It may be hard to believe, but LiveClick has been around since 2005, adding feed reading, notifications, favicons, and other enhancements to Live Bookmarks since Firefox version 1.0. Well, next month will see the release of Firefox 57, at which point LiveClick will be officially retired.

Please allow me to explain why this is occurring and whether or not LiveClick as written might work on other web browsers.

Here’s a quick update to fix a couple of things that broke with Firefox 51’s release from last week. It’s already approved on AMO, so you should get the update automatically. If not, you can find the direct link below.

Please Note: Due to changes coming soon to Firefox, LiveClick may not be compatible beyond the next Firefox ESR (currently Fx45).

I regret to report that LiveClick’s days are numbered. Due to changes coming soon to Firefox—most notably the removal of extension functionality that LiveClick requires to make changes to the appearance of your bookmarks—LiveClick is unlikely to be compatible with Firefox at some point in the near future. I have waited for new options and explored some alternatives, but I always return to the advice that the Firefox team gave to addon developers like me when they first announced the change: it’s probably not worth the effort.

So what should you do, brave and loyal LiveClick users? I can only tell you what I am personally doing: staying on Firefox 45 for as long as I can. That’s the most recent Extended Support Release (ESR), which is guaranteed to get security updates for a few more months, but it will not be updated with any new features (for better or worse). I’m hopeful that LiveClick will still work with the next ESR (possibly Firefox 52?), which means at least another year for LiveClick on a stable and secure browser.

Anyway, Firefox 49 came out recently and LiveClick required a few minor changes to get it fully functional again. The download link is below, but it’s unsigned and you’ll have to tweak your Firefox to install it. You can try downloading it directly from AMO. Otherwise I recommend waiting until 1.4.0 gets approved and signed, at which point your Firefox should update LiveClick automatically. Update: LiveClick 1.4.0 has been approved, so your Firefox should be getting the automatic update shortly.

With Firefox 45 set to be released soon, I figured it was time for another LiveClick update. Firefox 45 will be an Extended Support Release (ESR), perhaps the final ESR that will work with LiveClick, so it was important that LiveClick have a fully functional version for it. LiveClick 1.2.0 fixes a few bugs and addresses some compatibility issues, getting the code more in line with Firefox’s latest changes and recommendations. Thanks to everyone who still uses LiveClick.

The download link is below, as always, but it’s unsigned and you’ll have to tweak your Firefox to install it. You can try downloading it directly from AMO. Otherwise I recommend waiting until 1.2.0 gets approved and signed, at which point your Firefox should update LiveClick automatically.

There are no new features in this build. This is mostly an attempt to get a stable build of LiveClick working with the ever-changing versions of Firefox. LiveClick 1.0.0 does, however, correct a number of issues that had been keeping the 0.5.0.0 branch in perpetual beta, namely its incompatibility with other live bookmark addons and synchronization tools. If you’re upgrading from LiveClick 0.4.2.0, please be aware that your settings and live bookmarks history may be reset.
