Provincetown Historic Walking Tour

Every Wednesday of July and August, The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, in partnership with the Cape Cod National Seashore, offers a walking tour of historic sights in Provincetown. This season, the PMPM is introducing several “firsts”, so this year’s participants get to see a lot more during their tour. For one, the $10 admission includes a walking tour and a Museum tour. Also, with the Town Hall closing for renovation, walkers will get the chance to hear the story of the art colony while viewing Charles Hawthorne’s dramatic painting The Crew of the Philomena Manta in the Museum’s east gallery. The painting is on loan from the Town of Provincetown during the renovations. We’re also including The Provincetown Library in our itinerary for the first time where walkers will be able to see the remarkable half-scale model of the Rose Dorothea and the impressive Lipton Cup she won in the Fishermen’s Race. The tour lasts about 1 ½ hours and includes a variety sites in addition to the ones previously mentioned. The tour is not handicapped accessible as our visits to historic buildings include many steps. Reservations are required as space is limited. Please telephone 508-487-1310 to make your reservation.

Steven Fales in Mormon Amercian Princess - A Cabaret Confection Provincetown

An Oxy-Mormon, Fales confesses “I’m 100% Mormon White Trash! God has seen me through excommunication, divorce, prostitution and drugs, now we’re working on narcissism—and it’s not going well!” Mormon American Princess is an exploration of our self-absorbed society using the multi-talented Fales as a microcosm. But with the help of his new Higher Power (She’s fabulous!), he’s beginning to see the light as he continues to put Utah on the MAP! This hilarious and touching cabaret confection includes original songs like “The Excommunication Polka”, “Narcissus”, “Cult Rap”, and “You and Utah.” And such standards as “I Don’t Know How To Love Him”, “Fifty Percent”, “Son of a Preacher Man” and outrageous medleys and parodies of your favorite Broadway show tunes including Steven’s popular “Mormon Broadway Medley” and his signature “Mormon American Princess.”

The cabaret act has received critical acclaim at Upright Cabaret in Los Angeles and Joe’s Pub in New York as well as engagements in San Diego, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City and will play the Metropolitan Room in New York this fall.

Steven Fales' acclaimed one-man play Confessions of a Mormon Boy has played major cities across the country and internationally. A break-out hit at the New York Fringe Festival (Overall Excellence Award for Solo Show) and directed by Tony Award-winner Jack Hofsiss, the play went on to a highly acclaimed Off-Broadway run at the SoHo Playhouse (Outer Critics Circle Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance). The play was performed as a sold-out benefit for The Point Foundation at Lincoln Center and was nominated for the Oscar Wilde Award for Outstanding New Writing for the Theatre at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. Fales’ book Confessions of a Mormon Boy (Alyson Books) was a Lambda Literary Award Finalist.

A classically trained actor with numerous regional stage credits from around the country, Fales received his M.F.A. in acting from the University of Connecticut. He trained on Scholarship to the Boston Conservatory and received his B.F.A. from Brigham Young University. An excommunicated Mormon, he currently lives in New York City where he flies his kids in from Salt Lake City via jetBlue every chance he can get!

“Fales possesses a beautiful lyric tenor, perfectly suited to his very theatrical delivery. The musical numbers matched his narrative with great dramatic effect . . . a confident self-realized cabaret performer.” – Cabaret Scenes Magazine

“Stevens voice commands and dominates . . . . flawless and engaging. His stage presence and delivery transcend the self-centered pleadings . . . the humor in his compositions is clever and incisive.” – San Francisco Bay Times

“Steven Fales is a dream come true for gay rights advocates: provocative in his work, articulate and humorous onstage, and appealingly handsome in person. MAP is a crowning moment.” – EDGE.com

“Showtime, Broadway, and HBO all rolled up into one great big evening of song and laughter. MAP is exuberant and supremely entertaining.” – BeyondChron.org

“It’s quite an achievement to showcase an ego that is larger than Carol Channing’s in such a small room.” – Goldstar Audience Review – Four Stars!

Provincetown Bear Week 2009

Provincetown Bears prepares a special welcome for Bears to one of North America's most famous gay resort towns. We work with local club managers to program different music and atmosphere for a week of parties. We also allow time to relax and have a true vacation. Our schedule leaves plenty of free time to enjoy the town, restaurants, cabaret shows, National Seashore park, beaches, and the daily gatherings at hotel pool decks. All Provincetown bars and clubs are 21 years old and older (strictly enforced), including the two hotel pools used for Bear Week. Public meeting places such as the active street scene, Town Hall benches, Spiritus Pizza and beaches are available for younger cubs to enjoy. Bars, clubs and restaurants are all smoke-free areas in Massachusetts; provisions are often available for smoking outdoors.

Traditional highlights of Provincetown in summer include the daily T-Dance and nightly 1am pizza and cruising at Spiritus. The hotels, pools and clubs are mostly within a short walk, and Commercial Street becomes one of our primary venues as a place to see and meet friends.

Registration is available on-line until June 21, 2009, and tickets for most individual events will be available at the door. Some hotels are fully booked, but many rooms are still available in Provincetown at guest houses and hotels. See Tourist Info for more details.

Please check on-line and with programs at the event for final schedule as some changes might occur. Programs will be available at the Bear Week Info Booth July 11-18, 2009.

12th Annual Secret Garden Tour Presented by The Provincetown Art Association and Museum

Celebrate PAAM's 12th Annual Secret Garden Tour on Sunday, July 12th with a double header garden experience. The day begins with a walking tour of gorgeous Secret Gardens in Provincetown's west end from 10am-3pm. Visitors are then invited to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to tour the Art of the Garden, an exhibition of floral works in air-conditioned galleries. All proceeds from the event benefit PAAM exhibitions and educational programs. For twelve years, the Secret Garden Tour has led guests through hidden stone paths and crooked wooden walkways into borders and beds of specimen plants, common and exotic flowers, and lush greenery. This year, the owners and tenders of fragrant and visually stunning Provincetown gardens plan to welcome more than 500 visitors. The gardens selected represent the "best of the west," as all are located in Provincetown's beautiful west end, making the tour quite walkable from PAAM and nearby parking lots. Free parking has been provided at Benson, Young and Downs Insurance Agency and Gately-McHoul's Funeral home, found at the end of Harry Kemp Way. A fleet of shuttle-cars will make continuous stops between the parking lots and gardens throughout the day. Tickets to the Secret Garden Tour are just $30, and include admission to PAAM's galleries for the Art of the Garden exhibition. This event continues to be a success year after year due in part to the kindness of more than fifty dedicated volunteers. All proceeds from the event support PAAM exhibitions and education programs. Event details are available at www.paam.org. Call 508.487.1750 for tickets. PAAM is located at 460 Commercial Street in Provincetown.

Leslie Jordans return to the stage - FULL OF GIN and REGRET - with east coast debut at the Provincetown Crown and Anchors Paramount Nightclub

Fresh off of his record setting 35 city national show tour and as a first time author, both titled My Trip Down the Pink Carpet, beloved Emmy Award winning actor/comedian LESLIE JORDAN returns to one of his favorite traipsing grounds, Provincetown, to kick off his latest stage show. Aptly titled FULL OF GIN & REGRET, Jordan continues to regale adoring audiences while commanding center stage, weaving tales both personal and public about his astonishing life and career.

Jordan is a small town man with a giant propensity for scene stealing. Best known for his bravura recurring role as Karen’s nemesis, Beverley Leslie, on Will & Grace (for which he won his Emmy for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, 2006) as well as the now iconic Brother Boy of both the original film Sordid Lives and the recent Logo TV sensation, Sordid Lives, The Prequel, he has also made dozens of memorable appearances in commercials and hits shows such as Alley McBeal, Boston Legal, Murphy Brown, Monk and as a series regular on Hearts Afire.

The self-proclaimed “gayest man I know” has publicly chronicled his start in show biz from when he boarded a Greyhound bus bound for Hollywood with $1,200 sewn into his underpants to the heights of his lucrative and varied career. His pocket-size physique and inescapable talent for delivering high camp and hilarity single him “out” by choice and simply by being himself. Success has not been without its dangerous temptations along the way; a self-proclaimed former battle with various addictions, self-loathing and even some brief jail time get equal billing to the many other, now infamous Jordan tales. His storytelling of the famous, the high (and not so high) and mighty is salaciously spicey, rollicking fun, fast paced, full of wit, Southern style panache and plenty of biting asides.

FULL OF GIN & REGRET elaborates upon the life experience of this rare individual who tells it like it is, was, needs to be and continues to be; comically overwrought childhood agonies, offbeat observations and most dashingly, revealing celebrity encounters which keeps his audiences clamoring for more. True to form, Jordan’s latest collection will certainly not disappoint!

FULL OF GIN & REGRET will make its East Coast debut at Provincetown’s Crown & Anchor Paramount Nightclub on Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19. Show time is 8:00 P.M. with an additional performance on the 19th at 10:00 PM. Tickets and information are available by visiting the club website atwww.onlyatthecrown or by calling (508) 487-1430.

Support Community Radio on Cape Cod - give to the Provincetown WOMR membership drive!

To provide Cape Cod residents and visitors with the highest possible quality community-based radio programming possible - offering a diverse mix of music, news, and cultural programming. In 1976 a small band of radio visionaries was inspired to create a community radio station in Provincetown. It took several years for them to realize their dream, but finally WOMR (OuterMost community Radio) went on the air on March 21st 1982 with 1000 watts at a frequency of 91.9 FM. In November of 1995, WOMR moved to 92.1 FM in order to raise power to 6000 watts thus reaching a much wider audience on Cape Cod and the South Shore. To improve our signal from Orleans to Hyannis, we plan to install a second transmitter in Orleans within the year which would broadcast our signal at 91.3 FM. Over the years hundreds of people have contributed their time and talents to create WOMR's diverse and special programming. There are very few, if any, radio stations like WOMR in the country. We are a non-profit organization, not affiliated with any educational institution, and derive our financial support from listeners, businesses and grant making organizations like the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Pledge to WOMR now! www.womr.org
