This piece is 14" by 11" and was a combination of three different images. It was made for a loyal returning customer. I have really embraced making people as part of my regular work load. Losing a cherished pet is never easy. This was especially true for a dear friend of mine, Dawn. She had Ali for some 10 years before having to say good bye last week. She made every reasonable effort a loving pet mother could trying to comfort her baby. In the end his heart was simply not strong enough to keep beating.

I have Eddie who looks just like Ali and the thought of losing him makes me queezy. I did what I thought was best for her by making a wood burning to honor her friend. She loves it and is eager to get it via UPS. Please share your method of getting over the loss of a pet.

"The Ladybug Lady" and her sister

The above holds a special meaning to me. First, I took the picture at the TA truck stop at exit 235 on I90 in Ohio. Second, the woman with the lady bug said this is one of the best pictures of her and her sister she has seen in a long time.

As you can imagine I do not want to share personal family business on a blog that is read all over the world. I will just say that the "Lady bug Lady" is in the end stages of a battle waged against cancer. I was able to drive them to a casino nearby as a wish of hers. I wrote about this on my other site richardlpryorjr.com on July 30, 2011. She had a copy of the above picture printed out that she enjoyed looking at.

I took it upon myself to recreate that image on a large basswood oval. She was very pleased with the likeness. I wanted to share this story with you all. This cancer is no joke I now am more acutely aware of the hell it takes on loved ones. I will have much more to say about this as time progresses.

Parma Animal Shelter will be auctioning off a reusable Wood Gift Card

In an effort to help the lives of suffering animals in my community, I will be donating a custom piece to the highest bidder. The auction will take place Saturday and the winner will be able to order a customized pet portrait. This is my first of many such outreach efforts to help look after animals who are certainly affected by the economic downturn. Donating in some places has all but dried up.

I know this is not much but I will do what I can to help. I got my older dog Billy from a no kill animal shelter and I see his life vastly improved, since the day I got him. He is part of our family and has been my bunkmate every night since 2005. I wish there were good homes for every animal out there, but sadly that is just not the case.

I will provide a link for the shelter and list the information for their dinner. I want to thank Debbie Kennedy who is the shelters fund raiser. I met with her yesterday and made plans to continue working to help the four legged friends, who need our help. I am eager to share the picture I will be making once I get there wooden gift card pictured above. Have a great week everyone.

A few weeks ago I got this photo in a collection from my Uncle Mike Pryor. It contained several pictures from back in the 70's. I was excited to see this one since I had never seen it before. I thought of my Mom, and all that she had given up to be a stay-at-home mom with us. I know this is not possible for most people these days. I know it wasn't much easier then, which is why her sacrifice is so meaningful to me.

My parents met at Kent State University in the mid-sixties and were married not long after. She did complete her Education Degree and taught a number of years before starting a family. Beth my sister and I were there only two children. I know there were some lean times as a result of her staying home with us. I am sure it would have been easier if she had went back to work. She has certainly made up for those years since she has been a full time reverend since 1998. Her church, Union United Church of Christ in Tekonsha, Michigan has members who keep her busy and she loves the work she is doing. She had to blow me off the phone the other day to go to the Jr. High football game. Some members have kids that play on the team. She is loved and needed there just as she was at the time the photo that inspired this wood burning was taken. I am a lucky man to have such a caring Mom.

I made this for her as a permanent reminder of those days. I know she will love it and I cannot wait to see her soon and give it to her. I love you Mom.
