Fear of public speaking is stronger than the fear of death for most people in our society. This fear can have a serious negative impact on one’s career and it can fuel feelings of low self-esteem.

If you have this fear you probably already know what the symptoms are. They include pounding heart, sweating, stammering or otherwise having trouble speaking, nausea, faintness, and inability to make eye contact. Fear of ridicule and/or having your mind draw a blank in the middle of a speech are also common.

Being able to remove the fear of public speaking is important for anyone who wants to make a difference in the world. You have to be able to communicate to large groups if you desire to change things.

Negative thoughts often associated with fear of public speaking include

. The audience won’t like me

. The audience won’t think I’m good enough

. I’ll look like a fool

. My mind might go blank

. Why would anyone listen to me?

. I don’t know what to say

Reframing

Fear of public speaking revolves around the notion that it’s about you instead of it being about the content of the speech. Standing there in front of the audience it’s easy to feel self-conscious but the truth is you’re just the vehicle and not the message itself. It’s not about you it’s about the message. If you’re passionate about the message you’ll find it easier to speak about it. The more comfortable you are with the subject and the greater your conviction with regard to it, the easier it will be to tell others about it. Focusing on the importance of the message itself rather than what people might or might not think about you is the pivot point.

Begin With The End In Mind

Perhaps you’ve noticed that all we’ve discussed thus far has its existence in your mind. Until you actually get up in front of a group your anxiety and fear is really just a lot of fortune telling going on in your head. Allowing yourself to entertain negative thoughts will almost certainly cause problems during a speech. Energy flows where attention goes. If your attention is focused on screwing up in front of a bunch of people then guess what’s likely to happen.

Change Your Thoughts And You’ll Change Your Life

Getting control of what goes on in your head is key. One very powerful way to do this is to leverage the mind’s power of visualization and imagination. People often say, “Visualization doesn’t work for me I’ve tried it before”. The reason why some folks have trouble getting visualization to work is because they do it all in their heads. What I mean by that is when they visualize they get a picture in their mind much like a daydream and there’s not much else to it. When we talk about visualizing toward a goal in NLP we’re referring to something much more than just a picture in your mind.

Effective Visualization

Be seated in a quiet place where you can sit comfortably for between ten or fifteen minutes.

Begin breathing slow and deep. Inhaling so that you feel as though you are filling your stomach not just your chest with air. Once you’ve taken in all the air you can, hold your breath for a count of three and exhale slowly. As you exhale, imagine all tension, negativity, care and concerns leaving your body with the exhaled air. On the inhale, imagine that you’re inhaling pure peace and relaxation into your body. Continue in this manner for five or six repetitions.

Close your eyes and clear your mind of all but an awareness of the rhythm of your deep breathing. Just focus your complete attention on the act of deep breathing. When random thoughts seep in just notice them and let them float away. You will have plenty of time to deal with them later. If anything important pops up just trust that you will be able to recall it when you are finished with this brief relaxation period.

Now that you’re relaxed move your attention to your goal. You want to create a compelling experience in which you’re at the end of your speech. Your audience is smiling at you and you feel happy and empowered. Really put yourself in the physiological state of being there. Allow yourself to soak up the sensations and feelings of having completed your speech with the best possible outcome. What will you hear? Imagine feeling yourself shaking hands with members of the audience. Make it feel as though it has already happened. In fact, convince yourself as best you can that it has already happened and it was a huge success.

Things To Watch Out For

Imagine only the end result not the steps leading up to the result. Trust that when you focus mentally on the outcome you want the details necessary to get you there will unfold as needed.

Murphy’s Law. Beware of this kind of thinking as it is toxic. I like to convince my clients that Murphy’s Law exists only in so far as you allow it to exist in your own mind. Close the door on Murphy’s Law and you’ll increase your success rate dramatically.

Summary

When doubtful or fearful going into any new experience focus your attention on the end result you’re after. Of course you have to actually do the work to get you to that end. So you have to be willing to commit yourself to doing the work necessary to achieve the end result you want. The trick is in avoiding the trap of getting caught up in the obstacles to the point that they become your primary focus. Energy flows where attention goes. Choose carefully what you’re thinking while working towards your goal.

Public speaking is only as difficult as you allow it to be. Unfortunately, many people make it more difficult than it is because their fear or their nervousness is in control. If such is the case with you, then you should consider changing your approach so that you have the upper hand over your nervousness.

Personally, I love nervousness. That adrenaline rush helps me be more dynamic and allows for my passion and enthusiasm to be seen and heard. And, because I am in control of it, my audiences have no idea that I am nervous. They neither see it nor do they hear it in my voice.

By implement the following 5 steps into your presentation, you will discover that you are able to focus on your delivery and not on your fear:

Treat your audience as if you were having a conversation in your living room. Imagine your speech or presentation as being one side of the conversation and your audience’s reaction to you, the other. If you can visualize yourself standing at the lectern, at the head of the conference table, or in the front of the room in this manner, you will feel much more confident.

Speak to your audience with express, not only in the tonal variety of your voice but also your facial expression and your body language. Standing perfectly still with no physical or aural expression is a quick means of putting your audience to sleep.

Know your material inside and out. This means practicing it out loud several days (if not weeks) in advance of your scheduled date. Reading it over in your mind is not practice. Only fools treat their material in that manner.
Breathe with the support of your diaphragm. It is the best means of controlling nervousness you have. It is free; it is healthy; and, it will put an end to your breathlessness.

Believe in yourself. If you approach your audience believing that you cannot do it, how successful do you think you will be? Do not aim for perfection. Strive to do the best job that you can do by incorporating the above 4 methods into your delivery. If you can accomplish that, then you will succeed.

Public speaking does not have to be your greatest fear. If you want to take control of your nervousness and actually allow it to work for you, I guarantee that these social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual components are all that you need to deliver a dynamic speech or presentation.

You have written a prize-winning speech. You have practiced it out loud. You arrive at your speaking engagement with time to spare. You walk to the podium nervous, but confident. You acknowledge your audience with a smile and open your mouth to speak.

Yes, you know your material; yes, you make eye contact with your audience; yes, you talk with color, with life, with emotion; and yes, you believe in yourself. What comes out of your mouth, however, when you speak? Is it a yes?

Don’t fool yourself into believing that how you hear yourself is how everyone else hears you. They identify or recognize you by the sound you hear on your answering machine, voicemail, or some other type of recording equipment. If you are like most other people, what you hear on that equipment is probably not a yes but more likely a no!

Most everyone is concerned with the image they project. In fact, some people are obsessed with their image. Yet little, if any, thought is placed on that 37% of the image you project which happens to be the voice you hear on your voicemail. Does it speak well of you? Is your voice warm and resonant or possibly nasal and whiny? Maybe you sound shrill or wimpy, too loud or too soft.

Luckily you are not stuck with the voice you hear that you may find irritating, embarrassing, shocking or humiliating. You have a better inside which I refer to as your ‘real’ voice. It is probably deeper in pitch and much more vibrant than your ‘habitual’ voice. And, it may be your best asset. In addition, once you discover your ‘real’ voice, you will also discover the best means of controlling nervousness in any form of public speaking.

If you are looking for a career in public speaking or just looking to improve your presentation skills, do not ignore your voice. Your audience judges you the moment you open your mouth to speak – not 5 minutes later, after you have ‘warmed up.’

If the message you are sharing with your audience is noteworthy, consider the vessel that is relaying that message. If you find your voice unpleasant, what are the chances that your audience feels the same way?

A dynamic, resonant voice will captivate your audience, making your message that much greater. Which would you prefer – a captivated audience or one that is turned off by the sound of your speaking voice?

What if there was a way to remove much of the fear and anxiety you feel towards speaking in public? How would that change your life or career for the better? I’ll let your imagination run wild with that while I give you one of the easiest ways to reduce your public speaking fear immediately. Read on to discover what I and only a handful of others know about overcoming your fear of public speaking.

I’m sure you already know that one of the main fears people have when it comes to speaking in public is the fear that something humiliating is going to happen to them.

You may have even had these thoughts yourself. What if I pass out? What if I forget my speech entirely? What if the audience doesn’t laugh at my jokes? Or worse, what if they heckle me like a bad comedian on stage?

While those things would be very embarrassing if they occurred, fortunately most of them never happen and never will. Yet, even if they do, it’s helpful to plot in your mind a strategy that makes even the worst of situations turn out to be advantageous to you.

Sound difficult? Not as much as you’d think. Let me explain.

You see, no matter what happens, there’s a powerful way you can interpret things that can make you invincible when it comes to speaking. This requires a bit of training and practice but you can master it in 30 days or less if you’re diligent.

Ask yourself this question. “How can I turn this situation around so that it it is beneficial to me?”

Let me give you an example. Picture your audience disliking your speech so much they decide to get up and leave the room. One way you could turn this around is to stop what you’re doing and ask those particular audience members for feedback. Is there something about your topic, style, manner that was offensive? Were those people simply in the wrong room?

Regardless of what they tell you, just the very fact that you stopped and dealt with the situation will build up your self esteem and score you points with your audience. You’ll also gain the opportunity to learn how you’re affecting people and you can make any adjustments you need to.

Imagine what it would be like if you could overcome your fear of public speaking forever? How would that change your life for the better? Would you have more confidence at work? Do you think you’d earn more money? How would your social interactions with people improve?

The truth is, you can overcome your fear of public speaking and I’m about to give you a tip on how to do so. If you keep reading this article, you’ll discover the secret only I and a handful of other people know about what it really takes to overcome your public speaking fears.

You see, one of the biggest mistakes people often make when they speak in public is they have the wrong purpose in mind.

Let me explain…

Whether you realize it or not, you probably unconsciously feel like your purpose in speaking is to get everyone in the audience to approve of you. Even if you don’t consciously realize this if you were to analyze your behaviors towards speaking you would see it hold true.

For example, when you prepare your speech, and picture yourself delivering it to your audience, do you often go back and change what you wrote because you think it might sound “dumb” or you might look foolish in front of your crowd?

Truthfully, just about every human being on the planet does this because we all have an internal need to feel accepted. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it at all. The good news is, now that we’re aware of it, we can begin to shift our focus towards our true purpose – which it to give something useful to your audience.

The truth about public speaking is no matter how good a job you do…not everyone is going to be impressed and not everyone is going to agree. In a large group there always exists a diversity of opinions, judgements, and reactions. Some positive, some negative.

Therefore, simply keeping this fact in mind will do wonders in helping you overcome your public speaking fears. Now that you know you don’t have to impress everybody, you can focus your energies on delivering something of value to your audience.

For many people confronted with the dreaded prospect of delivering a presentation all that is going through their mind is getting up on stage delivering the presentation with all good speed and getting off the stage.

As long as the message has been delivered and reinforced (usually by distracting and overloaded PowerPoint slides) that’s the job done. Thinking about how to win over the audience is the last thing on people’s mind but it is absolutely crucial.

Failing to win people over will result in 90% of the audience switching off from your presentation within the first 5 minutes; that should be regarded as a catastrophe, but regrettably it is alarmingly common.

In recent years I have made a point of asking people what they thought about a presentation that we have all sat through and it is truly horrifying how many people very quickly went off into their own dream world, so dull was the presenter.

It is not uncommon for 100 people to sit through an hour’s presentation and only 10 to be still listening after a few minutes – imagine all that lost working time. What are the steps to winning over an audience?

Firstly – know them (if you can) and as early as possible get in a statement that you know they can identify with. Imagine a politician addressing an audience of business people all of whom are running small independent operations and that politician’s opening remarks being ‘Red tape is strangling this country and impeding the ability of our entrepreneurs to thrive. We will reduce this burden at a stroke by taking the following actions…’

As long as the actions made sense to the audience they will have been won over completely and utterly. The rest of the speech will now be so much easier to deliver.

Compare this to a speaker with an audience comprised solely of people working within finance departments being greeted with the remarks ‘this initiative will allow us to reduce those working in finance areas by 50%’.

No great surprise to hear that this initiative was resisted with all the gusto of a sprinter trying to win Gold at the Olympics!

Secondly – when you deliver this audience winning statement look them straight in the eye as you say it and see how the audience rapport builds as they look back at you. Feel the bond forging between the two of you as they do.

Thirdly – when you have finished delivering that winning statement pause briefly to allow the audience to absorb the statement and quite possibly shake their head in agreement.

Fourthly – during the rest of the speech engage with the audience by asking them rhetorical questions knowing that their answers are going to be in the affirmative.

Finally – and this particularly applies to a speech over ten minutes in length; use humour to lighten the mood. This will ensure that the attention of the audience never drifts off.Knowing that you have won an audience over is one of the best feelings in the speaking world.

You probably already know this but public speaking is something that can cause alot of fear and anxiety…you get so nervous at even the thought of speaking in front of a group it makes you want to….well, you can imagine where I’m heading with this. The good news is, public speaking need not be stressful for you at all. There are certain key principles which one can use, and this could enable you to make it a satisfying and enjoyable experience. If you read on, you’ll discover three secrets very few people know about overcoming the fear of public speaking.

Learn Your Topic Intimately Having a good knowledge about your topic can increase your chances of performing well by ten times. It’s also very helpful in easing a person’s public speaking fears. When people attend the popular speaking club, Toastmasters, they are asked to give an “icebreaker” speech about themselves. The purpose being of course, to help new people relax and get used to standing and presenting in front of an audience. This same type of principle related to any topic you present. The better you come to know your material, the less fear you’ll have, and the more effective you’ll become at presenting.

Get Your Audience to Laugh Obviously not everyone’s a born comedian. However, If you’re comfortable with trying, you can use humor to really lighten the mood of the room and better relate to your audience. Not comfortable using your own humor? No problem. You could find a funny video or audio clip to play for your crowd instead. The effect is the same and it will loosen up the room’s energy. Imagine Your Are Speaking to “One” Person I saved the best secret for last. In public speaking, an amazingly effective technique is to imagine you’re speaking to just one person – even a close friend of yours. You need not be overly formal.

Remember, you are not there to impress your audience with your articulate language. Instead, you want to deliver a message that will benefit people in some way or another and people react best when spoken to as if they were your close friend.

You want to make a great speech. Who doesn’t? But most people worry about the possibility of negative emotions wreaking havoc with their perfectly planned speech. They spend days or weeks writing out their speech, ensuring that it says exactly what they want to convey; they practice their speech out loud whilst watching themselves in a mirror, trying out different nuances in body language and tonality. They practice their jokes and decide on exactly how to deliver their punch lines. But a niggling little voice can keep chirping away in the background, saying “what if…”

There are many and varied “what ifs” which can begin to nag away at you, each one making its attempt to wear away a little more of your public speaking confidence. What if you forget where you are in your speech, or if you dry up, or if your voice sounds strange? What if you start to blush or sweat profusely? Or if the audience doesn’t “get” your jokes or they start to nod off? The list of “what ifs” is seemingly endless, and each one has the ability to evoke in you a vivid picture of exactly what you do not what to transpire!

Those images can become indelibly imprinted in your mind’s eye and may even start to link together into a slide show or complete horror movie; not good for ones confidence and equilibrium. Each one of those images invokes an emotion – one which is both strong and gripping. The worst of those images can create a strangle-hold of fear. Even one who has a fairly robust sense of self confidence will inevitably experience some twinges of negative anticipation.

The emotion is so strong and vivid because the pictures you create are strong and vivid. To overcome the feelings which you are experiencing, you have to change the images which you are viewing in your mind’s eye. Once you know to do this, the task is easy with the help of hypnosis. With hypnosis you can create for yourself a rather different slide show, seeing yourself calm and relaxed, making the best speech possible. Negative emotions can be flipped over and replaced by positive feelings in their stead.

To make a great speech you do need to utilize emotions. Sales people will tell you that people do not buy upon logic; they buy on their emotions. In making a speech you are in effect selling your ideas to the audience, and thus it is important to invoke and elicit an emotional reaction. You want to convey your thoughts in an emotional manner, making it easy for your audience to feel that which you want them to experience.

In making a great speech emotions play an enormous, varying and powerful role. It is necessary to eliminate the chirping voice of negativity and harness the power of your own imagination so as to create a positive emotional reaction to the words which you are saying.

Public speaking is the process of speaking with a group of people in a structured, deliberate intention to inform, influence or entertain the listeners. Today, public speaking is more on the transport of ideas and less on the speaker. Mindful of audience are targeted by the information and ideas rather than the performance of the speaker. Speaking in public is a key element in this new competitive century. Public Speaking provides an advantage to keep abreast with the rapid time. We all know that public speaking has always played a key role in building and maintaining a democratic society. The impact of public speech is enormous and affects all aspects of life.

Public Speaking is an art, one needs to master it. Public speaking is not, that anything that comes out of your mouth. The great public speaker is one who attracts the public attention throughout his speech. The speaker should be clear with his ideas and should be tactful. To be an effective speaker you should follow these steps

Preparation and Presentation:

Proper preparation and presentation is the key. Mastering the subject is very important. You should have clear ideas and information so that you can deliver the speech frankly and enthusiastically. If you have subject knowledge completely you can speak with confidence.

Know your audience:

A public speaker, must know the target audience and try to match your ideas to their needs. Do homework before making a speech. Put everything in a logical order. Make sure that your speech should be understandable by your audience and give them full satisfaction. They should not feel uncomfortable so make your subject interesting and informative. Try to be calm and comfortable in front of your audience.

When you are about to deliver a speech you will be like an actor. All eyes will be on you so, you become the center of attraction and attention. Your body language will be watched keenly. Hence your Body language and your content should go hand in hand. There should not be an mismatch.

How do you perceive your audience is important? Always seek friendly, enthusiastic, confident, proud but not arrogant. Put your hand on your nerves and relax. Speak clearly and effectively show the emotion and feeling appropriate to your topic. Establish relationship with audience.

At the end of your speech ask your audiences to give their observations, which will widely help you to improve public speaking skills.

Searching for root causes of public speaking phobia is expensive, time consuming and seldom a cure, but worth exploring since it may be useful in directing the course of therapy.

Anxiety is part of life and, although never pleasant, serves a useful purpose. Not long ago, tonsils and the appendix were thought to be useless appendages. Studies have since revealed they play a role in the immune system. The rationale for male circumcision is cleanliness; yet studies now suggest retaining the foreskin is no less hygienic, and offers protection while maintaining sensitivity. It should be no surprise that all parts of the body, as well as emotions, serve a function.

There doesn’t seem to be anything beneficial about depression. It robs one of appetite, sleep, energy, and in severe cases, the will to live. Yet, depression, a cumulative reaction to stress, brings the system to a halt and is a stern warning change is needed.

Anxiety is useful in a more direct way. The fight or flight mechanism gears us up to defend against less threatening foes, or flee from more imposing ones. Surging adrenaline increases the pain threshold and renders the body stronger and more alert, thus enhancing survival.

Complications arise when the mind reinforces the survival mechanism by making associations. Ring a bell whenever you feed a dog and, eventually, it will salivate at the mere sound, whether a meal follows or not. Administer an electric shock to someone each time they see a butterfly and a similar association takes hold. Likewise, severely reprimanding a child for reading poorly could trigger a life long aversion to performance.

It makes sense to be afraid of lions because they can eat you. Phobia, on the other hand, is an irrational reaction to innocuous stimuli resulting in avoidance behavior. Hence, experiencing panic in the presence of butterflies, which pose no threat to humans, is a phobic reaction.

Perfectionism also complicates the equation by creating unattainable goals which heighten frustration. “Should” is a powerful word which raises expectations, adding pressure to an already volatile mix. Concentrating on the process, rather than how you “should” feel, eases that pressure.

Social and public speaking anxiety are further aggravated by the sufferer’s conviction that their fear is baseless. Unable to identify tangible danger, they are shamed by their reaction, feeling they “should” not be anxious. Certainly, the majority of the time, there is no apparent physical danger, yet, on closer inspection, we find exposure to public scrutiny does involve risk.

Playing competitive sports, I found there was a direct correlation between my anxiety and the aggression I was subject to. Just as animals are more likely to attack sensing fear in a rival, so an athletic opponent is emboldened by a submissive display. All things being equal, this is often the difference between winning and losing. Losing composure or “choking” as it is referred to in athletic jargon, results in a loss of status within the peer circle. Confidence and self-esteem diminish and performance may further erode, creating a downward spiral.

In tribal societies, where survival depends on cooperation, the risks associated with loss of status include smaller food rations and decreased ability to attract a suitable mate. Taken to the extreme, total banishment from the tribe can result in death.

Humans are social animals programmed to cooperate, and anything that threatens that dynamic carries great risk. In a very real sense, healthy relationships are essential to your physical and mental well being. Acceptance and respect are powerful motivators in any social interaction. On a date, in an employment interview and at work, success largely depends on the ability to project a confident and competent demeanor. Anything that jeopardizes that is rightly perceived as dangerous. This realization may be unsettling, however, in the long run, a balanced assessment of the problem leads to clearer understanding, and diminished shame and anxiety.

There is also a rational basis for the stress reaction in encounters with higher status individuals. Animals rarely challenge more powerful rivals in the wild, since the odds of surviving the encounter are low. Fear prevents the animal from making a foolhardy decision and, in effect, enhances survival.

Similarly, this anxiety reaction in humans is a bulwark of societal structure. It prevents reckless behavior and spares us the harm we might incur by challenging more potent individuals. Without it, underlings would constantly challenge superiors and chaos would ensue.

You may be wondering why, given the inherent risks, everyone does not suffer from performance anxiety. The easy answer is…everyone is different, with three main variables contributing to those differences. They are:

1. Genetic Makeup

2. Environment

3. Personality

Genetic Makeup

Genes are blueprints that determine appearance, intelligence and emotional sensitivity. Stress tolerance, which varies greatly from one individual to the next, is largely predetermined, with family history as one of the strongest predictors of anxiety related illness.

The stress reaction is a complex process involving a coordinated mind/body response, and the slightest chemical imbalance drastically affects it. Babies born with reduced levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter, exhibit abnormally cautious behavior and are, in effect, predisposed to shyness.

Environment

We are all shaped by our environment and sum of experiences. A child raised in a loving home is more likely to be well adjusted than one who is not. Confidence is also affected by success, and the child encouraged to learn and master skills is more likely to be confident than one from an overly protective environment. Incidentally, a child taught to view the world as inherently dangerous is more prone to suffer from phobias.

Unfortunately, solid upbringing and good genes are no guarantee of phobia free life. An otherwise healthy person subjected to chronic stress is also susceptible to developing outsized fear.

Personality

Personality is a set of behavior patterns used to function in the world, formed by the interplay between experience and genetic makeup.

Perfectionism is a trait common to the phobic personality. It is a self-esteem issue which equates perfection with acceptance. Mistakes are a part of the learning process and an inability to tolerate them is stifling. When imperfection is perceived as catastrophic, it results in elevated anxiety and avoidance of situations where one is not likely to be brilliant. Given that perfection is rare, the perfectionist sets himself up for constant failure.

Other Causes

Genetics and environment help shape our personality, and determine our ability to handle life’s challenges; but, there are other factors that directly affect the intensity of the anxiety.

Your perception of the threat, to a large extent, determines how much anxiety you will feel. Simply, stated, your level of anxiety is directly correlated to the danger you perceive. One who views a bad speech as catastrophic will experience far more anxiety than one who does not.

Social anxiety is also strongly affected by the intensity of the desire for the outcome, and the ability one feels they have to influence it.

For example, if you’re goal in life is to be a basketball superstar (desired outcome) and you are inexperienced (ability to influence outcome), you would likely be extremely anxious entering an important game. You might also feel quite nervous approaching someone you are smitten with if you consider yourself unattractive and clumsy with the opposite sex.

In either case, increasing skill level or decreasing desire for the outcome reduces anxiety. In the latter example, anxiety is diminished by either improving interpersonal skills or reduced desire for the love interest.

This approach is also useful in the employment market. You can view an interview for your dream career as a do or die; or an opportunity to practice interviewing skills. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, you reduce anxiety and are more likely to make a good impression. Frequent practice also perfects skills, which increases confidence.

While insight into what causes anxiety is useful; it will not solve the problem. You still need to take action. Conventional therapy is often ineffective because it focuses on causes without offering remedies. Knowing your phobia results from an abusive childhood, although helpful, is not a cure. Conversely, facing your fear in manageable increments as part of an intelligent, systematic approach targets the problem directly.

Conventional therapy may be useful as a means of gaining insight and venting feelings; however, it is strongly advised you augment any counseling with an aggressive in-vivo[1]approach. Uncovering the source is not a substitute for aggressively attacking your fear. Given that inevitability, you might as well start the process early.

[1] The in-vivo approach refers to actually entering the feared situation.
