When I first arrived and met Joanne’s two small and cute nephews who were to be page boys, I thought she might be upstaged. But I needn’t have worried! The bride was her glamourous self, and the weather was perfect for an outdoor reception. Joanne was suitably embarrassed by her fathers revelations of her youth, although the speeches were too much for one young guest who decided to sleep instead.

The day was rounded off by a ceilidh and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

If you’ve read my previous blog post you’ll know why it’s taken so long to post this, and I apologise! I’m editing these photos on my laptop, which I hate doing. So more apologies if they don’t look quite right - I’ll update them when I have access to my main super powered machine with enormous monitor.

They had everything required for a perfect wedding - an amazing dress, Edinburgh’s most prestigious venue, even a best man who embarrassed the groom.

...I’ve never come across “Big Vern ‘n’ the Shootahs” before, despite the fact they’ve been around for 20 years. ... Think of The Blues Brothers, and you’re half way there. Not only did everyone dance enthusiastically, but the band seemed to be having a good time too! They even got Kirsten and some of her friends up on stage........

Of course, being Scotland, there was a bit of a ceilidh too, with music provided by the Men in Kiltz Ceilidh band.

Don’t get too excited - it’s a DVD to teach English to Italian school kids, and I’m taking the photos that will go in the accompanying text book!

...I have a copy of the book, complete with holes on pages where my photos will go and instructions for what each photo should show. But I’ve known the video cameraman, production manager and director for many years, and met most of the rest of the crew three years ago when we worked together on another version of the film and book, so it’s great fun and generally relaxed.

...And although I’ve been back to visit, it’s still a shock to the system to have to commute on the tube early every morning! Combined with very long hours and having to sort out the photos every evening, it’s like doing a wedding every day of the week. I’ve even perfected the art of falling asleep on the tube on the way into town and to the location of the day (which implies that I have a seat in the morning rush hour - because I’ve got on the tube so early.)

Saturday’s seem to be the time for ‘recovery’ (aka sleeping a lot) but I’ve managed to see some friends on Sundays. Here are a couple of portraits of my friends Nick and Amanda’s two youngest children:

...And for maximum embarrassment value, here’s a sneaked shot of their oldest daughter with her boyfriend:

Although the weather was not good (it was so windy I could barely get my car door open) the location was still stunning. Lesley’s bridal car (a vintage Rolls Royce) broke down on the A9. Rescue came in the form of another motorist, who saw her and her father on the verge and realised something was up, and offered a lift. Add five minutes to her father’s speech!

By the time we’d come out of the church the sun was shining, and everything continued according to plan.

That’s the thing about the weather in Scotland: I’ve never photographed a wedding when it poured with rain the whole day. There’s always sunshine at some point!

...We have been on a rollercoaster of emotions and it has all come flooding back and we cannot thank you enough for capturing our special day.

When we started planning our wedding we knew that we had to have a special location in Scotland, we found that in Duns Castle. The dress of course had to be perfect and Ginnette found just what she wanted and it was stunning. Third on our list was a photographer who would capture the day for us just as we wanted. We are so happy that you were the right choice, we pretty much knew from your web site but then speaking to you by telephone and then meeting you convinced us. You did not let us down Simon and we are so grateful, you are very talented and the fact you are so nice and easy to get along with, well, a great combination.

We read on your web site that to cut costs on a photographer was not a good idea, we have to say that you have provided us and our family and guests with fantastic photographs and it was worth every penny.

...I am sure we will be in touch for advice on putting together an album, where to start with these photographs is the real difficulty.

...The 'surprise’ which I include for all brides and grooms this year is going down well, and I'll eventually reveal what it is!

It was my first visit to the Carnoustie Golf Hotel, sitting right on the edge of the famous golf course.

It was a really fun and relaxed wedding (although I don’t think Alan would have agreed 30 minutes before the ceremony!) Lots of laughter and love. Oh, and a rather cynical hawk, that refused to co-operate during the display he was meant to be part of! The rain held off, the morning fog cleared, and the daffodils remained in bloom - perfect!

When you add a stunning bride and groom into the location - it just makes my job easier! Louise and David had a great day at the college for their wedding. David is vice President of the college and Louise sits on the committees, so it was a fitting venue for them and their guests.

There were 24 children (I was told - they were permanently on the move, so it was difficult to count!) four of whom made delightful bridesmaids. And in the evening everyone joined in the ceilidh, dancing along to music from the Belle Star Band.

They had an official photographer, who I noticed, apart from his unusual dress sense, was shooting film.

Well, Chris and Delphine haven’t even got their official photos yet! Just two weeks after their wedding I’d sent them a digital album, a DVD full of images of the weekend, some hand printed B&W prints, and a web gallery so that everyone could see some of those photos.....

...We finally took our contact sheets back to the 'traditional' chap with our selection of pictures they would print up for the album they'll make up, and his assistant was annoyed that we wanted 140 instead of 150 prints and to give the other 10 prints to our family as presents. Apparently this is Not Done as they rely on family buying, on average, 200 prints per wedding to make up their money. As they'd already had EUR 1500 of our money since August I was pretty upset at such bare-faced greed, but was restrained enough to say 'Oh really?' As a special, this time only offer she let us do this. ... I won't be recommending him again, good though his pictures are. I have to say, your method is infinitely preferable to this old-fashioned we-hold-the-negs, you may not scan our pix attitude (it took us six months to physically carry the contact sheet album round our families in France and the UK, and we still missed some people out - we were contractually forbidden to put them online and they wrote on them in marker pen to make this impossible anyway).

Alison and Simon's wedding

I was in Edinburgh for my first wedding of the year. And the good news is: it didn’t rain! I’m hoping this is a good omen for the rest of the year.

Alison and Simon got married in the chapel at George Heriots School and then travelled to Turmeau Hall at Napier University for their reception.

Four very cute flower girls almost stole the show throughout the day, from dancing in the aisle in the chapel, to joining in the cake cutting ceremony! It’s from Gemma and George’s wedding in Orkney earlier this year, and is of George’s brother, father and mother. I only entered 4 photos, so it’s quite a result!

JUDGES COMMENTS: A perfect moment. Much implied, but you dont have to show more than the reactions. This image simply grabs your attention, just as the woman in the bathrobe did to the two men in kilts. It holds your wonder and begs you to speculate as to the nature of the humorous exposure. Is she too wearing a kilt?

The weather was bitterly cold - even Pipe Major Iain Grant (a real Scot) was complaining about the damage being done to his nether regions! Luckily, blazing fires inside the castle warmed us all up as harpist Ian Hood became the centre of attention for the couple’s two young children.

Yes, I know it snowed in London in October, but here in Scotland we try and have normal weather patterns!

Blair and Jody, who had flown in from the USA with family members, had picked Castle Urquart, on the banks of Loch Ness, as their wedding venue. Luckily the howling gale and horizontal sleet that I had observed at 11am had abated by 3pm, even if it wasn’t any warmer. At least the ceremony was in the one room in the castle with a roof!

An owl delivered the rings (another first for me) and then the sun peeked out just before sunset allowing me to take some photographs with the castle in the background - all to the accompaniment of Japanese tourists taking pictures too! I think they took more than me!

Thanks to Yvonne at Scottish Wedding Consultants, for organising another wonderful day!

But I should explain the judging process: Initially the brides I have photographed in the 12 months up to the 20th September can vote for me and make nice comments on an online form. These are all looked at and the top 7 photographers become nominees. That’s the most important bit, as it’s entirely based on bride’s (and groom’s) opinions of me, my photography and how it all worked together on their wedding day. So a huge thanks to everyone who voted for me and thank you for the lovely comments you must have made (I don’t get to see any of them.)

The next step involves my filling in a ‘business enquiry’ form, where I explain aspects of Q Photography’s business: how I create, maintain and improve service levels, etc. ... And that’s why I’m not too bothered about not winning (again) and if you believe that.....

Anyway, Steve (Design Scotland Video) and his wife Yvonne (Scottish Wedding Consultants) and I travelled to Glasgow for the black tie event at the Hilton. All three of us were nominees - and Steve won (as you can see in the photo below left.) ... Although I’m glad that’s Yvonne’s hand on my chest, and not the other way round!

For those of you who don't know where that is, you first drive to Inverness, and then you head north and west for an hour. When you arrive in the back of beyond, you drive west down a single track road for another ten miles! The scenery is, of course, superb. There was a stiff breeze blowing on the day with a few showers, but that just meant we had fantastic shafts of sunlight on the surrounding hills, and several rainbows. There were great speeches, enthusiastic (and in some cases, bizarre) ceilidh dancing, and a general good time had by all. Oh, and the bride and groom left the next morning in a helicopter, arriving home in just 30 minutes rather than the normal four hours driving!

My old university friend Chris was getting married and I was a guest rather than the official photographer. It was a great reunion of old friends, with lots of catching up to do. So, four days of fantastic weather, good friends, copious quantities of wine and no responsibilities! What could be more perfect? My jaw did hit the floor when the official photographer turned up - looking as though he'd just arrived from a war zone! The complete opposite of my own "unobtrusive" style.

It was interesting to see a wedding from a different angle - not just as a guest, but French as well, with the marriage being conducted by the local mayor (wearing his official sash) and afterwards a blessing in a church. Chris and Delphine's 3 month old baby Scarlett behaved perfectly throughout (possibly because she was being fought over by all the female guests!)

It's the most amazing place. I spent the last weekend on Stronsay for Gemma and George's wedding.

It was a unique experience. I think that with the exception of the hairdresser, the bridal car and myself, everything was done locally. The reception was in the local community centre, the food was cooked, and served, by islanders, and the ceilidh band in the evening was of course local. In fact, the entire island was asked to the evening party and the sense of community, of everyone joining in to celebrate the couple's happiness was palpable.

The next day there was another party on Gemma's parents' farm, a 'recovery' party, with a barbecue and trampolines, and more music and drinks.

Here's a quick glimpse at some photos, and there's plenty more to see here.

And the sea and sand really were that colour!

I headed to the south of Spain, to see my artist friend Kath.

Now, I've never thought of Photography as art, and one of Kath's pictures surely proves it!

...Photographers win by catching that 'hidden' moment - something that can happen at weddings, but not with landscapes.

Anyway, here are mine and Kath's versions of the same scene.

...The cow on the beach is at Bolonia, as is the beach cafe and roman ruins. It's a tiny hamlet between Cadiz and Tarifa, full of antiquities and weird sights. That's Morocco in the background behind the cow - my next stop.

...Much, much, smaller than Marrakech, you can probably 'do' the entire old town in a day. The atmosphere is really laid back, the temperature always cooled by the sea winds, and if I was in charge, I'd market it as a honeymoon destination!

Frances and Michel's wedding

Spring had finally sprung on May 1st at Duns Castle. Frances and Michel, from Holland, got married on a day of April showers and brillant sunshine. The leaves were out on the trees and the daffodils were in full bloom. I was meant to be there to look at new printing papers and to find out if there were any new albums that met my criteria. ... Put me in a camera shop, or trade fair, and I seem to go weak-kneed. I don't seem to be able to resist the allure of all that padding, zips and velcro!

...I only wasted two hours before my head over-ruled my heart ("there's no such thing as a perfect camera bag / you've got enough already / it's a waste of money") and I moved on - to trying to justify buying body armour when I'm a wedding photographer!

..., I decided to do a round Britain tour visiting friends who seem to think that Scotland is too far away (and cold) to visit. I made it all the way to the south coast near Chichester, saw loads of people in London, and then made my way back north via Suffolk and Huntingdon.

In one of those bizzare moments, I attended a friends 50th birthday party and the first person I saw was Mike, the best man from Paulo and Karen's wedding, 10 days before.

...Oh, and a photo of Oliver's snake, having it's weekly meal (don't look if you don't like Attenborough's programmes!)

Geri and David brought their family and friends up from Norfolk in a fleet of cars and a minibus, battling their way through the north Yorkshire snow storms. Of course, having arrived, the snow vanished!

A great time was had by all, with lots of tears and emotion, along with all the happiness and celebration. Ceri and Aileen got married on George Street and were piped round to the Royal College on Queen Street The threatened rain held off, and I managed to get some quick photos of them in Queen Street Gardens before the cold set in. I even managed to assemble all the guests onto the main staircase for a group photo before dinner! Ceri's young nephew carried the haggis as it was piped in, before being superbly addressed by Aileen's brother. Here's a few photos:

It was an intimate wedding, with just 20 guests, including four children. The bride was nearly out-shone by her beautiful daughter, four year Harriet, who was only let down by her shyness!

The men played golf in the morning, on Guthrie's own 9 hole course (although from what I saw, 'golf' is a loose description....)

It was raining and getting dark by the time the ceremony was over, but thanks to my new nikons, that wasn't a problem. Here are a few pictures:

I stayed in my friend Philip's place in Marrakech, the Riad Porte Royale for a few days, then off to Fez, an 8 hour train ride away.

Fez is a smaller, quieter version of Marrakech. There are no annoying scooters, or motorised transport of any kind, allowed inside the city walls. Everything is transported by human or mule power. Even the mules wear rubber shoes (although that's for grip on the the cobbled hills rather than for quietness.) As the French say, it's 'plus gentil.' I stayed with 'slightly mad and English' Louis at his Dar Mernissi - you can read his entertaining blog about life in Fez here (of course, all the bits about my appetite for gin are totally made up!)

Here's some photos:

They certainly knew how to make life logistically difficult for themselves! The preparations and reception was on the Isle of Mull, but the wedding ceremony itself was a 30 minute ferry ride away in the church at Kilchoan, on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Luckily the rain held off, if not the wind. But the were some lovely photographs of everybody getting on and off, and Louise wasn't too bothered about getting her dress dirty on the not-too-clean ferry. I hope all the pictures tell the rest of the story.
