अग्निर्ज्योतिरहः शुक्लः षण्मासा उत्तरायणम्।

तत्र प्रयाता गच्छन्ति ब्रह्म ब्रह्मविदो जनाः।।8.24।।

The northern course [of the sun] consisting of six months, is fire, light, day and bright one. Departing in it, the Brahman-knowing men attain the Brahman .

धूमो रात्रिस्तथा कृष्णः षण्मासा दक्षिणायनम्।

तत्र चान्द्रमसं ज्योतिर्योगी प्राप्य निवर्तते।।8.25।।

The southern course [of the sun], consisting of six months, is smoke, night, and also dark. [Departing] in it, the Yogin attains the moon's light and he returns.

शुक्लकृष्णे गती ह्येते जगतः शाश्वते मते।

एकया यात्यनावृत्तिमन्ययाऽऽवर्तते पुनः।।8.26।।

For, these two bright and dark courses are considered to be perpetual for the world. One attains the non-return by the first of these, and one returns back by the other one.

The summary is even when an enlightened soul leaves the body during Dakshinayana, dark half of the month or at night. He returns to this planet. This indicates that even the journey of enlightened soul is influenced by planetary disposition.

Compatibility Report

Traditionally, the score matching was based on the Nakshathra and the Rashi of the Moon. It is called ‘Gunamelan’ or गुणमेलन. The maximum possible score is supposed to be 36 and if the score is above 18 i.e., 50% then it is considered as a good enough score for marriage. One of the most known words in the matching of horoscopes is ‘Shadashtaka’. Many times, if the bride and the groom have Shadashtaka then it was considered as a perfect mismatch. However, in our research, it was found that many couples with Shadashtaka and very low score enjoyed their married life and got along very well but many couples who had very good scores did not along at all. This led us to research the factors that would lead to a joyful married life.

In our research, we also realized that the conventional method was good in the past due to various cultural and social factors. However, in today’s context when the culture has dramatically changed and the social structure is different the conventional method needs to be updated. After study of large data, we came up with a method that is effective and appropriate in today’s context. This method has many layers and considers multiple factors for the match. Therefore, it is a much deeper match than the conventional match of scores which is only based on the Moon sign and Nakshathra.

In the traditional method, only Nakshathra and Rashi of Moon are considered and this is considered as matching the horoscopes. However, the matching must be multi-fold in today’s context.

In astrology, the Moon indicates the mind and the ascendant indicates the physique. In today’s context, the physical and mental association is also one of the binding factors in long-lasting relationships along with the focus on the purpose of life. It has been proven through various surveys that physical and mental association is very important for a successful relationship. Additionally, physical compatibility shall also be considered for the well-being of the next generation.

1. Moon and Ascendant

2. Purusharthas

3. Kuja Dosha

We published the first edition of the Vedic Astrology Practitioner Manual in March 2017 and since then 6 editions have already been published. Many readers of the Vedic Astrology Practitioner Manual have reached out to me and enquired about my notes on advanced topics in Vedhic Astrology. Even though I promised them to publish my notes on advanced topics, I couldn’t get them in the format of a book till now due to my schedule and priorities. Finally, I could save some bandwidth for this work and am pleased to share it with all the readers.

There are so many books on the basics of Vedhic Astrology but the books on advanced topics are lesser in number. However, most professional astrologers suggest that the accuracy of the prediction can not be achieved without the study of advanced topics. This is one of the reasons why the students of astrology turn to classical texts. The classical texts are large in the count and most of them follow a similar structure. However, every classical text has some unique content, so the students end up referring to most classical texts. This process is long and time-consuming. I have spent sleepless nights studying many classical texts taking my notes and confirming those principles by applying them regularly.

While making my notes, I referred to many classical texts including Bruhath Parashara Hora Shasththra, Hora Saar, Hora Shathak, Jathak Chandhrika, Jathak Thathwam, Chandhra Kalanadi, Sarvartha Chinthamani, Uttharkalamrutha, Shambhu Hora, Shripathi Paddhathi, Faladheepika, Jathaka Parijatha, and Saravali. I have also validated the translation and updated it according to my learnings. Finally, I have applied most of this knowledge.

In this book, I have covered Nonluminous planets or Upagrahas, Vivshotthari Dhasha, Vargas or Divisional Horoscopes, Graha and Bala or Planetary Strength, Ashtakvarga, Gochara or Transits, and Nashtajathaka or lost horoscopes. It is rare to find a book with a compilation of all these topics. Many authors have written separate books on each topic. However, most of the classical texts deal with all these topics. This just means that the study of these topics is mandatory for prediction.

Before going through these topics, I urge you to study the fundamentals. The strong base will help you to apply these principles confidently and comfortably.

My effort is to author a book that can be referred to by astrologers regularly and in case of doubt. I hope the book serves its purpose and supports every reader.

The timing of events is a hard nut to crack. The Dashas are widely used in Vedic Astrology. However, Dashas have their advantages and limitations. Mathematics is a tricky subject. Those who love, enjoy it much and those who don’t, feel it’s boring. I lost interest in mathematics while in 7^th class. Based on what I remember, it was mainly due to lack of understanding of negative numbers. By nature, I am kinaesthetic person and therefore I refuse to accept anything unless understood thoroughly. Generally, just memorization doesn’t work for me and the same thing happened about multiplication of negative numbers. Our teacher presented them as rules and I refused to accept them at face value. One year later my cousin grandfather started living with us and he had great interest in teaching. Moreover, his concepts in mathematics were extremely clear and he could answer all my crazy questions. This retriggered my interest in mathematics. The whole journey was so joyful that I wish everyone gets a grandfather like him who is at home to help with fundamental questions in studies.

Later, when I was in 9^th I was introduced to Vedic Math by my close friend. At that time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and started using it to an extend where I completely forgot methods taught in the school. Few years back I started taking courses in Vedic math and I repeatedly received questions about relevance of the course in school. Even though these methods cannot be directly used in school today, some of the methods are being included in school curriculum and therefore I decided to author books as per the curriculum.

While developing Vedic Math book for a particular class I realized that numbers being abstract, it’s also important to explain some of the concepts through art and craft. Therefore, I decided to also add Creative Math as a part of this book. This is because learning is much more effective through Activities and Games for many.

When I started thinking about developing books as per the curriculum, next question was which board to follow. After a bit of research, I got to know that CBSE is most popular board in India and therefore I decided to develop Vedic Math books for CBSE curriculum. Finally, I had a choice of developing books from class I and I decided to develop books for secondary school first. I first published a book for class 8 and received very good response. Therefore, we released 2^nd edition of ‘Vedic Math for 8^th Class’. Now I am pleased to release Vedic and Creative Math for 7^th Class.

The structure of this book and sequence of CBSE syllabus is not the same and it is intentional. The book is divided into three sections. Section I is to learn basic principles, section II is for application of principles and section III covers Creative Geometry. Section I is mostly to explain the methods and it is important to refer section II to confirm that concepts are understood and ability to apply concepts is developed in pupils. Section III mainly uses Creative Math to explain concepts of geometry. It is fun to learn geometry in this manner rather than conventional method.

I have repeated some of the chapters from my book ‘Vedic Math for 8^th Class’ here and this is because your learning of next year gets covered 1 year sooner! Additionally, concepts of Vedic Math are easily expandable and it’s easy to cover the whole concept rather than just a part of it.

The book is designed in such a way that all required methods from Vedic Math are covered here and the student need not refer to any other book to learn the basics. Additionally, numbers (data) are represented in pictorial format or charts wherever appropriate. This certainly simplifies the learning. Geometry is explained through activities and this makes the learning very simple and easy to retain.

I have explained principles wherever relevant. This shall help the pupil to understand them further and apply them confidently. In the curriculum of 7^th class, I have covered Bar numbers. This is a very simple concept which eliminates the need of numbers greater than 5 and simplifies calculations. This is also relevant when you know negative numbers. Additionally, I have also explained patterns in decimal numbers and usage of 9 in the context of decimals. Vedic math treats decimals in a special manner. This offers deeper understanding of decimals as compared to the curriculum. The key focus of this book is Fractions, Decimals and Integers.

Even though I have covered most of the syllabus in this book, it does not cover whole syllabus 100% and this book has many additional things that are not part of the syllabus. At a high level, some of the concepts in solid shapes, symmetry and practical geometry are not covered 100% and the students can learn them quickly based on their learnings from this book.

Successful identification of underground water source

I generally stay away from publishing my success stories and this is because every case is unique. This one is very different and important.

Long ago, when I was in college, I used to visit a spiritual personality out of curiosity. During one of his visits he taught me a method to identify underground water sources. I very rarely used this method. Few years ago, my uncle wanted to dig a well and so I suggested him a place for digging a well. He started digging a well but due to some reason he couldn’t complete it. Last year my cousin reached out to me for the same reason and when I analyzed same place once again, underground water map was totally changed. Finally, we identified a spot with enough water.

As a natural next step digging of the well started and after 15 meters, they found a small water stream. On further digging they could find 2 more bigger streams of water and now the well has more than 16 feet of water level even in summer. It took more than 3 hours to empty this well.

This was important for them because for almost 75 years they faced many challenges related to water and spent lot of money to dig a well. It was important for me because underground water map totally changed over the period of time.

Smaller inner rings. This was done to take care of due to softer soil. You may observe wet soil in the periphery.

To be successful we did many things. First was to identify a spot. Second was to test it with astrology, then my uncle took a nod from their family goddess to dig a well and finally we identified a good time (Muhurt) to start the work. I thank all the energies to be supportive for such an important work because total cost of digging a well was few lakhs of rupees.

Which is most important element out of 5 elements and why?

In the last post, we learned how to do a Yadnya without a Purohit or a priest. The importance of Yadnya is undebatable and fire is a key in Yadnya.

As you might know, we consider 5 elements. Prithvi or earth, Aap or water, Teja or a form of energy and heat, Vayu or form of air. Finally, Aakash or atmosphere.

The very first Rhucha or stanza of Rhugveda refers to fire.

ॐ अग्निमीळे पुरोहितं यज्ञस्यदेवमृत्विजम् ।
होतारं रत्नधातमम् ॥१॥

Om Agnim-Iille Purohitam Yajnyasya Devam-Rtvijam |
Hotaaram Ratna-Dhaatamam ||1||
Meaning:

1.1: Om, I praise Agni who is the Purohita (Priest) of the Yagya (Sacrifice) (Priest leading the Sacrifice), (as well as) its Ritvij (Priest performing Sacrifice at proper times); the Yagya which is directed towards the Devas,

1.2: Who is (also) the Hotara (Priest invoking the Gods) and the bestower of Ratna (Wealth of physical, mental, and spiritual plane).

It says Agni Meele Purohitm and You might wonder what is special about Agni or fire.

Agni suggests an energy that can be anywhere in the universe. Other elements have natural limitations of location.

Atmosphere or Akash is only around a few planets. Air doesn't exist outside of the atmosphere. Prithvi is only limited to planets. Water is limited to earth. Therefore, only Teja is universal.

There are different forms of Fire. The regular fire is the most obvious form of Teja. Heat is another form. The Sun and stars are the universal form of Teja. Teja can burn. Burning is a process of converting one form of energy to another form. Due to so many reasons, Teja has a very high place in Veda and Vedic processes.

The Yadnya is exactly this process of moving from one phase to another and completing the cycle. Conversion of energy from one form to another is a key part of Yadnya.

There are many types of Agni or fires. Mantragni, the energy of mantra. Jatharagni or the energy of digestion, Dnyanagni, or the fire of knowledge. Badabagni or the fire of insult. Kamagni the fire of desire. These are 5 key forms of fire. I have explained more about these Fires in my book Untold Nakshatra Jyotish and here I want to explain why Fire is the key element out of all the elements.

Our culture wants us to preserve this for coming generations!

Just last month I visited our native place and I recollected my childhood because of the things that I saw there. Most of the things are now outdated and our coming generations may not even get to know about them unless we preserve them proudly. We want to take care and preserve all the items mentioned below for coming generations and this blog is just in remembrance of our childhood. I am showcasing a picture below and offering a brief description for those who aren’t aware of the gadgets in the picture. I thought Gudi Padwa is a very good occasion to share this with all of you.

This is called Laath. This is used to make rice flakes or poha. Even today my uncle makes Poha using this Lath twice every year. During Diwali poha made from fresh rice on Laath is offered to the god. Laath is also used to grind spices.

Above vessel is made from a stem of a large jack fruit tree. It is used to store natural sea salt throughout the year. If salt is stored in metal containers then the containers corrode and therefore thick wooden containers are used to store natural sea salt.

This is a chool, choolha or a fire stove. However, this is not used to cook food but to perform Vaishwadev. In my last post we discussed Vaishwadev and you may read more about Vaishwadev here.

This is a wheel on the well. A rope is passed through this and it is used to pull water from the well.

This is wet grinder. It is used to grind dosa batter and wet coconut chatni. Parts displayed below are used to grind various batters.

Below grinder is a dry grinder and used to create flour of various grains for example rice flour, wheat flour.

Below is a typical permanent setup to heat water for bath every day. This is a typical fire place with a vessel on it.

Banana leaves are used as a plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner. After food is eaten, the banana leaves are fed to cattle. This is an ideal zero footprint mechanism!

Why Purohit or Priest is not required to perform a Yadnya?

The Vedas have always been presenting a deeper meaning to every term or action and mostly people fail to understand deeper meaning of the Vedas. We have been regularly understanding deeper meaning of many such terms through our blog and books. I could not author a post for a while due to focus on Untold Nakshathta Jyotish. All the while I have been thinking about various fundamental concepts from the Vedas. Untold Nakshathta Jyotish has many such concepts.

Today I plan to explain the concept of Yadnya. Traditionally when we refer to Yadnya we think of a Yadnya Kunda or a holy pit with fire and Purohits offering some grains in the holy fire. This is a perfect practice and can be performed occasionally.

The Vedas also suggest Pancha-Maha-Yadnya or 5 key sacrifices and this practice is supposed to be performed every day.

The practice is as below. Everyone shall perform following Yadnyas every day.

1.Brahma Yadnya

Brahma means the universal energy. This Practice is to be performed to understand Brahma and our relation to the Brahma.

This practice includes studying scriptures for the purpose of understanding Brahma. This may include studying Vedas and other scriptures, meditation and other practices.

2.Deva Yadnya

As you might know, Div means light as Deva means the one with light. Deva Yadnya means offerings to the light. This daily practice is called Agnihotra. Light and fire has immense importance in Vedic culture. I shall author a separate post on fire and light to explain the focus of Vedas on fire and light.

3.Pitru Yadnya

Pitara means ancestors. Paying homage to ancestors for their contribution in our life and the ecosystem is the purpose of Pitru Yadnya.

Pitru Yadnya is performed in many different ways. The simplest way is to offer rice to a crow and sugar to ants because they are messengers of the ancestors.

Performing Yearly Shraddhas and occasional Tarpan are also ways of Pitru Yadnya.

4.Bhoota Yadnya

This is also called Vaishwadeva. This is an offering to universal god in the form of living beings. To perform this Yadnya, food is offered to animals.

Some people offer food to cows as we take cow milk. Some people also offer food to dogs.

Interestingly, Vaishwadeva combines 3 Yadnyas. During Vaishwadeva rice is offered to a crow as a part of Pitru Yadnya, rice is also offered to fire as a part of deva Yadnya and rice is even offered to a cow as a part of Bhoota Yadnya.

5.Atithi Yadnya

Atithi means uninvited guest who joins for very less time. Atithi Yadnya is performed by offering food to the guest.

People who follow Agnihotra and Vaishwadeva complete 4 out of 5 Panchamahayadnyas every day as a practice.

I explained Panchamahayadnyas for a different reason. I want to tell you that all the 5 Maha Yadnyas don’t need any Brahmin or Priest because they are simple daily procedures. If you follow these 5 Maha Yadnyas every day you don’t need a Brahmin for Yadnya.

This covers another aspect of Vedic culture. Even though Vedic culture has procedural aspect, it even has stronger social and environmental aspect. And even though it suggests rituals it strongly suggests actions for the benefit of society and environment.

Prosperity n Joy turns 4!

This was another exciting year for PnJ. This year our focus was on Vedic Math and we released 3 books on Vedic Math. We also started conducting courses for younger kids.
The first book we released was 'Vedic Math for 8th class', second book was 'Vedic Math primary school arithmetic' and third book is 'Drawing and Feeling Math'. Vedic Math courses and books got very good response from all of you and I want to Thank you for your affection.
Recently we launched an interesting course and this is to learn math with craft, art, acting and gaming. Everyone including us are thrilled with this.
We even released a book of Kalyani's Poems (Najar) and many people liked it. Some of them sent awesome reviews, some others sent their notes on her poems. Some are reading them regularly and presenting it in public forums with prior permission.
In coming year, we want to design and deliver new courses and I want to publish my next research book on Vedic Astrology. This book will be Part 2 of 'Untold Vedic Astrology'.

Why remedies like ‘Pooja’ or ‘Shanti’ sometimes don’t work?

Many times, when we go to astrologers they suggest us conventional remedies. These remedies include Mantra, Vrata, Pooja, Shanti and so on. Sometimes these remedies work and sometimes they don’t. Similarly, some astrologers suggest gemstones and even gemstones don’t always work.

You may wonder, how come sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. In today’s blog post we are understanding this.

Hindu philosophy describes 3 different types of challenges or Taapa. The challenges are ‘Aadhyatmik’ or personality related, ‘Aadhibhouthik’ or related to material things and ‘Aadhidhaivik’ or related to various energies or Devathas. Curious if you remember, when we were kids some people used to tell us sarcastically to study for exams rather than visiting temple and sometimes we did feel that it is correct because if preparations for exam are not complete then temple visit may not be helpful either. Incomplete preparations are an Aadhyatmik challenge. If we lack in any skills, first we shall build appropriate skills rather than doing Pooja or Shanti.

When we do Poojas or Shanti; sometimes we don’t know the skill we are lacking. This means we are unconsciously incompetent. Sometimes we even deflect our attention consciously or unconsciously to irrelevant causes of failure. Yoga, meditation or prayers are some of the traditional ways to work on ‘Aadhyatmik’ challenges. Focus on learning skills and following traditional family professions was also a traditional way to take care of this type of challenge. Skill building, soft skill development are modern ways to taking care of ‘Aadhyatmik’ challenges. Both traditional and modern ways of dealing with Aadhtyamik challenges is a great combination and give quick results.

The second type of challenge is Aadhibhoutik challenge. ‘Aadhibhoutik’ means challenge due to material things. Aadhibhoutik challenges include health related issues, accidents, fights, trouble due to breaking laws etc. A simplest approach for this is to take precautionary measures. Yogasana, Ayurveda, well planned routine, good diet, lot of physical activities and being in nature were some of the traditional ways of dealing with this type of challenges. In the modern world, this challenge has become even bigger because of machines and pace of life. Modern medicines, safety standards, health routines, medical checkups, weight loss programs, beauty therapies and robotics are some of the latest ways to take care of this challenge. For example, if the vehicle is not serviced as per schedule and the breaks fail then it is not a part of luck but lack of precaution. Such things come under Aadhibhouthik challenges.

Third type of challenge is Adhidhaivik challenge. Aadhidaivik means challenges caused by Dhevatha. Here we all shall note the difference between Dhev and Dhevatha. Dhev are pure forms and generally don’t cause any harm. These are Brahama, Vishnu and Mahesh. Dhevatha are energies that may boon or mar. Examples of Dhevatha are Kuldhevatha, SthanaDhevatha, VaasthuDhevatha, GramaDhevatha, NavagrahaDhevatha, Pithar, etc. Key role of Pooja or Shanthi is to take care of such challenges.

Generally, astrologers suggest remedies for AadhiDhaivik challenges and natives believe that once these remedies are performed everything will be fixed. Even sometimes the astrologer does not explain such basics. Ideally all 3 types of challenges shall be taken care for any type of success.

This is very well explained in BhagwadGeetha chapter 18 verse 14 given below.

Meaning: Foundation or purpose (First), executive(s)(Second) and various distinct means or tools(Third) along with various distinct actions(Fourth) and Dhaiva is also the fifth one here.

This verse is about the Karma and its results. What it says is Dhaivam is fifth aspect of the results. Because Horoscope is a representation of past karma this verse is also relevant to astrology. In this verse, foundation or purpose and executives or team are considered as Aadhyathmik. Similarly, various tools or means and actions are considered as Aadhibhouthik. Finally, Dhaiva is mentioned as fifth.

We all shall understand this very well either as an astrologer or a seeker. Astrologer can identify all 3 types of challenges from the horoscope. A client shall understand that just one type of remedy is not good enough. This is also responsibility of an astrologer to make the native understand it. Unless all types of challenges are not resolved, a project may not be successful, or an expected output may not be achieved.

I generally explain this to every client of mine to make sure they take efforts and cover all the aspects. This gives confidence to the native, ensures success and reduces dependency of a native on an astrologer. Finally, our goal shall be to achieve success, enjoy the journey and prosper with self-respect and understanding this helps to be on the right path.

The mystic meaning of Shree Saraswathi Yanthram

Recently someone asked me about the scientific meaning of Shree Saraswathi Yanthram and I thought many of you may have same question. Many Hindus have been drawing and praying Shree Saraswathi Yanthram or Shree Saraswathi sign since childhood. Many of you may know that Shree Saraswathi is a goddess of 14 Vidya or sources of knowledge and 64 Kala or art forms. Therefore, she is also a goddess of creation and creativity.

On another note Shakthi is represented by a triangle in Vedic culture. The real meaning of word Shakthi is skill. You may wonder why a skill is represented by a triangle. A skill is represented by a triangle because a skill requires perfect coordination between Mind, Body & Intellect. The 3 sides of a triangle represent Mind, Body & Intellect.

Let’s learn about Shree Saraswathi Yanthram in this context. Below is a picture of Shree Saraswathi Yanthram.

As you observe the picture closely you may learn that the Yantra has many triangles. In first row you may see just 1 triangle and in second row you may observe 3 triangles, and this continues till 8^th row where you may find upto 15 triangles. The sum of this series up to 8^th row is 64. These are the number of art forms or kala. On the top of the Yantra, you get to see eyes and heads. Eyes indicate inputs from the sense and heads indicate processing of the inputs. If you know how this Yanthra is drawn, you may realize that this drawing suggests sensing outside world is an input. Such multiple inputs are processed in the brain to develop skills or Shakthi.

You may observe that multiple such triangles also form larger triangles. This indicates multiple smaller and related skills may lead to wider application and evolution of brain.

There is one more occult meaning to this Yanthra. All Indian sciences are formed on one principle and the principle is.

“Yatha Pinde Tatha Brahamande |

Yatha brahamande Tatha Pinde ||”

This is called ‘Pinda Brahamanda Theory’. This simply means the way it is in Atom that same way it is in universe and the way it is in universe the same way it is in atom. This principle is very similar to the Holographic theory in modern science. The holographic theory states that this world is a 2-dimensional holograph. If we cut any piece of holograph up to certain extent, we get to see entire picture on the holograph.

Shree Saraswathi Yanthram also represents ‘Pinda Brahamanda Theory’. This is because multiple small triangles are embedded into larger triangles. Similarly, you may see a triangle pointing upwards as well as downwards. Indirectly this is very similar to a holograph so this Yanthra also represents Holographic theory.

When I learnt about this I was amazed and you might feel the same. I have explained more about Pinda Brahamnda theory or Holographic theory and its relation to Indian culture in my book ‘Eva and Shiva’. Holi Hai!!! – Plan for a prosperous and joyful new year

Every Indian festival has a purpose and the purpose is relevant even today. Today I want to discuss a bit about structure of an Indian year and purpose of Holi.

As you may be aware, Indian culture has 3 key gods i.e. Branhma, Vishnu and Mahesh or Shiva and similarly 3 goddesses i.e. Devi Saraswathi, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. The roles of the 3 gods and goddesses are also defined. Brahma and Devi Saraswathi are creators, Vishnu and Mahalakshmi are nurturers finally lord Shiva and Mahakali are destroyers. Lord Ganesha is also considered as representation of Brahma.

According to Hindu philosophy this cycle of creation, nurturing and destruction is a continuous cycle. Shree Swami Vivekananda gave an analogy of waves in an ocean to this cycle. Another interesting principle in Vedic literature is “Yatha Pinde tatha brahmande| Yatha Brahamande tatha Pinde” or what you observe at micro level is also observable at mega level or vice versa. This is perfectly scientific based on holographic theory in quantum physics. Therefore, Hindus considered a year as a section of infinite time.

Hindu festivals in a year are also organized around this theory of creation, nurturing and destruction. The beginning of the year is with festivals of Lord Ganesha and Devi Saraswathi. Later for quite some time lord Vishnu is worshipped. This includes Aashadhi and Karthiki Ekadhashi. In the month of Ashwin i.e. 6^th month when half a year is about to get over we offer our prayers to Lord Vishnu on the day of Dhanathrayodhashi and request for good health. On the new moon day or Aashiwn Amavasya, we offer our prayers to Devi Mahalakshmi and request for good wealth. Finally, the year ends with Mahashivarathri where we offer prayers to lord Shiva the destroyer.

Holi comes after Mahashivrathri when a Hindu year is about to end, and a new year is going to begin in just 15 days. These are last 15 days of Shishir Rhutu or season. During Shishir season trees shed their leaves. The Hindus has always learnt from nature and complimented the nature as well. As the summer is about to start, these shed leave and trees may become reason for forest fire and so the suggestion is to burn the leaves and dried trees. This is also time to pray the forest gods and goddesses for happy and mishap less summer in the forest.

In some cultures, on the day of Holi people use bad words against each other and this is totally acceptable. In some other cultures people play along with family and friends using colors or mud. The whole purpose of this is to forget everything that happened in the year and have a fresh start on new year day. Cultures where bad words are acceptable suggest taking out the frustration or grudge and be friends whereas cultures where people play colours suggest being friends by forgiving everything that happened in last year.

During the fortnight after Holi, Shraddhas for ancestors are performed. This is to resolve unhappiness of ancestors or fulfill any of their wishes.

This whole concept is very similar to business closure but on a personal front. It also suggests preparation for next year on Gudi padwa or Yugadi.

This is a great indication that Hindus were very much evolved and used to take care of emotional debts and maintain emotional balance year over year. This concept is very important today in digital world. As you think about the concept and see how it is applicable in today’s world, you may take it forward in your life and build a sound foundation of next year. You may have your own ways and methods to reconnect with your friends and relatives. You may also have your own ways to create your emotional balance. This is a good time to think and revisit events and people in past 1 year. Identify the and build an action plan. I wish you all a Happy and joyful Holi.

Note: Shaktas celebrate Navarathri and during this festival all 3 goddesses are worshipped. The sequence followed for 9 nights is Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, Mahakali respectively. This sequence also follows creator, nurturer and destroyer theory.

Vedic Math : Primary school arithmetic is live

Almost 4 months ago we published Vedic Math for 8th class. When I released that book the plan was to publish books for all classes. You may be aware that every book is independent and does not require any prior knowledge of Vedic Math. Even then, it is nice to know the basics really well. Therefore, I decided to first cover primary school arithmetic.

This book mainly covers simple methods of all 4 arithmetic operations i.e. Addition, Subtraction, multiplication and division. It also covers methods to develop multiplication tables and checking answers.

The focus of Vedic methods is on mental math. Methods of multiplication and division in Vedic math are special. They are quick and easy. Interestingly one of the methods for multiplication is also applicable to division. Once you learn these methods algebra becomes easier.
This book is most appropriate for pupils in 4th or 5th class. First 9 chapters are also helpful to pupils in 1st and 2nd class as well. I do plan to simplify addition, subtraction further in an upcoming book. Upcoming book will be more suitable for visual and kinesthetic learners and it will compliment this book in many different ways.

Eco friendly lantern for Deepawali

As you know by now one of our focus is to develop eco-friendly lifestyle. For last 3 years we have been making Ganesha idol at home. For so many years we are making eco friendly lantern for Deepawali.
Few years ago we made lantern from handmade paper. Even the handmade paper was made at home. Last year we made a simple spherical lantern with wire frame.
This year we thought of making a lantern of ice cream sticks and canvas. This was a very simple rectangular design and it was mainly to show my daughter how simple it is make a lantern.
We used potato and okra to design stamps. We also bought leaves from the shop to decorate the lantern. You may get an idea of the stamps and other things from below picture.
