Today’s Nintendo Direct was jam-packed with some very exciting announcements. So many, in fact, that some pretty big games got buried. One such game was KOEI TECMO’s Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories. Another was the immediate release of the Switch 2 upgrade pack for Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land.

We’ll look at the latter first. On sale until June 22 for only $5.70, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for last year’s Atelier Yumia offers:

Improved resolution and framerate

Shorter loading times

New local GameShare functionality (while playing with another player using GameShare, you will be able to switch between the roles of main player and support as you battle and explore)

The Atelier Yumia – Backpack Set that allows players to change the color of Yumia’s backpack and Flammi’s smoke.

Of course, a full Switch 2 version is now available as well, and is also on sale for $39.89 until the 22nd.

In my review of Atelier Yumia, I applauded the game’s scope and open-world approach, but lamented the growing pains that came with them. Hopefully the Switch 2-optimized version addresses some of them.

Either way, it’ll give Atelier fans something to do while waiting for the early 2027 release of Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories. We don’t know much about the game yet, but details will be released this Friday. Until then, here’s the full announcement trailer…complete with a compelling (if not totally unexpected) cameo.

Square Enix has announced the long-awaited name and release window of its third and final instalment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Final Fantasy VII: Revelation will release in spring 2027 on the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside other consoles.

A new reveal trailer introduces us to the story, along with the characters tasked with saving the world. It looks like an epic conclusion to the series. You can check out the first two entries on the Switch 2 right now, with the second game, Rebirth, debuting just this week.

Reveal trailer

In Revelation, Cloud Strife and his loyal companions are facing a world on the brink of annihilation. It’s dire times. The team is grieving a beloved ally, and their nemesis Sephiroth has assumed a role that’s nearly god-like. The party takes to the skies aboard the airship Highwind, racing against time to stop the ultimate destructive magic. Revelation is set to deliver a breathtaking finale to one of the most ambitious projects in video game history. In some ways, it serves as the culmination of 30 years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling. Talk about a long legacy.

The Revelation world has no boundaries, with a freely explorable planet. Players can drop in via parachute anywhere, easily transitioning from air to land. There are many conflicts to cover, so the party will need to divide and conquer. You can choose where to go, who to help and the order of events. Combat can also be customized by switching between real-time action and a hybrid battle system, which has been expanded and perfected with new playable characters and powerful new abilities.

Square Enix also revealed a more detailed gameplay trailer, which you can check out below.

Gameplay introduction trailer

According to Square Enix, if you’re playing one or both of the first two games, your save data will unlock special bonuses in Revelation:

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade:

Summon Materia: Chocobo & Moogle

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth:

Summon Materia: Phoenix

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will hit the Nintendo Switch 2 and other consoles in Spring 2027. Let us know if you’re excited to be picking this up when it releases, and if you’re enjoying the first two games on Switch 2.

Square Enix sent some quotes through with its press release, which reveal the excitement and dedication of the team. Check these out below.

“FINAL FANTASY VII, first released in 1997, has been beloved by fans for many years and has since become a “legend” in its own right. The FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series that began in 2020 with everyone’s passionate support is finally reaching its climactic finale with FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION. The story’s final destination represents my emotions spanning thirty years working on this title; and yet, as the developer, our hands alone cannot turn its final page. It’s only when you, the player, step inside and memorialize this journey that a new “legend” is finally born. We hope you witness the coming together of our hearts, and yours.” – Yoshinori Kitase, Producer

“I’m beyond excited to announce FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, launching simultaneously across all platforms in Spring 2027. I’m truly grateful to our fans who believed in this story and supported us for so many years. In this title, centered around “resolve,” Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet’s fate. All the stories and emotions accumulated over the years will culminate in the most satisfying way with this experience, brought to you as the series’ final chapter. Please look forward to it.” – Naoki Hamaguchi, Director

“As creators, we have carefully built and nurtured the FINAL FANTASY VII series over many years, expanding it through numerous spin-off titles along the way. Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these FINAL FANTASY VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the Remake Series. While there may be a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we are confident that this journey will remain an unforgettable experience for years to come. Thank you sincerely for joining us and being part of this journey over so many years.” – Tetsuya Nomura, Creative Director

This week’s eShop roundup brings us the second Final Fantasy VII reimagining, Rebirth, along with classic DK, eFootball, new ways to listen to Nintendo Music, and more. Let’s dive in.

First up is the second of the three-part Final Fantasy VII remakes: Rebirth. This glorious-looking adventure takes us back into the world of Cloud and Sephiroth as we discover more about Sephiroth’s plans to take over the world. And, we just heard as part of the recent Summer Game Fest that the third instalment now has a name and release window! We’re excited to hear that Revelation will hit the Switch 2 alongside other consoles in spring 2027.

Meanwhile, back to this week, and Donkey Kong 64’s first 3D outing is now available on Switch Online Classics. Donkey Kong 64 originally hit the Nintendo 64 way back in 1999. This collectathon was developed by Rare, and heralded the N64’s Expansion Pack at the time. incidentally, it was a long time before DK got to strut his stuff in 3D again, with last year’s Donkey Kong Bananza taking us all pleasantly by surprise.

eFootball Kick-Off is another highlight of the week, bringing the passion and thrills of soccer to the Switch 2. You can play solo or with friends, offline or online, with your own club team, participate in competitions around the globe or take on International Cup. There’s a six-a-side mode, rank Newer players can also get in on the action with “six-a-side” matches that create plenty of goal-scoring opportunities, and a Rank-based system where your performance is evaluated as you learn the skills needed to win matches. eFootball Kick-Off! is available now on Nintendo Switch 2.

There’s also new music to enjoy, and Nintendo Music can now be played on more devices. This means you can stream Nintendo tunes from your car, phone, or web browser. Nice!

There’s a long list of games to peruse, so check them out below and let us know what you’ll be playing this weekend.

I think I have a better understanding now of what Hocotate is like from the point of view of the Pikmin, at least before Captain Olimar crashed there. Smalland: Survive the Wilds tasks players with helping a race of tiny creatures navigate life on a hostile planet, only no aliens arrive to throw them at enemies.

In Smalland, you’re part of a race of people called Smallfolk. You’ve been living underground to remain safe from the giants, but the giants are now gone. So, it’s time to head back up and colonize the Overworld. Weird that these people name everything, including themselves, based on their current status within their surroundings, but they can correct that once the hard work’s done.

After a quick character creation, the game begins with your party scattered after an attack. You’re on your own with only basic armor and no weapon, so you have to get to work immediately. Thankfully, a helpful map and some gentle prods will get you moving in the right direction. That doesn’t mean things are easy, though. After being prompted to craft initial items, I decided to take on an ant to get some of the materials I needed. One of the first insects you meet in the game, it can’t be hard to kill, right? Wrong.

This brings me to one of the first things I really enjoyed about the game. Although you lose your items when you die, they remain at the location where you died. Just head back there after respawning, and you can pick up your goods. Then, focus on what you’re supposed to be doing: collecting and crafting. These really are the core mechanics of the game, as Smalland tasks you with keeping yourself fed, armed, protected, and rested.

Harvesting materials and crafting them into better items is obviously the key to progression for both yourself and your colony. Fighting is just something you do along the way…although you’ll be doing quite a bit of it.

Combat is fairly basic—attack, dodge, block—but it’s still challenging. Even lesser enemies (steer clear if you suffer from entomophobia) can be troublesome throughout, especially if they attack you en masse. Battle skills will only get you so far, so it’s very important to be properly equipped. Once you do start winning, however, you can also tame your enemies and use them to your advantage. Scorpions may be scary to fight, but they’re quite fun to ride, it ends up.

Building a base gives you the ability to sleep safely, store materials you’ve collected, and put those materials to use. You need to stay fed in order to keep your stamina up. You need to keep your stamina up in order to fight off threats. That, then, becomes the gameplay loop; head out from base to explore the area, gather and conquer what you can, head back with your materials to level up, then head out further in the morning…with the hopes that a nasty weather event doesn’t wipe it all out in the meantime.

Smalland: Survive the Wilds relies on a few different features to keep this interesting, at varying degrees of success. First is the joy of exploration. That works because the game looks great on the Switch 2 and has some very interesting elements and areas to dig into. There’s a lot to uncover: often pretty, occasionally scary. This element is the main draw, and it really works; the game constantly rewards your curiosity, especially once you acquire the ability to fly through it.

That’s good, because the second element, the narrative, is lacking. You will meet and interact with NPCs, but they’re mostly there just to teach you how to play the game and to give you quests. A survival game that relies on exploration and base-building for its core gameplay doesn’t need an in-depth story, sure, but there should be something more than lore-building to propel you forward, especially if you’re playing alone.

That takes us to element three: co-op gameplay. Smalland practically screams for you and up to nine of your friends to reclaim the Overworld together. You can hop in and out of servers, base in hand, but the best way to experience multiplayer is to work with the same team from the start. However, if the player who set up the server isn’t online, you can’t get into your particular Overworld. You can play elsewhere or in single player mode, of course, but what you do there won’t affect your progress with your friends. As such, Smalland will mostly be relegated to a single-player journey for the majority of players.

That’ll be enough for survival fans; there’s no shortage of content here to keep genre-enthusiasts enthused for a considerable amount of time. And it being on Switch 2, they can take it with them, too (although I also recommend some reading glasses; the folks aren’t the only things that are small). It’s not likely, however, that the exploration/crafting/base-building loop will be enough to compel action-adventurer players to set out on a regular basis.

Mina the Hollower is the latest outing from Yacht Club Games. If you’re not familiar with that name, you’ll likely recognise the title of their hugely popular game: Shovel Knight. This NES-style platformer quickly became an indie darling, setting a high benchmark for retro games on modern consoles. The team’s long-awaited follow-up adventure, Mina the Hollower, continues this trend, this time with a top-down style coupled with that same retro charm.

The story follows a brave mouse named Mina. As a member of the Hollower’s Guild, Mina travels to meet her friend, Baron Lionel, to investigate an issue with the island’s spark generators. When her ship is attacked by a giant sea monster, Mina’s vessel crashes. This is where her journey truly begins.

This setup was all part of the demo, originally released in 2025. If you played through it at the time, I highly recommend restarting the game. While the full version neatly picks up where you left off, I was completely lost in terms of the story and how to play.

First things first: Mina needs to choose her weapon. There are three on offer, each with a very cool name: Whisper and Vesper (a pair of nimble daggers), Mightstar (a crushing mace, affixed to a flexible chain), and Blastrike Maul (a hammer with explosive force). You can test them all out before making your choice. While it seems like a definitive decision, you will eventually unlock all three. There are others to discover, too.

From here, it’s time to roam the world, slaying enemies and solving puzzles. This initial journey (again, part of the demo) is relatively linear until you reach Lionel and the safety of a town. This serves as your hub from which you can explore six “levels” in any order you like. There are places like Eastern Heath, Western Wilds, and Backwaters to discover, each filled with enemies, quirky NPCs, and hidden secrets. These creative areas provide plenty of variety to keep exploration feeling fun and fresh no matter where you choose to go next.

Gameplay is from a top-down perspective akin to classic Zelda titles. You’ll hear that comparison being thrown around a lot, and it’s apt for the most part. Mina moves and attacks in four directions. The battles are action-based. You even have a secondary weapon. But there are a few distinct differences.

To start with, Mina also has a special ability up her sleeve. You might have been wondering what a “hollower” is from the title? Put simply, it’s the ability to tunnel. Mina can perform this move on most surfaces, digging a hole and moving underground for a few seconds before popping back out. It’s a fun mechanic that opens new ways to play. You can tunnel beneath certain obstacles that would normally be uncrossable. You can duck underground to avoid enemies. You can also use this move to collect items buried below the surface.

The main items you’ll seek are bones. These serve as in-game currency, allowing you to purchase upgrades and items. Leveling up this way is critical, allowing you to push further into the game and take on harder enemies. You can “save” your accumulated bones at certain points, which is useful because death typically means losing all collected bones at that point.

One of the downsides to Mina is the lack of an in-game map—at least, by default. You can discover a map by completing a specific quest, but it’s not obvious or easy. Plus, with an open-world style that allows you to complete most of the game in any order, you may not discover it until closer to the end. Even then, completing this quest only unlocks the ability to purchase a map. That map is very simple, with another version purchasable for even more bones. You won’t always need a map, and I’m sure it was a deliberate omission, but it does feel like an odd choice to keep it so hidden.

The other negative (though this is going to be more of a personal preference) is the game’s high difficulty. Mina the Hollower is a tough game. If you fondly remember your time with the original Legend of Zelda game, be warned that, despite the visual similarities and obvious inspiration, it’s a different outing. That’s not a bad thing in itself, but just be prepared for a tough ride, especially at the beginning. When you have no trinkets and you haven’t levelled up yet, even early enemies are quite hard. I’m looking at you, flying-and-diving owl.

When you start playing, there are no difficulty modes to choose from. To compensate for this, there are plenty of modifiers to fiddle with. You can toggle 30 such settings, from increasing or decreasing Mina’s defence to creating save points before each boss fight. This is a great addition that helps players cope with some of the game’s toughness. You can also change how healing works.

I’m going to mention healing as part of the difficulty factor because it’s not obvious how it works. Well, not unless you’re familiar with the likes of Dark Souls (which I’m not). In Mina the Hollower, it pays to be aggressive. You take damage from enemies; that’s obviously fine. Your red health meter depletes. But every hit you make earns you plasma, building up a yellow meter where your health was previously lost. Once your plasma is built up, you can consume a healing vial to turn it into usable red health.

As someone who isn’t familiar with this system, it was completely foreign to me. This doesn’t make it bad, but it wasn’t clearly explained. Personally, I prefer the simplicity of regaining health by consuming hearts or red potions. And this is why it’s hard to fault as a negative; once you know, you know. Yet it would have been great to have that explained. Also, there are times when this system fails. If you repeatedly fall off cliffs or perilous platforms and there are no enemies around, you can’t rebuild your health. I found this to be a frustrating experience.

None of that makes me dislike the game, though. There’s an obvious attention to detail and a strong dedication to making something high quality. This is evident in the sheer number of screens on offer. Mina traverses the world screen by screen, just like the original Zelda outing. There are over 1,200 handcrafted screens to discover. Let that number sink in, and you’ll have an idea of how big this game is and why it takes a good 20-30 hours to work through.

Another nice touch is Mina’s ability to equip a trinket to improve her chances of surviving this treacherous world. There are over 60 to collect; some purchasable from vendors, others discovered by helping NPCs, and some from defeating specific enemies. You can initially only equip one trinket, though a trinket bag will grant the ability to equip more. Handy!

I’ve saved the best aspect for last, though: the design. Graphically, Mina the Hollower looks simply fantastic. It sports an obvious retro style that’s charming in itself. It also adds so much detail and color that it’s like an NES or Gameboy Color game if those systems were made in 2026. Yacht Club Games knows how to make an adventure that looks both old and new at the same time, and I love it. Well done, team.

Featuring a cute (but creepy) 2D pixel style, KEMCO’s Decollate Decoration is a horror visual novel with point-and-click gameplay that you can complete in about 15 minutes per run. The basis is that you’re a girl who has just died but finds herself unable to move on to the afterlife without the boy she loves. So, she makes the completely logical and totally unselfish decision of finding a way to take him with her.

You have 49 days to do this, with each choice taking up a week’s worth of your time. Because you’re a ghost, it’s not easy to get your love’s attention. You can try talking to him, visiting his dreams, cursing him, or using your poltergeist abilities to catch his attention. Different choices in different orders create different outcomes. There are six endings you can get from this game, and with each playthrough lasting about 15 minutes, you can get a decent couple of hours of game play.

Decollate Decoration starts how most games often end: with a black screen and a big ol’ “YOU DIED.” You then find yourself at your lover’s apartment, unable to talk to him or get him to notice you.

You can interact with a few objects, but each really just provides explanations to what they are or how your partner lives. Each week, the dialogue provided by interacting with these objects changes, offering more insight, such as his relationship with his mother, his relationship with school and friends, and his relationship with the ghost girl before her death.

You also have four possible ways to interact with him. Talking to him is an option that doesn’t exactly work at first, as he can’t hear or see you. Poltergeist creates disturbances nearby to catch your love’s attention. Dream causes you to enter his dreams and communicate with him in that way. And Curse allows you to curse him in the hopes of getting his attention.

Because you only have 49 days to complete your task—and each action takes up a week’s worth of time—you only have 7 chances to take action. It’s which actions you choose and in which order that affect your ending. There are hints within the game to help you reach the best ending, but at the end of the day it’s only based on the order of your choices.

As you get further into the game, you’ll notice your character’s love for her boyfriend turn into obsession. This is where the horror elements come in. There isn’t much gore or any jump scares. Instead, the game focuses on emotion and reveals little at a time. It creates this eerie and unsettling atmosphere that reminded me a bit of games like Doki Doki Literature Club.

The 2D pixel style, the music, and the character design all work well together and are what ultimately make the game. Since there isn’t much strategy or action to Decollate Locations, the environment is what makes it feel refreshing and fun. Also, due to the lack of gameplay elements, the controls are super easy.

Decollate Decoration takes an age old trope—obsessed girlfriend—and turns it into an adorably sinister horror story. It may be too short and simple for most, but it does keep players on their toes.
