Pressure vessel design and manufacture; The CEAL project

Here at Pure Ingenuity, our engineering staff is constantly expanding. Continuous improvement through off-site training courses has helped broaden our depth of knowledge in the manufacturing field so that we can stay in tune with our customers’ needs and expectations. Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of Pressure Vessel design and manufacture, an extremely complex and diligently regulated industry that requires a comprehensive knowledge of ASME, CSA and TSSA codes and practices. Fortunately, Pure Ingenuity is now entering our tenth year of designing, manufacturing, and repairing TSSA certified CRN registered pressure vessels, fittings and piping. We have TSSA certified welders and registered procedures for pressure welding of stainless steel, mild steel, and our latest upgrade, Hastelloy 256C (UNS-10276).

As Pure Ingenuity's resident TSSA expert and pressure vessel specialist, I'm available for all facets of consulting and design to facilitate your manufacturing needs, and would be glad to assist you at your convenience.

Steve Dean, MSc P.Eng.
On behalf of The Pure Ingenuity Team

Pressure Tactics

One of the more complex problems facing corporate engineers today is how to go about properly designing a tank/vessel that has to be able to withstand pressure and/or vacuum. The design process is often long and complicated and while software exists to aid engineers in their calculations, the $10,000 plus cost to purchase the software is not a viable alternative for every company. Another hurdle for engineers is obtaining Certification with the governing board of pressure vessels, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), which is required in order to design and/or manufacture these devices.

At Pure Ingenuity, we are certified to manufacture pressure and vacuum vessels, fittings, pressure and power piping. We are also able to repair and modify existing pressure vessels to suit our customers’ needs. Many vessels can be purchased on the Internet that are U-stamped and registered with the National Board, but are not registered with the appropriate Canadian association. Our in house expertise with pressure vessels means we can quickly and cost-effectively get your vessel re-registered for safe use north of the border.

Does your company have a problem that’s got you under pressure? Contact Pure Ingenuity for help.

Challenging Environment, Challenging Design

The new Challenging Environment Assessment Laboratory (CEAL), part of the Toronto Rehab Hospital in downtown Toronto, is now open after 4 years of planning and development. CEAL is the only facility of its kind in the world. Combining virtual reality with a state-of-the-art 6-degree-of-freedom motion platform, this massive underground lab features the world’s first hydraulic motion simulator that can mimic everyday environmental challenges faced by older people and those with disabling injury or illness.

Pure Ingenuity was contracted to design an access drawbridge for the lab, capable of bearing triple the normal OSHA recommended loading, with the ability to pivot out of the way of the motion platform`s displacement envelope. A lightweight aluminum design with hydraulic lift was envisioned, and built with a collapsible railing and canopy to maintain safety guidelines. Concept, design, solid modelling, fabrication drawings, manufacture, installation and controls were all part of the scope, which was completed and installed at the underground facility.

During the design phase, other projects came to the fore, including an aluminum staircase with adjustable ramp and force plates to study how falls on stairs happen, and what can be done to prevent them. Pure Ingenuity is proud to have met the engineering challenges presented by CEAL - an incredibly advanced project in the field of rehabilitative medicine, and one which has huge implications on the quality of life for elderly people and patients recovering from disability or illness.

Read here for more information about the CEAL project.

The new Trumpf 1030 laser; custom bakery belt conveyor solution

At Pure Ingenuity, we try to couple sound engineering design with the most productive fabrication techniques - which is why we are pleased to announce the arrival of our brand new Trumpf 1030 laser. This is an advanced machine with advanced software, able to cut 5’ x 10’ sheets of steel, stainless steel and aluminum with amazing accuracy and speed. The laser’s parts nesting capability minimizes scrap and cutting time, enhancing productivity while reducing costs. This new capability will help us to shorten lead times, improve product fit and finish and deliver superior results for you.

Matt Kicul
On behalf of The Pure Ingenuity Team

Working at the speed of light

With higher accuracy and lower cutting costs than plasma or water-jet, the Trumpf 1030 laser is an incredibly fast and accurate machine for cutting a variety of materials in a wide range of thicknesses. In the past, we often sent work out to be laser cut, which meant we could be waiting days for a part to be returned. With the addition of our own laser we’ve cut that waiting time from days to hours. We can now cut a prototype, test it, revise it if necessary, and use it in production – all in the same day. Whether it’s a straight-forward or complex piece, we can cut it all in a fraction of the time it takes using traditional methods.

The best way to leverage the productivity gains attained with laser cutting is to incorporate them during the product design stage. Slots and notches added to sheet metal parts, during the design stage can act as assembly jigs which improve accuracy and reduce build time. Accurate fit up means welding is more precise so the part is less distorted and the finishing time is reduced. We will be showing examples of this technique in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime contact Matt Kicul to discuss the advantages of laser cutting in your next project.

Show me the...dough

A large Toronto baked goods and frozen dough facility needed to transfer a 30” wide web of dough from one production line to another.

The lines were travelling in the same direction, but were located 14’ apart. The solution was to flip the dough up over a 45 degree nose-bar onto a set of stepped belts to turn it 90 degrees, pass it over a belt conveyor to cover most of the span and then drop it over another 45 degree conveyor to turn it back on its way.

Using our experience and expertise designing food handling machinery, and our customer’s conceptual layout we designed two 45 deg. belts and a fabric belt to fit between the existing lines. The two 45s were designed to bolt on to the side frames of the existing lines while the fabric belt was put on casters and crafted with a folding nose bar to allow for easy removal and cleaning.

Capitalizing on the talents of our experienced fabricators, we were able to cut, form, weld and assemble stainless steel conveyor bodies, frames, scrapers, pans and trays. Many high tolerance, machined parts were produced by our highly skilled machinists to create the stepped, multi-belt design of the 45 degree conveyors. The result was that our customer attained production flexibility saving them time and money.

Skills used in this project:

Solid modelling and mechanical engineering

Design for food contact

Sheet metal fabrication

Sanitary welding and finishing

Precision CNC machining

Sudbury Neutrino Observatory; New Equipment

Pure Ingenuity has been a leader in innovative design and fabrication for over 41 years. Our approach is to gain a thorough understanding of your design challenges and to consistently give you elegant, unique solutions. From specialized food processing and pharmaceutical equipment to film sets and experimental apparatus for education and research, our team of professional engineers and fabricators is both highly skilled and highly creative.

Our newsletter highlights new projects and manufacturing technology we have been working on recently. We hope you will find some interesting snippets of Pure Ingenuity that may help with solving equipment challenges in your business.

Richard Ward P.Eng.
On behalf of The Pure Ingenuity Team

Hitting new lows with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

Our engineers and fabricators have been busy designing and building a rotating aluminum access platform for SNOLAB. SNOLAB is an underground science laboratory specializing in neutrino and dark matter physics. The detectors used in the lab are very sensitive to the slight amounts of radioactivity found in mine dust. Even though the laboratory is operated as a clean room it is still necessary to periodically clean minute amounts of radioactive material from the detector vessel. The finished structure will be used to allow technicians access to clean the inside surface of the neutrino detector vessel located 6800’ below surface level in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury Ontario.

A project of this magnitude presents some unique design challenges. We needed to create access to the top hemisphere of a 40’ diameter acrylic vessel through a 20’ long narrow neck complete with a rotating carriage that would allow the structure to be rotated 360 degrees without touching the vessel. To eliminate any danger for the employees working on an elevated platform deep within the mine, the structural aluminum weldment design also had to satisfy all health and safety requirements.

Adding a bit more complexity to the project, all the sections of the equipment had to be designed small enough to be transported through a working nickel mine, they needed to be easy to assemble while hanging in the acrylic vessel and they needed to be easily cleanable to allow their use in a Class 2000 clean room environment. The results of the research at SNOLAB will help answer critical questions about the Universe and the nature of matter. Pure Ingenuity is thrilled to be able to contribute to this exciting experiment and we are always looking for new opportunities to apply these design and fabrication skills to other industries.

Contact us today to learn more about what we can do for you and your business.

Skills used in this project:

Mechanical/Structural Engineering

3D Modelling

Aluminum welding design

High accuracy modular fixturing

CNC machining

Welding to CSA standards

Coming soon...

Laser cutting leads to productivity explosion. Stay tuned for our feature story on our adventures with our new laser cutting machinery.

New Equipment, Even Greater Accuracy

As part of our mission to exceed client expectations, we are expanding our team and investing in new tools and software. Our new modular fixturing system – the same one used to create the structure for SNO – allows us to fabricate complicated parts with incredible accuracy. This system gives us the capability to build three dimensional welding fixtures accurate to .001”/ft. We can now fixture complicated piping, sheet metal and structural frames more quickly and accurately than ever before. There will be more to come about this new capability in the next few months.
