Video : Maxis / EA Says "Simcity Impossible To Play Offline" Modder Proves Otherwise!

So you might have heard about Maxis and EA regurgitating the "No Single Player" line when it comes to Simcity. For Example Maxis dev's stated the following:

“With the way that the game works, we offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers so that the computations are off the local PCs and are moved into the cloud. It wouldn’t be possible to make the game offline without a significant amount of engineering work by our team.”

"Significant amount of engineering" my ass. Case in point, an anonymous maxis insider source claimed it was fairly easy for Maxis/EA to make Simcity offline and that the server stuff wasn't needed. Of course the community isn't believing any of this mis-information, if not out right lies, from a company who in the past has been less then honorable in dealing with their customers and employees. Nor should the community accept the "company line" that's being spewed forth, especially when Maxis/EA spout off how the DRM is there for "our" benefit. BAH!

So just to show how idiotic Maxis/EA's position really is, a resourceful modder and reddit user by the name of UKAzzer posted a video showing that offline is indeed possible and with minimal effort:

So with a little bit of package editing within SimCity, and a little playing about in the code, it's possible to enable debug mode. I linked the activation to the "Help Center" button in the main menu for ease. Most debug features are disabled without having an actual developer's build (they have terraforming tools etc. available in the full developer build!), but a few things do still work - including editing the main highways.
Not only that - but you can edit the highways ANYWHERE - even outside of your city boundary... and even if you quit the game and log back in later, it's all saved safely on the server.
This shows that highway editing will be easily possible, AND that editing outside of the artificially small city boundaries should be very viable too.
Other things I have modded out with a quick change: Unlimited time to remain disconnected (won't get booted at 20 minutes, can now be disconnected "forever"). Population count now shows REAL figure, not the "artificially inflated" figure. My large cities have a population of about 15k now, not 100k :P

In a nod to the long running crime drama series Law & Order the DayZ developer diary starts out with the notorious inrto, then goes on to show you some of the new things they're working on, and a few things they "said" they wouldn't put in the video, but ultimately did anyway. They mention such things as possible use of dogs, fingerprints, and a hint of a crafting system along with zombie pathfinding.

Video : Mis-Adventures In Simcity (5)! Season 1 Episode 1 "The Dawning"

So I my friends and myself pre-ordered the new Simcity game as soon as it was humanly possibly after seeing gorgeous videos of some of the pre-released developer videos. Each time they released a new video we all salivated over how awesome the game was going to look and just imagined how cool the game would be to play.

Then we got into the closed beta, and while fun, they were somewhat disappointing and frustrating. You had a limited set of items you could use and you could only play for one hour! Every city I created just got going and was extremely interesting at the one hour mark, and then the game would end. I wanted to punch several babies and kittens after a couple of hours of that again and again.

However, today is the official release date as of 9:00 pm PST of the Simcity game! YAY! Despite the reddit hate postings here from everyone who didn't get the ability to download the game as soon as it hit midnight around the globe, or who purchased through Amazon. My friends and I merely waited and around 10:00 pm PST were awarded with a now ready to download icon in the origin client.

So below is my first play through, if you like what you see please rate and subscribe as that encourages me to make even more Mis-Adventure videos!

Over at Joystiq they have a video up of some of the multiplayer activities for the new SimCity game.

Overall I was hoping there might be more to multiplayer in the new SimCity than just competing against other players/friends, but that might be the case unless they reveal more about multiplayer the closer we get to the release date of March 5th. Check out the video below to see how you can play in other regions then allow friends to take over that region and continue building that city. There is mention of shared goals but that is slated for a future video...

Video : Future of Minecraft, Future Of Mod API, And Minecraft 1.5 Info!

Here are the two videos from Minecon 2012 from Paris. The first is the "Future of Minecraft Updates" and the second is the "Future of Mod API".

From the Future Minecraft Update panel we learned that Minecraft 1.5 is called the "Redstone Update!" and is not likely to be out before Christmas 2012. :( Possibly a January time frame was indicated.

The update will include:

More predictable and consistent in redstone behavior/timeing and logic.
Redstone signal strength will matter, they want to make it more analog like.
Capacitor Block
Weighted Pressure Plates
Improved Minecarts
Daylight Detector
Fireworks
???

It sounds like there are a lot of fun things to look forward in the next version of the minecraft!

Video - George Lucas On The Lucasfilm Disney Buyout!

Over at StarWars.com's youtube channel, they released a three minute video of George's take on why this is a good thing for Lucasfilm, *cough* Sorry just had a tickle in my throat, its was as if a million 70's era kids just felt their childhood *~~shat~~* *trampled* upon, *cough*. Here is the video clip:

So as Lucas is stepping down/retiring, a Mrs Kathleen Kennedy takes the helm. George goes on to say "When I first made Star Wars everyone in Hollywood said that this is a movie Disney should have made."

But George, I'm sure your younger-self , purer, albeit much poorer self, would have scoff'd at that idea. Was't that idea, to hell with Hollywood, and its perception and methodology of making films that you as well as the cadre of young new film makers back in the day strove for, to essentially "prove them wrong". Not sure if this is wisdom or a brain vessel pop'n...

George goes on to say "Well, I said I'd never do any more Star Wars Films, BUT that doesn't mean I wouldn't let others do it!" Kathleen says "We're ABSOLUTELY making more Star Wars Movies". Kathleen goes on to say that its important to "protect" these characters, which I read as we'll be lawsuit crazy if you anger the Disney entity and send cease and desists on anything vaguely star wars-ish. DIY, Golden "Leia" Bikini, DENIED! I hear there are lots of European and Asian people served with papers to stop using the name Han! (just kidding)

Kathleen earlier indicated that "Disney defines Family Entertainment." Or put another way, what ever brainwashed version of what Disney is promoting these days as "Family Entertainment." I mean it seems they've had issues with what "family friendly" is since Disney's inception, but for a more recent view just look at the tripe that is on the Disney /ABC Channels. This "entertainment" is pitched to their demographic on a daily basis, a demo which they created called the "tweens". It should never had been one. I curse Disney and Nickelodeon for "tweens".

I'm not hopeful of the future of the Star Wars brand, perhaps they will leave Lucasfilm alone like they've done with Pixar, but I doubt it. There is to much cash to be made from the public masses. As an example, the last few Pixar films have been "meh", Brave? It was visual eye candy only, the story was pretty much Finding Nemo for tween girls.

So be prepared to get your jedi robes all in a bunch as we're going to be seeing Episodes 7-9, 10-12, 13-15... coming to a theater soon, then on dvd, then on blue-ray, then on dvd/blue-ray box set, and whatever media format we have by them. I can't wait to see Grand Dad Skywalker talking about how in the old days you had to stack rocks, run around with little green dudes on your back, and lift x-wings out of swamps to get your force cred. Ug.

Makes me want to go check out a Star Trek Convention! (kidding!!)

Video Game : Slender - The Eight Pages

So here is something that is totally perfect for Halloween full of spooky and scary fun!

The game is called "Slender - The Eight Pages" and its pretty freaky to play. It's a single player game and the idea is that you are investigating the myth of the slender man and you've tracked him down and are collecting evidence to prove his existence via 8 notes/scribblings that you find in the game, the bad news is that slender man is always watching!

As you progress the music gets more dire and things get more intense, and then you find your second note/clue! BOOM! He's behind you! RUN! Don't LOOK BAAAAC!!! *ssssshhhhhh......*

To get the most bang for your buck (um its free!) definitely play with the sound up, and all the lights off in your house and see how far you can get before the slender man gets you!!!

So here we are at a defensible position inside a air plane hanger. We all have decent weapons, which shows that you CAN succeed in DayZ, WITHOUT cheating or hacking! It was a pretty fun session, we had four people in the game and in the same location, and we actually worked kind of like a team. Check out the video below, many kills were made and we were finally on the winning end! YAY!

Video : MisAdventures In DayZ - Firefight Of The Stooges!

This is a short set of clips from a couple of gaming sessions with my buddies where we're getting our asses handed to us, mostly, mostly... The third snippet of video is interesting in that we were hold up in a general store, its night out, so everything is pitch black where you almost can't see anything.

About 20 min earlier, and which I didn't get on video, I was at the back of the store and found a revolver, which I already had. So I called out to my one friend to come and pick it up. He thought I was out side of the store and ran out of the front door and into two dudes with long rifles that were heading into the store. Needless to say a "pop, pop" later and he was dead. My other friend and I logged out ASAP.

30 min later we decided to log back in, we didn't go to another server to move around and then log back into the original server or anything like that, we were just going to log back in on the same server and figured the two dudes were gone by now. Granted, we're always at the shopping center for about an hour ourselves, but hey, it was night out maybe we can get the drop on the guys if they are still there...

This is where the 3rd snippet starts. So I made it in, no one around. Cool. I then move to behind the counter and glanced in the back room, empty. Sweet! My one friend decided that he'll come back on too, and at this moment I see some crawler zombie make its way in, I start to switch to my axe, unfortunately it wasn't a crawler zombie and was indeed one of the guys from the previous encounter! He then peeks around the shelves and starts flinging bullets at me, all the while my friend is trying to login, who's in front of me, and is subject to latency gawds to see if he's going to make it in or not. Seconds later we're both dead and he never made it past the loading screen!

So the take away here is that when logging out as soon as you hit abort you're out of the game, when logging in you're vunerable for 5-10 seconds before you're in the game, so beware! ;)

Video : BEN PURDY's Real Life Minecraft Block

This is a neat project! Bed Purdy took a projector, an arduino, and a piezo element and made something aweosme!

Ben's project allows you to smack a real world box, that looks like various minecraft blocks by way of the projector, and as if you're in minecraft show the animation and sound you would hear when chipping and breaking your way through the minecraft materials. Hehe.

Video : DayZ Double Whammy!

So recently I got together with a bunch of friends on a few DayZ servers and we had a devilishly good time playing the game again. We're trying to get a group of at least 6 people on all at the same time and then meet up all in once spot in DayZ. Those that play the game know that might be a task unobtainable as people get sidetracked where they spawn and then there are those pesky zombies and other players that get in your way.

In the first video we establish ourselves in the city Electro, after a few failed attempts to meet up in game. Once we found the hospital, general store and a nice little apt with no running water, we then proceeded to take pot shots at passer by's who investigate one of the bodies in the street. The bodies that just so happen to be one of our players who can't seem to stay on the top of the building without falling off and killing himself.

The second video is the attempt to meet up with a new player Wizzle, and then much server madness as people logout as soon as they are shot, flashes of other people maybe trying to login, and zombie pushing players through walls who then fall to their deaths, (well sort of).

Video - Guild Wars 2 Play Video! 3 Day Headstart!

Here is some quick video I did during the 3 day head start of the release of Guild Wars 2. Apologies, that I didn't figure out the hide GUI button sooner!

The game is gorgeous and very fun to play. Its very easy to slip into and get going with creating a very customizable character. Navigation is a breeze, and the starting story lines are engrossing.

Also something to note that the crafting system is the first to allow you to level to 80 in a MMO, you don't have to leave the city confines if you choose not to! Some of the nice things are that you can send crafting materials straight to your bank box from anywhere in the world via the "gear" icon in your backpack and selecting the collections option. Then when at a crafting station you can then open up your bank box and get those crafting items you need without the needless running back and forth! Brilliant!

I haven't encountered any real glaring issues yet with this game except for the occasional error connection, but even the "patch" system is nicely done if they have to do a "hot fix" mid stride, they alert you the game shuts down, patches, reloads and you're back into the action in minutes.

The only minor quibble is that upon error connection or when switching from "zone to zone" you might get put into a "holding queue" for that zone which only means that you're not in the "main zone" and if your friends are in the main zone you won't be able to group up. Your friends can, of course join you in the holding queue if they wish and you can join up there. Eventually you'll get a message when a spot opens up in the "main zone" and you'll see a loading screen and then appear right where you were in the holding queue. Now can see world vs world info, group with friends if they're in the main zone too, etc. This seems to happen way too often with only to be prompted to join the main queue minutes after being put in to the holding queue. Its frankly distracting. I'd rather just be put in a zone and not prompted about going to the main zone, and let me check manually to see if I want to go to the main zone if a spot is open. Just a thought.

Here is the video footage I snagged while playing, its a mix of interesting things to see, vista view points panorama, map overland views and descriptions, and some other interesting combat action I took part of. There is even a volcano! (this is all in the human starting area)

Video : Mis-Adventures in MineZ - A Minecraft Mod Based On The Game DayZ

You've got your peanut butter in my chocolate, and you've got your chocolate in my peanut butter! Two great tastes you say?! You Betcha! The creators of MineZ have a hit on their hands I think. (you can find both private and public severs to play on at that link!)

It would seem they've taken the concept of DayZ and melded it with the game of Minecraft. While minecraft is inherently a survival game per se, this mod takes it to a whole new level! The best thing is that you don't have to install anything besides the generic minecraft game! Everything is server based, and like DayZ, persistent across servers!

Be sure to check out my video of the very first time playing it, I go through the spawn point and instructions and then try my had at a bit of murder. Of course like always I get my butt handed to me as both Zombie, they're super fast!, and player both gang up on me! Hehehe.

Video : DayZ - The world on Fire! Fun with Chemlights and Flares!

Here is a screen cap of a shot of myself and friends all running around with blue chemlights and flashlights, because we ran out of flares.

The idea worked pretty well, so far in that we were on a low pop server. If we were to try this on a high pop server then i'm sure we'd be sitting ducks for any bandit or newb with a rifle, as you can see the glow from pretty far off. We had two people with flashlights shining around looking for zombies if we were in an area that would have them and one guy who was the executioner. Occasionally two of use would have to use axes but we got pretty good at the system we came up with. Same idea goes for use of the flares except that the flare will illuminate a very large area so flashlights aren't really needed.

You can video below our fun with flares, chemlights, and looting various buildings in town. Speaking of town, I don't know why but the town I started up in last night was on fire, as well as the surrounding area! Certainly made for easy navigation in an otherwise pitch black night!

So a buddy and I the other day were playing DayZ. We finally were able to "acquire" some gear via some quickly raided military tents, so while armed to the teeth we still needed basic items, food, and water. This little video shows our escapades on how to try and get some water from a well as well as the discovery of a function and fully operational battle stati... err motorcycle. Sadly it was late and my keyboard wasn't configured so we had to abandoned the idea of the two of us joy riding around in game. Check out the video below!
