This post will be a personal ‘feel’ on that cards from the set of Worldwake. Considering that quite a mix comments were given for this set, especially compared to the previous block, Shards of Alara.

Generally speaking, being a set to stage after Zendikar, Worldwake feels like what it should be, a second set which reinforces the Main block’s theme. With a new take on ally mechanics, landfall interaction methods and also the “Upgrade” to Multi – Kicking mechanic, some spotlights should be granted to several cards in this set to bring out its prominent features.

Lets start off with the Multi – Kickers.

Apex Hawks is a fine card, a firm power/toughness along with flying, in limited his worth investing either earlier on for dishing damage or soaking up damage against heavy fliers late game.

Gnarlid Pack, more of a Vanilla with the Multikicker attached on. If you look at this creature in someway, it feels like the multikicker cost is as good as putting another 2 CMC vanilla 2 power/2 toughness on the field, but it just adds 1 +1/+1 counter instead.

Enclave Elite, 3 CMC for a 2/2, this time with evasion, I can imagine people playing this with Convincing Mirage or Spreading Seas, and on a turn 5 throw in this to make it a 3/3 to dish for damage. Good for Mono – Blue Merfolk decks which might run stuff like Merfolk Sovereign to give it a tougher build or evasion.

This my friend, is one of the few crazy ones. Vampire has alot of support from this block itself, 1 CMC for 1/1 with Swampwalk. Looking at it this card spells aggro from every single direction. I could play this any time during a game to enjoy its benefit of either a turn 3 2/2 Swamp walk, or a turn 1 1/1 Swamp walk or even at later games. Just try imagining it with a Vampire Nocturnus in play, turn 5 with full mana investment means a 5/4 flying, Swamp walk vampire.

Skitter of Lizards, I had an unfriendly introduction to this card which successfully beat me down from 6 to 0. 1 CMC for 1/1 with Haste, Comparing it with the other elemental (Hellspark Elemental, Spark Elemental etc), the ability to increase its own toughness as well is one of the reasons why this is better way off. But same as almost all “investing” spells, this requires alot of mana and patient, not throwing this out before the time has come is also a key factor. The only good side is that it stays, not killed at the end of turn like the other “One used elemental”.

Lightkeeper of Emeria, 4 CMC for 2/4 with flying. A solid blocker in my own opinion, but to harvest out the most for this creature from the additional benefit, maybe a Cradle of Vitality to match up to it, 1 kick will simply earn you 2 +1/+1, but that means atlease with 7 land out. Constructed might not see it as it takes too long to set it up.

Very solid card, 4 CMC for a 3/3 flier, people might play this as a beat down more in my opinion. Although the evasion it gives other creatures might give u a winning condition as well. Generally cool and seems fitting in most decks in limited.

Bloodhusk Ritualist, Yet again, another contender on the Mono – Black scene. I can imagine it to replace quite a few cards, someone mentioned to me that this card is practically a Mind Sludge with a 2/2 body. Ill beg to differ as this is more than just Mind Sludge with a body, as this card feels like a “Come in to Play Specter”.

Deathforge Shaman, notice something? It is a heavy cost 4 power creature, but the investment for it makes this rather a late gamer instead. This card can easily be used either as a finisher, or simply used to wither down enemy’s life for other cards in this sets, like Guul Draz Vampire and the new Ruthless Cullblade to gain its secondary advantage. This creature might be just 1 point out of bolt’s range, but its enough as a soaker to block out some of the nasty stuff we have in this set.

Of course, how can we miss out multikickers on spells. This however feels like another Into the Roil , the only difference is how much mana your gonna invest in it for the drawing effect. The counter effect however feels like a Spell Snip, where you might not really use it for that purpose. Plus in limited, there is a better drawing spell than this which I’ll touch on later in awhile.

An amazing piece of artifact, one of the few really playable in many decks, right when it is invested with good mana or with a good deck to go with. What is so fun about this card? It is the fact that it plays around with Charge counters. With a CMC of 0, it can come into play very easily, adding up to the affinity theme, plus playing around with charge counters will allow full manipulation of this card. Its just time before we see this card featured in one of the new extended decks.

Before I move on to the more not so “Colour Pie” Cards with multi kicker, Ill want to touch on this card. Wolfbriar Elemental. ITS A BOMB!!!! 4 CMC for a 4/4 which creates 2/2’s for 1 Green mana, I can imagine the madness this can pull out when you ramp up lands for this creature. Imagine combo this cards with land ramp spells (Explore, Khalni Heart Expedition, Rampant Growth.) Whats better than this? Oran-Rief, the Vastwood. All the 2/2 Tokens get a +1/+1 pump, including the Elemental itself, Master of the Wild Hunt joins in the fray, causing all your tokens to be used as removals. What more can someone do when you decided to play with a Overrun on your army of Wolfs?

Strength of the Tajuru, Its a fun card to an extend, While you give creatures +1/+1 counters, the only problem with it is how much? It might take heavy investment on this card to really reap the full effect, or merely a small amount to achieve the winning condition of Mayael’s Aria.

Marshal’s Anthem, Whats so wrong about this card. It is the fact that this card is more than just a Glorious Anthem +1 White, it is with the Multi Kick which gives it the wrong feel. Why so? In a heavy constructed theme deck, this could easily swoop players off the table in 1 game. Bringing back creatures like Captain of the Watch, or even the godly Bushwhacker to finish a game, I can even imagine playing this in an Ally deck, where people would not suspect that the Kazandu Blademaster would raise again. Not to mention Kabira Evangel.

Comet Storm, a Blaze with +1 or a Fireball without the divide factor. This card would be useful in multi – player concept, as the target is limited to different targets. Feels more of a Branching bolt, as its either player or creature (Note Planes walkers are not target-able by this card at all!) Might be fun in a deck which play copying effects (Twin Cast, Pyromancer Ascension) where you can legally target a single target twice.

Yar, I know this is already the week where its “Release Party”. I just reach back to Singapore so this is a Large Post Back Log

Ok! Worldwake! Its a Crazy Pre – release for me for sure. It was a crazy day, as I’s always suffering from the “Pre – Release” Flu since my first pre release @ Shards of Alara. Practically it means “Tissue papers + MtG Cards”, nasty shit yes. But real crazy stuff happened to me….. as usual.

To me, not opening fresh packs means my luck meter shot super high, and its right. as what I opened that day is way too crazy…. What are the bombs which I opened?? See for yourself…

Yes, an Elf Bomb. Like what 1 of the guys said. You always gets the mother, but not the child (hint * Teh Choosen One…)

A foil one, to add to the pain…..

THE ONLY ONE WHICH IS OPENED!!!!!!!!

plus…

Not something to be surprised as theres alot opened….

The only problem posted to me when I sort out my cards…. And also from not playing in pre – releases for awhile (Yar, I missed out Zendikar due to a worse Flu!)

No offenses to anyone out there, I love Chandra too, but this is the best way to feel when you hear that announcement…..

In the end my pool came up with something I’ll rather considered to be good, mostly effectively against weenie lovers.

Pure weenie killer, although it means trying to survive a turn 5 with heavy beating, especially Pulse trackers (Mini versions of Infectious Horror)

My one and only few bomb which would sink almost any small army…. but to no avail…

Looks good, feels good, works well…. but limited in limited. Might see better play in constructed then in sealed deck.

Since I was on a flu, and it kicked my brain off the working side, I ended up plummering down quite fast. The only consolation I had was this :

I always had luck with angels….

In the end, the guy who got my Jace, ended up snagging another Jace in his prizes…. Damn lucky guy he is…

To sum it off, Its being a good nice set, but there are more to this set then what is just seen on the spoilers. Zendikar and Worldwake. Next up would be Rise of the Eldrazi in just 2 months time. Guess they are really trying to do a large milking time by replacing the whole of standard in 1 year!

Among the community and public, there has been many opinions regarding The EOY’09. Many questions and comments where made regarding different aspect of the event. Following our report on The EOY 09, we have a very great pleasure to speak with Tim Wong, Chairman for The EOY 09 to understand more about the scenes running behind The EOY 09.

PZportal: Why do you want to pick up EOY after STAC let go of it?

Tim: I feel that EOY is an event that I personally like a lot; it’s one of the cosplay events I’ve gone to every year since ‘05. So among all the cosplay and J-rock events, I will always go to EOY, it’s something which I won’t miss. Also I think this group of people (that attend EOY) is very talented. They like to perform and sing, and have a lot of different skills, and they’re very good at making costumes. It’s a group of people that have a lot of talent but are not given a proper platform to perform. So when I heard that STAC was going to close down it was rather disheartening. So I felt, why don’t we try at it again? If not, all the talent we see here will just disappear.

PZportal:We know that STAC is a cosplay club, but all we know about EOY’s committee last year was that it was led by you. Could you give us an introduction to the rest of your committee?

Tim: The team had six people last year, but we have 8 to 9 people now, so we’ve grown slightly this year. Generally I am the founder, chairman for the event. Zhong Hao (Vincent) is our designer. Yuan Le does all the programming and web design; the registration system and event flow on the website is done by him. He’s the expert in the area, as his main job is a full time programmer. We also have an art group from Republic Polytechnic helping us who are called Dayaku, led by Ophelia and Jiemin. So we have these two to help us in artwork and drawing, like the ones in the event booklets. Ophelia is also in charge of the booth allocation. Makan and Shi Hai are my left and right hand people. They are the operation personnel; they help with tasks ranging from moving tables, doing milk runs and buying food, to giving cues to the performers, and making sure everything is well taken care of and in place. So basically it’s a small team but we work very closely together and we feel that it’s been very effective.

PZportal: How was the committee formed ? Did you seek for staff online, or did you ask your close friends?

Tim: Yuan Le and Vincent are both very close friends of mine, and they’re also EOY goers who like EOY a lot. They always go to EOY to take pictures, so that’s how I got those two. As for the RP group, they approached us during the production of EOY, and I thought, why not give them a chance? And it worked out quite well.

PZportal: Personally I have attended Yui Makino’s concert and it is pretty good, what made you to engage Yui to perform at EOY?

Tim: I think she is a very talented artist. Plus, in EOY we have abundant local talent like bands, pianists, singers. Yui is a voice actress, pianist and singer, so she fits into this direction. For EOY09 we are very art centred as suppose to the previous EOY and we don’t want to be like other anime events where it’s more pop-centred and conventional. So we want to offer a different flavour for EOY ‘09. That why we got Yui; plus, I like Yui as well.

PZportal: You mentioned that you are a fan of Yui, so how was it like to work with one of your idols?

Tim: It’s like a dream come true. It’s quite interesting, ‘cause you not only get to see your idol, you actually get to plan a concert for her, sequence her song, assign an engineer and design the lighting for her so it’s a very nice experience.

PZportal: Do you get stressed while working with her?

Tim: You know, all artistes are handled by label representatives and managers. Generally they are very nice people; it’s just that there’s a language barrier sometimes and different people have different requirements. For example, the managers would like their artist’s performance to go well, but we also have the whole event to run, so we have to manage our priorities. But at the end of the day, they are very nice people to talk to and work with.

PZportal: The main problem indicated by the feedback is about the congestion. One of the questions that have been asked around is: why did you choose the drama centre as location for EOY ‘09?

Tim: First of all, as you know, EOY has been held at the Expo for many years, and I felt that if we go back there it there won’t be much of a significant change for the event. As a trained sound engineer, I do stage and lighting, so I always have this liking for stage effects for performances. So I wanted to give people a place to perform where they can interact so that why we hunted for places with an emphasis on the arts, and went in this arts direction. So there is a different effect to the whole event. When you see SOY, you see COSFEST, you see AFA; they are good events, they are very big, and they got a huge stage but we don’t want to do it in a convention style, but an artiste-focused style. I think no one has really tried that before, so I wanted to go in a different direction. So we decided to go towards art, and that led us to pick the drama centre.

Also, we expected about 3000 people, so we took a venue that was slightly bigger by about 15 to 20%, in anticipation of bigger crowds, though the place was narrower so there was some contraction in certain areas. But we certainly didn’t expect such a turnout. It’s certainly a problem, and it means we’ll be looking for a much bigger space for this year.

PZportal: So I understand that it’s less about the cosplay and more about the arts?

Tim:Not exactly. You see, we are trying to put across the angle that cosplay is like an art. It may not be like conventional art, but more like pop art. So the cosplay, costume making, singing performances and competitions, it’s all pop art.

PZportal: There are people saying that in last year’s EOY, they think that it’s centred on Yui Makino instead of cosplay itself, contrary to previous EOY’s.

Tim: Actually, we got the venue way before we got Makino Yui in. So in the original plan we did not have an artiste to plan around. We started asking about her in June; the venue was booked as early as February. Also, it’s the first time that EOY has specially invited an artiste, so naturally we’d want to give her a bit more recognition and exposure. Artistes cannot be left to sing to empty crowds, so we have to push for it a bit. Also it’s not the only thing we have; we have the cosplay segment, the performance segment, the artist segment…so we try to balance it out.

PZportal: Two years ago, AFA were the first to bring artistes in. Is your decision to do the same for EOY a response to that?

Tim: Actually, we try not to be like AFA, as they are very pop culture and anime centred, while EOY is more focused on the arts and cosplay. We think that distinction is important. Also, because they are so big, there is no point in us going in the same direction, since they’ll probably just cannibalise us. We’d rather focus on a different market. That’s the reason we didn’t specifically look for a pop-oriented artist but an arts-oriented one. So people may feel that we’re probably like AFA but I can say for sure that it’s not. We have no intention to compete against AFA.

We do, however, have good relations with the AFA people. We help them with their events and they help us with ours, so there’s a mutual understanding. It makes no sense for us to go in AFA’s direction. They’re well-funded, they have a lot of big sponsors, and honestly, they’re a commercial organisation while we’re run by fans. We want to maintain that, ‘cause otherwise the purpose of EOY would be defeated.

PZportal: I read from some forum posts that you haven’t confirmed whether you want to have EOY ’10. Have you come to a decision?

Tim: Officially, we haven’t announced anything, but the current consensus is that we’re going to do it. In fact, we’re already scouting for venues and we’re in early planning stages.

PZportal: We’re still in the start of the year so it might be early to ask this, but can you give us some hints about what to expect from this year’s EOY?

Tim: We haven’t had anything concrete yet, but the space will definitely be bigger. We will probably have a lot more performances as well. We realised that we could actually have a lot more performances with the schedule we had last year. As for the artistes, we haven’t confirmed who we’re bringing in.

The comic named “The True Story Of kenfoo: The Childhood Years ” came in 11 parts, starting from a carefree children point of view style to end in an epic Romeo and Juliet style ending that almost made me drip a few tears…

In the story it’s a quest of kenfoo looking for love and understanding. And his locksmith parents finding him a disgrace and not being able to accept his wonderful abilities as an artist, leading/pushing to him to his ultimate mistake or can I call it his bravest endeavour.

It was a good read, and if it turns out to be a true story, then Kenfoo’s life, at least the childhood, is f-up… literally… I’m glad he managed to find some identification in his teenage years and gain some confidents.

You can read this comics strip on his website, www.kenfoo.com, which also have a few of his works featured, that 80’s boy have so much potential also.

Before you read this please note that the comic strip is rated M18+ by the artist himself, if you choose to read it, don’t be offended.

The first episode: below with a note from Kenfoo.

Over the years, many people have asked me how I grew up to become the dysfunctional person that I am. I always tell them they’re being ridiculous if not mad. Because, you see, I’m perfectly normal. It’s everyone else that’s crazy. Here, let me tell you a little story about myself to illustrate my point. This, is another true story of me.

China have now reached a new era in making animation aka dong hua! With the release of Astro Plan on their television and youtube(thanks to many others), they are on the verge of flexing their all powerful soft power!

Yah sure, in another 5 to 6 years, they will be… with a blatant copy of Macross’s design… and even the Shen Mu, the flagship in the series… looking like the white horse or more recently the ReHome(Cornelius-class, in Gundam Seed Astray)

Perhaps the reason so many are actually copying Macross is because of the mess that the copyrights owners are in, thanks to an agreement to allow 1 American company to handle the rights outside of Japan… Instead of doing it good, they turn it into robotech and stick by it… blocking all attempts by others to export the original Macross anywhere.

Anyway, the new chinese dong hua, Astro plan, is almost the same as the other productions, nothing fanciful and endearing… In fact, why not you watch it yourself, in the link at the end of the post.

It’s like watching an anime from the 60s, heck it’s worse, compared to the classics like Yamato and etc. Well at least they did the CG part correctly most of the time…

Looks like the PLA should have been the people to lead to the Dong Hua development in China, they got a better production house to make their Red Rightous Army PR video.

In the mean time… enjoy the show…

P.S I can’t help but giggle and laugh… … when watching this show… It sure is entertaining… Like watching Zhou Xing Xing acting as Amuro… … All the anger just seem so funny…

He found several pieces of them during his annual spring cleaning session, stashed in his vast mountains of ancient hardware. Note that even though these CPU are slow compared to modern standards, the CPUs which I am about to show you were speed demons in its’ heyday.

If you were to look closely, 2 of them were from an era not long ago…

If you know Bartender, then maybe you could have known about La Sommelière. Another Alcohol related Manga, but this time its on Wine.

The story of La Sommelière talks about Kana Itsuki, whose being forced to take a change from her current life by working in a restaurant in Tokyo as an an apprentice Sommelière (Female counterpart of a Sommelier). The story is not as simple as Bartender as it involves Kana trying to find out more about her past, from all those around her and also who her benefactor John Smith is. While at the same time offers slice of life experience through Kana’s explanation of the different wine featured in each individual chapter.

Whats there to note is that the difference of this manga and that of Kami no Shizuku, where its a competition between 2 wine critic to unveil the “Twelve Apostles” and the “Les Gouttes de Dieu”. This manga focuses on the story behind each bottle, the meaning each bottle carries which is close to the style depicted in Bartender. Each chapter contains also a review of the bottle featured in the chapter, plus the extras of the manga includes the different articles related to Wines. Whether is it about the specific contents of a Wine, the turmoils surrounding the different kind of grapes and their growing methods, the hike of prices due to the importers. It sure contains an interesting read to those even who does not drink Wine.

For those who love Slice of life manga’s, this is a sure catch. Its theme by chapter style is easy to catch and also it might open you to a new horizon you never reach before (like taking a longer walk along the Aisle of Wines in Supermarkets). As for Bartender fans, it might be the reason to the slow release =X

La Sommelière is currently available in Chinese copies, published by Tong Li (Taiwan Publisher).

So far 4 books have being release. Release interval is not confirmed and takes quite afew month.

Yes it’s Nana Mizuki’s birthday, and she’s 17th.

(Note: It’s real! Don’t say otherwise… Please…)

If you don’t know who is Nana Mizuki… too bad then…

I can only say that she is a Singer, Voice Actor, Visionary, Inventor, Creator, Soother of souls, not my Wife, not my Girlfriend, partially Fate and 100% WIN.

Okay, now in other interesting findings,

> Motorola launched their dext series of Android phone in Singapore yesterday, exclusive to singtel.

The susidized price is expect to be ranging from $0 to $348 depending on the type of plan or plans you are planing toget. The Dext is also known as Cliq in the US, and it will be avaible from saturday onwards…

[Source: Dee Kay Dot As Gee | Hardware Zone | Asia One]

Slightly related is my interest in motorola phone… Since I find that they have the best built, in terms of hardware… Unforunately… They just can’t make it in terms of software before this… Although E680 is a good try… and I loved it! So many ways to hack around with the UI. XD…

And this phone is already tempting me with a slide down PHYSISCAL keyboard… however I’m still waiting for either the droid, also know as Milestone. So many names… no wonder they(Motorola) can plan to release 10 – 20 phones into the market this year…

But will android reboot motorola from the near collapes in their phone business just a few years ago? Get me to but their phone? Or loss another potential customer(me) to apple because of the rumoured iPhone 4?

Only time will tell…

>Final Fantasy I, II is going to be appearing soon in Apple’s App store for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Price point and date of release is unknow… SE just made it known today… haha

[Source: Kotaku.com]

I must say… FF I and II… Have you play them before? I sure have not… but given that they are selling the PSP version of it at $20+ a pop… it’s not going to be cheap…

Anime related…

> Aura Battler: Wing of Rean is of average quality…

After watching 5 out of 6 episode of the sequal to a classic anime… Looks like Yoshiyuki Tomino got cut again… The format seems like it’s supposed to be a full series with atleast 25 episodes, but it only got 6…

How did I tell?

Easy, from the way everything is happening at breakneck pace… Leaving me with a bucket full of muddle water… guessing how a bunch of complete noobs can underrstand more then the “experts”.

Nonetheless, it’s still quite epic. And yes, that is a F35(Note: Not F22), you see at the corner…

> Perfect Blue is crazy

It’s truly is an work of art, leaving me completely hooked… Wondering if Mima really is the killer or… Either way, it’s really a good show, and I’m so lucky that I can still find it considering it’s a 1998 production.

> K-On! Episode 14 is just Extras

Not much of a story content here, It’s really just some character development and the group joining a live show for the first time. It’s also teaches a very important lesson, Never judge a book by it’s cover. Watch it if you have not and you will know what I mean.

> Sora No Woto, Episode 4 is underwhelming…

The soft approach by A1 production this week serves to be quite a bucket of cold water after 2 weeks of high energy synergy acting… As a NSF now, this is just not right… Will a my or a female CSM be that good to me if I fall ill(aka Attend C)? What happened to the soldier setting?

Then again… this should be a slice of life anime right?

And now that tank is an over glorified HIFI system… wow… I really need some action in that show… …

> Nodame finale Episode 1 is good!

It’s the first step towards the finale, what can I say? Gyabo!

Sorry to disappoint you much but, I’m not that good of a blogger… But I sure have written quite of them in Poly… BTW, I’m from Singapore Polytechnic and is quite a fan/member of SP LifeArts, my club once and forever.

I hope to be able to bring you useful information and local anime related news, while at the same time some interest bits from Japan. It can be fun!

So feel free to send me information of your anime or art related events, and I’ll try my best to promote it either here or at my club’s site.

But let me please do a disclaimer… My engalish is not that good, and especially when it come to graamer, the speeling is atrocious, and it’s not very interesting… Given that not many read my post at my club’s site…TT-TT

While you might see a lot figurine’s photo in this post, what I love are DVDs. Also I’m an amateur Photographer, with a Canon 500D and 2 lens…

(Note: Let me confess, I’m watching the OVA for K-On! while writing the this entry, I’m so relaxed… Yah?)

Are you in base somewhere, using an iPod for your entertainment? However, what bothers you is that you cannot upload the animes you want into it… Because most anime is in .MKV format… and there are not many programs to convert such a format… less so for it to be in .MP4

You know what?

Use this…

It’s MediaCoder iPod/iPhone. I personally use this myself. There is of cos a more advance version, that is optimised for 64-bit computing, for convertion to other formats and devices.

There is even a version for the Playstation 3. So do try it out… there’s no version for Android phones, but I’m very sure iPhone’s format works fine(Note: The beauty of an open system!)…
