Free Local Family Fun!

We are geared up and very excited to be a part of the Gold Coast Blaze Family Fun Day at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, this Sunday 26^th February from 3.00pm.

This FREE event is open to the public and includes a jumping castle, face painting, charity BBQ, World’s Greatest Shave tent, performances from the Gold Coast Blaze cheerleaders, magicians and much more.

All funds raised from the sausage sizzle will go to the Mermaid Beach SLSC.

Our sales staff will doing their part and helping man the sausage sizzle, plus we will have our own marquee and will be handing out balloons and lollipops for the kids (and young at heart!).

You can also enter our free competition to win breakfast at Caffe Republic in Mermaid Beach just by putting your name in our box.

Our own mascot, the Professionals Starman is also making an appearance (see if you can guess who is wearing the suit on the day – hint, it’s one of our funniest and friendliest salesmen!).

To top off a great afternoon, the Gold Coast Blaze are playing Wollongong right after at 6.30pm, so get your tickets now and really make a day of it!

Getting Involved and Giving Back

At John Henderson Professionals Mermaid Beach, we believe in giving back to the community that has supported us since our inception in 1973.

Our family owned and run business has long been the major financial sponsor for the Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach and Miami Surf Life Saving Clubs and have donated in excess of $425,000 from our own pockets to these three clubs to enable the purchase of valuable life-saving equipment.

We also pride ourselves on being involved in those community issues that affect our local residents. We have recently been vocal to local media and the Gold Coast City Council about our opposition to residential sex clubs and party houses that affect the safety of our community.

Our Director Luke Henderson last week led the cause to help the struggling Mermaid Beach CWA community and single-handedly signed up several members to the group to help keep it afloat.

We have been regular financial supporters of the local Mermaid Waters Neighbourhood Watch for many years and are currently investigating the development of a Mermaid Beach/Nobby Beach Neighbourhood Watch.

We also sponsor several local sporting groups and the Professionals Group is a Diamond Partner for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

For our efforts, we were recently named as a finalist in the prestigious REIQ Awards for Excellence.

Water water everywhere, so why are water charges so unfair?

At times I may sound like a broken record about water usage and how unfair the current system is towards unit owners, but here I go again.

Some unit owners and tenants are water conscious, while others abuse the privilege, but when it comes to Allconnex water bills, all units owners pay exactly the same amount. There is little incentive for those who reside in units to be water wise if your neighbour is a water waster.

It seems the words so often used by the Bligh Government are “user pays” so why when it comes to water is this not the case?

When it comes to being a landlord it gets even worse because your tenant can run their taps 24/7 and all the water usage is paid for by the owners.

Unfair you say, too right it is.

Why can’t a landlord in a unit pass on the cost of the water to those who have used it? Ask that simple question of your elected State Member of Parliament and watch them fumble for an answer.

Horse Nominations this week!

We are very excited about our Henderson Racing nominations for this week, including;

Light Warrior – due to run at Kembla Grange on Wednesday 6^th February in Race 5. After buck-jumping in the Maiden and coming in fourth on Magic Millions Day, Light Warrior scored a runaway win in the Joyce Mayne Toukley Maiden on the 26^th January. Expect good things!

Kinnersley – due to run at Rosehill on Saturday 11^th February. This five-year old secured a win on 21^st January at Rosehill and is looking to follow up with another outstanding race.

Four Nations – due to run in Newcastle on Saturday 11^th February. Our tip is that this Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding would make a good each-way bet.

Keeping Your Home Safe & Secure

The Gold Coast Bulletin today reported that canal front homes are being targeted, with thieves staking out properties in canoes. We sell and rent many local canal front properties for our clients but no matter whether you live in Mermaid Waters, Mermaid Beach, Miami or any other Gold Coast suburb I think that it’s also a timely reminder for everyone to remain vigilant about the safety of their home and family.

Some tips for securing your home;

1. Physically secure your home with key operated locks on doors and windows and alarms, even when you are at home.

2. Be mindful not to put keys in obvious places like under the door mat or letterbox.

3. Engrave or microdot all items of value – that way the offender will find it difficult to resell and be less likely to steal it.

4. Know your neighbours. Swap phone numbers and keep an eye on each other’s homes then report suspicious people or vehicles to police.

5. Check all references for professional people carefully, like gardeners, cleaners or tradespeople.

6. Repair any faulty security equipment, like alarms, and ensure you change the battery promptly when it gets low.

7. If you’re not at home for a while, leave the light on and the radio playing, or use a timing device. Adjust the ringing volume on your phone so it’s not obvious the home is unoccupied.

8. Have your neighbours collect your mail and take out your rubbish if you know you’re not going to be home.

9. Keep cash, keys and valuables out of sight and easy reach.

10. In an emergency always ring triple zero (000). Use the speed dial of your telephone to record other important numbers.

11. And join your Neighbourhood Watch group! This a very valuable community resource that everyone needs to be involved with. We have been supporting the Mermaid Waters Neighbourhood Watch for over a decade and would encourage everyone in the community to do the same.

Australia Day, Mermaid Beach Style

Nobby Beach Surf Club on Albatross Avenue are celebrating a true blue Australia Day this year with a good old Aussie-style BBQ in the Park with plenty of snags for everyone!

Nobby’s have really gone all out this year to get in the Aussie spirit, with sack races, egg and spoon races and thong throwing with live entertainment and loads of fun for all the little cobbers in your family!

Celebrations kick off at 12.00pm on Thursday 26^th January so grab a mate and get down to the Nobby Beach Surf Club while you’re there why not try some of their bonzer grub and a schooner.

Jupiters Summer Surf Girl!

“I am representing Nobbys Beach Surf Life Saving Club as their 2011/12 Jupiters Summer Surf Girl Entrant.

Throughout the coming months, I will be endeavouring to raise awareness of Surf Life Saving and my Surf Club within my community and raising vital funds to keep our beach safe. I hope you will get behind my campaign.

I am currently studying a bachelor of business in marketing and Public relations at Queensland University of Technology and am employed by Myer as an Intimate Apparel team member.

The main goal of the Jupiters Summer Surf Girl program is to promote the surf club and raise vital funds by being an ambassador of Nobby’s Surf Lifesaving Club and SLSQ as a whole.

Since I joined surf lifesaving at the age of 15, I have received my Bronze medallion and IRB crew certificate and thoroughly enjoyed participating in water safety, IRB safety and as an active patrolling member.

As I have made many friends through Surf Lifesaving and gained valuable life experiences at Nobbys Beach, I believe promotion of surf awareness is vital for the community and the future of Surf Lifesaving.

Never Be Board at Miami!

It was very exciting for us to be a part of the unveiling of a whole fleet of new boards at the Miami Beach Surf Club last Sunday.

Our ongoing sponsorship of the Miami Surf Club has enabled the purchase of 14 new boards, including ‘foamies’ for the nippers. Foamies are boards designed specifically for nippers, which will prove to be a big improvement as they are more like a racing nipper board, promoting increased competition within the club for carnivals.

A Titan Day

Nobby Beach Surf Club, together with the Gold Coast Titans, hosted a fantastic family fun day last Sunday 15^th January and despite the cloudy weather there was still a great attendance.

Rugby league fans young and old queued up for a shot at dunking Gold Coast Titans player Greg Bird in the drink – although we think many were probably relishing the opportunity to sink the New South Wales State of Origin stalwart! Word has it that a few punters succeeded too, including a couple of eagle-eyed juniors who stepped up to the plate.

The numbers were great, with plenty of kids and families enjoying the sausage sizzle, face painting and jumping castle, plus plenty were signing up for Titans memberships.

From our perspective as a local family business, John Henderson Real Estate – Professionals Mermaid Beach were so proud to see the community getting together to help out the Nobby Beach Surf Club.

As a strong advocator of corporate community responsibility and a long-time major sponsor of the Nobby Beach Surf Club, it was exciting for us to see other local businesses and clubs such as Totally Teeth and the Gold Coast Titans get involved and help give back to the clubs that give us so much.
