The paper task light in DuraPulp by Södra<br /><br /> At Milan Design Week 2010, April 14 - 19 at Superstudio Piú, Swedish lighting company Wästberg will launch a lighting fixture made in DuraPulp and developed in close collaboration with Swedish forestry industry company Södra and Swedish architects and designers Claesson Koivisto Rune.<br /><br /> Last year Claesson Koivisto Rune and Södra developed the Parupu children’s chair out of DuraPulp, thus proving it possible to make a real chair of paper. Now Claesson Koivisto Rune and Södra team up with Wästberg to challenge themselves even further: merging electricity, paper and light, using paper, not only as a component or for casing, but really fully integrated.<br /><br /> "Combining old wisdom with ground-breaking technology is elementary to Wästbergs philosophy” says Magnus Wästberg, founder and CEO of Wästberg. “Paper has been used throughout history for making lamp shades. class="description"><p><b>Södra wins PPI award for Research Achievement of the Year</b></p><br/> <p>Södra Cell is delighted to announce that Joakim Nygren was awarded the title of Research Achievement of the Year at the prestigious PPI Awards ceremony in Munich on 28 October.</p> <br/> <p>The award recognises a talented individual who has excelled in the field of research to benefit the pulp and paper industry. Candidates included research stations and organisations from around the world.</p> <br/> <p>Nygren won the award for his work with Parupu, a fully renewable and biodegradable childrens chair. The chair was launched to great acclaim at the Milan Furniture Fair earlier this year, but it is only the start of Nygren's work into innovative ideas for pulp.</p> <br/> <p>The chair is made from DuraPulp, a new patented pulp from Södra with exciting potential to take cellulose into a whole new range of applications. Durapulp is a blend of woodpulp mixed with a corn-based polymer. The result has all the renewable and recyclable benefits of woodpulp but with a strength more akin to plastic.</p> <br/> <p>Nygren is now heading up Södra's PulpLabs, an interactive hub of new ideas to see where pulp can move to next, including NanoPulp and FoamPulp (see <a href="http://www.sodrapulplabs.com" target="_blank">www.sodrapulplabs.com</a> to find out more).</p> <br/> <p>"Before this project started, we admitted to ourselves that if we could make a chair from DuraPulp, we could do almost anything" Nygren said. "The chair is done. Now it's time for almost anything."</p> <p>Commenting on the award, PPI's editor Mark Rushton said: "We received a high level of entries for the research award and it was a difficult choice to make given the sheer amount of research and innovation going on in the industry at the moment. This winning submission represents a top draw research achievement by a candidate who is looking forward to future opportunities for pulp and paper manufacturers."</p></p></p><img The chair has its world premiere at the furniture fair in Milan.</b> <br /><br /> Parupu is a chair for children. A unique material makes the chair durable and waterproof, as well as fully compostable. To suit its young target group, it is also colourful, stackable and made for fun and games. Parupu lasts roughly the length of a childhood and can then be recycled. <br /><br /> The chair is made from the material DuraPulp, a result of several years’ research and development. The objective was to develop a material with a paper like feel, but with durability normally associated with materials like steel, wood or hard plastic. <br /><br /> Design and architect firm Claesson Koivisto Rune has, in conjunction with Södra and research company STFI Packforsk, experimented and tested the suitability of the material for use in a tough and practical chair for children. <br /><br /> "Parupu has more or less designed itself – under our supervision. We have added our skills and experience and combined them with the technical possibilities of the material," says Mårten Claesson. <br /><br /> DuraPulp is a composite material that consists of pulp and PLA, a biodegradable plastic based on maize starch. The material can be moulded and formed. It can in many cases replace oil-based plastic, but also opens up for completely new products. <br /><br /> "Parupu is the first product made from this type of material, which is based entirely on renewable cellulose and a renewable polyester form starch," says Karin Emilsson, director of technology and R&D manager at Södra. "DuraPulp is also suitable for production of quality packaging and labels, and runs very well in a normal paper machine. Our hope is that the chair will create interest and ideas amongst our existing customers as well as leading to discussions with new customer groups and new markets," she says. <br /><br /> On <a href="http://www.sodrapulplabs.com" target="_blank">www.sodrapulplabs.com</a> you can follow the entire development process behind Parupu, along with some of the other projects within Södra’s R&D department. The company had discussed the possibility of creating a chair made from molded pulp. The author was taken on as a manager for the project. The objective was to produce design documentation for a paper pulp chair which was to be launched at the in 2008 Milan Furniture Fair. The purpose of the thesis was to develop a product with scientific methods as well as to investigate how to make collaboration between designers and engineers easier through communication.<br /><br /> The project went through four basic stages: Information, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. Information on paper pulp, molded pulp, chair design, sitting postures and the existing market of molded pulp furniture. A requirements specification was established from that information. The development of the chair was based on different models that would determine different design aspects.<br /><br />The Paper Pulp Chair has two‐part structure that utilizes closed geometries, double shells and an inner stool for stability. The two parts are individually nesting, and are joined with corresponding flanges. The paper pulp is mixed with a non‐petroleum based thermoplastic, PLA, which enhances the material properties.<br /><br /> The chair will not be launched at the Milan Furniture Fair 2008. Although, design documents for the chair has been produced, and the project continues together with <a href="http://www.ckr.se" target="_blank">Claesson Koivisto Rune</a>, <a href="http://www.stfi-packforsk.se/" target="_blank">STFI‐Packforsk</a> and <a href="http://www.sodra.com" target="_blank">Södra Cell</a>.
