The holidays are coming up fast and the days are dwindling down. I feel like I haven’t even had time to digest my thanksgiving dinner, but here we are! December 9th, and only a couple weeks left to get all our gifts situated. So how about we help you out. Whether it is a little something extra, a last minute gift, super awesome stocking stuffer, or even a little something for yourself :

WE GOT YA COVERED!

Got a special lady, or a sister? Girls, got a best friend whose stuff you borrow on the daily?

Well we’ve gathered some our favorite little items for you (and even some awesome ones I feel get overlooked) :

1.Spirit Hoods Snow Leopard Full Hood: Spirit Hoods have gotten so popular over the last year. Celebrities from Bruno Mars, to Ke$ha, to notorious Khloe Kardashian to even Snoop Dogg have been spotted prowling in one of these babies. Soft, warm and a portion of the proceeds goes to a good cause. The best part is that they are versatile throughout all four seasons (I mean, they are made in Los Angeles guys!)

2.San Diego Hat Co. Knit Utility Cowl Scarf in Yellow: Maybe I’m just biased because A. I love the cold and B. It’s yellow, but the cowl scarf is one of my favorite winter accessories. It’s big enough to cover your shoulders and keep your neck warm. TIP: pull the back over your head to cover your ears. Bingo! Three in one. Perfect.

3.Obey Women’s Horizon Beaded Belt: The Navajo trend has been exploding everywhere. It’s gone from blankets to purses to tees and dresses to even shoes. I’d be covered head to toe. But maybe some of you aren’t ready for that. The Obey Horizon Belt is a perfect little piece of that trend. I can see it thrown over a denim shirt-dress or even just paired with some cut off shorts and a basic tee. Effortless. Best part: it’s beaded

4. Women’s’ Sunglasses: It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter, your eyes should always be 100% protected. Did you know you can still get a tan (or worse, BURN!) on an overcast day? Did you know that snow is reflective? Do yourself, or a loved one, a favor and protect those peepers.

5.Cheap Monday Kat Panties & Liv Bra in Skin: So this might be a little more on the intimate side of gift giving, but I feel like it’s just too cute to pass up. Not too sexy with just the right amount of lace and the perfect shade of soft pink. I could never have too much underwear. And throw in the bra to match? Hallelujah!

6.Vans Women’s Sophie Saddle Shoes: This Vans shoe is a take on the original they made a season before (minus the tan). I actually enjoy the tan. This style has been seen the last couple of fall seasons, and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. Paired with a cute dress or even a flannel and skinnies, these shoes are killer.

7.Flud Opposition Watch in Teal / Seafoam Green: Flud Watches have a variety of styles and colors. The Turntable and Boombox watches have been a huge hit, but this one really catches my eye. Not too flashy, and a pretty teal color. I know this would go with most any outfit I own.

8.Glitterlimes Minty Earrings & Glam Naturale Vintage Key Necklace: These Glitterlime earrings are the perfect festive accessory. They are made from real candy! Don’t fret; these candies are encased in water-resistant, glittery resin. Throw a little holiday cheer onto that little black dress number you have going on. Or do what I do and pair these with the ugliest Christmas sweater ever. So festive!

9.Knitwits Delux Kitten/Cat Ears Pilot Animal Hat in White: Delux is the hat company with all the crazy, cute animal knit hats. I love them, but I don’t think I would be as cute as some of you younger folk in a knit hat with a penguin or monkey face on it. Luckily, Delux has also made this hat; sans face. This pilot hat is fleece lined which makes it extra warm and is detailed only with little kitty ears. There’s even one in black. PUUUUUURRRRRFECT! (Sorry, had to.)

10.Women’s Iron Fist Wallets: Iron Fist has been on fire (I love my Zombie Stompers). They are constantly coming up with the cutest designs to adorn their clothing and shoes. And their wallets and bags are no exception. What makes it better is that there is almost always a matching wallet and/or bag for all you coordinated people. I like to keep mine mismatched and crazy. P.s. We also carry the zombie stomper wallet if you dig that print as much as I do.

11.Delux Cable Knit Mittens in Plum: I go through gloves like no one’s business. And I’m 100% guilty of buying cute gloves over functional gloves. Problem solved! Just like their hats, these are warm & fleece lined. Cute AND functional. I win.

12.Neff Kelly Beanie in Gold: OOHH! Mustard yellow! How I love thee! Cable knit, mustard yellow and pom pom. No brainer. (Pair this hat with those plum colored mittens. Heaven.)

13.Bluebell Flower Headband: Around the office, I think I’m known for my accessories (among many things). I’m a huge fan of jewelry; rings, necklaces stacked on necklaces, earrings. I love it all. That includes hair accessories. I’m a HUGE fan of a turban, especially on a bad hair day. If a turban is a little too much for you, opt for this femme flower head band. Imagine loose curls or even a sleek up do.

14.Pan Am Mini Explorer Bag: Pan Am (the show) made it’s debuted back in September, and these little vintage inspired pieces have been going like crazy. Planning a trip soon? Pick one of these up and be as fashionable up in the clouds as you are down on the ground.

15.Neuvo Digital Watch in Brushed Bronze: I’m a blog junkie and I prowl and creep for the latest and greatest. Something I’ve been noticing and can’t get enough of is men inspired pieces in an overall femme outfit. Blazers, creepers, brogues. Give me them all! I’m head over heels for this Neuvo watch. It looks a little like something I’d find in my dad’s accessories. I love it. Think of “the boyfriend shirt” in accessory form. My favorite part is the slight pink hue the bronze has.

16.Chelsea Crew Jenny Oxford Shoe in Black & Beige: Most girls can’t get enough shoes. I own more shoes than I care to admit. The loafer/brogue style is so in. So what could be better? Slap a heel on it! Ta da!

17.Betsey Johnson Tease Suede Leather Pump in Blush: I’ve had my eye on these since they came in. There is something so sexy and classy about this shoe. And the blush color just gets to me. I’m pretty sure I can find an excuse to own these

18.Palladium Women’s Tactical Boot in Brown & Olive: Palladium makes great boots. This pair is one of my favorites; everything from the style to the color. It’s made of a nylon upper with a gorgeous leather trim. Made with a moisture-wicking plaid print lining, it’ll keep your toes warm and dry. Remember how I said looks good and functional?

I really dig men’s fashion. Either making outfits for someone or just a little men’s fashion for myself (Neuvo watch!!). I actually get quite jealous when the men’s fashion comes in. You guys just get some of the best stuff.

1.Palladium Men’s Pilot Baggy Leather Boot : Palladium boots are so great. Like I said, they look great and are functional. Not just a fashion boot. The Australian Wool lining wicks away or retains moisture to keep your feet comfy. Keep them folded down, or lace them all the way up.

2.Flud Zip Wallet in Black: Flud has expanding from watches to other accessories. This wallet is such a good color blocking combo and is equipt with a full zipper around to keep your valuables safe inside.

3.Obey Bradley ID Holder in Brown: Maybe you don’t like the bulk of an ordinary wallet (or the bulk a wallet makes in your back pocket). This ID holder is perfect in size and has enough compartments for all those little extras.

4.Cotton Treats Bow Tie in Liam & Nathaniel: I’ve been drooling over the bow tie trend since my boss showed them to me. I’m dying to get my hands on one of these little treats (heh, get it?). Pair with a contrasting color or pattern button up, sweet cardigan, and a pair of brogues or loafers. Throw on suspenders if you’re feeling a little daring.

5.Toddland Worst Gift Socks & Underwear Set – White/ Green : Know that one person who just can’t get enough of practical jokes? Well the jokes on you, buddy. You’ll probably be getting Toddland’s Worst Gift Set. Better than coal cause really, who doesn’t need more socks and underwear?

6.Toddland Men’s Grizzly Bear Boxer Briefs: I give props to Toddland designers for always being funny, playful and quirky. What other underwear can you say that about? (Don’t answer that.) We’ve got a good selection of their boxer briefs. Check out the cheeseburger ones. I don’t want to admit they make me hungry when I see them.

7.Publish Hacienda Belt in Brown: I’ve seen my fair share of studded belts growing up. But Publish has found a way to make the studded belt a little classier. Maybe it’s the color, or just the overall way it’s crafted. It’s made of genuine leather detailed with 3 rows of miniature brass studs.

8.Obey Blanket Beanie in Charcoal: As the cold approaches, keep your head warm. Snag one of these and while you’re at it, snag their matching gloves. The special guy not into the stripes? Obey also makes solid color beanies.

9.Brixton Carby Beanie in Brown & Mustard: Mustard yellow for the fellow! Cuff it up, or let it slouch. How about you buy the mustard yellow NEFF beanie for yourself? Matching couples: Too much?

10.Rothco Shemagh Desert Scarf in Tan: These scarves have been a hit over the last couple of years. I own one myself and I think they are a perfect transition scarf from winter to spring. Warm for the winter, but breathable if it gets warmer out.

11.Proof Bird Bamboo Wooden Sunglasses: Our wooden accessories are a big hit. Flud and WeWood watches are so rad, so why don’t you pair them with these wooden sunglasses.

12.Ray-Ban Clubmaster Sunglasses: Ray Ban has been a big name for a while. And the Clubmaster are an original classic. This is definitely one of those accessories you could borrow from your fellow.

13.NYC Subway Map Mighty Wallet: New York: The city that never sleeps. I wish I lived in New York. It’s by far one of my favorite cities. Can’t live there? Give a little keepsake with this Subway map wallet. Constructed of Tyvek, this wallet is tear-resistant, water-resistant and expandable. The Tyvek is folded origami style to create an incredibly tough and versatile wallet. I <3 New York.

14.Generic Surplus Suede Dury Shoe in Teak: Sneakers and boots aside, I feel every man should own a great pair of shoes. The perfect shade of brown, they are so simple, clean and classy. These shoes are just another example of men having an amazing wardrobe piece.

15.WeWOOD Date Watch in Army Green: WeWOOD watches are a great conversation piece. Pair one of these with Proof Wooden Sunglasses for the ultimate combo. And your guy will be thanking you for making him a little more coordinated.

16.Neuvo Digital Watch in Brushed Gold: Back to the Neuvo. But this time in gold. Such a perfect piece for any outfit. If your guy is a little less flashy, opt for the silver or the sleek black. Or go my route and get them all. Too sweet to pass up.

17.Richer Poorer Walk On Socks in Red and Navy & Yellow: Even the men in business suits have been sneaking in a little crazy fashion here and there. Through my blog prowling, I’ve noticed a lot of patterned socks making an appearance under those boring, old, black slacks. And if your fellow isn’t the wall street type, maybe those socks will accentuate his favorite graphic tee.

18.Herschel Supply Co. Little America Backpack in Black: Herschel is a perfect look at the Americana trend that blossomed not too long ago. These are great bags for the out door man. This particular style is my favorite and a best seller.

19.Altamont Sniper Gloves: Shoot, I’ll probably get these for myself. I love these gloves. They have the perfect little Fair Isle pattern that’s coming into trend. They even have matching socks!

20.Brixton Cutter Fingerless Gloves in Heather Grey: Does your guy have a Smartphone? Is he more attached to that thing than you are to oh say, your shoes? Help him out a little with Brixton’s fingerless gloves. They are even detailed with a contrasting leather palm.

I may need to do a mini shopping spree for my loved ones (and myself) after this.

I hope some of our favorites are yours! And I hope I helped some of you in that last minute, perfect stocking stuffer, gift giving dilemma.

I love seeing what you guys give/get from us for the Holidays. Feel free to post photos on our Facebook page!

Happy shopping! And Happy Holidays!

OBEY has long been a well known name with an even bigger known image. Here at PUNK, Obey has come to be a brand we all know and love and the OBEY AWARENESS campaign has made it even more of a reason for us to be proud to carry them.

OBEY AWARENESS is a campaign launched by OBEY’s Shepard Fairey to educate and generate funding for causes such as the Japan relief and Hope for Darfur, the Rock The Vote Campaign, and even the 50th Anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Obey Awareness helps push these topics to the spotlight with the help of their ever growing popularity of the OBEY brand and unmistakable imagery from Shepard Fairey. OBEY AWARENESS not only pushes the topic at hand to be seen and heard, but also to show that there are support systems and help throughout to anyone in need and that to achieve the goal of the cause, change must be made. With the help of many other campaigns, OBEY hopes to further reach out to their younger audience to make aware of causes and problems that need attention.

All profits generated from the sale of the OBEY AWAERNESS product completely support these causes.

Here is what OBEY had to say about their latest campaign, partnered with the Keep A Breast Foundation:

OBEY AWARENESS has partnered with The Keep A Breast Foundation to raise awareness and support for KAB’s continuing efforts to eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection, and support. KAB harnesses the power of art to communicate complex feelings and thoughts about health, the female form and ultimately about breast cancer.

The new OBEY AWARENESS collection has a close connection to Shepard Fairey, whom has been a supporter of The Keep A Breast Foundation since it’s inception 10 years ago. This campaign will pay homage to the women in Shepard’s life including his Aunt whom he lost to breast cancer, his Mother, a breast cancer survivor, and his wife and two daughters. Obey has come together with KAB to make sure that breast cancer prevention, early detection, and support are always available to those in need. All profits of this collection will be donated to help fund KAB’s support, education and prevention programs.

The statistics supporting the need for breast cancer awareness are alarming. With only 5-10% breast cancer having a hereditary link KAB fills an important gap not currently being addressed by other breast cancer awareness organizations by creating breast cancer awareness programs that educate young people on breast cancer prevention. KAB’s awareness campaigns educate young people on how to identify specific threats and warning signs of breast cancer, and inform and educate about the dangers of toxic chemicals in our environment and food supply and their link to breast cancer initiation. Nestled in our indestructible concrete compound at the Punk.com headquarters, our chances of surviving are a smidge higher, not to mention the guns and ammunition we’ve stockpiled in a top secret section of the warehouse. We’re ready for the <del>resurrected </del>reanimated …are YOU? Don’t procrastinate until it’s too late, because the living dead don’t wait. As a public service, we present this comprehensive checklist to help you protect your precious flesh and save those brains.

1. Emergency Outfit

It’s the last day on earth, so you better look badass. Should your enemy be of the male persuasion, it’s wise to divert his attention with feminine wiles. We recommend the awfully distracting Hell Bunny Zombie Dress, covered in a clash of bold patterns that hypnotize upon first glance.

To tread through the rubble of the post-apocalyptic terrain, try Palladium’s tough Tactical Boot. These killer kicks are solidly constructed, water resistant, and fit for a modern-day militia.

As survivors emerge from the debris and scattered remains of the doubly-dead, planning an aftermath celebration is the logical next step. Slip off those boots, ‘cause there ain’t no disaster on the dance floor. Instead, try the ironic Iron Fist Zombie Stomper Platforms and show off your stylish sense of humor. You know you’ve been waiting patiently in your bunker to break them out!

2. Emergency Kit:

A disaster-ready kit is ne cessary at all times in case of emergency. Do you know what to include?

Backpack: The Obey Uptown Mountain Backpack is styled like traditional army supply backpacks, and is deep and wide enough to store your supplies.

Belt (for strangulation): It is advised to remove the head of your attacker, but before you do, try the versatile Obey Everyday Web Belt for a quick cinch in a pinch.

First Aid Kit: For scrapes, bruises, claw marks, and the cleansing of undead excretions.

Flashlight: In case of power plant invasion and felled utility poles.

Radio: Stay tuned to the Emergency Alert System for further instructions.

Assorted tools: As weaponry, or to use for makeshift contraptions.

Ample Food & Water: Fuel of the living.

3. Plans and Preparations:

Design an escape route from everywhere you think you might be when the zombies strike. This may be a challenge.

Stock your basement. If you happen to live in an apartment complex, locate your local fallout shelters with the rusting radioactive signs.

Attune your hearing to distant monotone moaning.

Avoid historical burial grounds at all costs, as they are the resting place of war heroes with bayonet experience.

Adjust your attitude. Become a warrior spirit. When the risen are tackling down your front door, your mother is not going to be there, and she probably couldn’t take them on anyway.

Prepare wisely, prepare NOW. The marathon of sleepless nights you spent fixated on your first-person shooter game will not help you in a crisis. Get “real.”

We hope this helps you to get started as the end draws near, and in the post-apocalyptic wake, we’ll still be here.

Load up your zeppelin and don’t forget those brassy bits, today we’re going Steampunk! I have been enthralled by anything Steampunk for years, and I doubt I’ll ever get over it. Its influence can be found in just about every medium; in books, comics, movies, television, music, fashion, exterior & interior design (check out these marvelous Steampunk’d items); it has even managed its way into some of the highly anticipated video games. Point is, it’s just about everywhere, and I hope it keeps its place in the subculture spotlight. Check out this cool letter between author K.W. Jeter and critic Faren Miller which outlines the “birth” of the term. While you’re at it, take a gander at the collection of Steampunky men’s items I put together below. Thanks to Steampunk, I dream that perhaps someday, I can have my own floating island in the clouds. Have you ever had a Steampunk inspired dream?
The Herschel Supply Co. has roots back to the 1900s; the company is named for the town of Herschel outside of which the founders settled their homestead. Originally barrel makers, the company has come a long way. While Herschel may still be family owned, the great grandchildren of the founders took Herschel in a whole new direction. They now design backpacks and bags with classic, simple lines and modern features for everyday use. For Herschel, the beauty is in the details. The bags are sturdy and well-made with a soft lining in the laptop sleeves and the signature candy striped interior. Herschel is vintage inspiration meets contemporary fashion.

Now that the path is cleared in the new year, will you be straying the side streets or the strutting the catwalk into 2011? Before you take that first step, let’s sort through the trends that 2010 hung on the rack.

In the absence of tight-laced dress codes, style sharing and a newfound fashion freedom are shaping how we decorate ourselves. Social fashion sites and blogs—namely lookbook.nu, chictopia.com, and weardrobe.com— are rapidly gaining a strong global following by providing an outlet for users to showcase their latest ensemble. Though the digital age has inspired limited futuristic garb off-the-runway, it has created a way to search and cherry-pick from the endless images of trends past and present. As a result, today’s look is structured upon vintage vogues with a dash of modern edginess and plenty of room for personalization.

Ladies:

In 2010, womenswear was defined with a throwback to a classic look roughly modeled around the 1960’s a-line silhouette. The result? A style that’s modest and unmistakably feminine, with youthful flair and downright adorable accessories.

The Cream of the Tops:

Obey High Dive Dress: http://www.punk.com/1398552.html

Gentle Fawn Elevate Crop Top: http://www.punk.com/1494597.html

Lip Service Steampunk Lace Shirt : http://www.punk.com/1412182.html

Texture, texture texture! Lacy or silken sheer tops accented the ladylike look. The ever-versatile striped shirt was the star of summer and complemented outfits with ease. Dresses were simple, sweet, and often cinched with a belt at the waist to mirror the silhouette.c

Rock In Bottoms:

Fables by Barrie Dinghy Ruby Shorts-Red– http://www.punk.com/1392536.html

Bb Dakota Bellina Skirt – black tulle: http://www.punk.com/1458512.html

High-waisted skirts and shorts were on the rise, and layering the legs with over-the-knee socks and tights finished the look. A fling with the dramatic maxi skirt could possibly see more attention in the coming year.

Tripp Super Stretch Denim Legging – Black: http://www.punk.com/1350583.html

Skinny jeans still reign supreme, as does the spandex legging, which—love it or hate it—has become an accepted alternative to pants. Then along came their stretchy lovechild, the “jegging,” perhaps the most buzzed about article of clothing in 2010. While it may be a godsend to women and their ongoing dilemma of ill-fitting jeans, the jegging still faces mixed reviews.

Paws and Prints:

Creature couture and tribal-inspired designs prowled their way into our hearts and closets, sampling everything from feathers to tails. And oh, FAUX! Spirit Hoods, the crown of the animal hat kingdom, was spotted on some fierce famous figures like Ke$ha and Fergie.

Shoe Gazing:

Wanted Babel Over The Knee Riding Boot – http://www.punk.com/1458125.html

Iron Fist Muerte Punk Platform Heels: http://www.punk.com/1489774.html

Chunky wedges, booties, and riding boots stomped onto center stage and became the new must-have kicks. Distinctive designs have made footwear the focus piece, such as the vivid Iron Fist platforms that simply stand on their own.

Necessary Accessories:

Obey 25HR double knuckle stud ring: http://www.punk.com/1398727.html

Obey Eye of the tiger II ring: http://www.punk.com/1450044.html

This review would not be complete without a tip of the hat to Lady Gaga. Though her outlandish and bizarre costumes embody the extremes of contemporary dress, bits of her style have trickled down to everyday wear. Girlishly garish accessories such as oversized ribbons, faux-hair bows, and bunny ears topped heads and surpassed silliness. 2010 also gave a hand to finger fashion with multiple rings and manicured nails.

Ben Sherman Melton Military Coat: http://www.punk.com/1402007.html

It’s no surprise that menswear saw little variation. However, as men’s fashion consciousness is readily embraced, a well-assembled outfit makes for a proper presentation without compromising masculinity.

This year, powerful military-inspired pieces made the ranks, complementing the gender with its broad shapes and tough hardware.

Chest Pieces:

Ben Sherman Men’s Donnegal Blazer: http://www.punk.com/1401644.html

AntiDesigns Men’s Slayers Shirt: http://www.punk.com/1502124.html

A graphic tee may say it all, though sprucing it up with a cardigan or blazer adds to the conversation. Jeans made the blazer and buttondown combo more informal and undeniably cool. (see above)

Taking Up the Slacks:

Levi’s 514 in Raw Grey: http://www.punk.com/1419089.html

You can’t go wrong with straight and slim leg jeans. Skinny jeans remained in question, worn mostly by celebrities and fringe groups. A cuffed bottom hem spotlighted sneaks.

Recurring Patterns:

RVCA Men’s Short-Sleeved Plaid Shirt: http://www.punk.com/1294014.html

A standout against solids, plaid print made its mark in menswear this year, taking the grunge out of flannel.

Though we’ve closed the book on 2010, make sure you save your notes! Remember, there’s no better study guide than stranger-gazing on the streets. Presentation IS everything. Sample, experiment, and find what suits you. The concrete runway awaits.

Happy new year! (-Christina)

While completing a tour of all the mini-golf courses in Massachusetts with his wife, tattooist Colby Butler, the artist and amateur crypto-zoologist noticed the elusive Ice Cream Person. A half human-half ice cream hybrid, Brian wanted to document this underrated crypto-zoological specimen. Hoping to elevate the Ice Cream Person to the legendary status of its cohorts like Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster. On his blog, you can view this collection of evidence, as well as rare footage of an ice cream person in the wild. If you’ve seen one of these elusive hybrids, you can submit images to support his findings.

Drawing evidence from fellow artists, monster hunters, and even some little kids, Brian has collected scoops of evidence from depictions of this specimen. Kid Robot in Miami recently hosted an exhibit of Brian’s findings, plus artwork from other notorious artists, like Shepard Fairey, MCA Evil Design, and many more. Armed with a wall of empty cones and some markers, exhibit go-ers where allowed to document their own ice cream people experiences, which are now showcased in the collection.

Recently, we noticed that we had an ice cream person of our very own on punk.com. Personally, I was very excited to submit this wallet from Poketo, depicting a fanged- ice cream person. You can see our submission to icecreampeople here.

What a statement the understated little black dress can be. But did you know that wearing a fashionable “little black dress” started in the 20′s? Wearing black was originally reserved for funerals and mourning. Popular convention stated that it was indecent at other times. It wasn’t until 1926, when designer Coco Chanel published a picture of a short, simple, black dress in American Vogue that the style really caught on. Over the years, the little black dress became a part of history as more women embraced its simplicity and elegance. In 1961, pop culture furthered the style, when Audrey Hepburn wore an iconic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s designed by Givenchy. Decades later, the little black dress is now considered to be a closet staple. Admittedly, I have a bit of a shopping problem, so I might have a few “staple” little black dresses. But I wanted to share a few of my favorites from Punk.com.

Stop Staring Tiffany Dress

The Stop Staring! Tiffany Dress is so classic and so cute. I love the understated scoop neck and how the swing skirt is so full. A good cut for almost any body type. I’ve been watching a lot of Mad Men on DVD, so all I want to wear is classic 50′s and 60′s style dresses.

Obey Strappy Disco Dress

The Obey Strappy Disco Dress is perfect if you want something a little more modern. Stretchy and sparkly black fabric, cut into a cut sweetheart neckline. I’m a sucker for the little details, like the ribbon straps, and I love dresses with pockets.

It has an adorable vintage style with updated details. You could wear this to almost any party, from the last minute gathering at a friend’s house, to that work party, and anything in between.

So whatever your holiday plans, a little black dress is the perfect statement. Plus, you can accessorize it with any color to make it truly stand out.

Sunday night was the Boston Music Awards. For its 23rd year, the BMA’s showcased the best of Boston’s notorious music scene. This was an awards ceremony that was more like a mini-festival meets massive party that cascaded across the open space of the 5 floors of the Liberty Hotel. The Liberty Hotel was previously a notorious jail, the Charles Street Jail, which was built in 1851. The hotel has beautiful modern decor, but kept the historic architecture. The evening was jam packed with local artists, the who’s who of the city’s nightlife, and a few of us from Punk.com! There were a lot of very fashionable people; rock n’ roll fashion was in full effect. Awards were given to the best of Boston across many music genres, it was great to see so many great artists in one place.

She is a tireless performer and musician. You might know her best as half of the cabaret punk duo, the Dresden Dolls. (When I worked at the Newbury Street Newbury Comics Store, she used to come in all the time. She was always really sweet). Amanda sang a haunting rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” and played along on her ukulele during her acceptance speech. It was stunning.

Coming into work without makeup? A nightmare!

Being photographed without makeup and posting it for the world to see? No way!!

… WAY.

One fateful morning, the ladies of Punk.com and Newbury Comics volunteered to have some nude photos taken. Now, now, settle down—only our faces were nude, though it felt as if many more layers were missing…

Alanna from Smokeshow Make-up Artistry and Kim

Oversized sunglasses and a few bemoaning status updates later, our courage was rewarded with a makeover by the very talented Alanna of Smokeshow Make-Up Artistry and Danielle Mignosa, of Danielle Does My Hair and the Hair Solution. Alanna knows MAC like the back of her hand (which also serves as her blending palette) and toys with the elements of shadow and contour, taken from her background in photography. Her expansive list of clients includes the likes of David LaChapelle, Pamela Anderson, and Cirque du Soleil, and her work has been featured on HBO, E!, and Lifetime. Punk was thrilled to have her stop by, and after one quick glance at our faces, she worked her magic. We adored the results.

What did we learn?

Models are real people. And real people can be models. Punk strives to prove this, since we always scoop up coworkers and friends for photoshoots. We’re pretty sure our customers are real people, too.

Our before-and-after experiment shows that the transformation to glamour is standard practice with props to foundation and Photoshop. We exist in such a beauty and visually-stimulated culture, that this faux flawlessness is everywhere you turn. So, darlings, no self-consciousness when you gaze at the cover of the latest fashion mag and wish your cheekbones would migrate north. Remember that most of the “perfection” you see is simply sleight of hand.

(For the record, this was most definitely a fashion experiment, and certainly not an excuse for the girls to play with makeup and clothes. Promise.)
