Story

A wannabe filmmaker Kishore, played by Srinivas Avasarala, aspires to make a love story of a different kind. He runs into professor Apparao (Sayaji Shinde) during a morning jog and comes to learn about the love story of Shyam and Anshu, played by Varun and Sanchita, respectively.

Shyam and Anshu fall in love with each other after constant encouragement from their professor Apparao, who has evil intentions deep within. Soon, they get engaged and anticipate living happily ever after. But thanks to fate, Sunaina, an irresistibly hot woman, played by Catherine Tresa, walks into Shyam's life. And before you know it, he starts developing feelings for her. What follows forms the rest of the story.

Performances

In the acting department too, you feel that the best of the director was missing. Varun Sandesh and Sanchita as the lead pair struggle in the respective roles. Neither can Sanchita act, nor can she entice with glamour. On the other hand, Varun Sandesh, who by now has become repetitive and boring in corny lover boy roles, should now be open to challenging roles.

We all know why Catherine was cast, don't we? She woos the audience with her glamour, but doesn't even move a muscle when it comes to acting. Sayaji Shinde and Srinivas play their respective parts quite well, while Vennela Kishore gives us reasons to laugh.

Technical Analysis

Cinematography is okay while the musical scores are unimpressive except the Chandamama Pai song, editing seemed to have taken a toll on the film. With tighter editing, the film might have kept the interest in the audiences alive. Screenplay is ineffective and direction is mediocre.

Analysis

Filmmaker G. Neelakanta, a National award winner disappoints big time in his latest Telugu romantic-drama titled "Chamak Challo". It is that kind of film, which will make you breathe a sigh of relief as the credits roll down.

The film had the potential to be an engaging love story, but even before it could leave an impact, the slackening narrative drains every last ounce of patience from the inside of the audiences.

Come to think of it, "Chammak Challo" has nothing new to offer except for some moments of laughter, which by the way, almost every other film nowadays brings to the table. It is a mirror image of modern day love story - boy loves girl, boy meets extremely hot girl, boy develops feelings for the second girl, boy and the first girl fight over the second girl. Cut to next scene, we have a cliched climax.

Dig deep into the filmography of Telugu film industry; you're very likely to find plenty of films with similar storylines. Having said that, the director takes efforts to narrate the love story of Shyam and Anshu through the eyes of a third person, which in this case is Apparao.

There are too many loose ends in the film. One for instance is Apparao's compulsive desire to make Shyam and Anshu fall in love, is unsatisfying. Romance between Varun and Sanchita is bleak because as long as they are together, they are fine, but appear superficial when they are away from each other. If you are truly in love, then how could you possibly be ruled by propriety when your relationship is on the brink of ending?

Final Verdict

"Chamak Challo" has nothing new to offer except for some moments of laughter…

Story

Anu, an aspiring horror-novelist, and Michael, a pizza delivery boy, are happily in love with each other. All is well in their haven until all hell breaks loose. Michael, on one of his home-delivery trips, encounters life changing events, which pave way to some unexpected twists and turns in his own life. What happened to Michael during one of his pizza-delivery trips forms the rest of the story.

Performances

Vijay Sethupathi does a smart job as Michael following the directions of Karthik Subbaraj. His performance is natural and realistic.

Remya Nambeesan plays the girl next door role and she is okay. Her makeup could have been better. The track between the lead pair looked artificial. Others were adequate.

Technical Analysis

Pizza is technically brilliant. The sound effects are pulsating and will haunt you for a while. Cinematography is appealing while the screenplay is effective and the narration is gripping. Karthik Subbaraj’s direction is good. Production values of SK Pictures are good.

Analysis

"Pizza" is a smart and engrossing thriller released in the recent times. The screenplay is gripping and the film has exciting moments while it has explosive climax which makes you awestruck. The film is supported by a slow, but crisp screenplay that may not engage initially, however excites one and all, eventually. Karthik sets the context of the film quite early on, but makes everybody wait long before he introduces some exciting moments in the second half.

The film oscillates between two genres, namely horror and thriller in a way that at all the times audiences either hooked or confused. The director succeeds in keeping the suspense alive throughout until he decides to break it. The actors need no special mention because had it not been for an intelligent screenplay, roles enacted by them wouldn't have made any difference. The second half is the life of the film and the climax is brilliant.

Final Verdict:

"Pizza" is an engrossing thriller, provided you don’t mind watching Tamil nativity films…

Story

Sailaja (Nithya Menon), returns to India on a holiday while her father Sivaji Rao (Sai Kumar), who have a good image among the public and media plans to enter politics. Sailaja comes across Surya (Nara Rohit) when she goes Vizag and gets attached to his family members along with him. However, Sailaja comes to know a twist regarding series of murders which is shocking. Who is Surya and What is the mystery behind series of murders forms the rest of the story.

Performances

Nara Rohit proves to be a good performer but his character fades off and doesn’t have any strength. He does satisfactorily in what he was offered.

Nithya Menon looked good and she delivers her best in terms of performance. The actress is charming and expressive.

Sai Kumar is powerful with an amazing on-screen presence, Sathya Krishna is okay, Brahmanandam and Ali are wasted, Naga Babu is decent, Srinivasa Reddy brings in few laughs. Other didn’t have much scope.

Technical Analysis

Karthik’s musical scores are mediocre while the background score is just okay. Cinematography by Andrew is first class and the film looked colorful. Chintapalli Ramana dialogues lack the needed punch. Srinivas Raga direction is bad and screenplay falters. Marthand K.Venkatesh editing is patchy. Production Values are okay.

Analysis

Srinivas Raga comes up with an interesting storyline but he fails in its narration. The execution falters with illogical screenplay. Despite many experienced artists in the film, the film fails to grab audiences’ interest. Brahmanandam, MS Narayana, Ali are wasted in uninteresting roles. In fact Nara Rohit’s role fades off with no strength to his role.The scenes are unconvincing and illogical. He could have focused more on screenplay and family drama.

The first half is a bit okay with characters establishment and some family drama while the interval bang is interesting offering some scope, but the second half tests patience with the director’s poor handling of script. Despite an interesting twist in the interval, the screenplay diverts into the conventional and predictable zone of story in the second half while the climax is yet another fail.

Final verdict

Okkadine disappoints with illogical screenplay and dragging narration.

Sonakshi Sinha turns Meenakshi in Tollywood

Hyderabad: Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha, who is debuting in Telugu with Mahesh Babu's film Shivam, is now turning Meenakshi in Tollywood. Wait!!! She is not changing her name in Telugu film industry. But the name of her character in her first Telugu movie is Meenakshi. And director Krish says that he has created this role keeping the Dabangg girl in mind and it will be a tailor-made role for her.

Talking to Times of India, Krish revealed that Sonakshi Sinha would play a girl named Meenakshi in his much-hyped next directorial venture Shivam. He says that he was very much impressed with the Bollywood babe's performance in Dabangg. Especially, her big and beautiful eyes impressed him the most.

"I wrote the script a while back, and to be honest, I had Sonakshi in my mind while I was sketching the female lead. The character, Meenakshi, will have big and beautiful eyes. And when I saw her in Dabangg, I was impressed. Her eyes are mighty expressive, and hold a lot of power," TOI quotes Krish as saying.

However, Shivam would be a big budget movie and producer Ashwini Dutt is investing money on it. Sources claim that the film is likely to be a Tamil-Telugu bilingual. If the news turns true then it will be Mahesh Babu's first straight Tamil film. Talking about its shooting, Krish says that the movie will go on floors with later half of this year.

"Indians don't have a mind to think," mock-whispers Kay Kay Menon, playing the sort of slimeball you thought went out of style with Prem Chopra.

Menon, who once was a formidable actor, hams it to the hilt as a kind of Mogambo of the dancing world who thinks dancing is for big bucks, and also for big... well you know the "f" word that rhymes with bucks.

Prabhu Deva, God bless his "sole", is the other polarity. He dances because... well, he has to. He imparts his skills to a ragamuffin bunch of street kids who seem to have auditioned for Breakin' that street-smart film about using breakdance as a form of selfexpression that came way back in 1984.

Indeed there is something very 1980s about Tushar Hirnandani's screenplay which pitches the idea of Good Dancing Versus Bad Dancing with a heartwarming sincerity.

Movie plots based on dancing and dancers are rare these days. Choreographer-turned-director Remo d'Souza has hit upon a winning idea.

Being a choreographer he is able to weave the characters into a web of dance-related episodes that culminate in that grand do-or-die competition that we have been witnessing in one form or another since the time movies came into being.

It could be Rocky Balboa in the ring. Or the raring-to-go students from Prabhu Deva's makeshift dancing school in this film...Heck, anybody can dance as long as the music is right.

Remo d'Souza's film glides in expected but never dull ways. It winds its way through a series of self-consciously constructed road-blocks for the sincere dance teacher and his students who learn, the hard way, that dance is for one's own pleasure and not to show off.

Ironically this philosophy of dance as a form of self-expression hardly fits into the the framework of cinema where the very nature of the medium invites the maximum appreciation.

What sees "ABCD" through is its sincerity of purpose. Director d'Souza intends to do a "dance film" with a sturdy plot to hold up the choreography.

In that endeavour the film doesn't slip up at all. The fact that it has Prabhu Deva at the helm certainly helps to keep the show on the road.

As an actor, Prabhu Deva is restrained and effective in bringing out the idealism and discipline of a dance teacher. His thick Tamil accent is justified by the character's origins being nailed to Chennai. You know when this guy explains the essence of dance to his students he isn't faking it. But it's when the choreographer-dancer's takes the floor that we're really floored.

When Prabhu dances time freezes. The long pre-interval episode where he puts up what could only be termed the Grand Prabhu Deva Tour de Force is the film's high-point. You won't be poorer to leave at that point.

The youngsters who play Prabhu Deva's students are passable in their acting skills.But I suggest they should just focus on dancing as a career. The actor who plays the dopey-dancer Chandu (Punit J Pathak) corners much of melodrama in the second half.

Honestly, the film just needed to get on with the dancing and leave the mapping of a back-story for the dancers to another time, another place.

For this one, all we needed was what B.Subhash recommended in the 1980s. Dance Dance....I almost expected Mithun Chakraborty to show in support of Prabhu Deva's shimmying shishya-log.

If you know how to dance or if you've ever desired to dance ABCD is the film for you. With Prabhu Deva's astonishing virtuosity on the dance-floor to guide the characters' and the film's destiny and to provide a centifrugal scinitillation to the proceedings, there is little reason to quibble over the content.

Sachin-Jigar's music and songs though adequate could have been more dynamic. Watch out for the number accompanying the end-titles where dancing legend Saroj Khan joins Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya and Remo d'Souza.

That's this innocent and earnest film's paisa-wasool moment.

Mirchi Movie Review (Telugu)

Story

Jai (Prabhas), an architect happens to save Manasa (Richa Gangopadhyay), who comes to Italy for studying MS. Manasa falls for Jai but the former informs that they cannot be happy due to her family background. Jai decides to change Manasa’s family mindset and he does it after flying to India. The family members get impressed with Jai and they give nod for the wedding. Just then Jai reveals his flashback. What is his flashback and why did he enter their family forms the crux.

Performances

Prabhas is handsome, charming and energetic in the film. He carried off the film on his shoulders right from the word go and his act takes him to another level. The Young Rebel Star excels in dances and action sequences that are brilliantly captured while he is equally good in emotional scenes.

Anushka is too good in village-belle attire besides being a confident performer. Her smoldering looks along with her eye-catching dances will get her good response. Anushka has less screentime but her scenes with Prabhas had worked well.

Richa Gangopadhyay is glamorous and is okay performance wise. Brahmanandam, Raghu Babu are hilarious, Nagineedu is convincing, Subbaraju and Sathyaraj were good, Nadhia is magnificent in her brief role.

Technical Analysis

Devi Sri Prasad’s soundtrack is one of the assets of the film, while as per the picturization ‘Kaatuka Kallu..’ is one of the best shot songs with great chemistry between Prabhas and Anushka. Dialogues are very impressive with good punchliners. Screenplay is predictable, direction could be better, editing isn’t smooth, Action choreography is brilliant. Production values are lavish.

Analysis

Prabhas pulled off the role with great ease and the result of Mirchi would be quite better if an experienced director as wielded the megaphone. Action sequences are one of the highlights of the movie along with music. The first half is entertaining at times as there isn’t much of the story, with only Prabhas rocking the show along with Brahmanandam and Richa filling the space with songs. The film had interesting elements in parts but the predictable screenplay with flat narration in emotional scenes doesn’t work. Mirchi reminds us of many other Telugu films like Brindavanam, Student No.1, Dammu, Sankham et al. However, interval raises the tempo with a good action packed sequences and the second half is comparatively better while the flashback episode is the life of the story. Scenes between Prabhas and Anushka are well-shot and their amazing chemistry can be seen in Kaatuka Kallu song.

Overall, Mirchi has good dialogues, excellent action sequences, decent comedy and neatly pictured songs and above all, Prabhas rocked the show entirely. At the Box-Office, Mirchi will collect big for its ample commercial mass elements.

Final Verdict

Prabhas rocks the show in this decent yet formulaic commercial entertainer!!!

Story

Sam Fernandez (Aravind Swamy) and Berchmans (Arjun) partake training sessions in a Christian missionary for priesthood. However, with a difference in an argument, the two gets separated with Berchmans getting kicked out of the church and eventually choose different paths. Years after, Sam turns out to be a Church Father and Berchman ends up as criminal millionaire. Sam turns the guardian for the young orphan Thomas (Gautham Karthik) who goes head over heels for Beatrice (Thulasi Nair), daughter of Berchmans. The rest of the story how Thomas wins his love forms the crux.

Performances

Gautham Karthik looks promising and he shows loads of energy with his convincing and impressive performance. He has danced well and his chemistry with Thulasi Nair was good. Despite his not so great characterization in the film, he makes us notice his performance with his efforts.

Thulasi Nair looked good but she has very little scope for performance. She is impressive and the song sequences featuring her have come out well.

Aravind Swamy and Arjun had good amount of roles in the movie and their performances are brilliant. The two actors have done their roles with such ease. Lakshmi Manchu is brief.

Technical Analysis

Just like every Mani Ratnam film, Kadali is also technically sound film. Rajiv Menon's cinematography is absolutely stunning and as asset for the film. The beaches and the sea are brilliantly captured while the songs picturisation are a great watch. AR Rahman’s musical scores are pleasing while the background score is impressive. Sreekar Prasad editing is crisp while art direction is good. Dialogues are mediocre with heavy Christianity words been penned.

Analysis

Being the ace director Mani Ratnam’s film, Kadali is surrounded with huge expectations. Instead Kadali my not reach your hopes if you expect to watch the film on the range of Roja, Bombay, Geethanjali et al. Kadali is all bout good vs bad and the central characters are essayed by Aravind Swamy and Arjun. In fact the two prominent stars got more screentime and importance than the debutant actors, where the love story is interwoven between these two prominent characters Sam and Bergman in the backdrop of sea.

The initial hour of the movie is excellent and the Thomas characterization as the innocent child was heart-wrenching, but as the story progresses Mani has shown the struggle between the good and bad. The story moves at a very slow pace and it’s only in the second half the love story takes off. Aravind Swamy has tried to pull off the film in the first half but the characterization lacks the needed depth and it isn’t convincing enough. While the narration holds your interest at times, the slow pace and the sloped screenplay frequently tests your patience.

Final Verdict

Technically Brilliant, but content wise an average fare…

Story

White (Ram) aims to take over the Mirchi Yard from his childhood and makes his living there by winning the respect and hearts of traders. Adhikeshavulu (Prakash Raj) is the chairman of the mirchi yard while White falls in love with his daughter Sandhya (Kriti Kharbhanda) and in few circumstances Sandhya gets engaged to White with which Adikeshavulu has to agree to his wedding. Meanwhile, a twist gets unfolded which deals with the past of White and Adhikeshavulu. What is their past and Will White’s aenda gets fulfilled forms the crux.

Performances

Ram yet again does an energetic role in the movie. His dances are a great watch and he looked dashing throughout the movie.

Kriti Kharbandha is quite glamorous in the film and she has done her role well as Sandhya. Her chemistry with Ram worked well.

Prakash Raj gave his best shot and and enacts his role with graceful ease, although his nude scenes are a bit irritating, Prabhu gets a significant role, Raghu Babu, Kishore Das brings in some laughs while the rest of the cast Ahuti Prasad, Abhimanyu Singh, Ali, Jayaprakash Reddy and others were adequate.

Technical Analysis

Cinematography is good, all the songs are well-shot in the beautiful locations. Mani Sharma’s background score is appealing. Dialogues are fine. Bhaskar’s direction is bad, while there are lots of loopholes in the screenplay. Editing could have been better. Production values are standard.

Analysis

Ongole Gitta is a routine mass entertainer and the subject is not new to Tollywood. The storyline is old-fashioned with too many cliches while the execution falters with slow pace. Director Bhaskar who has good number of hits earlier disappoints big time with Ongole Githa. The film lacks native feel and lots of Tamil flavor has been incorporated despite being a straight Telugu flick. Be it the characterizations, taking, music we in fact get a doubt if we are watching a Telugu flick. Prakash Raj gaining more screen time than protagonist, going nude not once but many times wouldn’t be liked by audiences. It looked like the lead characters role is sidelined with no significance while Prabhu, Prakash Raj gets more screen.

Ram’s character initially was designed well and it justifies the title as the protagonist loves taking risks, challenges with loads of bravery. The love story between the lead pair is cute but as the film progresses, the slow paced narration tests your patience. The climax is abrupt and extremely predictable.

Final Verdict

Old-fashioned storyline and unexciting screenplay results Ongole Githa as a below average fare…

Here something interesting we bet you didn’t know, Pooja Kumar revealed that it was a chat on Skype that landed her the role in Vishwaroopam, “Gouthami ji, who has also done the styling for the film, saw my work online and recommended me for the project. The production contacted my manager and we set up a Skype call with Kamal sir. We spoke for about five minutes and he said that his team would get back to me. The next day I get a call and I’m on the plane to Chennai to shoot the film! This was what is so amazing about technology today – you can be anywhere in the world and get great work. I am very thankful to them for allowing me to be part of this wonderful project.”

In the film, she plays Nirupama, who is married to Kamal Haasan’s character Viswanath. “I play a nuclear oncologist. We live in New York and I basically married him to get my PhD and green card so that I can pursue my career. My character is working on curing cancer (something spurred on by the death of her father). However, my life is not what I thought it would be and my husband has more to him than meets the eye! Viswanath is a character who is a Kathak teacher and we have a marriage of convenience initially, but our story develops as the narrative goes on.”

Kumar said she really feels that Haasan writes wonderful female characters, “His female roles are filled with sub-texts, fine nuances and so much character.”

The actress admits she was nervous her first day on set, “On the first day I was scared, as I knew no Tamil. I was giving a lot of takes to make it happen, but he said I was on board after I thought I’d be ousted from the project for messing up. He looked beyond that – he wants people to come up, especially newcomers, who don’t get so many opportunities. I realised what a wonderful human being he was, and my nervousness transitioned into confidence.”

So, once the nerves settled how was it to work on Vishwaroopam and Kamal Haasan? “This has been a life changing experience for me. Working with a man of his stature and calibre has been a gift I will cherish forever. I am truly blessed for getting an opportunity to work with a man I admire and respect tremendously. His passion, tenacity, versatility, and humbleness drives you as an artiste and pushes you to achieve excellence. He is the epitome of a great artiste because he pushes the envelope to newer levels. Standing next to him on set was an incredible experience, because his knowledge of filmmaking is extraordinary. I still have to pinch myself and say that I worked with an icon. It’s been a dream come true!”

Now Haasan starred in the film but he also wrote it, produced it and directed the film, which Kumar says was an eye opening experience. “When we were rehearsing the scenes he was my director and then when we were ready to shoot, I shut off the director and switched to the actor who is my co-star. What was so fascinating to see was that he seamlessly transitioned between roles. There was no hesitation or conflict in his mind of what had to be done. This is one of the biggest films to come out of India, so we should all commend him for the effort. His patience and humility was astounding.”

Another amazing thing was that not only did she get to work with Kamal sir, but she also worked with the esteemed Shekhar Kapur, “I was so excited when I heard that I was going to be doing scenes with Shekhar ji. His vision, storytelling, and direction are truly unique and we should celebrate people like him. It was truly an amazing experience for me, being able to listen to two greats; Kamal sir and him share their film stories and projects. Hopefully we will work together soon.”

The film also stars Rahul Bose, “Rahul is a very versatile actor and although we didn’t get to work in any scenes together, I’m happy that he has been a part of this film. I met him briefly during the shoot and I do hope I get a chance to act with him.”

Calling the film an action ride that you are bound to thoroughly enjoy she says, “The audience will be in for a wonderful treat!”

The actress closed with a thank you to her fans, “Thank you for all the love and support! It’s because of your love that I keep on striving for excellence and the want to give you all something new to see every time. Keep watching movies, as we love making them for you!”

Bejoy Nambiar's second feature film after "Shaitan" interconnects the lives of three characters named David, played with outstanding conviction by actors belonging to three different generations. The three protagonists, who by chance share the same name, didn't have to be linked in the plot at all.

Each David occupies a distinctive emotional spatial and chronological dimension. Each story is told with a muted flourish that eschews the flamboyant edginess of a recent, highly favoured and over-flavoured genre of Hindi cinema... you know the Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj genre where the characters are darkly drawn from life's most sombre colours.

Nambiar's universe is populated by victims who refuse to bow down to what we call destiny and what in many circumstances is plain cowardice. In the hard-hitting story about a young rock musician's conflict with religious fundamentalism, Vinay Virmani (a prized find) confronts Hindu radical Rohini Hattangadi in a lift to ask why his Christian father was defaced. That small mobile cubicle becomes the cosmos for a question that swirls and dances around the narrative posing questions that go far beyond the moment.

Nambiar's command over the space that his characters occupy is supreme. Whether it's Vinay Virmani giving guitar lessons to single-mother Lara Dutta on a leafy verandah or southern maverick actor Vikram sozzled in the Goan seascape perched on palm tree making eyes at the mute-and-deaf Isha Sharvani - the characters seem to inhabit places where their mind, heart and body are intrinsically at home.

Then there is Neil Nitin Mukesh, making a glorious impact as a Muslim don's chief lieutenant in the London of the 1970s. Shot in a shimmering brooding bewildering play of light and shadow by cinematographer Sanu Verghese, this episode in Nambiar's trilogy is both a brutal depiction of internecine gang war and an intense love story, a Shakespearean tragedy set in the 1970s and yet conveying contemporariness. All that grips us from the first to the last.

Just how Nambiar manages to bring the stories of an identity-challenged gangster in the 1970s, a fun-going-into-fundamentalism musician in the 1980s and a sozzled moony-eyed fisherman in the 1990s into one line of vision, is a question that only Nambiar and his compelling co-writer Natasha Sahgal can answer.

By the time the three stunning stories converge on March 3, 2012, we are so involved with the three protagonists' moral and political awakening that the lines dividing the different eras simply evaporate, leaving us to look into that chasm in the individual's soul where life's worthiness is weighed against human relationships that may or may not last for as long as the individual desires.

Nambiar's three-tiered screenplay is a marvel of architecture. Some credit for holding up the three storey edifice must go to the technicians. Cinematographers Shanu Verghese, P.S Vinod (who has shot Vinay Virmani's musical odyssey) and R. Rathnavelu(creating a Goan idyll for Vikram's story that goes far beyond touristic titillation) collaborate with the film's editor, the indomitable Sreekar Prasad to bring to bear an infinite lightness of being on the potentially top-heavy plot.

Nambiar's film could easily have collapsed under the weight of its cleverness. Miraculously, the director imparts a ceaseless sense of spontaneity into what appears to be the story of three lives connected only by their first name. Not the most promising of premises to hold up a plot. Yet, "David" is unflinchingly engaging.

Nambiar's command over his characters' destiny is masterly. And there are so many of them! Big or small, the characters leave an enduring mark in the script.

Each of the three actors playing the title role provides an evocative centre to the screenplay. It is hard to choose a favourite since all three actors occupy entirely distinctive spaces. Neil as a gangster whose loyalty is under murderous pressure, works hard to achieve oneness with his character. He looks the part and gives to it a feeling of lived-in familiarity. This is a new beginning for Neil.

Vikram as the fisherman who shares a rather eccentric relationship with his dead dad(Saurabh Shukla), living mother(Rubi Chakravarti) and the neighbourhood massage-parlour owner (Tabu) is in one word, spectacular. His body language and spaced-out expressions of drunkenness and love (sometimes both at the same time) are to die for.

But it is Vinay Virmani as the musician who finds his life changed by politics and religion, who takes us by surprise. A very appealing screen presence and a non-rehearsed charm ensure that Virmani stands tall in the formidable cast.

Tabu and Lara Dutta are effective but underused. On the whole, every actor in the smallest of roles shines in the plot's huge canvas.

"David" is a world shot in a deep-focus darkness lit up at the edges by a sense of joie de vivre that the characters preserve even when their soul is under siege. Nambiar bleeds brilliancy into the film. This is a rugged pulsating parable of passion and redemption shot in three time zones unified by the theme of love's loss and the soul redeemed.

"David" is many things at the same time. Finally though, it is a magnificent morality tale that tells us it is trendy to be bad, but being good is timeless.

Deepa Mehta's "Midnight's Children" is not a well-crafted film of Salman Rushdie's Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. Yet it captures the essence of the novel to the core.

Told through the lives of the children born at the stroke of midnight of Aug 15, 1947, especially, Salim, Shiva and Parvati, it is a multi-layered tale of destinies. It is a story of the rich, the poor and the misguided. It is fiction and fantasy delightfully wrapped within the folds of the political scenario of the three countries, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

What precedes the birth of Salim is a complex tale that is narrated in the first 45 minutes of the film. Inspired by her rebel husband's communist slogan, "Let the rich be poor and the poor, rich", the misguided paediatric nurse, Mary, deliberately switches the identity tags of the two babies as a gesture of solidarity and thereby swaps their destinies.

Moving ahead, in childhood, Salim discovers that thanks to a sneeze and the sniffles, he can hear and see all of the other 581 surviving children around the country born at the same historic day and time as he. Dubbing them as Midnight's Children, he has the power to call "conferences" in his bedroom late at night, bringing their presence together from all parts to plan the fate of the nation, including the hot-headed Shiva and pretty and mystical Parvati, the spell-weaving witch.

The three are intertwined again as adults in the film's last act when Shiva, now a ruthless military commander, and Salim, following six years of amnesia, become involved with the beautiful adult witch, Parvati against the background of Indira Gandhi's brutal emergency measures.

Rushdie's rich characters are brought to life by a strong ensemble of esteemed actors whose performances were well extracted by director Deepa Mehta. Debutant Satya Bhabha delivers a confident performance as the grown up Salim and Siddharth is the perfect foil for him as the embittered Shiva. Darsheel Safary as the young Salim is undoubtedly brilliant.

The competent Seema Biswas is charming as the misguided, guilt-ridden nurse and the catalyst for the unfolding sequence of events. Shahana Goswami smoothly conveys the poignant turmoil of the mother inadvertently caught in the cross-fire, while Ronit Roy is exacting as the frustrated businessman. Anita Majumdar also makes an impression as the hard-hearted, ambitious Emerald, alongside Rahul Bose as her military power-broker husband, Zulfikar.

Rajat Kapoor as Dr.Aziz, Salim's putative grandfather is amusing. Shabana Azmi as Rajat Kapoor's wife, Sriya Sharan as Parvati, Soha Ali Khan as Salim's sister and Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Picture Singh are wasted.

Visually, the film encompasses scenes of war, liberation, celebration, corruption, romance and mourning - all beautifully captured by cinematographer Giles Nuttgens. The visuals are brilliantly layered with Nitin Sawhney's ethereal score, making it a perfect backdrop with the mystical quality of the magic realism scenes; it is like watching a stunning canvas gradually come to life.

Even with Salman Rushdie's narration and screenplay, what probably did not work for "Midnight's Children" are the abrupt scenes. Each scene is brilliant, but in silos, disconnected with the next, making it difficult to capture and bring to life the essence of the book that combines a type of unexplained practicality.

Yet this is a striking, well-produced and thoughtfully designed epic.

Even with all its flaws, "Midnight's Children" is worth a watch. If nothing else, go and watch "Midnight's Children" to satiate your curiosity about this much-talked about novel.

Deepika Padukone: “There are a lot of twists and turns in Race 2″

The 27-year-old sultry actress plays a beautiful, strong and passionate girl in this sequel to Race. She is a ruthless mind dwelling in a brilliant beautiful body.

In a candid and very quick chat with BollySpice reporter Sunny Malik, the Race 2 star talks about the film and much more!

How was your experience shooting Race 2 in Turkey? I saw some photos of you shopping there during the filming.
That is the fun part about shooting there. It’s a great place for holidays. We spent about a month there and whenever we had a day off, we would go shopping. The city offers some amazing food. It was a good experience.

Saif told me you seemed a bit shell-shocked at times with Abbas-Mustan’s direction e.g. ‘Thoda Aur Sexy Karo’ (Do it sexier). What was going on in your head when you were told something like this?
I don’t think there was ever a point when they precisely told me ‘Thodha Aur Sexy Karo’ but there is definitely a type of acting that was expected from all the actors. It took me a couple of days to figure out what exactly they wanted because I have not done such a film before. Because of the fact that Saif has worked with them, he knew what they expected. He helped me understand that.

Was it difficult at times to do a scene because there are so many twists in the film?
You know, every time we were shooting a scene, we were almost given a narration of the entire script again. The baggage that we are carrying in every single take changes in every scene because the equations between the characters change. This is also true to the Race style as the first film was like that. As the equations keep changing, the performance has to change accordingly too. Every time we were shooting a scene, we would sit down with Shiraz (storywriter) and he would tell us this has happened before the scene and this will happen after this scene, then we would play act the scene accordingly.

Are you disappointed that you don’t have songs in the film which you could perform on stage? Katrina Kaif was given great songs to perform on like ‘Zara Zara Touch Me’ and ‘Khwab Dekhe’.
I think, for some films the music catches on with the audience after the release of the film. I think thatRace 2 is one of those films. Also, I disagree with you because the music has become quite popular. All four songs in fact, ‘Party On My Mind’, ‘Be Intehaan’, ‘Lat Lag Gayee’ and ‘Allah Duhai’ are great songs. I also feel that when the film releases tomorrow, the music will catch on with audiences post that.

The film has already released in the UAE. Have you been getting feedback?
I believe that it has opened very big. But it is not something I followed up because I have been giving interviews all day. I don’t know what the update is.

You smashed it with your performance at a recent awards ceremony.
Thank you. I did a live performance after a long time and I think Shiamak choreographed it really well.

The first look of Ram Leela was released today. How are you feeling about the film?
I am very excited about the film. We have had very positive response to the poster. I am excited to see how the film shapes up and I am excited for it to release later this year. It is a very passionate and intense love story. It is a Gujrati take on Romeo and Juliet.

What are your expectations from audiences for Race 2?
I hope the film does really well. The film is true to the brand Race. There are a lot of twists and turns and everyone is plotting and betraying the other to get what they want. It is a very entertaining film.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan will not be gracing our screens together anymore. The newlyweds who have worked together in three films,Tashan, Kurbaan and Agent Vinod may be shining as one of the best off screen couples, but on screen will no longer work together.

Saif told NDTV, he believes that the more comfortable couples are in real life, the more terrible they are to watch on film. He stated, “I don’t need to work with Kareena in order to feel fulfilled. Kareena is a great actor and it would have been nice to work with her.’

The couple who tied the knot in October last year have not managed to score a hit at the box office. Although Agent Vinod which was released under Saif’s own production house, illuminati films it did not manage to wow audiences; instead Love Aaj Kal in which he starred opposite Deepika Padokune, became the second highest grossing film of the year.

The history of the couple’s films is enough to persuade Saif that they should not work together in the future; not even a great script will encourage them to unite, “I feel it burdens the script when you put two of us together. The fun of the scene becomes dull and that’s a danger.”

Saif added that his wife was not offered Race 2 and if she had been offered, they would have both said no.

Well it seems the Khan’s are set on their decision to not work together anymore but we look forward to see them hit our screens in their individual projects.

Ranveer loves Ram Leela First Look!

Set to release on November 29th, Ram Leela, which stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is a Gujrati take on Romeo and Juliet. Since the film was first announced fans could not wait to see this new jodi together! When the first look of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela was revealed fans were bowled over by the dramatic and colorful poster. Not only that, they could not say enough about how gorgeous Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh looked and look together. The poster got rave reviews and many cannot wait to see more! But it is not only the fans and industry folk who are impressed, star Ranveer Singh also has nothing but praise for the poster.

He told IANS, “It looks grand. It has been designed to give you a clue about what this film might be.” 

Going on to reveal a little bit about this highly anticipated film he said, “I think it has given the right signals about what kind of zone the film is in – dramatic, romantic, epic, massy, love story.” But that is all he will say because we hear the story of the film is being kept on the down low.

The film is currently in production and Ranveer says it is ‘going very well.’ Adding that, “It has been a wonderful experience working with Deepika.”

Deepika too is happy with response to the poster says she is very excited about the film. “We have had very positive response to the poster. I am excited to see how the film shapes up and I am excited for it to release later this year.”
