WHY GROUPS ATTEND THE FOLLIES

Some folks have told us that attending the Follies with 10 or more of their close friends, associates or family members is the best way of all to enjoy a performance. Others say that they hate planning events, so a trip to the Follies is like someone else did all the work for them. And finally, there are those who say that “dear Uncle Ira” (and everyone has one) only stops talking about his gout when he's seated in The Historic Plaza Theatre watching our showgirls strut their stuff!

HOW WE MAKE PLANNING A GROUP EASY

But whatever your reason, we've dedicated an entire department exclusively to assist you in planning your Follies group event. We provide resources to help publicize and organize your visit; a Follies group representative to personally greet your group on your bus or when you arrive at the theater; special value added features exclusive to groups; and, of course, the Follies man's group introductions during every Follies performance. We even have a new program that makes it easy for you to raise funds for your favorite non-profit or charity.

You do a great job promoting the Follies and bringing each of us ticket holders into the fold!

I know you announce specially honored groups, but I'm a group only of one. As Senior Class President, I can represent our Palm Springs High School Class of 1952. I'm also one of the group of classmates (second from right in photo above) who posed for a Plaza Theatre promotional shot.

The Plaza will feel like home, both from necking in the balcony and for singing on your stage as Sergeant of Police in the Hammond's production of "Pirates of Penzance."

It promises to be a warm, wonderful Valentine's weekend in The Springs. Jo and I can hardly wait!

Nearly 50 years after "It's My Party" hit #1, the legendary Lesley Gore continues her pop princess reign right here on the stage of the Historic Plaza Theatre. Through March 5, she'll be taking Follies audiences on a nostalgic journey, with such musical stops as "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows," "Maybe I Know," "Judy's Turn To Cry," "She's A Fool" and her proto-feminist anthem, "You Don't Own Me."

The Little Lady with the Very Big Voice Wows Audiences

In 1963, a 16-year-old high school junior recorded a song that instantly became the anthem for a generation of teenage girls. It's My Party was Lesley Gore's very first recording, and rocketed to the top of the charts, reaching #1, and selling over one million copies. On January 5, 2011, she makes her long-awaited Palm Springs Follies debut, playing through March 5, 2011.

Born in New York City in 1946 and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Gore was discovered by famed record producer Quincy Jones. Her first smash hit was quickly followed by a string of other Jones-produced chart-toppers, including That's the Way Boys Are, Maybe I Know, The Look of Love and Judy's Turn To Cry. Her proto-feminist anthem You Don't Own Me held the #2 spot on the charts for four weeks behind The Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand, and earned Gore her second Gold Record.

Gore headlined the 1964 concert film, The T.A.M.I. Show (Teen Awards Music International), along with James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and The Rolling Stones. Considered by some as one of the very best rock-and-roll movies ever made, it was filmed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and played movie theaters nationwide.

Gore's Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows, from the 1965 movie Ski Party, brought her a second Grammy nomination for Contemporary Rock and Roll female vocal performance.

Throughout the following decades Gore continued performing and song writing, including composing songs for the soundtrack of the 1980 film Fame. Gore received an Academy Award nomination for that film's Out Here on My Own, written with her brother. The song was a Top 20 hit for Irene Cara.

In 2005, the singer-songwriter recorded her first album of new material since 1976 entitled Ever Since. Songs from that album have been used in major television shows and films, including CSI: Miami, The L Word and Flannel Pajamas.

"You know what I say when people ask me what I've been doing for the past 30 years?" With a wry smile, she states, "Practicing." And when Lesley Gore steps onto the Plaza Theatre's stage, Follies audiences know it was time well spent--her powerful voice and catalogue of hit songs reflect the hard-won wisdom of time.

Toys for Tots Drive Ends with Special Visit

We would like to thank you for your generous donations to our annual Toys For Tots drive. The Historic Plaza Theatre was again one of the major collection sites in the Coachella Valley for this most worthwhile cause. A highlight of our holiday season is always the visit by active duty Marines who pick up the donated toys, then pose for a photo with Follies cast. This year, however, Corporal Jonathan O'Donnell and Corporal Lorenzo Soria stayed the entire afternoon, manning the toy collection bin, allowing us to introduce them during our finale, and taking part in our post show lobby meet-and-greet. We've included a short video of their visit and hope it conveys what a special day it was for all. These young men are truly among America's finest.

Real-life Glee

The television show Glee is a certifiable hit and we were honored when a real-life version recently visited us. Members of the Coachella Valley High School Chorus and Drama Classes (under the direction of Follies Music Sketch Artist Wayne Abravanel) attended a Follies performance then gave a surprise musical performance in our courtyard afterwards. I hope you enjoy this clip of wonderful musicians performing brilliantly.

The Crystals - Better Than Ever

If you've never seen The Crystals in person, you're in for an extraordinary experience. As a preview, we've included a short video. This group of lovely ladies is aptly named because crystal is exactly what shatters when they hit their top notes (as you'll soon hear.) In fact, some of their notes can only be heard by the guide dogs sitting in our audience. This legendary group departs after December 31, so please don't miss them. The Crystals are the defining girl group of the early Sixties and were the template for all thereafter. They are most certainly a moment in musical history, the history of our music.

"I spent the summer at my home in St. Louis, Missouri, having quality time with family and friends. My daughter came in from Denver, Colorado, with her daughters for a week. It was pure joy having both daughters and four granddaughters all together. It was a hectic week, but so much fun for everyone.

"I went to the Muny Opera every week and saw such Broadway musicals as Damn Yankees, Beauty and the Beast, Sound of Music, Show Boat and Footloose. I also got to attend the road company production of Wicked.

"I took one trip to Wilmington, North Carolina, to visit my brother. We had a great time relaxing at his home and on the beach. We also visited the Arlie Gardens, which was absolutely gorgeous." Read Bio

"The summer started with a celebration: My birthday and my sister joining the Follies! We commemorated both occasions by going to Melvyn's Restaurant the night before our first costume fitting.

"I had a great time going to L.A., meeting friends and seeing plays like the revival of Brooklyn, USA and Beyond, a Cirque-type show.

"Next, we went to Tempe, Arizona, to reminisce with former schoolmates.

"I was back in Palm Springs in time to be 'poolside' for the Fourth of July, and take classes in Qigong (a form of Chinese exercise) and Laughing Yoga (just like it sounds) with fellow Follies cast mate Joni Naber.

"After hearing that I was to be joining the Follies, I decided to take a little time to enjoy California. I first spent some time in L.A., which included shopping and attending the theatre, including the plays Bagels, The Alice Project, and Rip Taylor's new one man show, It Ain't All Confetti (he's a funny man with a very interesting life story). We took pictures with him after the show and also got a fleeting glimpse of Alex Trebek, who was also in the audience. My youngest sister (the one not in the Follies) was able to catch his attention long enough to say that Jeopardy is her favorite show.

"Afterwards, we went to Catalina for a day and then took a little trip up the coast to Ventura, Solvang and San Simeon to visit Hearst Castle, which was magnificent! We only did one of the tours, so sometime, we will have to go back to see more of it.

"Then it was back to Florida for the real fun and games: packing up my 'stuff' . . . and there's a lot of it!

"I went to the Bon Festival at The Morikami Museum in Delray Beach, Florida, at the beginning of August. It's a really nice Japanese tradition in which they believe their departed ancestors come back to visit us on Earth for a few days and, when it is time for them to return, they light their way back with lanterns. The grounds of the museum are beautiful and, when it gets dark, they have fireworks, followed by lighting the lanterns and floating them on the lake.

"From May 22-29, my husband, Michael, and I vacationed in beautiful and festive Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. From our balcony at The Playa Grande Hotel, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, as well as watching the happy tourists splashing away in one of six swimming pools. We joined them, of course, and had a ball.

"One of the most memorable evenings was dining on yummy seafood in an open-air, rock-jetty restaurant that was built right into the side of a mountain--oh so romantic to be there at sunset.

Follies Box Office Re-Opens Today!

"I traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, to assist in the restoration of my gentleman friend's childhood home. I thought leaving the desert in summer would be a relief, but East Coast humidity . . . ughh! It was so heavy that I've started to grow gills!

"We gutted the 1938 Cape Cod and updated everything. We were thrilled to be able to keep the original oak hardwood floors. The living room plaster ceiling looks like frosting on a wedding cake . . . gorgeous!

"From the beginning action of obtaining permits to the final act of installing doorstops, the work was exhausting and challenging, but also educational and fulfilling. The home is located on a tree-lined street in the Ocean View area and is just beautiful . . . reminiscent of a home on an MGM back lot.

"I went to Colorado for two weeks to visit my daughter, Vanessa, and grandbaby number 11, three-month-old Ryan. We visited the Garden of the Gods and saw the beautiful sandstone formations.

"It was great to have all seven of my children and eight of my grandchildren attend my 77th birthday party in Newport Beach. We ended the day with a glorious sunset cruise; even the dolphins wished me a happy birthday!

"My daughter, Stephanie, is a host family to two Haitian sisters who barely survived the January earthquake. Edeline is a schoolteacher who was buried for three days after her school building collapsed. Her sister dug her out with her bare hands. Hearing their story was so moving.

"And my summer almost ended in disaster when my daughter, Victoria's, house nearly went up in flames during the recent Palmdale wildfire. It was scary to watch the flames burn so near to us. The fire fighters saved the building by using water from her pool, but most of her furniture was smoke damaged. Fortunately, no one was injured . . . except for my allergies!" Read Bio

In one month, I've moved from the San Fernando Valley to my new flat in West Hollywood; closed my storage unit which housed my belongings since relocating to the West Coast from NYC in 2005; got my 7-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever 'Gabrian' back, who was with a friend for the last year because pets weren't allowed where I lived (tough being without him); started ballet class to get in shape for the show (oy!); and began unpacking some 152 boxes! The Supremes' Mary Wilson Now Appearing

On Saturday after the show, a Follies patron said, "Seeing Mary Wilson on your stage is like watching one of the original Beatles perform."

This comparison caused us pause, as Miss Wilson is not only an original member of the world's most-famous female trio, but there's really been no other "girl group" whose musical and cultural impact is even remotely equal to The Supremes' . . . not unlike that of those moppet-headed boys from Liverpool.

But last week's Follies debut of Mary Wilson was more than just a walk down memory lane; she contextualizes the history of The Supremes and makes it resolutely today . . . an amazing act of musical legerdemain.

Whether singing the chart-topping hits of The Supremes or other popular classics, she had Follies audiences cheering.

And we are all very excited. Ms. Coolidge is indeed an icon of the 70s and she remains - to this day - a true star, continuing to concertize all over the world.

Performing her chart-topping hits including "Higher & Higher", "We're All Alone", "Superstar" and a tribute to her own Cherokee Nation, she brings her timeless talent and dark beauty to our Follies stage.

Two-Time Grammy Winner Makes Follies Debut

Rita Coolidge Lifts Plaza Theatre Audiences "Higher & Higher" With Billboard Hits

Born in 1945 in Lafayette, Tennessee, of Scottish and Cherokee Native American ancestry, Rita Coolidge began her career as a highly-in-demand session vocalist for artists such as Delaney & Bonnie, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton and Leon Russell.

Her first solo single was recorded in 1968, after former Elvis Presley chief aide and close friend Marty Lacker discovered her. Lacker produced Coolidge's "Turn Around and Love You", which became a regional hit in Los Angeles and the West Coast. She then worked with Leon Russell, and both became members of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. Her performance of "Superstar" on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen album helped her gain national attention.

Coolidge became known as "The Delta Lady" and inspired Leon Russell to write a song of the same name for her. It was during this time that she met Kris Kristofferson while filming Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, in which she played Maria; the two married in 1973. With Kristofferson, she recorded several duet albums, two of which earned a Grammy.

Her most successful album, the platinum certified Anytime . . . Anywhere, spawned three Top 10 singles, including "Higher and Higher", "The Way You Do the Things You Do", and the gold certified, "We're All Alone."

She also found success vocalizing for movie soundtracks. In 1983, she recorded the song "All Time High" for the James Bond film Octopussy. The single was one of her two #1 hits and topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts. Coolidge also recorded the love theme from the movie Splash, "Love Came For Me."

In 1997, Coolidge formed Walela, a Native American recording trio, with sister Priscilla and niece Laura Satterfield. Walela means hummingbird in Cherokee. "In the Cherokee nation, women are revered as they age," says Coolidge. "I am in the middle of the process, and I'm trying to embrace it with grace and dignity."

And, along with her hit music, that's exactly what Rita Coolidge brings Follies audiences through March 27, 2010.

We were delighted to learn that our own Ms. Kloss was rated as AARP's #2 story for 2009, trailing only health care reform at #1. Good Times Roll with Fifties Super-Group

Half a century before teen girls went crazy for 'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys, radio airways and record players were dominated by the close harmony and soaring melodies of golden-throated male vocal groups. By any measure, the most successful of these original "boy bands" are The Four Aces, who return to guest star at The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies from January 6 to February 6, 2010.

Like many groups in the early 1950s, The Four Aces began playing locally in the Philadelphia area. Unable to land a recording deal at first, they released their first record, "(It's No) Sin", themselves. When that debut sold more than a million copies, major label Decca Records signed the group in time to release its next platinum record, "Tell Me Why."

By 1958, The Four Aces had seen more than 30 of their records climb the Top-40 charts, and had earned widespread acclaim for their live performances. Among their best known hits were "Heart and Soul," "Perfidia," "Dream," "Mr. Sandman" and "Stranger in Paradise." But the group scored its biggest successes with the title tunes from a pair of hit movies: Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing and Three Coins in the Fountain. Each theme song shot to #1 on the Billboard charts, won the Academy Award for Best Song for its year, and became an international standard.

Since the 1960s, the group has continued to perform and their recordings remain perennial favorites on radio and compact discs. The Four Aces include Fred Diodati, 79, the group's senior member and lead singer; Joe Giglio, 69, high-tenor; Danny Colingo, 65, baritone; and Harry Heisler, 64, bass. Heisler also serves as the quartet's musical conductor.

One of the last "super groups" of the pre-rock 'n' roll era, The Four Aces never abandoned the loving interpretation of well-crafted songs that made them stars and typified mid-20th century pop. Their importance in music history and their enduring popularity with audiences of all ages guarantee a "good time" as they headline the Follies' 19^th edition, Let The Good Times Roll!

Newest Cast Member To Join The Follies

SUZANNE VITALE

"Being onstage at the Follies and having my grandchildren in the audience is my idea of a good time . . . and I'm just going to keep on rolling!"

Suzanne Vitale, 71, is returning to the Plaza Theatre stage this season after performing in the Follies' 15^th season. Previously, she toured with national companies of Li'l Abner and My Fair Lady, eventually traveling with the latter to Canada and Russia. She appeared at the famed Paper Mill Playhouse—just across the river from Broadway—in productions of Oklahoma! and Silk Stockings. In Miami Beach, she danced at Lou Walter's nightclub, Café de Paris (a sister club to his famed Latin Quarter in New York).

Suzanne also appeared in more than 20 musicals and operettas at major stock theaters in the Midwest, including appearances at the Cleveland Musicarnival and the Muni Opera of St. Louis in shows such as South Pacific, Show Boat, Most Happy Fella, Bells Are Ringing, and Naughty Marietta.

After a hiatus during which she raised two daughters and celebrated the birth of four grandchildren, she returned to performing with the St. Louis Strutters, a non-profit charitable dance company.

What is your favorite song from the 40s, 50s or 60s? "'Unchained Melody' conjures such wonderful memories!"

MORE FUN FACTS:

Her 1960 "My Fair Lady" tour through Russia was the first American theatrical troupe to visit that country since the start of the Cold War. Edward Mulhare, who later became known to television audiences as Captain Gregg in the series "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," played the role of Professor Higgins.

Suzanne enjoys scrapbooking and doing cross-stitch. For exercise, she loves to swing dance and go to the gym.

The happiest she's ever been is dancing onstage . . . like she's doing now!

Her favorite TV show is "Dancing With the Stars" and her favorite movie is "Gone With the Wind."

Il Divo is her favorite musical group, and "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables" are her favorite Broadway shows.

"My life's greatest challenge was starting over after the end of my marriage and convincing myself that I was worth the effort. If only I'd known my new life would take me to the Follies!"

"Seabiscuit taught us that you don't throw a life away just because you get banged up a little."

Her funniest experience performing was her (first) opening night at the Follies when her showgirl backpack got hooked to the back screen of the stage and she couldn't walk down the stairs.

"It (life) just gets better because you're wiser; you know more."

Follies Box Office Re-Opens This Monday

Some Follies Fans prefer to visit our Plaza Theatre Box Office in person or speak with an agent in our Reservations Office to book their Follies tickets, so we are happy to announce that those two offices re-open this Monday, September 21. The Costco Connection, a monthly magazine for Costco members, features a photo and story about the Follies' Dorothy Dale Kloss on page 62 of their September issue. With a circulation of over 7.8 million, it's only surpassed in readership by Reader's Digest and AARP's two publications, This magazine periodically includes stories about store members who are also in the Guinness Book of World Records, where Dorothy is currently shown as the world's "Oldest 'Still Performing' Showgirl." According to Dorothy, "Costco is my second home, so what a thrill!"

The 2009 "Best of the Best Awards" were held on June 28, 2009 at the Palm Springs Convention Center and was attended by 350 of Palm Springs’ top tourism professionals. But what is unique about this event is that it honors tourism’s front line employees in such categories as "Volunteer of the Year," "Retail Person of the Year," "Restaurant Front of the House," "Hotel Front of the House," and "Attraction Person of the Year," the latter being awarded to Follies Community Ambassador Marilyn Purdy.

Marilyn has "spread the word" about the Follies for the past three seasons as an ambassador and has also spread the word about Palm Springs for many years around the globe while serving in the Peace Corps and the AmeriCorps Vista . . . all after the age of 67!

According to Marilyn, "I actually attended the Follies on its opening day back in 1992. Little did I know that I’d not only be an employee someday, but that I’d be the recipient of this wonderful award. The Follies is not only an enormously entertaining show, but also sends a message about successful aging that is so important. I am truly honored to be a part of it."

The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies celebrates happy days with our newest edition entitled Let the Good Times Roll! . . . and that is exactly what we're going to do!

The Follies is indeed fortunate to have tens of thousands of loyal fans who visit us annually and, for many, multiple times each season.

Of those, many plan their Palm Springs vacations specifically to see the Follies then enjoy a week of fun and sun in our beautiful desert paradise.

Then, there is one Follies fan who attends the show at least once a season and flies across the entire continent . . . for just one day! Of course, Cindy Shank of Hagerstown, Maryland, is more than just a fan; after some 20+ visits, she is now a cherished member of our Follies Family.

Dorothy Dale Kloss and Riff Markowitz Receive Kentucky Colonel Award

Last week, the ever-youthful Dorothy Dale Kloss and Riff Markowitz were the honored recipients of the prestigious Kentucky Colonel Award, the highest civilian recognition bestowed by the commonwealth. Selected by the Kentucky Governor and Secretary of State, the latter's father, Mr. Merwin Grayson, made the presentation during an evening Follies performance. Mid-speech, though, Miss Kloss decided to demonstrate her earlier gymnastics training by stepping off the stage ledge into the orchestra pit shaft. Never one to let a "one-liner" opportunity slip by, the now-supine Dorothy looked up at Riff and announced, "I guess I fell for you on this one." Moments later, she demonstrated "her stuff" by performing her most powerful tap solo to date – to an awe-struck audience!

When it comes to show-stopping entertainment, you name it, John Davidson has done it! And the "it" is just what audiences will see when this multi-talented dynamo debuts at The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies on March 10, playing through May 9, 2009.

Starting out 44 years ago, fresh from a degree in Theater Arts at Denison University, Davidson co-starred in the Broadway show, Foxy, opposite the legendary Bert Lahr.

From there the credits for the everlastingly youthful singer and actor multiply exponentially.

He has three achieving children in John, Jr., a business consultant; Jennifer, a professional ice skater; and Ashleigh, who appeared with her father on the national tour of State Fair and, while still a high school honors student, has her sights on a career in the arts.

Through it all the Big Smile of Papa has dominated. You don't think of handsome, mop-haired John Davidson without envisioning the beaming countenance that exudes natural exuberance to frame his unique singing and performing talent. Last Friday, we were excited by a return visit from Dancing With the Stars professional dancer Kym Johnson. Getting ready for the March 9 premier of her hit ABC series' eighth season, this was Kym's final respite before the grueling ten-week competition. We encourage everyone to call in his or her votes for our "Adopted Aussie" and star dance partner, David Alan Grier.

She and Follies cast members were observed huddled in the theater lobby after the show, so maybe our veteran dancers were sharing with her a few of their prize-winning tips learned after 60- and 70 -year careers!

January 15 Declared "Dorothy Kloss Day" in Palm Springs

On January 15, 2009, Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet declared that day to be "Dorothy Kloss Day" for residents and visitors of Palm Springs, California.

Presenting her with a proclamation onstage during the show's third act in front of newspaper reporters and television news crews, Dorothy received a standing ovation from the Follies audience who attended this very special performance.

"Dorothy Kloss is an inspiration!" said Pougnet. "Her example and outlook on life is a true testament to the fact that getting older just means getting better! That's why it is an honor to proclaim today as ‘Dorothy Kloss Day' in Palm Springs."

"I can't believe it . . . I'm just thrilled," Kloss told the Mayor and the Follies Man. "Thank you for this wonderful honor."

Follies "On The Road"

The Follies Ambassador Team travels far-and-wide "spreading the word" about this world-famous show and serves as proud representatives at special events and functions.

Recently, Ambassador Manager Dolores Dey and Ambassador Rex Waggoner motored over 1,000 miles through Arizona and Nevada (traveling Route 66 wherever possible!), telling folks about the Follies' newest edition Get Your Kicks! Along the way, they hosted "behind the scenes" educational presentations in three different towns to packed houses!

The Follies has been a long-time sponsor of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in nearby Twentynine Palms, California. Recently, the base again invited Follies representatives as part of their second annual Sponsorship Appreciation Day – a fascinating daylong base tour, which this year, included attendance at the 2008 Marine Birthday Pageant.

Follies Ambassadors Marilyn Purdy and Adam Mick, both Korean War Veterans, enjoyed the gracious hospitality shown them by Brig. Gen. Charles Gurganus and all base personnel.

Special Note: For those of you who might like the opportunity to say "thank you" to Marine families, the Follies is again hosting the annual visit by spouses of deployed Marines during the evening performance on Wednesday, December 3. Under the auspices of the base's "Operation Enduring Families" program, this and other activities help ease the difficulty of separation from loved ones serving abroad, especially during the holiday season. Dorothy Kloss Wows 'em at Eisenhower Medical Center

On September 17^th at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences on the Eisenhower Medical Center Campus in Rancho Mirage, the Follies' Dorothy Kloss was invited to speak as part of the Center's Healthy Living Series.

Hall of Fame journalist and Rancho Mirage resident Murray Olderman was in the audience that evening and scribed his impressions of her address to this sell-out crowd.

Since this season’s Follies theme was announced, we’ve heard countless other folks tell us what Route 66 means to them and the cherished memories it conjures.

Route 66 Rendezvous Recalls Earlier Era

There was a time when cars had fender skirts, curb feelers, and Continental kits; parking brakes were called emergency brakes; and accelerator pedals were called foot feeds. While these terms have long since passed into our collective memories, they were still very much in evidence the past four days at San Bernardino’s 19th Annual Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous.

With 1,900 classic cars on parade, hundreds of food and merchandise vendors, entertainment recalling “days gone by” and half-a-million spectators, nostalgia is apparently still quite hip!

And — for the first time this year — the Follies was honored to be a part of it.

With Showgirl-In-Waiting Belinda Smith-Schober (actually, the Follies’ “still too young to be in the show” assistant choreographer) and our own "Veronica" proudly representing the Follies at VIP events and riding in vintage vehicles, joined by Follies ambassadors in the Follies own vendor booth, we visited with thousands of fans who plan to “rendezvous” next in Palm Springs when the Follies begins its own tribute to the magical Route 66 era.

But before you leave the house, be sure to unplug the percolator.

Jim Conkle, Founder and President of the Route 66 Preservation Foundation, guested on the "Baxter In the Morning" radio show on KCAA 1050 AM Inland Empire on September 2 to talk about the upcoming Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino and the Follies' participation. This is the largest Route 66 Event in the U.S. with an expected attendance of approximately 500,000.

The Things We Did This Summer

Officially, there are still a few more weeks of summer, but for the Follies cast, it has ended, with the first day of rehearsals.

But they made good use of every day since the season closing in May as they describe below. And be sure to click here to view a slideshow of some of their travels and activities.

Natascha Ahlborn

Wherever I visited, I took dance class.

I always enjoy Munich in the summer. I took there some wonderful dance classes. I also visited my sister and niece who live just outside of Frankfurt…and more dance class. Then I went to Paris for a week and was thrilled to see a very famous ballet performed in an amphitheater under the beautiful French sky. And I took dance class.

Upon my return to the States, I spent two-and-a-half weeks in New York. I saw South Pacific, which received a standing reception at Lincoln Center. And then Mary Poppins. Such fun! And, of course, my favorite dance class in New York where I was the most old!

Wayne Albritton

I watched Rachael Ray this summer to try and learn to be a good househusband now that the missus is back to work full time. And, oh yes, spending five-and-a-half weeks with the plumber trying to find the leak under our house’s foundation!

Judy Bell

I had the summer of my life. Went to visit my son in Idaho and we went on his boat to the lake, barbecued, fished, played banjo and guitar…what a trip.

Next went to Orlando, then New York for shows (Mary Poppins) and carousing with girlfriends at Times Square, Central Park and Washington Square.

Then to Sacramento.

Another trip, this time to Arkansas for my 71st birthday.

Next to Las Vegas to see shows (O, Love, and Danny Gans) and more carousing.

Finally, to Optimum Health Institute in Lemon Grove for several days of fasting and spiritual growth.

Now I’m ready to get back to dancin’ and singin’!

Leila Burgess

I spent my summer in the cool breezes of the beach in Carlsbad, relaxing and shopping. Is there any other way? Oh yes, and working.

Hank Brunjes

I spent four weeks in New York and went Latin dancing every night. I also attended the Jerome Robbins exhibit at Lincoln Center and saw video of me as “Riff” in West Side Story. What an honor! Then I spent four weeks at a fishing lodge 400 miles north of Winnipeg. I saw moose, eagles, bears and wolves. I even had an Indian guide!

Leonard Crofoot

I made my annual trip to help out my mother on her ranch in Bend, Oregon. As usual, I cut weeds.

The rest of the time was spent in Culver City, California, with my wife Robin and dog Zou Zou.

Randy Doney

The highlight of my summer was performing at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood, California, with my long-time friend Mitzi Gaynor. It was for an upcoming television broadcast entitled The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Presents TV MOVES! Live.

They showed a video of a number by famed Broadway choreographer Danny Daniels. Live, in front of the video screen, three dancers learned a number in tandem with the video. Then, at the end, the three dancers exited, and Mitzi, Alton and I finished the number. The audience jumped to their feet screaming. Very exciting.

I worked with Mitzi for six years as one of her Four Fellows and did many of her TV specials. A lot of history here.

Dick France

We went to Tucson, Arizona, to visit friends this summer. Then returned home and worked on my oil painting.

Also, my wife, Karrie, and I went to Las Vegas to visit one of our past students who now dances at the Tropicana. It was wonderful to relax by the pool at the Mirage Resort and Casino.

Jill Gordon

I spent my summer at the beach in Ventura where I rented a house. I even attended the county fair! Sitting in the sand and reading books is my idea of heaven…other than being onstage at the Plaza Theatre!

I also attended the Body World exhibit at the California Science Center. As a dancer, I was especially fascinated seeing the skeletal and musculature of the human body.

Glenda Guilfoyle

I celebrated my 75th birthday with family at my daughter’s house in Valencia, California. It was attended by all seven of my children, my grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

I also went to Hawaii with three of my daughters and two grandchildren.

It was a wonderful summer!

Marcia Harp

I had what might be called an Academic Summer. I went back to visit the dance department at Ohio State University for the first time in 44 years!!!

I, also, attended a high school reunion while visiting family in Barnesville, Ohio. Even saw the restaurant once owned by my daddy...where the juke box jumped with all the music of Route 66!!!

To top it off...completed the categorizing on the rough draft of my book entitled "Where Was I When I Needed ME."

John Kendrick

I went to Juneau, Alaska, where I zip-lined 140 feet in the air through the forest! You can travel many thousands of feet on wires strung from tree-to-tree.

Dorothy Kloss

What a magical trip, Ken, my roommate and I had in Munich.

We saw the German version of the Glenn Miller Band. The drummer is American and–move over Gene Krupa! After the show, we went backstage and met the leader then went out for a drink together.

Of course, the most wonderful moment was when we got off the underground and entered the central square, Marienplatz (St. Mary’s Square), and viewed the glockenspiel.

We also toured Salzburg. It’s a lovely city and much to see—Mozart’s hometown. We also saw sites from the The Sound of Music.

Now I’m looking forward to the Follies beginning and, come what may when the show goes on hiatus again, we’ll be off on another adventure!

Joni Naber

My husband and I flew to Cabo San Lucas in June and stayed at the beautiful Finisterra Hotel. We loved the weather (90's most of the time during the day and cool at night). We cruised, ate delicious food, had a Margarita (or two!), swam and relaxed.

In July, we toured Monterey and Carmel, and enjoyed a trip down the coastal highway where we had dinner in a lovely restaurant built on the side of a mountain.

Now back to business!

Jill Owens

It was a wet summer. We went back to our house in Iowa only to see everything around us flooded as the river crested its banks. And then, when we returned to Palm Springs, our house flooded after a freak summer monsoon. What a mess!

While in Iowa, though, I was inspired by my mother-in-law who, at 95, runs circles around me. She plays piano five hours a day in a department store in addition to a full schedule of teaching and other performing engagements.

Lark Romero

After receiving the phenomenal news in late May that I made the Follies cast, the preparation of moving to Palm Springs and tying up loose ends in Orange County have consumed my summer. With dear friends and family having "farewell" parties, it has been an exciting blur to say the least.

I did manage to spend four days in San Francisco shopping, attending the theater, shopping, viewing the Frida Kahlo exhibit at SFMOMA, dining, and did I mention shopping? One of my goals was to find a bad meal in the City by the Bay; that mission has yet to have been accomplished!

Glenda Guilfoyle, age 75 and soon beginning her 14^th season as a Palm Springs Follies Long-Legged Lovely, was a recent guest on the Growing Bolder Radio Show, broadcasting on WFLA and KBZT, two of Florida’s most powerful AM radio stations. She discussed her early career as a Radio City Rockette, being handpicked by Walt Disney to dance in the Golden Horseshoe Review at his soon-to-open Disneyland Park, appearing on TV specials with the likes of Fred Astaire and Rosemary Clooney, and now still hoofing at the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies nine shows a week.

"World's Oldest Showgirl" Keynotes Tourism Conference

The Palm Springs Follies’ Dorothy Kloss, age 85, was the closing keynote speaker for the Spotlight on the Southwestern USA conference held at the Palm Springs Hyatt Regency Suites in late May. This annual event brings together tour operators and suppliers from around North America to build relationships and learn about new tourism destinations.

In her address, Kloss told her rapt audience about the Follies audition process, the professional histories of fellow cast members and how they rehearse each new Follies show, while peppering her comments with amusing anecdotes about backstage at the historic Plaza Theatre.

She also described her own history of starting “in the biz’” (when Calvin Coolidge was President!), teaching a then-young Bob Fosse how to tap, her first big break at the Palmer House Empire Room, performing with the USO during the War, “visiting the boys” in military hospitals and her personal hardships, including beating colon cancer.

Kloss’ message was one of hope, humor and inspiration. A tour operator from Arizona told her afterwards that a regular tour passenger was battling his own cancer and couldn't attend this year’s Follies but Kloss was his inspiration. She immediately scribbled a note to him stating that she expected him to attend this year and she would be waiting. Kloss even gave fledgling “tappers” an impromptu lesson in an adjacent hall.

An afternoon spent with the indomitable Dorothy Kloss is not one anyone soon forgets!

Steinbeck called it The Mother Road. It was nicknamed The Great Diagonal Way, The Main Street of America and The Will Rogers Highway. Most commonly (and officially), though, it was known as Route 66.

Established in 1926 and decommissioned in 1985, it traveled from Chicago to L.A. – 2,448 miles across the heartland of America.

As always, the Follies presents the most brilliant and unusual variety acts from around the globe.

From New York's Big Apple Circus, the Moscow Circus and, most recently, NBC's Late Night With Conan O'Brien, Irina Markova and her canines will be making their Follies debut.

And, by popular demand, you won't want to miss the encore engagement by everyone's favorite ventriloquist, Mr. Sammy King, and his wiseacre-feathered parrot, "Francisco."
