Neutral Rooms That Wow

By Jeanine Hays

Beige needn’t be bland. Three designers share their expert tips for creating neutral interiors that are relaxing, subtle and sophisticated.

From paint colors to furnishings, neutral rooms are anything but boring. These rooms by top interior designers showcase the beauty of neutral spaces. Designers Beth Dotolo and Carolina Gentry of Pulp Design Studios, Vanessa DeLeon and Sandra Espinet give their tips on creating neutral interiors that really wow.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Gray

Gray is a go-to neutral for interior designers. ‘My favorite neutral without a doubt is gray. You can go either cool or warm with it and can contrast any color against it,’ says Beth Dotolo, Pulp Design Studios.

Add Excitement With Texture

A serene paint palette can be brought to life with a mixture of texture and metallic finishes. Beth’s tip: Play with texture and shimmer in order to create excitement in a neutral space.

Dallas Morning News

September 2011

Dwell With Dignity plans Design District pop-up

By Erin Booke

When you hear names like Jan Showers and David Sutherland, the word thrift doesn’t necessarily come to mind. But at Dwell With Dignity’s new pop-up Thrift Studio, you can find high-end designer furniture and accessories at discounted prices — and for a good cause. Sales benefit the nonprofit group, which helps transition families out of homelessness and poverty by outfitting their new homes and trying to lift their spirits.

DWD founders Lisa Robison and Kim Turner say the idea of a benefit store is a natural fit for their work. “We got to a point where, if we wanted to invite more people to play with us, we needed to raise some more funds,” Robison says. “We have such a strong connection with the design community in Dallas, and a lot of the designers want to know how they can help more.”

Designers and showrooms have donated various furnishings, ranging from new to gently used items that come from overstock inventory or clients who have changed their minds.

“They can donate things that are extra-fabulous and may be too precious” to put in an apartment for Dwell With Dignity clients, Robison says. “It might have white linen fabric. Something like that wouldn’t withstand the wear and tear.” Some items also are scaled for quite large rooms, and they would not fit in a transitional apartment.

The store will be a biannual, 30-day pop-up event at different locations. The first store opens Oct. 1 in a 3,000-square-foot showroom in the Dallas Design District.

“Because we are designers, we said that if we did a thrift store, it’s got to be unlike any other thrift store,” Robison says. So the pair recruited five local interior design firms to style vignettes within the store to create a high-end environment — Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25, Beth Dotolo and Carolina V Gentry of Pulp Design Studio, Emily Johnston of EJ Interiors, Samantha Reitmayer Sano of Style/Swoon and William Baker of JonesBaker. Dallas luxury bedding retailer Peacock Alley also will host a pop-up store within Thrift Studio, offering discounts on samples, one-offs and discontinued items.

Prices will range from less than $100 for lamps, accessories and small chairs to custom-upholstered chairs and sofas at heavy discounts. Turner describes a chair, for example, priced about $3,800 retail that the pop-up store may sell for about $1,200. A hand-carved queen-size bed may sell for about $1,500.

“We want people to walk out saying ‘Wow, I really got a great deal on that,’” Robison says.

Dwell With Dignity launches pop-up shop Thrift Studio

By Samantha Reitmayer Sano

Call it cause marketing or simply designers doing good. Either way, nonprofits are turning to retail to better the world one transaction at a time. Case in point: Two-year-old Dallas nonprofit Dwell With Dignity, which creates inspiring home interiors for families struggling with poverty, opens the doors to Thrift Studio, a 30-day pop-up shop in the heart of the Design District, on Oct. 1. With neighbors and supporters such as Pegasus Ablon, Scott + Cooner and Janus et Cie, this isn’t your average thrift store. DWD has stocked a 3,000-square-foot warehouse with gently used furniture, including some rare to-the-trade-only gems donated by showrooms and designers such as David Sutherland, Jan Showers and David Cadwallader. “Often we are given gorgeous pieces that would make more sense to sell to raise funds,” says DWD director Kim Turner. “Last week, we received a $6,000 hair-on-hide modern wingback chair. It’s stop-you-in-your-tracks stunning.”

To kick off the pop-up, five Dallas-based designers have been asked to create vignettes with warehouse offerings and help from 50 Neiman Marcus volunteers. Look for designs by Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten 25, Beth Dotolo and Carolina V. Gentry of Pulp Design Studios, William Baker of JonesBaker, Emily Johnston of EJ Interiors and the Material Girls blog and — full disclosure — this reporter.

“While we do need furniture, what we really need is the funds to build infrastructure for our organization,” says DWD founder Lisa Robison. An August segment on The Nate Berkus Show inspired dozens of inquiries asking how to start DWD in communities around the country. Robison hopes to take the next year to draft a road map.
