I pretty much adore this topic but I don’t watch a lot of TV so I’m not really familiar with a lot of reality TV shows. That made it a harder, but here’s what I came up with:

If you’ve ever met these two ladies then you know just how hilariously awesome this would be.

I think this show suits Jackson well!

I know I already used this show, but if you’ve read the Heist Society books you know that Ally Carter is good at planning and pulling things off….I can only assume that would work well on The Amazing Race.

I don’t know why but it just seems fitting.

Side-note: I’m leaving for vacation today so I won’t be commenting on TTT posts as much as usual. But I’ll try to catch up asap!

When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

I was really unprepared going into Something Like Normal. I’d saw people raving about, but I completely missed the memo about this being from a male perspective. What a happy surprise that was! I used to avoid books with male narratives like the plague but now I count them among my favorites, especially if they’re done well and Something Like Normal is done extraordinarily well.

Something Like Normal is only 224 pages but Trish Doller fills every one of those pages with something incredible. Travis is so damaged, but he’s still very likeable. Honestly, I just thought that Travis was a pretty amazing character. The odds are stacked against him and he’s dealing with so much. No matter how many times he said he wasn’t a good guy he always felt like a purely good person to me. There’s just something about him that I can’t put my finger on. Maybe it’s that he felt so real to me. I instantly liked him. Not because of his sense of humor or his semi bad boy ways, but just because he’s someone that I would want to hang out with in real life. I maybe wanted to fix him just a little too, but you can’t help that.

I haven’t read many other books that deal with war or PTSD and I found it all really interesting. I can’t imagine what that must be like but Doller did a excellent job bringing it to life in Something Like Normal. I urge you to read this book. It’s one of those that no matter what I say I’m never going to do it justice. So please, please read it. It’s a very fast and incredible read.

I did a post last week about why I moved to WordPress and my experience with it so far. I can tell you that my experience is definitely positive. I love WP and I couldn’t think of being back on Blogger now. My #1 reason for loving it so much is Plugins! That’s what this whole post is dedicated to.

If you’re wondering what a plugin is:

I’m going to start off with an explanation of what a plugin is. I think a lot of non-WP users aren’t clear on what they are. I couldn’t find a definition of Plugin that wasn’t super confusing so…here’s my definition:

A WordPress Plugin is basically something you download that extents the ability of your blog. You find a Plugin you want, you install it, and like magic it’s doing the work for you. The easiest thing that I can think to compare it to it Linkwithin for Blogger. Most of us use that and it’s the most comparable thing on Blogger. Except there are thousands of WP Plugins. Just about everything that you can imagine.

How does a Plugin work, you may be wondering? Well, it’s really simple. There’s a Plugins section on the dashboard. You go there and you search for the plugin you want or you can browse the popular ones. Once you’ve found what you want you click install. Then you have to activate it and depending on the Plugin sometimes you have to go to its settings and set it up how you want. The majority of them as really simple and make life so much easier.

If you’re still a little confused maybe this will help. Here’s a list of my favorite Plugins and what they do. Listing my Plugins was inspired by this awesome post at Miss Remmers Reviews.

The Must Haves:

• FD Feedburner — This one will redirect your feed links to your feedburner link. Which is very, very awesome.
• Broken Link Checker — After switching, lots of my links were broken and this nifty little Plugin will find those broken links and list them for you. It even checks your comments.
• Akismet — This is spam protection, so obviously it’s s must!
• WPtouch — Makes your blog mobile!
• Jetpack — This opens up many more options for widgets and such.

The Fun Stuff:

• All in One Favicon — Easily set a favicon for your blog and your dashboard!
• Share Buttons & the Pin It Plugin — Add the buttons to all of your posts in just a couple of steps.
• CommentLuv — You’ve all seen this right? This is the one that picks up on your feed when you comment and adds your newest post link in!
• Comment Reply Notification — This one will email your reply to the original commenter!
• Duplicate Post — This will set up a new draft for you using the same template as the original post. This is super helpful for posts that are the same or mostly the same every week. Like my Saturday Situation posts.
• Tweet Old Post — This will randomly tweet old post links for you. You do have to set it up to not post certain things, but I really love it!
• WordPress Editorial Calender — See all you posts in a calender format and drag and drop them to the days you want. I love this one!
• Thank You — I have this but I haven’t set it up yet. The first time someone comments on your blog it takes them to a special Thank You page that you set to say whatever you want.

The Plugins You Need:

• All on One Webmaster — This one is just awesomeness. You can add all of you stat tracking sites without having to add something to your coding. Like Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, Sitemeter etc.
• SEO by Yoast– I started out using this one, but now my StudioPress theme has SEO built in. This is a fantastic option for SEO.
• WordPress DB Manager — This one backs up your database on a schedule set by you and then emails it to you. It’s so, so important to have a backup!

Some of the SEO and Webmaster ones can me a little hard to set up, but I always just Google and find a tutorial. There’s endless ones! For the most, though, they are super easy to set up and make blogging so much easier.

It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

I’ve read two of Courtney Summers’ books. One I did not like at all and the other was just okay. I have a hard time with unlikeable characters and Summer’s books are filled with unlikeable characters. I kept hearing really great things about this one, plus it has zombies. So I decided to give it a try. It’s by far the best book I’ve read by this author.

This Is Not a Test starts out with a bang. The beginning left me reeling and it sets the solemn and dark tone for the rest of the story. Like many reviews have stated, this really isn’t a zombie book. They are kind of like this unrelenting background noise to the story. The main elements are the kids in the school, how they are dealing–or not dealing–with their own issues.

Sloan was a very damaged girl. I couldn’t relate to her, but I understood her position. I liked her. I can’t really say that about the other characters, except maybe Rhys. The constant fighting between some of the characters really grated on my nerves. That’s what kept from liking the book more than I did. It was understandable, I guess, but I couldn’t help being annoyed by it.

This is a dark book. It’s bleak and Courtney Summers doesn’t hold anything back. It’s a fast and intense read and I would recommend having something a little more light-hearted for after. Overall, it was good, but I can’t say that I loved it.

Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing, even though the girl he loves is inextricably connected with crime. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the Feds is smart, even though he’s been raised to believe the government is the enemy.

But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.

This has been such an imaginative and unique series. I’ve loved every page of it. I went into Black Heart sad that it was about to be over, but hoping that this final installment could live up to the first two. It definitely did.

Poor, poor Cassel. He’s always trying to do the right thing and he always gets the crap end of the deal. Things aren’t looking any better for him at the beginning of Black Heart. He has no idea who to trust, Lila won’t speak to him, and trouble just seems to find him. It seems pretty hopeless for Cassel but leave it to him to con everyone, including us readers, and get himself out of it. His growth since book one is fantastic and I love him even more now. He was a excellent character to root for.

I can’t say much about the plot for fear of all kinds of spoilers. Black Heart is just as much of a wild ride as the first two. I had no idea what direction the story was going to take and that was really fun. Oftentimes, the last book in a really great series is not everything you hoped it would be. Black Heart was. I can’t think of a better ending to such an extraordinary series. If you haven’t read these yet, you should! It’s on my favorites list for sure.

While I’m sad the trilogy is over, I’m so happy with how Cassel’s story ended. I just hope he stays out of trouble…

I’ve been on WP for 4 months now and I really wanted to take the time to let y’all know about my experience with it. Some of you may be thinking about making the move and I hope some of this might help you one way or another.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that lots of bloggers made the move to WordPress in the last few months. It all started with the treat that Blogger could delete your blog any time they wanted to, but for lots of bloggers, including myself, it was just time to make the switch. I’m going to try to explain my reasons and why people keep saying ‘WordPress is just better’.

Firstly, I think the .com vs .org thing confuses lots of people. I know I was confused at first. WordPress.com is a free blogging platform, like Blogger. WordPress.org is for self-hosted blogs. Meaning you have to have a hosting account and pay a yearly fee for your hosting. You then own your blog and have complete control over everything. In my humble opinion there’s no point in switching to WP unless you self host. Here’s why: WordPress.com is fantastic but it’s limited. There’s tons of fabulous options but there’s tons of fabulous options on Blogger. The big deal breaker for me is that WordPress.com doesn’t allow you to customize your design html easily and there’s no plugins on the .com site. Some might think that WordPress.com is still better than Blogger but I honestly don’t think it’s worth the hassle of switching. Self-hosting is definitely worth it.

So why switch?

• The SEO options are amazing. I’m still learning but I’m really in love with them. I know Blogger has SEO options now but I haven’t looked into it. I can’t imagine that it would be as extensive as some of the WP plugins.
• Plugins, plugins, plugins. When I switched I really didn’t comprehend the awesomeness that is plugins. It’s really became my most loved thing about WP. Imagine just downloading something that will do all the work for you. It’s incredible and if you have no other reasons for switching, plugins should be enough reason. Stay tuned next week for a post all about plugins!
• Design aspects. There’s so, so much more.

Why I switched:

• I’ve been blogging for 3.5 years and it was really just time to grow my blog in ways that Blogger wouldn’t allow.
• I wanted to learn how to do WP design….and for that I needed a WP site.

Really, that’s all. Looking back it was maybe a rash decision that just happened to work out very well. I couldn’t be more pleased with WP. It’s definitely not for everyone. If you’re more of a casual, post once or twice a week blogger than a free site is probably a better answer for you, but if you want to grow your blog and get nearly limitless options then you should look into self-hosting.

Often you open up the pages of a new book from a debut author and you have no idea what to expect. Sometimes debuts can be risky, right? You never know what your going to get. It might be a disappointment, it might only be okay, but every once in awhile you get this rare gem that just sweeps you right off your feet. That was Hourglass for me. What’s even more rare is a sequel that is just as good as the first book. Lots of them suffer from the Sequel Syndrome. Sequels are usually in between books, stepping stones to get to the next one or the last one. Rarely are they better than their predecessor. I’m going to stop this rambling now and just get to my point: I loved Hourglass. Love it. I LOVED Timepiece even more. I didn’t think it was possible to love it more but OMG I do.

Want to know why? Of course you do! There’s one reason: Kaleb Ballard. That is all. I’m pretty sure that I am in love with him. Seriously. It’s been quite awhile since I met a character that I loved this much. I didn’t really pay attention to him in Hourglass, except to hope that Emerson didn’t like him because I didn’t want it to turn into a love triangle. I don’t understand that now because how can you not pay attention to Kaleb freaking Ballard?! He’s so, so fascinating. He’s just the right amount of angsty that you want to hug him and slap him at the same time. He also likes to drink his problems away which gives him the sexy bad boy edge. Deep down, though, he really cares so much about everyone. He’s passionate and funny and sexy and can I have him…? I’m going to stop gushing about Kaleb now, but remember that he is incredible and nothing I can say will do him justice!

I was a little rusty on the details of Hourglass so it took me just a little while to remember what was going on. After that I could hardly put down the book. The pace moves very quickly and it was never predicable. I loved every second of it. It’s hard to say a lot without spoilers for the first book.

I must also mention the sexy times. They are aplenty and oh so good. I’m not going to mention who they are with since I haven’t seem it mentioned anywhere yet, but I love her! They are so great together. I was laughing out loud on several occasions. They were absolutely hot together. The chemistry is some of the best I’ve ever read.

This review has turned out to be very rambling and I apologize for that. Timepiece just brings it out in me, I guess. If you haven’t read Hourglass yet you should so very, very soon. These books are must reads. Myra McEntire has definitely cemented her spot on my favorite authors list.

OMG! I loved this book. It’s so full of twists and turns. It would make a great movie.

Jessi Kirby was a breakout last year among contemporary YA fans with Moonglass. Now I must say that she has done something that is hard to do: Followed it up with a book that is somehow even better than her first. I really enjoyed Moonglass, but I loved In Honor even more.

Somehow, the sadness of the story surprised me. I was thinking that the death of her brother had happened awhile before the story starts, but no, the book starts off with Honor at her brother’s funeral. It was so heartbreaking and I didn’t even know the characters yet. There’s something about Taps that just guts me. I don’t even have to hear it, apparently I can just read about it and be sad. In Honor had me emotional from page 1. I really liked that.

The story unfolds slowly as Honor and Rusty make their way across the desert so that Honor can fulfill her brother’s last wishes. Yes, this is a road trip book. Complete with classic rock–Tom Petty and Kansas! The story also has a depth that will surprise some readers. So much of it is about grief, but also about Honor growing up.

Rusty…sigh. You know he’s based off of Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights, right? And you know how much I love FNL and Tim Riggins, right? OMG, you guys. Tim Riggins…I might just repeat his name for the rest of the review…Rusty had the same bad boy/lady’s man attitude, he was a football star, and he liked to drink. Tim Riggins spot on. Really, he was amazing. I loved, loved, loved him. I’ll stop gushing now. All the little elements that reminded me of FNL only made the story better for me. (If you haven’t watched it yet, change that!)

There really isn’t a big romance story line, so don’t go into it expecting one. It doesn’t need romance to be good. I loved everything about the book. It’s filled with these beautiful moments of clarity for Honor, but it’s also so fun. It’s the perfect balance and I highly recommend it.
