But, we realized that we needed help. We couldn’t get to the next level…where we wanted to go….by ourselves.

We hired a personal trainer recently Holly Renfro at our local YMCA.

We watched Holly work with other clients. She was not only relational and positive with her clients…but she really helped people get results. We watched from a distance for a few weeks…then decided to hire her.

When used correctly each of the sites can effectively help spread the word you are in need of work.

Facebook

Although Facebook is primarily a personal social site it can be an effective networking tool when utilized correctly. Facebook groups is a feature that allows users to connect around a common topic or interest, and there are groups for almost any topic one can think of. To find the right group, search for topics that coincide with your career interests, or are inspirational or motivational to you. Groups based on these topics are where you will find the right contacts to network with. Remember, when you are networking that you should present yourself professionally. Utilize the privacy settings to keep your social life separate from your professional account.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a directory of professionals and companies for individuals to use for networking, job searching, hiring, company research, and making connections. Consider your LinkedIn profile to be your resume. Make sure it is fully complete and detail it with information on your skills and experiences. Setup many connections and be sure to reach out to each when you post that you are job searching. Remember there are jobs posted directly to LinkedIn, so this may also be a good way to begin your job hunt.

Twitter

Twitter may seem an unlikely place to land a job, but in today’s tech savvy world it could be just the tool you need. With Twitter not only can you post that you are job searching, but you can ‘follow’ accounts of companies that interest you. Once you tweet your skills and the position you want you can request your followers re-tweet in your best interest.

The most important thing to remember when networking, especially online, is to remain active. Stay connected with your contacts even when you aren’t in need of them.

Do you know the best way to get your name out there? Network, network, network.
But who should you network with? Everyone around you, family, friends, neighbors, former bosses, and co-workers, as well as competitors of previous jobs.

You can network anywhere, but the best places are those intended for such interactions.

Job fairs

Open houses

Social groups, such as Lion’s club, Rotary club, churches; practically anywhere that people gather.

Employment agencies that assist job seekers with their job search.

Head hunters, also known as recruiters or search consultants, are individuals that work as the job seekers representative. One major difference between an employment agency and a headhunter is the headhunter will match you with potential employers based on your skill and interests versus just placing you in any field with an opening.

Also, don’t forget your college/university alumni association. Many host networking groups and events.

Tips for effective networking:

Start with your contact list.

If you are setting up a meeting over the phone tell the contact you want their advice on career planning; this will more likely get a ‘yes’ to your intended meeting than saying you need help finding a job would.

Let them know you only want a few minutes of their time; 15-20 minutes.

Plan ahead so you don’t waste time. Have a clear and well-thought out plan of what you will say when you come in contact with these people. Let them know you are looking for leads to jobs, as well as what field you are interested in.

Stay Tuned for the Next Part

I know that you probably do too.

Some fears are legitimate…they really are. But most of what we fear never happens.

Here’s some fears that people have when changing jobs:

*My benefits won’t be as good at the next job
*They won’t hire me if I try to negotiate for more money/benefits after an interview
*If I start asking my network for ‘leads’ for new jobs, my current boss will find out

Truth be told, most of things things are completely false. Here’s some examples from my own work life:

*I’ve changed jobs/roles several times…and each time, I’ve moved to better benefits and salary
*I’ve negotiated for better pay and benefits, every single time I’ve taken a new job – and there was still no hesitation for the company to hire me
*When I’ve connected with my own personal network for job leads, most people help. Because many of them have asked me for help as well.

Face your fears as you seek a new job. Some of those fears may be legit. Many are not. But face them…and don’t use them as an excuse to not move forward.

Questions are a good thing. You learn. You get more information so that you can move forward.

You might ask lots of questions too.

But…why do you?

Is it to learn, then move forward? Or…is it to just pile up information….then do nothing.

Sometimes, we can ‘hide’ behind questions. We can ‘hide’ behind what appears to be action…even when it’s not.

What’s the root of your questions? Are you going to do something with the information you receive? Or…are you hiding behind those questions???

Keep asking questions. But make sure and act on your knew knowledge – that will keep you moving forward.

Ever get in a situation where your work values are compromised?

It happened to me this week.

We were hosting clients on a fishing trip in South Dakota. We had hired guides that came highly recommended. 10 minutes after meeting them, the leader pulls out a Playboy magazine and opens it right in front of everyone.

How would you handle a situation like this? (Tune in to hear how I handled it )

How about you? What changes have you been making in your life recently? What were the results of those changes?

Tips for a successful interview

Part 2: During the interview

After you have filled out applications and handed in resumes, you still have to ace the interview before the job is yours. Here are some tips to help you succeed in landing your next job.

1) Be prepared. Anticipate questions your interviewer may ask so that you can think of creative or proper ways to answer. Being prepared is key. An interviewer can tell if you are ‘winging’ it.

2) Give a firm handshake and smile. Nobody wants to hire a wimpy, grouchy person

3) Make and keep eye contact. This doesn’t mean stare all the time…it means make regular eye contact throughout the interview when it feels appropriate to you.

4) Take a few notes. You’ll appear more interested in the company and the position.

5) Ask questions. Keep questions short and focus on the position you are applying for. Have at least 2 questions to ask, or you may appear uninterested or disengaged.

There are also a few things to avoid during an interview.

1) Don’t speak too much about your personal life. Some personal stories are ok, but don’t share your entire life story

2) Don’t be ‘stiff’ in your interview. Sit comfortably and relaxed. Be attentive, but not ‘stiff’.

3) Give answers to the questions asked and speak on what you know. If you are making stuff up in your answers, it’s easy to identify.

Lastly, remember to conduct a follow-up, but be mindful of any instructions the interviewer gave for a follow-up. Most interviewees don’t do any follow up, so you’ll stand out if you do this.

Show up to the interview well prepared and you can relax knowing you showed your best. This will set you apart from other candidates….

Part 1: Preparation

Interviews are sometimes an intimidating aspect of the job search process. Preparing yourself by following these common sense tips can lessen the stress.

1 – Research the company. Go into the interview armed with the knowledge of the company’s motto, what services and products they offer, and even background information such as the company’s history. If you know the name of the person conducting your interview do a search on them as well. Utilize the internet to get up-to-date, as well as past information on your potential employer.

2 – Do a mock interview. Have someone go through the interview process with you. This person should ask potential questions and you should provide full answers. Also have them give you feedback on how they think you answered and on your behavior. If you video tape the mock interview, it can be a real ‘eye opener’ for you as you focus in on how to make improvements.

3 – Practice. Think of a few obvious and not so obvious questions that could be asked and practice answering them in a mirror. Make eye contact with yourself and practice facial expressions. Yes, it sounds silly…but it’s effective.

4 – Appearance. Choose your outfit ahead of time. Be sure the shoes and clothes fit properly, are comfortable, and not too revealing. Check that all buttons are in place, zippers work correctly, and colors match. Make sure you are showered and well-groomed. These are basic things…but you don’t want to have to put mental energy into these on the day of the interview.

5 – Be Organized. Print extra copies of resume and cover letter to bring with you. Have a list of references on hand.

6 – Be Punctual. Be on time. If you show up late your chances of getting the job are very slim, regardless of how the interview goes. Failing to arrive on time puts doubts in the employer’s mind about how serious you are about wanting the job.

Preparation plays a large role in having a successful interview. Remember when you are prepared you are more confident. With just a little preparation…you can greatly increase your chances of getting the job you want.

She had great technical experience. But…she’d left her field to focus on raising her kids. She’d worked part-time at a Chamber of Commerce.

She wanted something new. She wanted to move into something that combined her engineering background and her marketing experience at the chamber.

But wait a minute…she asked for help in a DOWN ECONOMY? You can’t find a good job in this economy, right?

Wrong.

She’s now the Director of Business Development for a company in the region…combining her skills and passions. And…she’s making more money than she’s ever made.

What made her different? How did she find any job…no less a good job in this economy?

She was motivated. She believed in herself. She did her due diligence. She was persistent.

You can do the same. Don’t use the economy as an excuse anymore….

Are you tired of working a job that you view as a “dead end”?

Then it’s about time you decide what you ultimately want out of a job. For success and happiness at work you should be giving your time and talents to a company that fits your values.

But….before you can search for a job that fits your values, you must know what your values are and what they mean to you.

Take some time to really think about what’s important in your life.

What are your top priorities? With these ideas in mind make a list of five to ten words that describe your values.

Keep in mind that if you are a money and power driven person then you may not want to work for charities. Or, if you’re heart bleeds for children (yours or others ), don’t work for an organization that doesn’t allow you time flexibility to serve your family.

Next, write a description of these words, detailing what each means to you.

Study them to see if you can find a relationship among them or possibly place them into two groups with a related theme. Be specific with your words or phrases. Pick items that truly agree with who you are and how you see yourself. Avoid choosing jobs that others say would be a good pick for you, unless you know and trust these people.

For help with finding values that are meaningful to you check out our Online Career Coach free sample on Values here.

From there, start researching the companies you find of interest.

Read company mission statements to see if their goals line up with your own. Speak with current and past employees to ask their opinions of whether or not the company lives up to the standards that they claim. Do not be shy because you are looking for a good fit for yourself. Doing your due diligence here will pay dividends later.

You might find it beneficial to get the aid of a life or career coach to help you better define your values and narrow your search.

Remember it can take time for what you are most passionate about to grow in the workplace. But, if a company’s values don’t match yours…….any passion for your work will fizzle over time.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 147 – Something New – Pursuing Your Calling

The reason why we’re doing this podcast is to discuss this whole idea of calling. Calling is one of the biggest passions in life. How does our calling affect everything that we do? What does it mean to have a unique calling?

We’re going to be discussing “calling” further at pursuingyourcalling.com. We’ll be having guests who will tell us how they found their calling and how much different their lives are from when they were doing something else that isn’t their calling. We’d love to hear your feedback or review on iTunes for this brand new podcast!

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 145 – New Skills for Jeff and Cindy – How About You?

Today I will be sharing some sort of a personal story. It’s about our two virtual assistants Jeffrey and Cindy. Both of them are learning new skills. For Jeffrey, new skills as he moves on to a career that is a better fit for him and for Cindy, new skills as she is being trained to take over Jeffrey’s tasks.

Sometimes, as we continue to live our lives, we may feel trapped in the job that we have. We are however stopped from moving on to something better in the belief that we do not possess the skills needed for the new endeavor that we want. Learning new skills is never easy but we shouldn’t make excuses to what could really make us happy in our career. Are you ready to take on some new skills?

It’s something that almost everyone wants. We’d all like to make more money than we do. Some folks can find higher paying jobs. But…how?

The answer is simple: Know what you are worth.

What unique skills do you bring? What past job performance can you prove? What does the particular type of position you are applying for usually pay?

Glassdoor.com is a great source of salary information.

Simply go to their website and click on the salary menu. You’ll be surprised what you can find there. A quick browse will give you insights on the millions of jobs available. Salaries for the position that you are applying for – not only in your city, but all across the world.

You can also compare salaries between specific companies. Or, you can compare positions that are slightly different in responsibilities.

The next time you are seeking a different job, know what you are worth. Do your due diligence at Glassdoor.com. Then…you’ll know what your salary should be.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 142 – Biggest Obstacles to Getting Out of Debt

Gregg Pechmann is our co-host on this podcast episode.

Our topic is the biggest obstacles to getting out of debt.

Gregg has a new book, Upside Down, How We Survived Seven Short Sales. It describes the short sales process in the real estate industry and how we bounced back from 7 short sales in the past.

The first step is the mindset of wanting to be debt-free, less than 5% of people save in this country. They put credit and debt up there with oxygen, and water. We’re called to be better stewards of money.

The second step is change your behavior.

The third step is to take action. Take the budget that God has given us.

You have to be intense and very motivated to pay off the debt. Are you willing to do the hard work to accomplish this?

Having funds in the bank is more important than the debt. Make sure you have 6-12 months of emergency funds set up.

You shouldn’t just send your resume to any company that has an opening. In order to be an appealing applicant you should conduct research on companies that are interesting to you. The company you are planning to work should be able to use your experience and skills. And…it should be a good fit for your values as well.

You should know something about the founders of the company. You should know something about the company’s financial status. You should know if the people that work there are happy with their jobs. In other words, you must do your ‘due diligence.’

You should always be ‘armed’ with this good research before going for an interview. But – where do you go for this information? How can you get this detailed information about the companies you might want to work for?

There are lots of good resources that you should explore:

GlassDoor.com is a great place to start. Here, you can get detailed information about the company that you are most interested in. Employee satisfaction, salary ranges for your position, tips for preparing for an interview. It can all be found at GlassDoor.Com.

Don’t forget about using your own personal network in this process as well. Many people don’t realize just how many connections they have until they start making contacts about possible jobs. You may know someone who works for the company that you want to work for. A personal connection is always the best way to learn about a company.

LinkedIn is also a great source of information in today’s world. Linkedln Job has thousands of job postings. You can find the perfect opportunity for you by searching keywords, title, company and location. Linkedln gives you the option to create your own profile where you can keep constantly updating the same. And…it’s likely that you are ‘connected’ on LinkedIn with someone who works for the company that you want to work for.

Do your due diligence. You’ll find the right company to work for.

I went to a local restaurant in the city of Dayton for breakfast and a chance to catch up on some reading for school. I work part time, and I go to school full time so it can be challenging to find time to get my reading completed. Call me crazy, but I generally try to complete the assigned readings since it helps me to learn the material. We have an infant in the house now, so reading at home can be quite a challenge. I’ve started getting breakfast out once a week or every other week at a minimum to give me a chance to focus on schoolwork alone.

I have been to this restaurant for breakfast several times. Their food is always quite good, they serve great coffee that stays hot, and their service is excellent. Several others places in the area serve good breakfast, but the prices can really vary. This place has great before 9:00 specials which save me several dollars. I can end up paying almost twice as much for the same menu items elsewhere. What’s more, I really like their blend of coffee. That probably sounds silly, but it matters to me. I’ve been to other establishments that serve a “special blend” or even a name brand, but they often taste too bitter for me. Plus, the coffee gets cold about 30 seconds after it is poured. While I obviously like their brew, their service is their best feature in my opinion. They always act happy to see customers, and their service is quick while still being personal. They’ll talk to you for a bit if you want, leave you alone if you’re busy, or have your order ready if you call ahead. One customer was greeted when he walked in by the waitress saying, “your coffee is already poured.” I replied, “wow—that’s service.” She stated that he always comes in at that time on Thursdays, so she likes to have things in place. I was amazed that she nonchalantly took notice at some point and had things already in order. This was particularly interesting because when we chatted for a bit she stated that she didn’t really wake up ‘til about 10:00am—it wasn’t even 8:00am yet.

So what’s my point? Well, a couple things. My favorite little breakfast joint illustrates several important customer needs. First, they provide a needed product at a great value. Second, that product is as good or better than their competitors. Third, they make an obvious effort to be personable and add little touches that earns them repeat business. Looking for ways to increase your success with customers? Keep these simple ideas in mind and see how often they have your product in mind when they’re “ordering.”

These are things I see in folks sometimes that are wrestling with a possible career change.

I often wonder what the reasons behind these fears.

Often, I think it’s just reluctance to take responsibility for a decision to make a change.

Besides…if you wait for ‘precision guidance’ from God…you can always blame him later if you make a bad decision, right?

Take responsibility. Quit waiting for Someone else to do it.
Today is the day for change.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 134 – Interview with Matt Wegner, Financial Coach

Matt Wegner is our guest on this latest interview series episode. He became a financial coach in 2009. He helps people take charge of their money instead of their money controlling them.

His training was in civil engineering. But, he went straight to the military after earning his degree. After 6 years, he moved to Wisconsin to work in manufacturing.

He was passionate about helping or empowering others so he got some training and took some classes on how to become a financial coach. He and his wife Janelle started their business on a part-time basis. They did this for 3 years until they got to a point where the only way to make their business profitable is if they focused on it full time.

Matt was a risk-taker but his wife was not so for 2 weeks he prayed to God asking for what he should do.

After 2 weeks, he got fired from his job. At that point, they knew exactly what they’re supposed to do. Within 3 to 4 months of losing his job, they were able to pay off their house and become debt-free.

Tune in to hear more about his story.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 133 – Ethics At Your Job

In this episode, my wife and I wrestle with the idea of ‘ethics at work’.

Years ago, I was at a job where I was asked to sell a defective product. It was a tough spot to be in. Over time, I decided to resign from that position.

Stephanie supported me 120%. She believed that God would provide something for us…and He did. Something better than we could have created ourselves.

If you’re in a difficult spot in your work, you can make a change. You don’t have to stay in a place where your ethics are violated.

Do the right thing in your job. Trust in God moving forward and making positive changes in your life. God will honor that.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 132 – Interview with Josh Bulloc: The Bootstrap Coach

Our guest for today is Josh Bulloc, the Bootstrap Coach.

Josh says “I help teach people take control of their lives. I call myself the Bootstrap Coach. I like the concept of the bootstraps. You’re pulling yourself up and you’re not asking for permission.”

“When I worked in manufacturing, I noticed that a lot of individuals didn’t realize they had the potential to take control of their lives because they’re letting the companies run their lives for them.”

“I’m very good at giving my opinion. I started working in an assembly line and I realized I didn’t like it. I was able to move away from that situation so I shared my learnings with other people who wanted to do the same thing.”

For people who want a change in their lives, Josh recommends going out there and trying out different things – talk to your supervisor to see if you can do something different. Go out in the weekends and volunteer.

“If you’re interested in something, go and do it for six months, see if you like it.”

“Write things down about yourself – your wants, your personality, etc. Journaling will help train you to look for things you’re after.

You can get in touch with Josh via the following:

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 131 – Finances are a Symptom of Other Problems

Our co-host for today is Gregg Pechmann, owner of Pechmann Coaching

Our topic for today are about finances.

According to Gregg, there are always some other underlying symptoms regarding a couple’s finances.

“If the spouses are not on the same page, things will not work.”

“Be intentional about the time where people sit down and talk about it. Praying with your wife really helps a lot. And things fall in place.”

He narrates that he and his wife pray before and after they talk about money.

Gregg adds “Sharon and I still have a lot of work to do. But we’ve come a long way from 3 years ago. It’s all spiritual – finances, your place of work, it’s all connected.”

“Why do you want to be rich? Is it to bless other people. My end goal in financial coaching is that you could become an unbelievable blessing to somebody else.”

Ever heard the expression, “colder than it looks outside”? Well, I encountered some nice people today that made things seem warmer than they might have otherwise appeared to be. The Midwest along with other areas of the country got hit with an ice storm on February 1st and 2nd. I lost power for a day. It wasn’t a major problem, but my laptop battery started getting low and I didn’t have internet access. A café nearby had power and internet access. As you might have already guessed, the café was crowded. People were trying to plug in cell phones and laptops. I braced for the worst, wondering if I would have to risk polite confrontation to eventually get my spot in the line for a power plug.

My fears were unnecessary and unfounded. Instead of rudeness and antipathy, folks were sympathetic and downright polite. Seemingly everyone else was in there for the same things that I was, so everyone cooperated to help each other out. When the gentleman next to was about to vacate his prime spot, a table within cord reach of an outlet, I sheepishly declined stating that I had forgotten my laptop cord. I had instead remembered to charge a cordless light lest I have to use candles again to light my reading efforts that night. He replied, “I can wait here and hold your spot so you can run home”. I was truly surprised, but tried not to show it. I thanked him and wondered about such good ‘fortune’. We’d made a little small talk when I first grabbed an open spot, but we were essentially strangers.

It reminded me that such encounters are a great antidote to the cynicism that seeps into me sometimes. I continue to read in the paper about employment and economic struggles, yet I have encountered several people in the year that landed jobs that were an excellent fit (and even higher paying in several instances) than a previous job. Think the job market is too competitive and uncaring right now? You might be surprised about the possibilities. Today was a refreshing reminder that things might be warmer than first seem.

Instead of wondering if spring will come early or late, put some spring in your career options and consider one of our career packages.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 130 – Getting Fired

Have you found yourself in danger of being fired? I found myself in this situation a few years ago. Here’s some things that I recommend that you ‘wrestle with’ if you feel like you may be fired soon.

1. Where’s your worth as a human being?

Is it in your job security? In your salary? Is it in God? Your family? Your friends?

2. How bad is it? If you lost your job tomorrow, are you going to be homeless? Are you truly never going to find a decent job again? What’s the worst possible scenario?

3. Could this really be for your good?

Let me remind you, however bad it is, it’s probably not as bad as you think it is.
