This is my second time in Sydney (the first being when I just got to Australia, four months ago).

Both times I purchased a MyMulti card for a week, and used the 400 line to avoid the train toll.

Thank you so much Pyko for this (old) rant. It explained to me why the public transport prices are so messed up, as well as why there are no information signs pointing to the cheaper public transportation.

I wish that the NSW citizens would do something about it... But I guess this nonsense will go on for a while

Hm, generally I find I have a rough idea of what I want/need to do, haven't had that many cases where I've need to do open ended research.

Though what I did do when I was doing some research/exploring was to have small goals to achieve with the research - eg. understand terminology better, read more about X etc. If it is very open ended, I try to time box it to one or two pomodoros and re-assess what I have learnt in order to see if I should be looking into something different.

The break after 25 minutes also helped because especially when researching I find my brain starts getting overloaded very quickly, so the break gives my brain a rest and sometimes helps make things clearer :)

I've been trying pomodoro these last few months too. I'm not sure it's working for me as well.
It works in those cases where I know how to do what I need to do and just need to get on with it. The moment I need to do some research, brainstorming or google for help, it all just falls apart! (Do you have that at all?)

blue mountains return trip (2 hours each way from central station) after 9 am $11.60 total. 15 min train journey to air port from central $15.80 one way complete utter rip off. I agree with the belief that they probably are trying to make the trains appear to be the only real option for getting there, even bus stops dont have maps to show you where you are, where the buses go etc i thought that was particularly bizarre

System 1 might make mistakes but system 2 is exhausting! So hopefully, in time this whole blog writing thing will be an automatic reflex and I will no longer spend half a day writing a single comment? XD

Just to add, I recently read The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt and the book has a nice metaphor for System 1 and system 2: The elephant and the rider.

The elephant is a reactive creature running on instinct and emotion.
The rider is more directive, with the ability to plan, reason and reflect.

The two don't always agree on where to go.
The elephant is bigger. It always get's its way.
A clever rider uses his energy to gradually train the elephant rather than force it to do what it does not want to do.
When elephant and rider move together, life is easy.

Gee that could make a cute children's book!
It shall be titled: The big elephant tantrum
