With all the talk regarding conference realignment I thought I’d throw a few facts into the mix. I know, why mess up a perfectly good argument with facts. Below is a list I pulled from the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis Cutting Tool from the Office of Post Secondary Education. These are 2009 revenue numbers from all sports by university. It is easy to see why Texas is not so willing to share when they generate nearly 50% more than the second highest school in the Big 12, which is Oklahoma.

A&M to the SEC

As the official College Sports PubGuy I have a few thoughts on A&M’s potential move to the SEC.

For those of you who don’t live in Texas, or are like Kyle and just don’t care about college sports, allow me to give you just a little bit of background. Texas A&M University is like the pimple ridden little brother who followed his better looking, captain of the football team, class president big brother through high school. They are always in the shadow of The University of Texas. This analogy is just a bit off since every Aggie will gladly point out that A&M is older than UT by 9 years (1876 vs. 1883). However, since the Republic of Texas wrote its first constitution in 1836, The University of Texas was meant to be THE university of Texas as indicated by the authors setting aside 40 acres in the newly established capitol of Austin in 1839. The  University of Texas campus is still known as “The 40 Acres”.

All of that aside, A&M has always felt equal, if not better, than brother UT. An attitude that is clear in any conversation between former students of these institutions (listen to PubCast #10 for a prime example), but A&M has never been able to convince the general public of this. That is why the impartial observer in me says a move to the SEC by A&M is perfect. It allows the Aggies to finally, at least on paper, spread their wings and stand on their own. But, as you know, I am anything but impartial when it comes to college sports.

So why are the Aggies ready to leave the nest? They are mad. They a pissed off. They are furious at UT over the Longhorn Network. It is the proverbial last straw in a relationship full of hay. It’s the pouring of the blood over the Aggies’ heads at the prom. They have had enough and they are not going to take it anymore.  One might think this all boils down to money, it doesn’t. The Aggies don’t really need the money; they are 10^th in the nation in endowments. It is all about the rivalry. It is about the Aggies being able to look their Longhorn neighbor in the eye and say we are better than you. The Aggies THINK going to the premier (arguable) conference in the NCAA will give them that opportunity. Once again, this is the thinking of a jealous little brother.

If the Aggies jump ship they will be jumping from third string to waterboy. If they think the rednecks in the SEC give a rats ass what happens in Podunk Texas, they should really ask Arkansas how it will go. Right now the SEC is about three teams, Alabama, Florida, and LSU. NOBODY else matters. I’m sure folks from the SEC will argue that point, but it is the perception of the College Sports World that the Aggies are trying to change and that perception is that the SEC is three teams right now. Yes it is all cyclical. Yes Tennessee, Georgia, or Ole Miss may rise again. But so will the Big 10, Pac 10, and maybe… just maybe a Big 12 with newly added teams Arkansas, Houston, and dare I say it… Notre Dame.

Hopefully (and I mean that) the Aggies will sit down to a family supper and realize that blood is thicker than water and that although brothers fight, they love each other and rely on each other to make both stronger. A&M and Texas are irrevocably linked and a move by one without the other will not kill that. However, if it does happen, it will harm A&M way more than it will harm Texas.
