will be created.

2- Place that .rar and the image file in which you want to hide files in the same folder. I placed them in C:\Hidden

3- Now open cmd (to open cmd Press Windows key + R on your keyboard, type cmd and press Enter) and navigate to the folder where you have placed your .rar file and the image.

4- Now type copy /b {your image name with extension} + {your .rar file name with extension} {your image name with extension} and press Enter. See image below.

Thats it you rar file has been hidden in your image file. You will note that the file size of that image file has been changed.

5- Now there are two ways to access you files from that image file.

i - Right click on the image hover on open with and click on WinRAR. Sure enough, there resides your hidden files.

ii - Make sure you can change the extension of files by renaming them by opening the Folder Option from Control Panel and making sure that Hide Extensions for known file types is unchecked.

Now rename your files to {your file name}.rar, now double click the file to view your hidden files.

Ever wanted to close all windows with just a single click. This small and portable utility by ntwind allows you to close all the opened windows at once. This is particularly useful when you need to shutdown your computer and you are running 30+ windows, instead to closing all windows one by one, you can simply click it once.

Use Keyboard as Mouse

When your mouse is not working properly and unlickily you dont have any spare, you can use you keyboard as mouse. Press Left Alt + Left Shift + NumLock and then press Enter on your keyboard.

Now use your Numerical pad for controlling the mouse pointer. Use 5 for click, + for double click and - for right click. Press NumLock again to disable this functionality. (you Numerical pad might be disabled after that Press Left Alt + Left Shift + NumLoack again to enable your Numerical Pad)

Use on-screen Keyboard

If your keyboard isnt working properly and you need to type something urget, then you can use on screen keyboard, which is the built in virtual keyboard of the Windows. To use it click on Start button and click on Start button => Accessories => Ease of Access => On-Screen Keyboard.

Now you can use the virtual keyboard by clicking with mouse.

Dropresize is a freeware specially useful for bloggers, who upload images to their blogs alot. Now instead of opening each image and then resizing it, you can simply drop that image in a defined folder, and dropresizer will automatically resize it to your requirement, all in background.

This application runs in the system tray and monitors a folder, and any image that you drop in that folder will be resized according to your specifications.

1- Download this utility and launch it.

2- Click on Browse and select the folder which you want dropresize to watch, and specify the Resize Settings.

You have 2 options, adjust to height or adjust to width. Clcik OK. Now drop any image in that folder which you want to resize.

Disadvantages:

- Only jpeg images are supported.

- It does not keep backup of the images resized, so be careful when dropping images to that folder.

How to know when did your computer was shut down last time

Do you want to know when did your computer shut down last time? You can use Event viewer in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows XP.

1- On Winsows 7 and Vista Click start icon and type Event Viewer, now click on Event Viewer

On XP press Windows key + R and type eventvwr.msc and click on OK.

2- Now click on Windows Logs, then double click on System. ( On XP simply click on System on the left pane)

After some times all recent events occured on your system will be appeared in descending order w.r.t. time.

3- Now locate the 13 (On Vista and XP it is 6006) under Event ID (13 is event id for shut down), note the corresponding time for that event. This is the time when your computer shut off last time. From the following image you can see that 2:50:19 AM on 2/13/2010 was the last time my PC was shut down.

How to change the default directory of desktop wallpapers in Windows XP

If you want to change the default folder to choose your desktop background image from, there a a registry hack which enables you to do that.

Before proceeding I highly recommend you to make a backup of your registry, click here to learn how to backup your registry of Windows XP, Vista and 7. Now follow these steps.

1- Open registry editor (Press Windows key + R on your keyboard, then type regedit and press OK) Find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion In the left pane

2- Double-click on WallPaperDir (In case it does not exist, create a dWord value) In the Value field type (or paste) the path to folder of your choice (for example: “C:\My Files/My Pictures“) Press OK and Close the Registry Editor

3- Restart your computer in order to make changes take effect.

How to backup and restore you Windows XP-Vista and 7 registry

Before any modification in the registry of windows, it is advised to make a back up of your Windows registry in case of any mishap.

To make a backup of your registry

Windows 7/Vista

1- Click Start type systempropertiesprotection and press Enter. Enter administrator password if asked.

Alternatively right click on Computer and click on Properties

then click on System Protection.

2- Now wait for Windows to search for available disks and the most recent restore points. Click on Create.

Type a name for restore point and click Create.

After that click on OK.

Windows XP

1- Press Windows key+R, now type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and click OK

2- When the welcome screen loads, click on Create a restore point, now click Next.

3- On this page type a name for the restore point and click Create.

Now click Close.

How to Restore

If your system refuses to boot in a normal mode, you can always start it in safe mode. To start your computer in safe mode press F8 at start up (before windows boot) then you will be presented with boot options for Windows, here you can select safe mode.

Windows 7/Vista

1- Click Start type systempropertiesprotection and press Enter.Enter administrator password if asked. Alternatively right click on Computer and click on Properties, then click on System Protection.Now wait for Windows to search for available disks and the most recent restore points. Now click on System Restore.

2- In the system restore dialog box, select choose a different restore point.and click Next. Click on Confirm and then click Finish System Restore, Windows will provide you with recommended restore point

Select Choose a different restore point if you want to and click next (select you desired restore if your have chosen 2nd option in the previous screen), now click Finish, this will restore the selected Windows 7/Vista Configuration. After the restart click OK, when System restore confirmation page appears.

Windows XP

1- Press Windows key+R, now type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and click OK

2- When the welcome screen loads, click on Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next. Here you will be presented with calender like view, here you can select a date and choose the restore you have created manually or automatically. Dates with a system restore are bold.

Now click Next Click OK on the if a message appears.

Now the system restore will restore the Windows XP to the previous Windows XP configuration and restarts the computer. When the computer restarts, clock OK on the System Restore confirmation page.

How to set a different wallpaper on each display using DisplayFusion in a multiple monitor setup

Now adays use of multiple monitors is getting more frequent. After setting up dual monitors the first thing you will hate about it is that there would be same desktop wallpapers for each monitor, and your Windows dont allow you natively to set a different wallpapers for each monitor. DisplayFusion is a small utility which enables you to set different wallpapers for each of your displaying monitors.

Now launch DisplayFusion.

In the notification area you will see DisplayFusion icon, right click on it, then click Desktop Wallpaper.

On this screen you'll have the option to use a background image which spans across all monitors or to choose different image for each monitor.

You can select any image from your computer or Flickr web album. Click on Load From and select any option.After choosing images click Apply to apply all settings.

Using DisplayFusion you can set many hotkeys as you please.

There also are some more settings, play with them to get the best results, some are only for Pro version. Here is my Dual Display setup.
