Sometimes you’ll never know the value of a moment till it becomes a memory. It’s ironic and unfortunate that I couldn’t recollect this memory. 4 years ago, on April 11th 2009, I had penned my first blogpost which reads-

“Hello...I am Purushu, an 18yr old design aspirant who has currently joined the department of fashion design, NIFT New Delhi. Of late, I've been a lot into fashion and its design aspects. I am a lot inspired by the artistic expression of fashion. I love wild silhouettes, intricate details, wacky cuts, crazy textures and bold colours.

As a budding designer, I'd like this blog to be my expression of fashion and design. This blog would be more of my fashion scrapbook where I'd write about my favourite collections, inspiring design elements, fashion illustrations, styling and fashion photography and my design creations that I'll be religiously doing for the rest of my life!”.

Memory, I have a poor one. Memories, I have many to rejoice and cherish and this is certainly one of them!

I still remember that arbitrary moment when I randomly opened blogger.com and created this blog when I had no clue that it’ll go on to be rated as Delhi's most influential blog! I had no idea that I'll be attending high-end social events. I had no idea that I'll be getting my 1st big pay cheque. I seriously never thought that I'll be writing the official fashion show reviews for FDCI WIFW. It's all crazy when I look back. I don't have anything more to add apart from thanking you all for the love and support!

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week AW 2013 - Day 1

It was about two years ago that I started reviewing fashion shows for FDCI Designer Mode magazine and it was a nostalgic ‘the-last-lesson’ moment when I signed up for the assignment for one last time before I relocate to Mumbai.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week AW 2013 season opened with the much-hyped Satya Paul show with Masaba Gupta as the brand’s new creative director. The show opened with garments featuring interesting neon lip-stick prints in neutral base fabric (styled with funky accessories). But unfortunately transforms from this to that in a span of 2 minutes!

The 2nd show of the day featured Anupama Dayal's ~~resort~~ autumn/winter collection which begins on black/white boho note and ends in some-what balika-vadhu style!

The first look at Annaikka by Kanika Saluja featured nude evening dresses, bejeweled in copper which were followed by dresses in blacks and deep red with Annaikka's signature metallic embellishments. Kanika Saluja combined leather along with bling elements to create powerful evening wear line for the autumn/winter 2013 season. For the third season in a row, the young and talented fashion designer finished in style with jaw-dropping showstopper outfit.

Siddartha Tytler's autumn/winter 2013 show started on a dark gothic note set in Victorian era. Quilted jackets, Victorian collars and brocades set high standards and expectations for the show which only got hijacked by commercial designs with nothing but oodles of sequins & crystals smeared all over. Nevertheless, the fashion designer is crystal-clear with his design aesthetics and few ensembles from the collection will be an ideal companion for a winter evening that lies ahead!

You know that it is an awkward start when a model has just opened the show and you hear people discussing from behind, 'Vineet Bahl ki kaam wali bai is on the ramp'.

Vineet Bahl is undoubtedly one of my favourite ethnic wear designers, but I could not help but compare his present autumn/winter 2013 collection with the ones he presented previously. Vineet Bahl's outfits generally feature strategically placed embroidery motifs which are both intricate and delightful. The garments from his autumn/winter 2013 however speaks a different story altogether, in terms of fabrics, colour palette and styling (seriously! STYLING)

Isn't the autumn/winter 2013 all about mix-and-match trend? There were many collections that offered geometric motifs with paisleys, drapes with structure, bright neons with murky charcoals etc. However, the outfits at Nikasha were different, they were simply monotonous, head-to-toe! I remember tweeting, "Cheers! The 'autumn/winter' show is over" after the show concluded and would love to hear what you think about the collection.

Fashion designer Surily Goel got the gorgeous Preity Zinta to walk the ramp for her, but what really caught my attention was a black top with honeycomb pattern that carried uncanny resemblance to Gucci SS 2013 ensemble (Read: http://www.purushu.com/2013/03/surily-goel-inspired-from-gucci.html)

The dashing fashion designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi remain the undisputed heroes of day one at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week AW 2013. On day 1 at WIFW, Pankaj & Nidhi (along with Annaikka and Namrata Joshipura) were the only designers who bothered to offer layered separates in winter fabrics. The autumn/winter 2013 runway at Namrata Joshipura was decorated with angel wings on both sides hinting that the collection was about a free spirited modern woman who's simply herself. The collection had the designer's signature edgy touch with hints of street inspired elements and sequins. Namrata Joshipura also remains the only designer to have used cashmere wool so far on day one. A variety of textiles including woolens, leather, polytex and georgette were used to craft highly wearable separates in tones of murky blacks, browns and bold red.

It has now become quite a predictable trend in Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week to see few ensembles or collections carrying uncanny resemblances to those which have been showcased previously. A few seasons ago I had tweeted images of Shantanu Goenka’s ensemble resembling Alexander McQueen. The déjà vu moment returned in WIFW Day 1 when Charu of Picky C tweeted, “Give me a minute till I recover from Surily's Gucci rip off. #wifw”.

The placement of they laser-cut honeycomb structure in black at Surily Goel carries eerie resemblance to Gucci spring/summer 2013 ensemble.

I definitely cannot disagree with Charu's tweet but again wont' completely agree either! Given that this follows exactly one season after Gucci SS 2013, the top at Surily definitely seems to be 'inspired' from Gucci. However, one shouldn't forget that honeycomb pattern is a major trend for this season and has featured in many other ramp shows including Alexander McQueen, Derek Lam and Marios Schwab.

Pankaj & Nidhi - Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week AW 2013

With veteran designers like Wendell Rodricks, David Abraham (of Abraham & Thakore duo) and Rahul Khanna (of Cue by Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna) cheering from the front row, the autumn/winter 2013 collection by the fashion designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi was titled ‘My Music Box’ and they interpreted the theme in terms of graphic motifs(piano keys, guitar/sitar strings etc), pop colours and by inducing rhythm(the design element) in the silhouettes in signature Pankaj and Nidhi laser cutwork and appliqué. The show featured a wide range of silhouettes - tapered skirts, below the knee length dresses, maxi-length and a couple of peplum dresses – all fitted at waist. The range also includes trench coats and dresses with lapel collars featuring intricate surface details in bright and pop hues of pink, blues and orange with black base.

Being contented is a state odious to human kind, especially when one is young, immature (the way women see it) and is in a relationship! We all want to end up with the right person, but even the best person is never THE right person simply because relationship is a bitch, an attractive one that comes with self-outlined rules, anticipation and demands. The pendulum fluctuates from joy and levity to seriousness and sorrow; with unfathomable insecurities of hope and unfulfilled promises. It is unfeasible for two people to strike a chord and reach over an agreement over everything, particularly in a relationship where it engages one’s persona, ego and pride in question.

Our troubles in life are as immense as we make them. I am not certain if this is a valid ruling in every case, but definitely cannot be overlooked, at least for some of us. Everyone has their own modest tales to recite, and we all would have come across more overwhelming tales than ours. When I hear humbling stories all around me, I feel small and insignificant. I feel diminutive about going gloomy over awfully naive things in life. I wish I could perhaps appreciate life for what it is than bawling about what it could have been.

God has got his own reasons for us to meet and come this far. We have been there for each other, sailed across the tides and I hope our love will flourish beyond what it is right now. We started as strangers, became friends, and we became one with each other and will remain one forever.

Persona and Disguise

Yet another day unfolds, as the skies mark the dawn. There is something genuinely enigmatic about this hour, as the entire world is stationary and still. The compelling day light has not commenced yet to vex us with daily hassles, nor is it the gloomy mysterious dusk. The murky blues pave way for crimson rays. The hush, tranquility and seclusion boost zest and vigor, bringing the finest out of me. I am a fierce gladiator; finest in his arena just like Maximus in the movie Gladiator.

I recently watched the magnum opus for the N-th time while my friend pointed out that Connie Nielsen (who played Lucilla) robustly resembled an Indian princess, adorned in embellished drapes with brocades and a ‘bindhi’. She certainly did! That instantly reminded me of a recent research work compiled by my ex-Professor (NIFT) Mrs. Toolika Gupta, where she discusses the probable influence of Roman Empire on the Indian sari.

Prof. Toolika Gupta taught us history of fashion and costumes at NIFT and her insightful research on ‘Influence of British Raj on Indian Clothing’ forms the very foundation of my graduate design collection.

To quote from her research, “Fashion is a representation of cultural identity. British entered Indian with their own cultural value and identity; the very British clothing and fashion statement, leaving the Indians admiring the ‘gora-sahibs’ and ‘mem-sahibs’. The average Indian wanted to copy their styles. Petticoat and blouse became part of Indian languages. Dhoti-kurta clad commoners started sporting shirts and trousers. Textile motifs changed from lotus to tulips with flowering trees displaying exuberant Baroque curves.”

Thus, the whole generation that grew up in India under the awe of the white man, constructed disguises to represent themselves as forward minded and educated. During the British Raj, we Indians disguised in large-scale to eradicate caste difference, to feel superior and to represent ourselves as forward minded.

I profoundly associate with the conception of persona and disguise. We construct complex disguises to represent ourselves as socially acceptable. We are so accustomed to disguise to others that in the end we become disguised to ourselves. Being a social animal, we are dual in nature.

As a child, I learnt from my environment on what parts of me can and cannot be out in the open. People fake a lot of human interactions, I fake it all.

We sport a social character (read mask), concealing the deeper identity in order to shield ourselves from being transparent and vulnerable. A persona is essential for us to adapt to the society’s demands. The real trouble however might start when you become identical to your persona, which might result in shallow, brittle and conformist kind of personality which excessive concern for what people think of you.

Probably the persona itself is accountable for the abundant futile relationships. It is the ‘persona’ that ALL humans fall for. With time when the mask unfurls, we are obligated to face the malicious reality - an ideal relationship being a big fat lie. Not every relationship fails, merely because they still haven’t distinguished beyond the mask. The phrase ‘And-they-lived-happily-ever-after’ is systematically cited in fairy tales, bluntly because it’s easier to fool around with kids.

THE WORLD SEES A DISGUISE, I SEE A PERSONA!

Nobody is set to foretaste my dark past apart from myself. Today when I throttle of isolation, I can look into a mirror and risk a confrontation with self. The mirror does not flatter but devotedly shows the face that I never show to the world. Call me a narcissist, but after all, I was born with my body, I have long accepted to live with my shadow personality (with the thrill of complete wrongness), I protect it for that is who I am and I will be there for myself until I rest peacefully in soil.

Maybe all that I have is the weather and for my own insecurities I think I’ll cuddle up with myself in the warmth of loneliness for all I know maybe amidst the randomness and madness that governs this universe there is only so much space I have.

Creative Pattern Making

The creative pattern making modusle has further enriched my creativity and skills as a fashion designer. Before the module, I would confine myself to form-hugging silhouettes and would be scared to venture into volumes and body defying forms. I experimented with body-defying forms and silhouettes. Drawing my inspiration from Japanese fashion designers like Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake and Indian designers like Kallol Datta, I have various forms and shapes that completely redefine the human anatomy. The following muslin garments were conceptualized, designed and constructed in a limited time span of 3 hours.

Inspired from the concept of turban being a rectangular piece of fabric that is twisted and draped, a rectangular piece of fabric has been twisted and stitched at the centre front with sleeves attached. The top has a fitted front while the excess fabric elegantly falls to create delicate cowls at the back.

The fitted shirt top has the placket extended into built up neckline and gently falls to create layers.

The contours and lines of a petal, the organic form inspiration has been converted in terms of seams and panel shapes. The shoulders are dropped, delineating the arm hole with sleeve pattern cut from a single spiral panel. Two dimensional patterns combine to illustrate 3-D forms which are rebelling and highly dramatic.

Square piece of fabric has been folded in origami paper crane technique and the pristine folds are later draped to lend extreme emphasis on shoulders with revealing back.

The exercise brief was to write a story, derive an element as inspiration in order to create a garment. Drawing inspiration from the ant in ‘And and the Grasshopper’ story, the style lines and the silhouettes of the garment reflect an ant’s body contour with exposing back. The bodice abides by the body shape while godet detailing at hips adds volue in turn glorifying the feminine curves with additional emphasis.

External panels of fabrics were additionally inserted in a bell sleeve inorder to add volume and redefine the contours.

Taking cue from the legendary fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, the garment is extremely rebelling, towards the intellectual side of fashion. The garment breaks almost every possible rule right from the arm-hole to waist definition. Panels of godet have been inserted in various places such as sleeve and waist to create unusual volume.

The fitted top has one continuous spiral seam that starts at neckline, goes around front and back and finally ending at the waistline. Hence, the entire top has been cut and stitched out of a single panel!

Few weeks ago, when I was provided with the press release at Hemant and Nandita's spring/summer 2013 show at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, the visuals and the theme which were inspired from kaleidoscopic prints seemed to remind me of Prabal Gurung's pre-fall 2012 campaign.

It'll be unfair if we tag this with plagiarism. Some times, it is just co-incidence.

Celeb inspired Styling Shoot

It would sound abrupt if I write this blogpost without owing an explanation for the prolonged absence from blog/twitter/facebook. Well, it’s the final year… final f**king year! I have been developing my portfolio in college for the campus placements that lies ahead next year and hence, have distanced me from various fashion events in the city barring the Delhi couture week, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and the recently concluded Blenders Pride Fashion Tour. Believe it or not… I’ve been sleepless for about three consecutive nights (yes... 72 f**kin hours!) and that is how it has been for over the last 3-4 months!
Though I would love to share my experiences from all the three fashion events that I had mentioned above, I’ll confine this particular blogpost to a photo shoot, styled by students from NIFT New Delhi. The assignment brief was to style a classmate, drawing inspiration from any famous personality/celebrity. The following three are my personal faourites! The first question asked by my professor at NIFT, three years ago on the very first day in my college was - What is fashion? Students came up with plenty of answers talking about fashion being comfortable, glamorous, looking good and stylish etc. The answers were merely a mix of what people in general perceived fashion is to be. So what exactly is fashion? Before answering that let's understand the terms 'style' and 'trend'.

STYLE is a way of expressing something that is characteristic of a particular person or group of people of a period. In short, style = self expression.

TREND is the ‘Style’ that is popular at a given time.

FASHION is defined as a prevailing custom which majority in a group follow at any one time, no matter how small the group is. It reflects the lifestyle of a community. In short, Fashion is the style that is in trend. Fashion is always trendy, but a style need not be.

Every generation laughs at the old fashion, but religiously follows the new. Fashion is evolutionary: something that is ever changing. A fashion that was IN yesterday is forgotten today. A fashion that is IN today will be forgotten tomorrow.

Fashion and style are easily misunderstood by many. There seems to be a lots of confusion in understanding fashion and style and their relationship with trends and this surprisingly extends to many fashion and style bloggers too. For example, the following are some snippets from a conversation I had with a fashion blogger in twitter.

Lauren states that she, "beleives in wearing what you want when you want, rather than following trends specifically and fashion isn't a right-or-wrong process, it's individual".

1. There is no fashion without trend. Trends decide which style is in fashion!

2. Unlike Lauren's statement, fashion IS a right-or-wrong process. You either get it right or wrong. After all, Fashion is just a combination of art and science, which can be predicted with remarkable accuracy by those who study and understand the fundamentals of the fashion.

Every person in this planet has a style statement of their own. It's just that some people are more fashion conscious and trendy which sets them apart and fashion bloggers are one of them.So what is a fashion blogger's role in fashion cycle? Who are fashion bloggers - fashion innovators, leaders or followers?

Fashion Innovators are generally the fashion designers and celebrities like Lady Gaga who dare to be different and introduce new fashion trends. Ex: Christian Dior's New Look, Madonna's innerwear for outerwear look in 80s.

Fashion Leaders are generally the public celebrities, high profile socialites or even some fashion bloggers like Bryanboy who are the first to adopt a new trend. Say Bryanboy wears a Prada SS13 ensemble right after the show even before the season has begun, he's probably one of the first to adopt the trend, hence a fashion leader!

Fashion motivators are the fashion conscious crowd, role models of latest fashion. Trendy people who are first among the 'consumer-segment' to adopt a new trend. Fashion bloggers are a classic example of fashion motivators.

Fashion followers are those who adopt a trend when the trend reaches the peak stage. For instance, colour blocking a big trend this season, kick-started some 2-3 years ago. By spring/summer 2012, the trend has reached it's peak stage and will soon see a decline as it will pave way for other trends. Ideally, fashion followers are those who adopt the colour-blocking trend this spring/summer when it has already reached the peak stage and will soon decline. Fashion laggers are those 'unfashionable' people who will adopt a trend at its decline stage, say from a clearance sale!

Being fashion motivators what is a fashion blogger's role in fashion cycle? Fashion bloggers are a 'catalyst' in fashion cycle! Fashion bloggers are a very powerful tool in industry who are speeding up the fashion cycle and trends like never before. With mass-media communication and internet, fashion bloggers help the latest trends reach the mass much easier and faster than it was ever before. We fashion bloggers educate ourselves and rest of the world with latest style trends which results in speeding up the fashion cycle, which in turn results in more number of trends which indirectly leads to an increased competition among the manufacturers(designers and brands). When there is an increased competition there are more number of styles in the market! Knowingly or unknowingly, fashion bloggers have a major influence over the fashion industry - The very reason why the numbers concerning fashion bloggers have been increasing ever since the trend that started a decade ago.

ARE COACHING CLASSES NECESSARY FOR NIFT ENTRANCE EXAM?

SHRUTI asked this question which I have been asked like a 100 times before, IF COACHING CLASSES ARE NECESSARY FOR NIFT ENTRANCE EXAM.

Ans: Honest opinion: NOPE. But there's no harm in joining one since coaching classes gives you a habit of practising regularly and you'll realize in exam that you have finished much ahead of other. Practice. Increases you pace. It doesn't matter if you practice at home or at coaching classes. More you practice, the faster you solve the questions. and trust me. TIME LIMIT IS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR IN NIFT EXAM.

Another plus point joining coaching classes is that you always have some one to help you out when you have this 'creative-mind-block' phase or have other doubts.

What you have to realize is that if it is all necessary at the whopping cost most coaching institutions charge.

Why I love Givenchy Pre-Spring/Summer 2013

I AM BANNED, NOW WHAT?

Well, folks, I need your support over this issue. Do share it and voice your opinion to expose this unethical practice. I have been in the IFB community every since I started blogging four years ago. I have been featured in various Links a la Moda sections. However, I was banned yesterday (from IFB's twitter account) after a particular conversation in twitter. Following are the screenshots of the conversation I had yesterday with this blogger named Lauren, who is possibly a close associate of IFB or handles their twitter account.

And minutes after this particular conversation, I found myself banned from IFB's account!

I would like to point out the following:

1. IFB tweeted saying they would delete any disrespectful tweets. But the ONLY tweet that I had replied to IFB was the very first one when I stated that peplums and lace are out of trend. Was that really disrespectful? Moreover, without any prior warning I was banned/blocked by the IFB twitter account and later labelled a 'SNARK'. Now I wonder whether that is in any manner an ethical way to treat a community member who has been an active participant for four years.

2. Lauren (@everyday_runway) sneaked into the conversation I was having with IFB. All I did was have an open discussion about fashion. Neither did I abuse her, talk about her personal life or breach any other ethical code. It's unfair on her part to misuse what-so-ever influence she has over the community to get me blocked. Later she proudly tweeted "haha love it, POWER to the positive!". Whoa!!

3. I truly regret and criticize this attitude from both IFB and Lauren. Therefore I demand an apology from IFB moderators for this DISRESPECTFUL behaviour towards me and also ask the community to snap ties with these bloggers who misuse the so-called 'positive power' given to them.

4. Dear readers, contrary to Lauren's statements which stated fashion being a self expression or being independent of trends is not EXACTLY right. Its disappointing to see this coming from a fashion blogger with 2K followers.

I was labelled a SNARK. So be it! Truth is that ignorance makes you think even a normal person being a SNARK.

P.S. I have already emailed the team at IFB and eagerly waiting for a response.

As I had mentioned earlier that I had taken the issue up with the team at IFB. The founder, Jennine Jacob replied me stating that the twitter block has been lifted.
Things have been sorted out. I thank everyone who shared this post. I thank everybody who showed some spine and raised their voice and opinion. Got nothing more to add.

This would be my second blogpost in the preceding 2 months! I have been residing here in Bangalore for about a couple of weeks now. Most of my friends and blog followers are already aware of the fact that Sayanti and I are interning in an export house here and setting up an eco-friendly fashion label.

Being a Bangalorean has been a good experience so far. It is more of a cosmopolitan city than any other Indian city that I have been to. It is a complete mix of culture. I start a conversation in English and it ends in Telugu, start another in Telugu and it ends in Hindi, start yet another conversation in Hindi and this one ends in Tamil! Lol. That’s how it is here. There’s no need to introduce you to the infamous ‘Bangalore weather’. The summers record a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius! The nights are really cold and I regret the fact that I didn’t pack any woolens with me before I left from Delhi. The chilly wind here adds insult to the injury. It remains windy all day and it takes more than a minute to even light a cigarette when you are outdoors. Every other road here seems to have a mall and what’s even interesting is that people walk to malls even to do their grocery shopping!

Normally my day begins at 9:30, sometimes even late (blame the weather!) as we travel from Indira Nagar to our office in an auto. The team here consists of 3 interns from NIFT Delhi, a senior merchandiser and our boss.

As a part of our internship, we started off with a research to understand eco-fashion, find the target consumer segment, understand the kind of styles and fabric they prefer etc. The basic idea is to create an eco-friendly fashion label with healing properties or ‘ayurvedic clothing’ brand in simple words. After a week of intense research, we started off with the range plan. The label has three lines, Sayanti is designing the basic clothing range, another intern is developing the maternity range and I am designing the fitness line or the yoga line to be precise.

If we work as per our plan, we’ll be done with designing/range development by this month and will start with sampling (creating the samples of the various styles we developed) by next month.

Well. Currently I am doing a research on eco-friendly fashion. I have shared some of my thoughts here on eco-friendly fashion. Read it and do click this link and let me know what you think about eco-fashion.

Legendary actress Meryl Streep collected her iconic award for the Best Acress, wearing Lanvin's first ever eco-friendly gown at the 84th annual Academy awards. With designers like Stella McCartney and Yves Saint Laurent offering eco-friendly clothing line, Lecoanet Hemant launching a range of Ayurvedic clothing line here in India, the term 'sustainable fashion' has created quite a stir around. Let's face it, from checking labels to clothing care and the choices we make when we purchase, we all go gaga over eco-friendly clothing choice. It's the same we who team the 100% organic cotton dress with Christian Dior leather clutch, carry leather wallets and neatly polish our leather Oxfords for the board meeting scheduled for tomorrow. It's true that it is no charity. It is work.

This discussion aroused in a couple of weeks in college when we were learning 'Ethical Fashion'.The term 'ethical fashion' represents an approach to the design, sourcing and manufacture of clothing which maximises benefits to people and communities while minimising impact on the environment.

“If you describe something as ethical, you mean that it is morally right or morally acceptable.” Collins English Dictionary.

We were taught that a business or initiative is not sustainable unless the triple bottom line is integrated at the core of business practices and policy, from board level to studio, shop, or factory floor.

1. SOCIAL
Increasing the capacity and wellbeing of the people and communities behind fashion. Any fashion business depends on the people behind it. In a broader context, poverty and exploitation of the human workforce behind fashion affects the stability of the industry itself.

2. ENVIRONMENTAL
Minimising the environmental impact of all business operations, throughout the supply chain. Creating and acting upon opportunites to reduce environmental issues beyond the immediate operations- such as awareness raising , investment in and support of environmental initiatives.

3. COMMERCIAL
Without a robust financial business model, none of the above can be achieved. Good intentions without an effective business structure can backfire. A sustainable approach includes quality products or services that meet market needs and demands and are fairly marketed.

Eco-friendly Clothing of Sweaters, for example, are usually made from either cotton or wool. Wool might be a great renewable resource. But sustainable fashion is also about minimizing the carbon footprint that we leave. While wool is a renewable resource, the methods used to "grow" and harvest that wool are not without controversy. Sheep used in the production of wool are often treated with chemical pesticides to ward off insects such as lice and fleas or mange. These pesticides don't stay on the sheep; they can harm the environment by contaminating groundwater and are highly toxic to fish and amphibians.
Chemicals are also used in the food sheep are fed. These additives are used to boost growth rates but they also contaminate water resources - surface, ground and drinking water - primarily through the residual chemicals in sheep feces.

Large-scale livestock operations have huge eco-friendly Clothing environmental impacts. Soil erosion, run off and water contamination are just a few of the environmental issues associated with livestock farming. Another, perhaps larger environmental issue, is enteric fermentation. Otherwise known as livestock gas and burps. The methane released by these bodily functions is a primary contributor to global warming.
Cotton poses an even bigger concern for the environment. Conventional cotton, that is. Conventionally raised cotton is highly pesticide and water intensive. In fact, cotton is often considered the world's most pesticide-intensive crop, responsible for 24 percent and 11 percent of global insecticide and pesticide sales, respectively. Of the estimated $2 billion worth of chemicals used on cotton crops each year, over half are considered hazardous by the World Health Organization.

The use of leather and fur has also created plenty of controversies. Various fashion designers and celebrities have angered organizations such as PETA etc.

1. Alessandra Ambrosio The model admitted that she dyed her maltese dog, Buddha, blue. According to PETA, dyeing animals is cruel and unhealthy.

2. Cindy Crawford She posed for an anti-fur PETA ad in her early years. But in 2004, she modeled for a fur company. PETA sees her as a sell-out.

3. Lady Gaga Her unusual outfits are fine as long as she doesn't use meat in them. But on two occasions the star has worn meat as an outfit. Not cool in PETA's book.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow Her and her husband, Chris Martin, refused to walk four houses down the road to attend a party. Instead, they had to be driven to the event. Talk about a big carbon footprint!

5. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley She is not afraid to say that she's a farm girl, and she'll shoot livestock. Not what PETA wants to hear.

6. Karl Lagerfeld He's no stranger to fur and leather. He loves using fur in his collections.

7. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (yes, they count as one) The twins have been on PETA's bad side for years for the amount of leather and fur they wear.

8. Naomi Campbell She also did an ad for PETA, in which she appeared naked. But in 2009, she was the face for the fur designer Dennis Basso's campaigns.

PETA has many good intentions. But it's silly publicity stunts has often made it look like a mere joke.

Being eco-friendly is about sustainability in environment. I don't see use of leather, fur or Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress violating the code of sustainability in any manner!

Eco-fashion clothes:
-are made using organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides and silk made by worms fed on organic trees
-dont involve the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics
-Are often made from recycled and reused textiles. High-quality garments can be made from second-hand clothes and even recycled plastic bottles
-are made to last, so that people keep them for longer
-come from fair trade - the people who make them are paid a fair price and have decent working conditions.

I am pretty much sure that Lady Gaga's meat dress or Karl Lagerfeld's glamorous fur is completely renewable and doesn't leave carbon foot prints! It we are okay with carrying leather wallets and eating steak for dinner use of fur or meat in garment is not even a question!

This is 'that' time of the year when more than one things go wrong.

The time when you get to know what your once best friends talked behind you.

The time when your laptop crashes.. wiping away data (the only records of 3 years of handwork and toil) that were to make your portfolio.

The time when you down with illness and tired both physically and mentally.

The time when everything is 'black' around you.

The time when things are clear yet so blurred and shapeless.

The time when I'd want to wipe out the colour and escape into emptiness.

The time when you would need 'break' from everything around.

But, this is also the time when you realize who'd be holding your hand and standing next to you when you need the most, some one you can count on!

DRAPING KNITS

Few months ago, when the semester had just begun... Knitwear module was one of the most boring subject that we had. I would hopelessly operate the flat bed machine to knit swatches of jersey, cardigan and so on. Post the mid-semester exams, we started draping with knits and that's where probably the real essence of the subject lies in... draping with knits is pure FUN. I designed and constructed my first t-shirt yesterday. The unexplained happiness that you feel when you wear something you had designed and stitched with plenty of efforts and hard work!

The t-shirt has a single seam line with no side seams. The seam starts at the neckline yoke, cuts the back and ends at the hem near front princess seam. Left: A flat illustration of the tshirt I designed. Right: Myself wearing the tshirt.

Sayanti and myself in our respective tshirts. The black panel in Sayanti's t-shirt created a beautiful illusion as the style lines were beautifully incorporated into both the sleeves.

Like it is quoted in the image above ‘you can’t do anything without being criticized. We live in a society where people can’t survive if they’re not judging another person’. People are judged and stereotyped on basis of gender, culture, race, sexuality and every other possible human identity. Every one of us must have experienced it some time in our everyday walk of life.

Four years ago, I migrated from Chennai to New Delhi to pursue graduation in fashion design from NIFT New Delhi – STOP!

Fashion Design? Isn’t that something only girls study?
Fashion Design? Why do you wanna become a tailor?
Fashion Design? It’s expensive. The course is only for riches who spend lavishly!
Fashion Design? Dude! Fashion designers are gay. Don’t!
Fashion Design? Fashion design students smoke, dope, are alcoholic and party like a maniac. Don’t get in there. Don’t.
From a distant aunt’s cousin’s son’s brother-in-law to auto drivers who drop me at college, I've heard it everywhere and from almost everyone.

When I joined my college in Delhi, I was a 'Madrasi' who spoke 'South Indian' and was asked if I really apply coconut oil in hair and use the same coconut-oil to cook idli-vada-sambar!! Leave alone the 'Anna Rascala Mind-It' dialogue which I had never known before watching Om Shanti Om!

There are more than enough stereotypes out there.

In a college which has a healthy female population, one cannot help but take pity over the ridiculous stereotyping against women. You don't have to term a girl as 'behenji' just because she is simple, studious, doesn't date and wears ethnic clothes. And neither do you have to judge a girl being a 'slut' just because she dresses up, looks good, has a boyfriend, is social and smokes or drinks. It is about an individual's choice. Walk a mile in their shoes before judging and stereotyping. If you don't know the person, ask the person. If you don't agree with the person, talk to the person. If you don't like it, say it in person. You don't have to keep silent and judge the person. If you decide to sit back and judge me, you are not describing me as a person, but in turn describing who YOU are!

With growing exposure towards the fashion industry over the years, I was also exposed to some of the most sensitive stereotyping on basis of looks, gender and sexuality! Men in fashion industry are very often stereotyped being gay. A man who likes to dress up and look good need NOT be gay. He just knows to groom himself and look presentable.

In India, the concept of beauty itself is highly stereotyped with fair skin. It might be because of the fact that we were predominantly ruled by light-skinned foreigners throughout the course of our history that fair skin is bluntly associated with superiority and henceforth, prettiness (and the entire nation is obsessed with fairness creams). Thanks to Bollywood beauties like Kajol, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone etc. for showing us that dusky skin is exotic, hot and one need not have a fair complexion to look beautiful!

I couldn't help but share this visual from a magazine-shoot featuring Tara Lynn who shut the mouth of all those who associated size with beauty! Size-zero is past. Tara looked as hot as any other Victoria Secrets model look. Tara looked gorgeous and boosted confidence in millions of plus sized women. She set an example and made millions of teenage girls who are lavishly under diet. Being skinny is unhealthy and has got nothing to do with looking beautiful. Beauty is independent of colour or size. Plus sized women are NOT ugly! Big is beautiful too. (Oh. Please leave Aishwarya Rai alone! She just gave birth to a baby. A healthy mom is all that a child needs to stay healthy and sound. I am sure, Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan knows better than any of us on when to gain or loose weight. It is an individual's choice. Society should accept the person for what they are and stop judging!)

Like I had quoted earlier, "There are more than enough stereotypes out there".
Stereotypes based on race/nationality.
* All Middle Easterners are terrorists - How is that fair?
* All black people are good at sports.
* All Asians are studious, have squinty eyes and speak the same language - Ignorance!
* Africans commune with wild animals in day to day life while Indians still drive elephants - Heights of ignorance!
Stereotypes based on gender/sexuality.
* All gay men are feminine - They simply aren't!
* All women love to cook and clean - Sick mentality.
* Women in power are mean, lonely and bitchy - Straight out of jealously?
* All step-mothers are wicked and cruel - Seriously? Are we still stuck up with Cinderella stories for 5yr olds?
* All men are tough and a real man doesn't cry.
Stereotypes based on physical appearance.
* Blonde women are dumb - How exactly is hair colour supposed to decide a person's intelligence?
* People sporting deadlocks smoke weed.

Before stereotyping next time, think if you would liked to be judged the same way. Let us spread the word and create awareness. When I was stereotyped for being a non-Hindi speaker, I did feel offended but also bothered to patiently explain almost everyone who had such queries and today things have changed drastically! Most of my friends in college can now not only differentiate between Tamil and Telugu but have this cult following for the Southern film industry! Life has drastically changed over the last three years. I penned my first blogpost on 11th April 2009. I'll be entering 4th year of fashion blogging in a couple of days and my blog titled DESIGNER PURUSHU is now PURUSHU ARIE.
IT IS TIME TO CHANGE.
