If you're a high velocity person, having shoe laces coming undone is an inconvenience at best. If you work in active environments like hospitality, it can be hazardardess. In this brief TED Video, Terry Moore shares a simple little tweak that turns a weak knot into a strong one.

More on Measuring - Use the Right Ruler

Yesterday we talked about getting our arms around a big vision by eating an elephant one bite at a time: breaking down the incompletable into smaller goals. We defined Strength as our ability to carry out an action, and Resistance as the force opposing our action, the amount of inertia to overcome in order to conclude the Performance. Our final conclusion was that Excellence is achieved by eating elephant every day -- consistently exercising Strength and therefore increasing our capability.
Today, I want to go more in depth into some of the specifics pitfalls and benefits of measuring results.
We noted two ways to set goal markers:
* Immediate -- Distance Achieved: Affecting any set number of empirical units -- empirical means a measurement derived from experiment and observation rather than theory. It's the difference between "Did we sell a lot?" and "We posted a first-quarter operating profit of 1.90 billion euros. " The point isn't precision -- don't get more caught up in measuring the thing "the right way" over completing the action. The point is to make the purpose of your immediate effort the production of a measurable quantity, rather then an opinion subject to the pleasing or displeasing of your personal ego. It doesn't matter how you feel about what you wrote -- it matters that you wrote then ten pages you set out to write.
* Comparative -- Distance over Time : How long does it take us to affect those units? How often can we do it? This is where we calculate cost / performance. Comparing the result over time let's us see improvement -- it makes us aware of the reward of our efforts. And that is very important. Humans are bred for survival, so if we don't experience a short-term gain in some way followed by sustainable results, we lose interest. Everything in our brain screams at us to quit. We call this being lazy or unmotivated, but really, it's just our survival sense kicking in because it FEELS like we're wasting effort, and in days not so long ago, wasting energy meant death.
Our choice of measurement makes all the difference. Choose the indicator that relates most signifacantly to the action you are engaged in. For instance, most people use body weight to evaluate their personal health efforts, even though body weight fluctuates wildly and unpredictably daily, monthly and seasonally for reasons having nothing to do with diet or exercise. Calorie counting isn't any better for understanding the impact of diet choices. The stats that matter are body fat percentage and blood pressure. In terms of short term success, what you want to know is that you eat an amount you are happy with at each meal, which can be achieved by simply taking a picture of every meal you eat. For exercise track improvement in performance -- when you run a mile in 8 minutes instead of 9, your short-term sense of accomplishment is through the roof, even if your stomach feels somewhere around your knees. Track stats that are both simple and significant.
Now that we've gone over how to define the elephant in detail, tomorrow we'll take a look at providing the first thing we need if were going to be having elephants around -- lots of dedicated space.

Eating Elephant Every Day

There's a bit of wisdom that asks "How do you eat an elephant?" In other words, how do you achieve something that's too big for you?
First, we need to understand how big the thing is, and how big a thing we can eat. We need to define and measure. Strength is our ability to achieve a desired result, and Resistance is what opposes us: the inertia to overcome. Can we lift 300 pounds on a leg press machine? Pay off a $23,200 student loan debt? Send 1.21 Gigawatts into the Flux Capacitor? Defining the question with empirical measurements and a specific goal marker let's us know where we stand -- when you see a pair of tire tracks burning in the street, it's time to shout and do a victory dance.
But back to the question of elephant on the menu. If can't muscle our way past the Resistance in one sitting, we can use our measurements to break it down. We eat the elephant one bite at a time. Break the unachievable result down into a one-time result that you can achieve, and measure as above in terms of Resistance. Then set a schedule to repeat this result, and overcome additional resistance as you are able.
Now we are measuring Time over Distance: If you can swing $6,000 a year, you'll have that student loan debt paid off in four years. Better yet, you'll have a consistent habit of setting aside $500 a month. Continue to do so, and in another four years you'll have SAVED $24,000. This simple calculation doesn't count interest paid on the loan or gained from savings or investing. But we can all agree positive personal net worth is better then a negative one.
Which brings us to Excellence. Strength wanes without use. That 300 pound leg press you maxed at the gym last week? If you don't go this week, you'll only hit 280 next week. If you want to lift 400 pounds, keep going to the gym every week and keep adding weight as you are able. Strength grows with proper use -- the more Resistance you move, the more your capacity to move Resistance grows.
Strength is eating an elephant. Excellence is eating elephant every day.

You may or may not be the most important person in your life, but you are the most influential.
No-one's decisions have a greater impact on your life then your own. Take time to influence yourself. Quality one-on-one time.
A simple approach to self-influence is the coffee date. Sit with a cup of coffee or tea for fifteen minutes, the same as if you are meeting a friend at the corner cafe, and tell yourself good things. You don't have to go to the corner cafe, but you can. You don't need an agenda or anything specific to talk about, but you can do that too. You don't have to talk to yourself -- and if you do go to the corner cafe, you probably shouldn't -- just share with yourself.
Free-writing in a journal is socially acceptable. What makes you excited today? Uncertain? What saddens you? What are you proud of? Journally comes bundled with an added bonus: you can review. See where you were a week, a month, a year ago. Patterns will emerge.
Admit you mistakes. Admit your triumphs. Encourage and embolden yourself. The same as if you are with a friend.

Because you are.

iPhone secretly logs your whereabouts

Researchers have discovered a secret database within iOS that store records of an iPhone user's location. Although this information is not transmitted to Apple, it is accessible through back-up files stored on a user's computer in iTunes. The database is unencrytped.

"Alasdair Allan, senior research fellow in astronomy at the University of Exeter, and writer Pete Warden, who discovered the log file and created a tool that lets users see a visualization of that data, say there's no evidence of that information being sent to Apple or anybody else. Even so, the pair note that the data is unencrypted, giving anyone with access to your phone or computer where backups may be stored a way to grab the data and extrapolate a person's whereabouts and routines."

Allan and Warden have made an open-source visualization program available for viewing location data stored in an iPhone or iTunes backup file -- however in the same manner that civilian GPS data is purposefully not as accurate as military data, the two researchers deliberately downgraded the accuracy of their program.

Although the database itself is unencrypted, iTunes does have an option to encrypt back-up files:

"To enable that feature, click on the device icon when it's plugged into iTunes, then check the 'Encrypt iPhone Backup' item in the 'Options' area. As for your iPhone, or iPad with 3G, your best bet is to keep someone else from getting it in the first place, and then using Apple's free 'Find My iPhone' app to do a remote wipe if it's lost or stolen."

Apple can collect this information legally according to the iTunes Terms and Conditions.

For a concise FAQ explaining the issues, check out the full story at CNET.

Auren Hoffman at Summation posted his research into vitamin supplements. His conclusion? All you really need is two bottles: a decent multi and fish oil.

You might want to add a third bottle: 500mg of magnesium taken a half hour before bed improves sleep according to Tim Ferriss in The Four Hour Body (pg. 81).

I personally use a combo calcium / magnesium supplement, as the 200mg or so of calcium in a typical multi is far short of the 1000mg I need as an endurance athlete.

Prescient Observations:

"Certain job and career choices are fundamentally incompatible with being meaningfully engaged on a day-to-day basis with a young family."

"If you don't design your life, someone else will design it for you, and you may just not like their idea of balance."

"The small things matter. Being more balanced doesn't mean dramatic upheaval in your life. With the smallest investment in the right places, you can radically transform the quality of your relationships and the quality of your life."

Dr. Viktor Frankl on Pragmatic Idealism

In this video published by Ted.com, the great thinker and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl addresses a group of students in Toronto in 1972 on how our own expectations influence the realization of the hidden potential of our fellow men and women.

Paraphases a quote from the philosopher Goethe and using an example from his flight instructor, Frankl calls on all of us to expect more from others than they deserve.

Frankl's speech highlights the fact that respect is granted, not necessarily earned. It can be earned, but there are plenty of people with authority who don't receive respect.

Just ask any cop.

Session Hijacking: How hard is it? Three clicks.

In this video, Paul Colligan introduces us to Firesheep, a Firefox plugin that allows ANYONE to login to other folks web service accounts -- like Facebook and Twitter -- accessed over unsecure WiFi. You know, like the free WiFi at the coffee shop? Yeah...

Firesheep was actually created as part of a White Hat effort by developer Eric Butler. The idea is to spur users into securing their WiFi by demonstrating how very very easy it is for hackers to hijack an unencrypted session, and to encourage web service developers to provide secure login protocols. Mr. Butler's strategy is proving successful, as Firesheep's been garnering a lot of talk on the web. Facebooks rollout of secure browsing via HTTPS is in part a response to Firesheep.

Do yourself a favor and get a secure Wi-Fi utility like HotSpot Shield (Free, but ad supported) or WiTopia (Secure VPN service starting at $40/month -- works on tablets and smartphones as well as laptops).

Facebook is the world's largest social network, receiving 134 million unique visitors in December 2010 alone. It is second only to Google as the most visited site on the Internet.

Its also big business with projected ad revenues of $1.2 billion in 2010.

Unfortunately this makes it a target for password-stealing hackers looking to sell access to personal accounts to spammers.

If you haven't been hacked before yourself, you've probably experienced it happening to one of your Facebook friends. A random, usually vague message will be posted to your wall urging you to click on a cryptic link or add an "amazing" app.

Facebook has added an option to enable HTTPS connections by default. Full instructions and video are available at Lifehacker, but the simplified version is:

> Account (top right)

> Account Settings

> Account Security

> click Change

> check the box at "Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible"

> click Save

Will this make your facebook account hacker-proof?

No.

But it will invoke the Law of the Serengeti: predators prefer the weak, expending less energy to make the same kill.

PC World reports the selling price for facebook accounts cracked in bulk "is $25 per 1000 accounts with ten friends or less, and $45 per 1,000 for those accounts with more than ten friends."

HTTPS means an extra layer of security to crack: more effort for the same reward as an unsecure HTTP account. So cracking an HTTPS enabled account isn't really worth the time in the Black Hat economy.

So go check the box.

Caught Erwin McManus's latest talk on the book of Ecclesiastes at the Mosaic Westside gathering on Sunday. Erwin highlighted the notion that even a leading authority's opinion only matters in their area of expertise, an observation Sam Harris made during his presentation at Ted2010:

http://www.ted.com/talks/sam_harris_science_can_show_what_s_right.html

Erwin pointed out everyone must, at some point in their life, confront a sense of insignificance.

"Creative people all have one thing in common: we know we're faking it and are afraid people are going to find out." -- Disney Animator Glen Keane

Notes -- Seth Godin -- Brazen Careerist Webinar with Penelope Trunk

Being Indispensable

If you aren’t sold on Why, then whether it CAN be done or not is irrelevant.

We aren’t naturally primed to WANT to be Indispensable.

Necessity of Indispensable:

“If I can define your job in a manual, I can get someone else to do it cheaper.”

The Dip: The spot in between fresh and new and exciting, and mastery. The inbetween is the awareness that you suck at this.

The Dip is your friend — it is the barrier to entry that prevents everyone from being awesome at everything. B/c of the Dip, you can generate value by being great at what you do.
You get to pick how big a Dip you get to work with.
Picking your Dip is not difficult — others have gone before you. Look at their stories and anticipate what’s coming for you.
“I am going to make my career a series of Dips that I can manage.”
Managing the Dip = Lifestyle Choices

Linchpin: You are doing work that changes someone for the better.

Q. Trying to be the Linchpin w/o being in the Dip (b/c it’s awful).
A. “There’s a lot of people who say they do art, but actually what they do is put paint on canvas — they’re pretending.”
There’s a huge number of posers out there.

ref. Steve Pressfield
The Resistance: The voice of the lizard brain. Loves familiarity. Comes up with a million reasons to NOT produce change.

Don’t do two things at the same time. Circle a task and commit to it and do it and press on through failure until you succeed.

“There’s a price to being human. You have to confront your fear.”

“If you are not at risk of failing at something, that’s your biggest problem.” — Penelope Trunk

Progression from being a drone to a Linchpin is a curve, not a jump with a promotion or new freedoms.

The Lizard Brain creates quick differentiation between you and people you recognize as Linchpins to serve as excuses for why you aren’t a Linchpin.

“Stability doesn’t have to be a box. Stability can be a platform.”

“My best work happens when the things that are important are completely unstable, but the things that I live with everyday are stable.”

Write down a date and a time for when you are going to ship the thing that matters. Create THE DATE.
“If this doesn’t make you nervous, you aren’t pushing yourself enough.”

“Once you get past the tactics of the Dip, I frankly don’t care what the specifics are as long as you are proud of what you are doing.”

Check out Seth's book Linchpin for more on how to be Indispensable

It's my birthday -- Get yourself something nice.

As of today I've lived 29 extremely fortunate years. It's staggering. The amazing friends and family, the travels and experiences with even greater adventures coming over the horizon... I am blessed beyond understanding.
Nothing drives home this fact more than watching someone like Kevin Bales talk about modern slavery.
http://www.ted.com/talks/kevin_bales_how_to_combat_modern_slavery.html
I am so honored to have friends who are actively fighting this kind of exploitation:
Ann Clipperton and Laura Lynn Roebuck at International Princess Project, and Amber Grace Thomas, Shirley Till and John and Charity Marquis with Nightlight International. Both organizations give women a path out of prostitution through dignified employment, crafting premium sleepwear in India and handmade jewelry in Thailand, respectively.
Nate and Rachel Graesar have been living in Thailand for nearly a year with Sold Project, administering scholarships and building a resource center to save children from being bartered into a life of prostitution.
For my birthday, nothing would make me happier then to see my friends support my friends and contribute to the vision of a world without slavery.
Women, check out the Punjammies and Nightlight stores. Get yourself something nice. Show it off next time you see me. You too men, use this opportunity to buy a thoughtful gift. Let me know how it goes. And everyone can donate to the scholarship fund at Sold Project.
Keep doing amazing things in amazing ways.
-- Remy

Take Care of Yourself First

A little over a year ago my mother and sister launched Marchen Studios, a start-up dedicated to providing community, space, and materials to your inner artist. Since November of 2009, I've taken on the job of resident towncrier, getting the message out about all the cool things going on here and how you can be a part of it.
I'm evaluating different web solutions -- just like having people over at home or going out to a restaurant, it's important that the host picks an environment that fits the conversation. Currently we use Ning for membership services and web content management. Today I discovered some pretty cool features Ning offers for branded media hosting -- that definitely tilted me towards keeping our business within their "network of networks."
I still haven't decided if Ning is the best solution for us, but after reading this article by Michael Arrington @TechCrunch, I really want it to be.
The story:

Widget Laboratory is a 3rd party developer that made widgets that Ning users could use to add special features and functionality to their sites. A lot of people found these widgets really useful. Unfortunately the code didn't scale very well -- the more people using the widgets the more the widgets kept causing problems for the growing Ning network.
The folks at Ning and the folks at Widget Laboratory tried to work out a solution.
They didn't.
Read the PDF below and see if you can figure out why.

5023463.pdf
Download this file

After seeing how she handled the boys over at WidgetLaboratory, I'm totally crushing on Ning CEO Gina Bianchini.

These days, what I find most attractive about someone -- male or female -- is how they treat themselves. Do they view their time as a precious resource? Are they gracious, but uncompromising on their values? Do they own their failure, and their success? Do they believe, as the Romans did, ut viam inveniam aut faciam -- I will either find a way or make one.
Seriously, whenever I come across these qualities in a person, I get a little hot.
Improv performer Mick Napier makes a great point in his book: you can't do anything for your partner if you don't take care of yourself first. If you step into a scene and don't provide yourself with a strong quality or intention to play with, then you're passing that buck onto your partner. And if your partner does the same thing, both of you are asking the audience to like you -- without giving them anything to like.
Awkward.
Take care of yourself. It's true on stage. It's true in business. It's true in life.
-- Rems

Haiti -- Firsthand Accounts

From Rollings in Haiti:
"... think I’m going to have nightmares for a long time."
"When the tremors ceased, a large dust cloud was rising from the building a few doors down. A 3 story school full of teenage girls had collapsed... I went to the school and started working to pull trapped students from the wreckage."
"I got one girl out, who was very frantic. I told her to stop shouting and pray for help. She was about 10 feet deep under the collapsed cement roof of the building. At one point I went and borrowed a hammer from someone to break up the large piece of cement that she was trapped behind. The aftershocks scared the crap out of me, and I really didn’t like being under that cement slab. There was an obviously dead woman under the slab with us."
"We spent an hour boring a hole through a floor into a collapsed chamber to try to rescue a 2 year old child but the cries had stopped before we even began."
From @eliselabottcnn:
* State Department says only about 300 Americans want to leave Haiti. Many others want to stay and help

From @vhernandezcnn:
* @sanjayguptaCNN reporting from crowded hospital in Port-au-Prince, says he's only seen one doctor on site providing care
From @sanjayguptaCNN:
* still no electricity/cell service. tweeting with the help of satellites and generators. gunshots close to our location, but we are safe.
* what i have seen here in #haiti, i have never seen before. while i hate to say this, it seems somewhat hopeless. bodies still in the streets

From That's Church regarding the BRESMA orphanage in Port Au Prince:

I got the following from Ali and Jamie a few hours ago:
 first, thanks.
 - we cannot call anyone or respond to any texts, and we will not have any because phone cards are not for sale.
 - we know every situation in haiti is very serious, trust me we know.we just know this is what we have to do if these kids have any futures so that is why we even thought of the idea, and that is why we are pushing it. we are living minute to minute, and know you are all working for us. every government office is destroyed. kids who are left behind are here forever. and ever and ever.
 - family, know that jamie and i are safe as far as health and stuff like that. we were in our car during the earthquake and didn't get a scratch, physically. we are deciding not to take the us embassies offer to fly out every evening at 6 pm because if we leave the kids.... they will literally be left in our driveway with a handful of nannies who will not stick around.
 - as for if everyone is 'safe' please understand the answer is NO!!!!there is no safety here for anyone. supplies will be helpful the next few days but where to go from there? the supplies will be stolen, our house will be looted, its is simply inevitable and we are just praying for time, its going to happen. it already started downtown today, and we are ten minutes from there.
 - we are probably not going to have internet again.
i know you cant do more than youre doing... but weeks or months is not an option for the kids. its just not.
we truly love you and appreciate you all
ali and jamie

Friends, Jamie and Ali still await help.

They have 150 children to feed.

They have no food.

They have no water.

They need diapers.

The children are aged infant to 13-years-old.

They are living outside in their yard.

Gears are moving in high places to get them out of there, but in the meantime, we need help from relief agencies, humanitarian agencies, the media, or the military to get Jamie and Ali what they need to survive the next few days.

We are racing against time. There’s no easy way to say it. These children, particularly the babies, will not survive long without food and water.

Tweet, retweet, email to anyone who has anyone on the ground in Haiti to get to these humans.

Water, food, supplies, evacuation, permanent homes.

In that order.

We have specific directions to and GPS coordinates for the orphanage and virginia[at]thatschurch[dot]com is my email.

Onward.
