Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
Release Date: 2010
Series: Lumatere Chronicles #1
Age Group: Young Adult
Received From: Bought
IBSN: 9780763643614
Blurb:

At the age of nine, Finnikin is warned by the gods that he must sacrifice a pound of flesh to save his kingdom. He stands on the rock of the three wonders with his friend Prince Balthazar and Balthazar’s cousin, Lucian, and together they mix their blood to safeguard Lumatere.

But all safety is shattered during the five days of the unspeakable, when the king and queen and their children are brutally murdered in the palace. An impostor seizes the throne, a curse binds all who remain inside Lumatere’s walls, and those who escape are left to roam the land as exiles, dying by the thousands in fever camps.

Ten years later, Finnikin is summoned to another rock–to meet Evanjalin, a young novice with a startling claim: Balthazar, heir to the throne of Lumatere, is alive. This arrogant young woman claims she’ll lead Finnikin and his mentor, Sir Topher, to the prince. Instead, her leadership points them perilously toward home. Does Finnikin dare believe that Lumatere might one day rise united? Evanjalin is not what she seems, and the startling truth will test Finnikin’s faith not only in her but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

In a bold departure from her acclaimed contemporary novels, Printz Medalist Melina Marchetta has crafted an epic fantasy of ancient magic, feudal intrigue, romance, and bloodshed that will rivet you from the first page.

I don’t even know where to begin. Wow…just WOW. I’ve read two of Marchetta’s books, Jellicoe Road and Saving Francesca. They were both incredible. Melina Marchetta is probably one of the best writers of our time. But I had no idea how that was going to work in a high fantasy novel. I really shouldn’t have questioned it, because I now know that Melina can do absolutely no wrong. I thought she was amazing before reading this book, but now I think she way beyond amazing. I don’t even have words for how amazing.

I love high fantasy. It’s really making a run for my favorite genre, so reading Finnikin of the Rock was a necessity. With a lot of fantasy novels there’s so much world building within the first half of the book that it can get a little tedious, but the world building in Finnikin was done in such a way that I never ever even considered being bored. I was captivated from page 1. There’s so much history and detail in the world. It’s so believable. It would be impossible to not get invested in this world of Finnikin’s. It’s darker than I was expecting. Full of murder and horrible curses. People have been ripped from their country and loved ones, but that just made me even more committed to the story.

It all seems so hopeless, but Finnikin, Evanjalin, and their other travel companions are the spark in this otherwise sad story. You can feel their hope and longing for home. It was infectious. I was so full of anxiety for them because I wanted things to work out so bad. Finnikin was a excellent character. He was strong and brave. He was stubborn at times, but what young man isn’t. He was so selfless and wise beyond is years. How could you not love that? Evanjalin was incredible. I loved that the girl was the mysterious one in this book. She had all the power and Finnikin was the one that got to be in awe of her. I loved the dynamic between them. Their relationship built slowly, oh so slowly. Seeing it through Finnikin’s eyes was fantastic. Some of the conversations between them made me swoon. I really loved every second of it, can you tell?

It’s not enough that Marchetta wrote these amazing characters and created this extraordinary world, no she also filled it with twists and turns that I never saw coming. I usually figure out plot elements pretty early on in a story, not with Finnikin. I maybe figured the Biggest Thing about two pages before it was revealed and WOW. I was just astounded when all of the lose ends started coming together. I was in awe! Really, there were several occasions that I just had to put the book down and digest the awesomeness.

I cannot stress to you enough how breathtaking this book is. This review does it no justice. If you read one book that I recommend to you in 2012 make it this one. Please. It will go above and beyond your expectations.

I have the a old really worn out copy. Just looking at it makes me remember how I fell in love with that book.

The Difference Between You and Me by Madeleine George
Release Date: March 15, 2012
Age Group: Young Adult
Received From: Publisher

Jesse cuts her own hair with a Swiss Army knife. She wears big green fisherman’s boots. She’s the founding (and only) member of NOLAW, the National Organization to Liberate All Weirdos. Emily wears sweaters with faux pearl buttons. She’s vice president of the student council. She has a boyfriend.

These two girls have nothing in common, except the passionate “private time” they share every Tuesday afternoon. Jesse wishes their relationship could be out in the open, but Emily feels she has too much to lose. When they find themselves on opposite sides of a heated school conflict, they each have to decide what’s more important: what you believe in, or the one you love?

This book really wasn’t anything like I was expecting. I thought it was mostly going to be a love story about Emily coming to terms with who she is. That really wasn’t the case at all. The story revolves around Jesse the most and it’s really about her finding herself, standing up for what she believes in, and just growing up. Emily’s role in the story is a bit smaller and infuriating.

I really loved Jesse. She was very complex and very unique. She didn’t care to be different but her feelings for Emily really made her vulnerable. That made her feel extremely believable to me. Throughout the story Jesse grows. She has to figure out what’s more important to her, her secret relationship with Emily or her beliefs. I had a lot of fun watching her journey and I think we could all stand to be a little more like Jesse.

Emily on the other hand….The book is told from alternating points of view with Jesse in the spotlight more often, but when Emily had her turn I couldn’t help but pity this poor naive girl. She is vice president of student council and very serious about it. She also has a very serious boyfriend, but she meets Jesse once a week for a short make out session. She was very unlikeable, but I think she was supposed to be. That’s just who she was. It was a great way to show the contrast between them. Props to Madeleine George for writing such very different but equally interesting characters.

The Difference Between You and Me isn’t a romance so don’t go into it expecting one. It’s an intelligent story about a girl struggling to figure out who she is in a unique situation. I enjoyed every second of it and I think you will too!

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard
Release Date: March 13, 2012
Age Group: Young Adult
Received From: NetGalley
IBSN: 9780385739375
Blurb:

It all begins with a stupid question:

Are you a Global Vagabond?

No, but 18-year-old Bria Sandoval wants to be. In a quest for independence, her neglected art, and no-strings-attached hookups, she signs up for a guided tour of Central America—the wrong one. Middle-aged tourists with fanny packs are hardly the key to self-rediscovery. When Bria meets Rowan, devoted backpacker and dive instructor, and his outspokenly humanitarian sister Starling, she seizes the chance to ditch her group and join them off the beaten path.

Bria’s a good girl trying to go bad. Rowan’s a bad boy trying to stay good. As they travel across a panorama of Mayan villages, remote Belizean islands, and hostels plagued with jungle beasties, they discover what they’ve got in common: both seek to leave behind the old versions of themselves. And the secret to escaping the past, Rowan’s found, is to keep moving forward.

But Bria comes to realize she can’t run forever, no matter what Rowan says. If she ever wants the courage to fall for someone worthwhile, she has to start looking back.

Kirsten Hubbard lends her artistry into this ultimate backpacker novel, weaving her drawings into the text. Her career as a travel writer and her experiences as a real-life vagabond backpacking Central America are deeply seeded in this inspiring story.

I adore this book. Adore! I probably missed my opportunity to backpack a long, long time ago, but Wanderlove makes me feel like I was right there with Bria in Central America. I got to feel dirty and grungy right along side Bria. I saw all the sights with her and most importantly I fell for Rowan just like she did. What I’m getting at is Wanderlove is perfectly depicted. I felt like I was there and that made reading this book a wonderful experience.

It did take me just a little while to get into the story but once Bria and Rowan started connecting the book became very hard to put down. Bria was a great main character. She was easy to connect to and her problems were really realistic. I loved her almost cynical outlook on things. I laughed out loud on several occasions. Rowan is…just really fantastic. He’s intelligent and he has all the life experiences that Bria doesn’t have and that makes him irresistible. The connection between the two of them was undeniable. The feelings and tension between the two of them builds slowly throughout the book. I loved every second of it.

Another remarkable element of the book is Bria’s artwork. I had the galley on my Kindle so I was really surprised to see that. I always looked forward to seeing another one. It really added to the overall affect of the story. I can’t wait to see it in the finished book!

I can’t say enough good things about this book. I highly, highly recommend it. Be prepared to take a journey through Central America with plenty of bugs and mud when you open these pages. Also be prepared to fall in love.

I had no idea how to design for WP and I was coming in completely blind. So needless to say I was thrilled when I found some really helpful sites and managed to get my design up and running fairly quickly!

What do you think of it? It’s definitely different. I wanted to go with a more simplistic look because that’s really more my style anyway. I plan to put more time and effort into my post setup and things like that too. I’m really unnaturally excited about my drop down menu! Most of the options are blank pages at the moment, but I’ll be fixing that over the next few weeks. I would love it if you grabbed my new button to replace the old one.

I think I will start offering WordPress designs in the next few months on my design blog. I need a little more practice first.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome people at The Broke and the Bookish

This is a anti-Valentine Top Ten Tuesday! This week’s topic is books that broke my heart a little (or in my case, a lot).

1. Delirium by Lauren Oliver
This book seriously broke my heart. Seriously.

2. Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma
The ending of this one was very unexpected for me. I blubbered. It was an ugly cry.

3. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Maggie Stiefvater has said that she wrote this with the intention of making readers cry. It worked very well. My heart was broken! But I loooove that it was mended before the end. Yay for no cliffhanger!

4. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenneggar
This broke my heart more than any book ever. I don’t think anything will ever top it.

5. I Now Pronounce You Someone Else by Erin McCahn
This was one of those books that subtly broke my heart. Where you know it’s for the best, but still….it’s sad.

6. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
This one broke my heart for many reasons. Namely because it really wasn’t what I wanted to happen….(although I am not team Gale! Team Peeta all the way) and…(spoiler!) Prim.

7. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince & Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
You know why…

8. Crank by Ellen Hopkins
So heartbreaking on so many levels.

9. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
I don’t see how this couldn’t break your heart.

10. Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert
So many sad things take place in this book. It’s a little depressing but a fantastic book.

I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
Lauren Oliver delivers an electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Delirium. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.

Delirium was my favorite book of the year back in 2010 when I read it. It surpassed every single other book that I read before it, and honestly I haven’t read a book that made me feel like that since. You know that feeling I’m talking about. It’s what readers live for, right? Being consumed by a story. Living and breathing it in those few hours or days that you are reading it. Books that just blow you away and leave you in awe for days afterward. That was Delirium for me. That’s some back story for you, so that you understand just how much Pandemonium meant to me.

I’m going to start off by saying this is going to be a terribly hard book to review. I don’t want to spoil the first book or this book. So this will probably be vague at best. If you’ve read Delirium you probably have one huge question for Pandemonium. I did. It was something that I needed know. I had hoped and wished and wondered about it often in the year between reading these books. But ultimately I was surprised, but not the way I thought I was going to be. No, I was surprised that when I started this book I stopped wondering. It’s a testament to Lauren Oliver’s writing that she could make me forget about that burning question for awhile. I was so captivated by this new hard and scary world that Lena was living in that Alex became a afterthought. That really, really surprised me.

Don’t get me wrong he was always in my mind, because he was always in Lena’s. Just glimpses and small passages full of such longing and emotion it would bring tears to my eyes. But Lena’s life is very different in this book. She has became hard and so strong. Really this second book was much more about getting to know Lena. And I must say that I love what I saw. She is so complex and well written.

There are some new characters introduced. Some I loved, some infuriated me. All of them were pivotal. Once again Oliver’s writing makes me feel something that I didn’t think was possible. I can’t say what that is, but when you read it you will know.

I’m almost done, I promise! The book is written in a very different kind of format. A Then and Now format. This made the book super intense. There was always some horrifying action happening. It was completely impossible to put down. As far as sequels go this is a incredible one. It’s not at all what I was expecting. It ended up being so much more.

The ending did not destroy me like Delirium‘s, but I might be destroyed a different way. By questions. Lots and lots of questions. There’s also a tiny bit of frustration too. Because that is not how I wanted things to play out, but I’m going to leave it in Lauren Oliver’s capable hands. I trust that she will get us where we need to be in Requiem. Overall, I don’t think I could have asked for a better sequel to a book that I loved beyond measure. Lauren Oliver is a master of her craft.

If you’ve read the book already and want to discuss, I am totally up for it!

Last year I posted this and asked my reader friends what you thought of the Millennium Trilogy. After reading what people thought I promptly decided the books weren’t for me. Everyone said the first book was horribly horribly slow and I don’t do well with slow pacing. So I didn’t really give them a second thought until a friend of mine listened to the audiobook. She went on and on about how amazing it was. Then when the movie was released she had no one to go with and since I’m such an awesome friend I went with her. Even though I did not want to. I even complained about it on Twitter. I also found out it was almost 3 hours long after we were already at the theater. (It was the 9:00 show too…)

Now that I have given you that long back story let me tell you that was utterly enthralled by 20 minutes into the movie. I remember thinking ‘Now I’m going to have to take back all those things I said on Twitter ’cause this is spectacular.’ It really, really was. I saw the movie again 2 days later and then bought book 1 and 2 the next day. I’m hooked obviously.

So now that I’ve read the book do you want to hear my thoughts? Everyone said the book is sloooow. They even said that it takes 200 pages to stop being boring. That is all very true. I don’t know if the fact that I saw the movie first made it more or less boring for me. That doesn’t really make sense…See I knew the book was going to get incredible it just takes awhile to get there. I definitely think that it’s worth it in the end.

I read the book while reading other books. That’s not something that I do often but I think it’s a good approach for this one. It does take about 200 pages to hook you but when it does…Wow! The mystery is so so compelling and even a tad bit creepy. I think that it’s one of the best I have ever read. Lisbeth Salander is amazing. Ahhhmazing. Mikel was okay…I liked him better in the movie–probably because it was Daniel Craig. I can’t wait to read book two and find out more about Lisbeth. (Side note: Mara Rooney is nominated for best actress for her role as Lisbeth and it is well deserved)

I knew before watching the movie that there are some graphic scenes. Namely a rape scene. It is graphic but I think it’s much more graphic in the movie, oddly enough. I’ve never been bothered by stuff like that so it really wasn’t an issue for me.

Overall, I do recommend the book. Yeah, it’s really slow in the beginning but the mystery surrounding Harriet Vanger and the compelling character that is Lisbeth Salander make it worth the read.

Release Date: February 8, 2012
Received From: Netgalley
IBSN: 9781455503063
Blurb:

We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.
Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it’s his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.
When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

Pure was nothing like what I was expecting. Nothing. It’s dark and twisty and crazy imaginative. It took me a little while to fall into the world, but once I did there was no looking back.

This is a very different dystopian. There are aspects that most books in the genre have, but Julianna Baggott takes everything just a few steps farther. Some of it, like the people fusing with objects or even animals parts, are horrifying and completely unimaginable. But that was what made me sit down and take notice of this story. Then there is the other aspect of corrupt, evil government turning on its own people. This is something that doesn’t seem too far fetched and that makes the story even more powerful.

The world in which Pure takes place was really my favorite part of the book. It’s a little on the disturbing side and if there’s anything out there like it I haven’t saw it. The book is told from alternating points of view. I found that I liked Pressia, she was strong and capable. I didn’t connect with Partridge as much, but once I found the rhythm of there voices I enjoyed the story much more. That took a little while, but it was worth it in the end. Oddly enough I really enjoyed El Capitan’s perspectives. He was very well developed and I just found him fascinating.

Overall I enjoyed Pure. It might not be a book for everyone since it’s on the darker side of dystopian, but it was a fantastic and richly detailed world.

The premise is so incredibly unique and creative what sparked the idea for you?

I was writing literary fabulist short stories — a number of which had fusings. They weren’t working. At the same time, I wanted to write something ambitious — some real world building. When I realized that this one character (and then some of the others followed) belonged in this world, the two things snapped into place. And there she was — a girl hiding in a cabinet, a girl with a doll-head fused to her fist.

What was your writing process like? Did you do a lot of outlining?

I always make maps and then I peel off and then write a new map and peel off and write a new map etc … I have to think I know where I’m going even if I’m derailed along the way.

Was it difficult writing from multiple narratives in Pure? Did you have a favorite voice or one that was particularly hard to write?

There was another character, Arturo, who had a huge role and his own voice in the first draft. He was cut entirely. There may be one vestige of him left, a name somewhere, but he’s gone. I miss him. Lyda surprised me. She showed up late and then I slipped her in earlier in rewrites. She continues to surprise me in FUSE, the second novel in the series. I think because I wasn’t set on her voice, even as I was writing it, she had to prove she was important enough to the narration to deserve to stay. She fought and I’m glad she did.

If you could have dinner with any 3 authors (dead or alive) who would they be?

I’d have to pick all dead, right? I mean, the premise allows for that possibility so I have to take it. Flannery O’Connor, The Fitzgeralds (but they’re counting as ONE — a couple — what’s one without the other?), and Poe — a not drunk-to-the-point-of-being-incoherent Poe, just feisty, argumentative, anxious Poe. That is one hell of a dinner party right there. Flannery will be drawn to the grotesque display but sober and perhaps moralizing. The Fitzgeralds will be messy, perhaps fighting, and Poe — strapped and looking for a drink and being morose himself. Good stuff.

Have you read anything good lately?

THE NIGHT SWIMMER by Matt Bondurant should be coming out soon. I blurbed it in the summer. A wild book set on the wild coast of Ireland — a novel for adults.

Thanks so much Julianna! If you want to find out more about Pure you can read my review, visit the website, and watch the trailer!

Francesca is stuck at St. Sebastians, a boys’ school that’s pretends it’s coed by giving the girls their own bathroom. Her only female companions are an ultra-feminist, a rumored slut, and an an impossibly dorky accordion player. The boys are no better, from Thomas who specializes in musical burping to Will, the perpetually frowning, smug moron that Francesca can’t seem to stop thinking about.

Then there’s Francesca’s mother, who always thinks she knows what’s best for Francesca—until she is suddenly stricken with acute depression, leaving Francesca lost, along, and without an inkling who she really is. Simultaneously humorous, poignant, and impossible to put down, this is the story of a girl who must summon the strength to save her family, her social life and—hardest of all—herself.

I didn’t quite know what to expect going into Saving Francesca. I don’t know that I had ever actually read the description. I just knew two facts, it’s by Melina Marchetta and lots of people love it. That was all I needed to know. I’ll admit the it did take me a few chapters to fall into it, but after that I was completely captivated.

Saving Francesca is a coming of age story. A believable and very, very realistic one. Francesca is sad. She’s had to change schools and leave all of her friends behind. Her very vivacious mother isn’t getting out of bed anymore and her father isn’t doing anything about it. Basically Francesca feels alone, abandoned, but she doesn’t whine or complain. She tells her story with dry wit and honesty. Her voice was probably the most realistic I have read in a long time. I would go so far as to say that she is one of my favorite characters ever.

What I loved most about the story is that it has this quiet, subtle feel about it. I don’t really know how to explain it, but by the end of it I was just in awe of the beauty of the story. I also loved that we as readers see things that Francesca doesn’t really pick up on. Like how she is making friends. Really, really good friends. I loved them all. They were an odd assortment.

The romance is also a little subtle. It happens slowly and it was one of those that melted me. Just about every scene with Francesca and Will made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I loved this book. I can’t recommend it enough. Please read it. My review doesn’t do it justice at all. You need to find out for yourself.

This week’s topic is top ten books I would give to someone who doesn’t like to read (gasp!). The first few are obvious, right?

1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Of course this is number one.

2. Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Say what you will, but these books have turned countless people into readers.

3. The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Another obvious, but mandatory choice.

4. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

This is the book that turned me into a reader!

5. Wake by Lisa McMann

I think this is a perfect choice because it’s short and so, so captivating.

6. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

This book hooks you so fast! It’s so hard to put down which makes it a great choice for non-readers.

7. If I Stay by Gayle Forman

This one is also utterly captivating and moving.

8. Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty

It’s hilariuos! I couldn’t be friends with people that didn’t like this book.

A teen’s world comes crashing down in this compulsively readable YA debut that’s as literary as it is commercial.Gabby Gardiner wakes up in a hospital bed looking like a cautionary ad for drunk driving—and without a single memory of the accident that landed her there. But what she can recall, in frank and sardonic detail, is the year leading up to the crash.
As Gabby describes her transformation from Invisible Girl to Trendy Girl Who Dates Billy Nash (aka Most Desirable Boy Ever), she is left wondering: Why is Billy suddenly distancing himself from her? What do her classmates know that Gabby does not? Who exactly was in the car that night? And why has Gabby been left to take the fall?
As she peels back the layers of her life, Gabby begins to realize that her climb up the status ladder has been as intoxicating as it has been morally complex…and that nothing about her life is what she has imagined it to be.

I’m not big on reading book summaries. I skim them when I first discover the book to decide whether or not I want to read it then I promptly forget it. So when I opened the pages of Where It Began I was very quickly intrigued. It definitely starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up. The author knows how to hook a reader. I had lots of different emotions while reading, but I never once wanted to put it down.

Gabby isn’t exactly the most likeable girl. She’s pretty self centered and super naive, but that’s just what happens when you have lead the kind of life she has. She may be a little unlikeable but she’s still a very sympathetic character. She’s in this horrible situation and you can’t help but feel for her…even if you want to shake some sense into her from time to time.

I think some readers will take issue with Gabby’s utter devotion to Billy Nash, but it seems perfectly realistic to me. I had an older boyfriend when I was a teen. He was popular and cute but a total jerk. I had that blind devotion too. So that whole aspect of the story was easy for me to relate to. Even if it was infuriating…in a good way though.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. It was a page turner and very unique. I’m looking forward to more from Ann Redisch Stampler in the future.
