Someone pointed out that there were a few problems with the links to download some of the Textpattern plugins, but that’s all fixed now. Publishmedia developements have been relatively slow over the past few weeks but increasingly frequent updates will appear soon. Oh, and I’ve sorted out a captcha so I could switch the comments back on. I’ve turned trackback support on too and will have to find some sort of spam prevention tool thingy for that also. Additionally, I intend to update the ‘What we’re looking at’ links list.

Updates & the future

I apologise for the lack of updates recently, both to this blog and the PublishMedia.info site itself. I’ve had a few things keeping me busy over the past few weeks of the Easter holidays. Not least getting ready for my upcoming final university exams and the recent launch of easymods.co.uk. I have, over the last few days however, managed to get a few new quality resources onto the site and I hope to add a few more in the next few days. Things may get a bit slow for another few weeks after that, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. Following all of this I hope to do some serious redevelopment of PublishMedia over the summer and try to really get the site going.

Recent resource additions have included many RSS/XML feed parsers, indeed the new featured resource is the highly thought-of SimplePie. Things, I have a feeling, will continue in this vein for a while as I explore my interests in lifestreaming a little more and finally organise a 2nd coming of my personal blog.

Make some modifications to our content

I’ve created a small new feature on PublishMedia.info - you can now suggest alterations or additions to the information shown about any resource. Similar to resource suggestions, users who suggest modifications which are published will be credited accordingly. Unlike resource suggestions, resource modification suggestions can be made by guests as well as registered and logged in users of the site.

I’m currently really enthused about the development of the community side of the site and will continue this for the foreseeable future, adding to this I’ve been quite busy with some other projects I’m working on which is why updates have been relatively slow - don’t worry though, the resources will keep coming and coming…

It’s interesting to observe the different trends in web applications that get listed on PublishMedia. At the moment it seems to be online media manipulation - photo editing and video modifications. Check out the Modify and mashup media online category.

More alterations

Okay, so the category structure has been altered further recently at PublishMedia.info. The resources have been more tightly grouped together depending on what their main practical uses are. The media hosts were becoming too hard to manage within the category system and so have all been lumped in the Upload and share my media category for the time being. In the future this category, and some of the other larger ones, will be aided by additional navigation systems - tagging for example - in order ease the process of finding what you want within a large group of resources with many varying amounts of lots of different features. You can consider PublishMedia.info still very much in beta with more improvements to the organisation and navigation structure of the site on the horizon.

The community features of the site have also been expanded. Users now each have a profile page (see mine) which displays some editable stuff about them and a link to their website, as well as information about resources they have submitted. In the future users will be ranked and hence “promoted” by their activity on the site and the popularity of the resources they suggest. There will be lots more developments here…

For now though, enjoy the improvements, let us know what you think, and I hope you’ve found what your looking for

Categories change

A little reorganisation has taken place within some categories, hopefully improving navigation a little bit. The whole category layout is in need of a rethink in order to make things a bit clearer, in my opinion. In the future I hope the existing main method for navigation will also be supported by other options which will cut across the existing category structure, similar to how a user currently finds plugins on the website.

A few extra categories have also been added recently and I’m quite excited to see what will populate (I want to…) “Promote myself” (within “Make money from my content” - for want of a better place) and “Develop a multimedia web app” over the coming months.

Little enhancements lead to…

As you’ve probably noticed, a few small changes have taken place over the last few days in order to (hopefully) make the PublishMedia user interface a little easier to navigate and nicer to look at. Making the front page boxes draggable is pointless I guess but some users with smaller screens have difficulties with the arrangement of those boxes and it looks pretty cool. Ultimately though, this was done with a view that the entire site interface will become much more interactive in the future.

Aside from the boxes, the design changes focus around the user-contributed sections of the site as this is definately an area in which the website needs to grow. Encouragement of a larger number of user-contributed resources will definitely be a consistent theme in any future PublishMedia.info developments. Currently though, features offered to users through their user control panel are considerably limited due to a few “technical difficulties” and a (short-term) lack of time available (exams) to devote to PublishMedia feature development.

pm_user_info for TXP

This is another Textpattern plugin from PublishMedia.info. It’s in very early stages in development and is poorly designed in some respects, but it does the job it’s supposed to do and that is why I’m making it available to others but not listing it on Textpattern Resources yet.

pm_user_info is a simple plugin which can display certain information about members of your website. It was designed to work in conjunction with other plugins which bring membership of a Textpattern site to the front-end. It can easily be adapted to work with the ign_users database table simply by changing the name of the table in the SQL queries. This plugin has only been tested with Textpattern version 4.0.3. The first bit of code from publishmedia.info to be made available to others was the pm_if_no_articles plugin for Textpattern - initially released on December 17th. This is a simple plugin which counts the number of articles in a given category and provides conditional tags which you can use to show or hide elements of your site based on whether there are zero or more than zero articles in the category. The old “building a multimedia community” site back over on CompulsiveThinker was, of course, a blog and I thought it was about time the improved and rebranded PublishMedia.info got back on the case. This new blog will not only document the development of the PublishMedia.info website, but hopefully you’ll be treated to some of my (Thomas Joseph) musings about publishing multimedia on the web as well. I’ll also be sure to let you know when something special is added to the index or about any code used on the site which will be made available.
